to lead the Organisation. Local Government NSW Management Solutions (LGMS) is coordinating the extensive merit-based recruitment process, which has included advertising nationwide. Applications for Council’s top job close on 30 April and following
short-listing, firstround interviews will be conducted by the selection panel in the week commencing 14 May. The panel appointed by Council for the task includes Mayor David West, Deputy Mayor Katheryn Smith and Crs Troy Fowler, Karen Hutchinson and Claire Pontin. Following further short-listing, the final candidates will front the full Council on 28
May. Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead said LGMS has extensive experience in the selection and recruitment of senior Executive staff. “There are a lot of challenges for the new GM in aligning and integrating the three former Councils, while also continuing to deliver the day-to-day services the community expect,” Mr Bromhead said.
“I look forward to the process of finding the best person to lead this dynamic Organisation.” The new General Manager will replace Glenn Handford who announced his resignation in December last year. Steve Embry will remain in the Acting General Manager position until the recruitment process is finalised.

Children remember our ANZACs As we came together to mark another ANZAC Day, Our youngsters were taught an invaluable lesson at Tea Gardens Library last week.
By Margie TIERNEY
AS we came together to mark another ANZAC Day, Our youngsters were taught an invaluable lesson at Tea Gardens Library last week. With the approval of the RSL, Librarians Carol Johnson and Chris Shelly took a large group of
children on a trip down memory lane, to a time when Australia was at war more than a century ago. The school holiday activity was all about creating a ‘care package’ as if it was the year 1915 and the youngsters were sending it to a brother, father or family member serving on the
front line. “The children wrote a letter, as well as making a red poppy and adding things that our Service men and women would have needed in the trenches,” Carol Johnson. Some of those things included, toothpaste, soap, a bar of chocolate and of course Anzac biscuits. The care packages were all wrapped as if to be sent, and then the best part was the children got to open them again. “It was good to be able to experience what life was like in World War One,” Sophie said.
But all agreed they wouldn’t want to have lived a century ago, “It would have been a tough life,” Maya said. The school holiday activity was just one of the many events held on a regular basis at the Tea Gardens Library. Coming up on Friday 4 May from 2pm to 3.pm is a book talk and signing with Author Kim Hodges. Kim’s ‘Girl Over The Edge’ is a raw and confronting account of mental illness and recovery. Bookings are advised and can be made at midcoastlibraries. com.au

Kerbside Cleanup Gets the Go-Ahead AFTER much debate, kerbside cleanups will continue in the Myall Coast region this year. MIDCOAST Council met last week and decided to expand the free scrap metal and bulk waste pick up service for the Manning and Great Lakes area to the entire MidCoast Council area including Gloucester. As in previous years, residents are required to sort their waste items prior to placing out for collection, with scrap metal and whitegoods in one pile, and general waste in another. Dates for collections are still to be announced. MidCoast has also revived its series of community meetings across the region. The meetings will cover changes to customer service and its call centre. Also on the agenda, the timeline for
appointing a new General Manager, the potential office consolidation and relocation and improvements to the road network. The one and a half to two hour meetings will also give

If you have been unfairly dismissed and the Fair Work Commission (‘FWC’) considers that reinstatement would be inappropriate, the FWC may make an order for compensation. Under the Fair Work Act, there is a legislative cap on the amount of compensation that can be ordered. Where compensation is payable, it is capped at the lesser of 6 months’ pay immediately before dismissal or the equivalent of exactly half the current high income threshold. As of 1 July 2017, the unfair dismissal high income threshold was $142,000.00 meaning the maximum compensation that can be awarded is $71,000.00. The key case for determining the amount of compensation to be ordered for unfair dismissal is Sprigg v Pauls Licenced Festival Supermarkets (1988) IR 21. This

OUI OUI to U3A By Margie TIERNEY ONE of the most popular groups in the Myall is the University of the 3rd Age, more commonly known as the U3A. But did you know that the world wide Organisation had its humble beginnings in France and to that end the Myall U3A has added French language lessons to its list of activities. ”At Myall U3A, most members have had a taste of the French language at school and as France is a very popular tourist destination for Australians, study of the language is a practical advantage for holidays, therefore, it is not surprising that enrolments for French in 2018 have been overwhelming.” teacher George Nadal said. George told News of The Area, “At Myall U3A, we have embraced ‘a mixed ability group. “Group members have brought with them, not only school learning experience, but also a range of learning
experiences from holidays to French speaking countries.” “During the first term, members have had the opportunity to appreciate the four language skills, speaking, listening, reading and writing.” “In term two, we will spend a considerable amount of time either listening or speaking to provide a sound foundation for confidence,” George said. “If my memory serves me well, we all learn our first language by listening to our parents and adults and then imitating them. With its headquarters in beautiful Hawks Nest, Myall U3A runs two French courses, a beginner’s course and an intermediate/ advanced course once a week on Thursdays. To end the first term, members of the French classes were treated to a very successful ‘Matinée des Bavards’, a chit chat morning tea at the Tea Gardens Pub. The order of the day, which was not on the menu, was to speak only French.

