THE crowd was hot, happy and hungry as they streamed into Moira Parade Park in Hawks Nest last Saturday for the annual Australia Day Breakfast. The Lions Club cooked up hundreds of bacon and egg and sausage sandwiches; the food selling out by around 10.30 in the morning. Lions Club President Sandra Bell said, “Long-time resident Janis Winn received the Senior Award Citizen of the Year for her tireless work collating the history of this area.” Jan, whose family has been in the area for five generations, has written four books, the information and photos and invaluable record of the region going back to the 1800’s. “Along with the Certificate and flowers for Jan, the Lions Club has made a donation in Jan’s name to the Lions Disaster Relief Foundation,” Sandra said.

“This Foundation puts money aside for immediate help in times of need.” Janis said “I’m very surprised but thrilled at receiving the recognition.” The Tea Gardens Lions Citizen of the Year for the Junior Award went to Jordan Tumes. Jordan, who sits his HSC this year, is in the Air

Cadets at Williamtown and his dream is to become a pilot. “He has started a Fairy Floss business to help pay for his flying lessons and this shows initiative and a young man who will no doubt go far in life,” Sandra said. The flag raising ceremony was carried out by last year’s Citizen of the Year, Gordon

Grainger under the direction of the RSL’s Barry Whiteman. Doug Allen told News Of The Area, “The Family History Group was present showcasing their Trove Project, which aims to record and digitise copies of locals newspapers to ensure that the history of the area is available for future generations.” Doug said, “Thank go to volunteers from

the Myall Masters Swimming Club for the running of the children’s games.” The children won the day in the annual Tug-of-War battle with the parents. “A special thanks must also go to the MidCoast Council for sponsoring the event and for the numerous tasks that they carried out to prepare and clean up the park,” Doug said.

Free Check Up ATTENTION all men: cometh the hour, cometh the man, it’s time to stop saying ‘I’ll be right mate’ and do something about your health and well being. The ‘Men’s Health Education Rural Van’ (MHERV) is coming to Tea Gardens; a perfect opportunity for men to get a check up from the neck up or the neck down, and it won’t cost a cent. ‘MHERV’ as it’s called is a purpose built caravan that travels the State dropping into to regional and rural areas to test men for signs of ill health. “We all know that men are slow to go to the Doctor to get something attended to that will ‘go away if I put up with it for a while’ attitude,” MHERV’s Operational Manager Barry Knowles said.

“These are the guys who drop dead in the pub, or in the paddock, because nobody saw it coming,” Barry said, “ and MHERV has many times identified a lifethreatening condition, and saved someone from an early death.” The statistics are sobering when it comes to men’s health: around 41,000 Australian men die each year from preventable disease, that’s four men and four grieving families every hour. Registered Nurse Robert Woolley is on board the travelling Medical Centre and will carry out non-invasive tests involving body mass, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar (diabetes).

MHERV is sponsored by Rotary and specifically targets towns where the average male population is aged 60 plus. So ‘Man Up’ men of the Myall and head to the carpark of the Tea

Gardens Library just next to the swimming pool between the hours of 10am and 4pm on Wednesday and Thursday 6 and 7 February: the trip could save your life.

Kayaker found dehydrated THE Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to assist Nelson Bay Water Police in the search for a missing 65 year old female who went kayaking last Sunday morning on the Myall River at Hawks Nest. The kayaker was located by members of the public and was transferred a the Water Police vessel which in turn transferred her to an awaiting ambulance. The women suffered dehydration.

q U3A MEMBER AND LECTURER: Ronnie Nichols. By Margie TIERNEY SOME housekeeping ahead of the University of the Third Age (U3A) kicking off for another year of learning, creativity and comradeship. At the end of their last semester, members of the U3A tackled the ever growing problem of plastics pollution. “The presentation was called “What can a group of ‘Old Bags’ do about plastic pollution?” Ronnie Nichols said. “The two hour presentation began with an artwork created by local resident Sharon Taylor showing how the amount of plastic collected from our own beach can be strikingly represented, photographed and disposed of”, Ronnie said. “Concepts for discussion included the amount of time that has needlessly elapsed since the first ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ catchcry was introduced in the 1980’s.” The late Ian Kiernan’s ‘Clean Up’ campaigns instigated by his marine experiences with plastic rubbish in the oceans of the world, culminated in’ Clean up the World’. “Before his untimely death Ian played an important role in lobbying for container collections in NSW,” she said. Ronnie added, “Take 3 for the Sea is a more recent campaign instigated by Australian Environmentalist Tim Silverwood, but sadly this campaign has gone unnoticed by many.” “It was acknowledged that materials such as marine plastic rope, drinking straws, balloons, lids and rings, plastic drink bottles, polystyrene packaging as well as plastic bags and many more can be seen in various states of degradation in gutters, drains, parks, rivers, creeks, oceans and the roadside.” “This becomes a much bigger problem in Third World countries at the same time as understanding that many depend on recovery of plastic for their income.” To reduce the amount of plastic in Western countries, littering was seen as a problem

