Final Book Sale for Rotary after 15 Years By Margie TIERNEY
THIS year’s Rotary Book Sale, will be bitter, sweet for members of the Myall Coast Club. After 15 very successful years, this will be the last Book Sale organised by the Rotary. “The decision to have this sale as our final is a combination of losing our storage facilities at Pelican Pest plus the demands on our Members of collating, stacking and lifting the books given our rising ages,” Rotary’s Roger Digby told News Of The Area. Locals and tourists alike have flocked to the Book Sale every year, a tradition that will be sadly missed. When it first started, the sale was held over the Easter weekend, then moved to the January holiday period. “There will be plenty of bargains to be found and we look forward to an event which is very popular and helps fund many worthwhile local causes,”

Final Sale for Rotary after 15 Years
Roger said. As always, there will be thousands of books on offer, a veritable gold mine for literary lovers. Put these dates in your diary, this coming Friday, 4 January through to Sunday 6 January, the sale being held in the Hawks Nest Community Hall on the corner of Booner and Tuloa Streets. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has now contracted a Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROUV) to join the search operation. So far three targets of interest have been located and imaged. A spokesperson for the AMSA reported “The ROUV was deployed close to shore for testing just south of Fingal Bay at the known location of a target identified during

The ROUV assessments will continue over the coming weeks as weather conditions permit. • A total of 3,149 samesex weddings were held in Australia between 9 December 2017, when amendments to the Marriage Act 1961 came into effect, and 30 June 2018. • The median age at marriage for male same-sex couples as at 30 June 2018 was 48.5 years of age, compared to 39.0 years of age for female samesex couples. • There were 112,954 marriages registered in Australia in 2017, a 4.7% (5,447) decrease on marriages registered in 2016. Whilst the number of registered marriages has slowly declined over time, the number of de facto relationships voluntarily
registered is growing on an annual basis. There were 14,626 relationships registered in 2017, over double the number registered only 5 years ago in 2013 (7,281). It is not possible to register de facto relationships in Northern Territory or Western Australia. • In 2017, there were 49,032 divorces granted in Australia, an increase of 2,428 (5.0%) from the 46,604 divorces granted in 2016. The median age of males at divorce was 45.5 years of age and 42.9 years of age for females. • The median age at marriage in 2017 was 32.0 years of age for males, and for females, 30.1 years of age. This is the first time the median age at marriage for females exceeded 30 years of age. Does this accord with your anecdotal experience?

Street Talk - 2019 Resolutions By Kelly MAY
‘NEW Year New You’, was the catch cry of the past few years. 2019 is more about simplifying and self care. News Of The Area took to the streets to hear exactly what some residents are promising themselves for the New Year. Jacki Ashpole said, “My intention for 2019 is to create a simpler life, not be tied down with time consuming things that just cause undue stress.” “So we are going to minimise our family and business life.” Leanne MacKenzie said, “Have less, do more.” “This has been my life motto for a number of years now.” “Every year I consider what I would love to experience the coming year and for me this year it is pleasure.” Summa Trappel said, “My 2019 will involve more timely departures from the office, return of my consistent early morning routine and a cooking class of some description.” Melanie Innes said, “My personal promise

is to be more balanced in my life.” “Dedicating as much time to the things that make me happy as I do to my work.” Elizabeth Keeley said, “I am looking forward to accepting new challenges and adventures and visiting new places.” Jacquie Stokes said, “After a tough 2018, our 2019 New Years Resolution is all about family.” “We devote so much of our time to work that we often don’t have time to cherish those special moments at home.” “2019 starts with a new family home and with that we will be spending more time at home and with our loved ones, and friends we call family.” Skyla Conlon said, “I want to make sure I brush my teeth morning and night!” Samantha Conlon said, “I’m going to read more!” We spend so much of our time doing things to keep everyone else around us calm or happy. So whether your new year’s resolution is to get out more, unplug or simply spend more time doing less. Make 2019 the year of keeping your personal promise.

Children’s Book Launch
q BOOK LAUNCH: Author David Brailey, Kate Washington MP and Illustrator Melanie Carter. By Margie TIERNEY THEY’RE separated by the Singing Bridge, but Tea Gardens local David Brailey and Hawks Nest resident Melanie Carter have crossed the divide, to create a children’s book. David came up with the idea and the words, then asked his friend Melanie to supply the illustrations and the book titled ‘Today’ was born. “I was listening to one of my Grandchildren telling me what he’d done yesterday and in amongst the story he described doing something ‘yesterday night’,” David told News Of The Area. “It’s hard for a three and half year old to understand that when you have a little sleep you wake up on the same day but when you go to bed at night and have a big sleep then you wake up and it’s tomorrow.”
“Once I had the concept, the words came very easily. ‘Today’, explains, yesterday, today and tomorrow and well, as morning, afternoon and night. His friend Melanie Carter was only too happy to create the illustrations. “I’d illustrated for a book before but I’d never done a children’s book.” “I was a bit rusty after putting my artistic skills on hold while I raised four children, but it was great fun.” The Tea Gardens Library officially launched the book. “The Library was involved from the start. They’ve been fantastic, and they were quite happy to buy a copy and it’s now in their catalogue, so that’s fantastic,” David said. David now has plans for another 10 books which he’s calling ‘The Grandpa Series’.

THERE’S plenty to look forward to in the New Year for young Tea Gardens footie player, Taylah Cooke. The 21 year old has just been chosen in the squad for the first ever Country Rugby League Ladies Tackle Championships. “26 girls have been picked for the squad and there’s 17 jerseys,” Taylah told News Of The Area. “So whoever turns up to training and shows they’re determined, will be the ones who walk on the field on the day.”

Taylah has called Tea Gardens home for the past 13 years having moved here with her family from Kurri Kurri. “I’ve been playing footie tag for three years with the Lady Hawks,” Taylah said. “I’d only ever done the 9’s tackle comp for six weeks, so I couldn’t believe it when I tried out for the Country Squad and made it.” At the recent Lady Hawks Presentation Night, Taylah picked up a trio of awards, ‘Best in attack’, Coaches award’ and ‘Players player’. “The Club is so community minded and friendly, I wouldn’t have made it into the footie squad without these girls and the Hawks Club.”