Every time I go to the mall I get accosted by people trying to sell me things in the general thoroughfare. I find this a massive, unwanted intrusion. Mr KL, Raymond Terrace Dear Mr KL, I can understand, Mr KL, but you have to treat this as a challenge. It is a game of tactical warfare, and the only way you can come out on top is by using some strategic moves. Do you have a young toddler who likes to scream in public? If not, maybe you can borrow one when you go to the mall. Salespeople are less likely to stop you if you are looking flustered. You also need to work on walking like an Olympian. The heel, toe strut is an efficient way to avoid people. Or maybe like an Egyptian. That’ll really confuse them. Walk as close to the surrounding shops as possible. Go into them if you have to, and hide out amongst the clothing racks until they’ve accosted someone else. Avoiding eye contact is extremely important. Pretend to be on the phone and make frantic, distressed gestures until you are out of reach. From experience, although tenacious, the stall-holders will not chase you. Once you are out of range, they will redirect their focus. It is important to avoid answering what may seem like innocent questions: “How is your day? Are you keen for a healthy change? How do you feel about world poverty? Do you wish you could have younger-looking skin?” Once you answer, you’re done for. You will then need to respond to a range of questions, fill out your credit card details and sign up to goodness-knows-what, all because you dared to use a public thoroughfare on your way to buy six slices of devon and a loaf of bread from Woolies. Having said all of that, there may be a stall that you are genuinely interested in. You can scan the merchandise or offer from a distance and then decide. Remember, you are in control. Carpe diem, Jasminda

MYALL COAST
True Masters By Margie TIERNEY
IN the words of President Chris Lock, the Myall Masters Swimming Club has had an extraordinary 12 months. At its recent Presentation Night, members of the Myall Masters rightly celebrated a great year, in and out of the water. President Chris Lock said, “The Club was instrumental in having MidCoast Council reverse its decision to not replace the solar heating in the pool resulting from the outset the average daily water temperature being 27 degrees.” “The Club hosted the inaugural Open Water swim in October,” Chris said.

Call for new President By Margie TIERNEY THE Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism is looking to swell it’s ranks. The Chamber is also looking for a new President following Jessica Harris’ decision to step down after 18 months in the lead role. During her tenure,
Jessica introduced online invoicing, maintained the Chamber’s email communications, Facebook page, ensured last year’s Myall River Festival occurred and attended many meetings on behalf of the Chamber. “Thanks to Treasurer Julie Saville, ordinary members Les Smith,
Club Member of the Year went to Brad Jensen. Coaches Certificates of Encouragement were presented to Jenny Brailey, Sharon Taylor and Max Harder. Chris Lock also highlighted other notable successes of the Club. “Two outstanding achievements were our Women’s 4 x 50m Freestyle relay team of Linda Stubbs, Kate -Louise Maddison, Liz McKay and Sharon Taylor.” “It is remarkable these ladies who competed at our swim meet in February are currently ranked Number One in the State and second in Australia.” “In the 2017 State Championships at Sydney Olympic pool, Homebush, the team of Chris Mobbs (late), Peter Kellaway, Leon Bobako and Brad Jensen won the 2017 NSW men’s 4x 25m men’s relay title in the 280 -319 years, an average age 70 years.” “The team ended the year ranked Number One in Australia, ahead of all other Masters Swimming Clubs.” Chris added, ‘’It was an heroic effort by our boys and a special certificate commemorating this event was presented to three of the successful members of the team, a first team award ever presented by the Myall Masters Swimming Club.” Emily and Ben Hanson and MidCoast Chamber Representative Rick Wraight and past President Graham Halley for their support,” Jessica said. Jessica, who owns Lazy Paddles, said she will remain a member of the Chamber and committed to helping with this year’s River Festival. If you would like to join the Chamber, or put your hand up for any of the committee roles, just head to the Tea Gardens Hotel on Tuesday 1 May at 6pm.