It is no surprise that emails, text messages and other communication apps are prevalent in most workplaces. Recent decisions of the Fair Work Commission have found that when it comes to communicating a dismissal with an employee, it is best practice to do so in person rather than by email or any other method of communication. In Knutson v Chesson Pty Ltd [2018] FWC 2080, Commissioner Cambridge commented that the advice of termination of employment is a matter of such significance that basic human dignity requires the dismissal be conveyed personally with arrangements for the presence of a support person and documentary confirmation. He noted that unless there is some genuine apprehension of physical violence or geographical impediment, the message of dismissal should always be conveyed face to face. In Cachia v Scobel Pty Ltd [2018] FWC 2648 Deputy

President Sams commented that while there is no express requirement for dismissals to be communicated in person in the Fair Work Act 2009 (“FWA”), informing an employee of their dismissal by phone, text or email is not an appropriate means of conveying a decision which has such serious ramifications for an employee unless the employer believes that there might be a threat to safety or if the employee has expressly indicated that they did not want a ‘face to face’ meeting to hear the outcome of a disciplinary process. Therefore, while it is not a strict requirement of the FWA that dismissals be communicated in person, employers should be aware that if they communicate dismissals by email, text message or other electronic methods of communication, a dismissal which may otherwise be considered fair and valid, may be subject to criticism and scrutiny.

Cool Opening for Gallery

News Of The Area

GALLERIES in the Gardens has celebrated its first year of operation with the opening of a new exhibition ‘Cool Summer’. “It might have been entitled ‘Cool Summer Exhibition’ but the day couldn’t have been hotter,’’ GIG President Trevor Cook said. “Even given the extreme heat, people still turned up in the early evening to be part of the official opening, some coming from quite far and wide.” Among the hundred people who delighted in the occasion were MidCoast Council Lord Mayor David West, his wife, Maureen and Granddaughter Mae. “Guests were cooled by the breeze off the Myall, which made the garden a top spot for people to gather after viewing the artworks,” Trevor said. The theme of this year’s Cool Summer Art Exhibition was ‘Gardens and Connected Landscapes’. “Artworks ranged from an eye-catching bird’s nest by GIG artist Jacqui Bright, a unique turquoise/white/black totem pole for the garden by artist Wendy Thompson and a trompe l’oeil by Hannah Matilda, called ‘Distant Hills’. A number of artworks sold on the night, thrilling their creators, while attracting the most votes in The People’s Choice Award was ‘Ripples’, by GIG member Glen Henry. Louise Phillips was the lucky winner of the raffle for a gourmet hamper while a $100 gift voucher was won by Tam Dand. The Cool Summer Exhibition runs to the end of January so you’ll need to be quick to catch it, but there’ll still be plenty to please the eye with the doors of Galleries in the Gardens open every day except Tuesday, at its beautiful home on Marine Drive Tea Gardens.

a few houses that in some cases created the problem in the first place. Eventually we will, with global warming, need to withdraw to a defensible position. Our time here is a drop in the ocean or a few grains of sand on the beach compared to the geological movement of Sand in Port Stephens. I assume the council would be able to/& has already sourced old aerial &/or other photos of the area over a short period (100 years?) that would lend some credence to this theory? Meanwhile, maybe council should plant some salt tolerant fast growing tall trees like Norfolk Island pines or vegetation similar to that on the rest of Jimmy’s Beach, the owners of those properties can be given a choice, lose the view or lose the house, seems an easy choice to me. Dennis Ashbridge and Greg and George Brown played too strong for Brenden Revell, Peter Green, Phil Rathbone