Trivia Night Fun
By Margie TIERNEY
IT was a case of ‘Roll up and Roll out’ all your knowledge at Rotary’s 12th Annual Trivia Challenge last week. “The event was staged at the St Stephen’s Parish Hall in Tea Gardens and contested by 9 tables of 8 very enthusiastic trivia experts,” Ian Mackenzie Smith told News Of The Area. “The trivia night is
held to express Rotary’s appreciation for the support given to the Club during the previous year by the members of our Community” “The night is not considered a major fundraising night but is most always a sell-out,” Ian said. A host of generous prizes were up for grabs with a team from the Palm Lake Resort taking out first place. Their team name of ‘The Last Resort’ was not
indicative of their general knowledge skills and they won by a good margin. “Rotary President Graeme Dunn and the Club members would like to thank the Community for their continued support in their fundraising efforts on behalf of the Charitable Organisations of our towns and for rolling up each year to what has become an established social event.”

Variety of songs to Entertain By Rachael VAUGHAN USE the last weekend of the school holidays to try somewhere new. If you haven’t been to picturesque Bulahdelah, give it a go this weekend. Bulahdelah Bowling Club is a great supporters of live music on the local scene, and
this weekend is no different. ‘Bernie’ will take the stage on Friday 27 April from 7:30pm, and his show is guaranteed to make it worth your while. Bernie has been playing guitar from the early age of nine years old, when he started off with lessons in Sydney for a period of six years.
Bernie then moved to the Central West and had seven years of Guitar lessons with “Leo Dekroo”. Leo and his brother Doug (known as The Dekroo Brothers) being famous for a hit single in the 1960s titled ‘And Her Name Is Scarlet’. While having lessons with Leo, Bernie started playing with other guitarists and
playing in various bands and duos. In 1985, he started up singing lessons for four years and studied grade three and four AMEB Certificate formal exams in vocal. Bernie moved to Newcastle in 2002 and spent
six months programming backing tracks in his home studio, and then ventured out into the Pubs and Clubs performing. Professionalism is a key ingredient to Bernie’s solo shows and he is proud of his ability to engage the crowd, and provides exceptional sound for his performance. Bernie listens to the crowd, and takes their

Sunday Bowls has been taken over by the Men’s Bowling Club and will continue. It re-commenced today with a bang! Patron of the Men’s Bowling Club, Gary Melrose, hosted a team of players from the “Duke of Wellington” Social Club. Despite a few annoying showers it was a beautiful day for a visit from The Duke with a field of 28 players participating. A draw of the cards found winners and the losers. A great time enjoyed by all and a promise from The Duke that they will return again next year. A generous thank you to all who helped make the day enjoyable. The Club welcomed new bowlers, Katherine and Graham Pollack.

WE ARE SELLING THIS ADVERTISING SPACE Call 02 4983 2134 or email ads@mcnota .com.au ALTHOUGH Bulahdelah Fishing Club members were met with a chilly welcome at their April outing last weekend, it didn’t deter the keen anglers from baiting their hooks and casting their lines. With a competition area spanning the local rivers, lakes and beaches, Club President Darren Carrall said despite the cold and blustery conditions, 152 decent sized fish were caught. “Catches were down slightly on previous outings, it was quiet and cold, and the wind was a bit of a problem,” he said. As the rain fell on the final day of competition, anglers retreated to Bulahdelah Bowling Club where salmon, jewfish, flounder, bream, flathead and estuary perch were amongst the list of species presented for the allimportant weigh-in.

In the junior competition, Dean Hancock finished on top with his catch of 12 fish, with Max Freihaut and Olivia Smith taking the minor placings. Vanessa Shultz scored the win in the women’s section, ahead of runners-up Terese Lilley and Emily Kirkpatrick. In the men’s category, Tom Evans once again proved hard to beat, claiming the top spot with his catch of 25 fish totalling 13.62 kilograms. Brett Shultz was awarded second place and Darren Carrall, who also claimed the Mystery Fish title with a 2.825-kilogram jewfish, finished third. Recorder Vanessa Shultz said club members have performed consistently throughout the year. “It was interesting to note that for our outings this year, the same people have placed first, second and third in each of the competitions,” she said.
The next club outing will be held from 4-6 May at Dee’s Corner followed by the Mid-North Coast q Mystery Fish Winner: Darren Carrall with his 2.825-kilogram jewfish.
