By Margie TIERNEY TEA Gardens local Don Elliott has been fondly described as ‘One of those blokes who just can’t sit still’. 72 year old Don, a resident of the Estia Aged Care Facility in Tea Gardens, has been putting his time to good use, building an aviary of epic proportions, in Estia’s backyard. “It’s taken me five months, I started from scratch, but I’m pleased with it,” Don said. “I didn’t want it just for me, but for the other residents to enjoy, especially coming into summer.” Don built the aviary using his own money and with help from Home Hardware in Tea Gardens. “I wanted it to be big, I

FROM Page 1 extremely grim for our farmers, with hotter than expected temperatures forecast for September and October. Bulahdelah is pulling out all the stops this weekend with its ‘One for the Farmers’ big day out on Sunday 9 September. The initiative started from a Facebook post by Markwell Valley local, Anne-Marie Barry. “In July this year we went to the Wean Country Picnic races, between Gunnedah and Boggabri,” Anne-Marie told News Of The Area. “Driving down through Dungowan into Tamworth, reality hit.” “Where usually there were lush paddocks of lucerne, we were confronted with brown, dry dusty paddocks,” AnneMarie said. “Ewes that had just given birth were abandoning their babies in search of food and empty dams and creeks.” “Cotton had been harvested but no new crops

DISTRIBUTION & COVERAGE:

Drought Donations By Margie TIERNEY

THE members of the Tea Gardens Mens Shed are doing their bit to help our farmers through the State’s devastating drought. Peter Defal told News Of The Area, “The Committee donated $500 and an additional $1,000 was raised by the members.”

Then came the decision on how to distribute the money. “We contacted the Men’s Shed in Yoeval,” Peter said. Yoeval is a small village in Central Western New South Wales and doing it tough, like all regions west of the ranges. “We’d been in contact with the Yeoval group in the past.” “They were very concerned

for the farmers, farm workers and those who rely on the farmers for their income,” Peter said. So the Tea Gardens members decided that vouchers would be a good way to go and sent the money across to be distributed through the local IGA store. “It may only be a drop in the ocean but every little bit helps,”

Peter said. Food parcels collected and donated by the Karuah Primary School, Karuah RSL Club and the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Motor Club are now on their way to Tamworth. Generous donations were received from members of the RSL, Coles at Tea Gardens, IGA Hawks Nest, Thai Temple Mandalong and Hawks Nest Newsagency.

Parkinson’s Group By Margie TIERNEY PARKINSON’S disease affects about 40,000 Australians, most of whom are over the age of 60. But help is at hand in the Myall, in the form of the Tea Gardens Parkinson’s Support Group. “If you are a person diagnosed with Parkinson’s or a carer this may be of interest to you,” Organiser Garry Boyd

said. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive, degenerative, neurological condition that affects the control of body movement. It causes trembling in the hands, arms, legs, jaw and face and causes difficulty in walking and unstable posture. Unfortunately there is no cure. The Tea Gardens support group is run by Garry Boyd and

Narelle Hawkes, who are both sufferers. “We have a wealth of advice, tips and knowledge to pass on to any recently diagnosed persons,” Garry said. “The Group has a membership of 16 persons and the majority of these have been with us for several years.” The group is also affiliated with Parkinson’s NSW and usually has a guest speaker from the medical profession or support industry at their meetings. “Importantly you will realise you are not alone,” Garry

said. “Members can help make life a little easier with a host of handy hints most of which sufferers may not have been aware of.” The Group meets every second month at the Estia Health Nursing Home at 10.00 am on the first Monday of the month. There is no charge to join the Group. If you are interested please contact either Narelle Hawkes on 4997 0609 or Garry Boyd 0404 279 579 for more information.

Your will is an extremely important document and governs what happens to your assets upon your death. Estate planning, and particularly drafting and interpreting wills, is a complex area of law. Although this is so, people commonly think it is straight forward.

You have spent a lifetime accumulating your wealth and transferring that wealth to the next generation is not necessarily easy. Even in simple family circumstances and with relatively straight forward assets, we often see problems created by self-drafted or selfamended wills. Obtaining estate planning advice and having your will professionally drafted is of great importance. For those who have gone to the effort and expense of doing so in the past, it can be tempting to make small changes

to the will by hand afterward. There are however numerous rules which govern whether a will is validly amended and often these rules are not followed when people amend their wills themselves.

Amending your will yourself can make it difficult for your executor to administer your estate. The amendments you make may not be effective or may have an unintended effect. It may also increase the chances of a dispute arising about the terms of your will or increase the likelihood of a family provision claim being made.

People are often looking to save on the cost of obtaining advice from a lawyer when amending wills themselves. In reality they are often creating the need for additional work to be done after their death and it costs significantly more in the long run.

Volunteers build new footbridge By Margie TIERNEY

LAST Thursday saw a group of local volunteers start work on a project that will enhance the journey of those who enjoy walking through the parkland bounded by Koonawarra Crescent in Hawks Nest. For quite some time now, there’s been no way to cross the creek that runs through the park without heading back to the street. But that’s all about to

change thanks to the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Men’s Shed. President of the Men’s Shed Rob Hughes said, “We got some old piers from the river to make a small bridge.” Tea Gardens local, ‘Lofty’ donated his services and his very large crane to transport the logs and help out with the placement after they were cut and primed by volunteers from the Men’s Shed. There’s still some work to go before the bridge is ready

Women’s Auxiliaries meet at Club By Margaret MUNRIGHT

ON Saturday 25th August ladies from ten Hunter Auxiliaries joined us at the Tea Gardens Country Club to celebrate our 67th birthday. Also present were Mr. Ray James, State Vice-President RSL NSW, his wife Pauline, State President Central Council RSL Auxiliaries and Mrs. June Campbell, Newcastle and Northern Country Councillor. Our President, Annette Taylor welcomed one and all, our Sub-Branch Vice President Ted Mowbray OAM said Grace and Sub-Branch President Terry Munright recited the ODE. Next the draw for lucky door prizes, lucky seat prizes and lots of consultation as each table completed the trivia quiz. The table of smarties won chocolates and the runners up got a packet of Smarties for encouragement. A delicious lunch was served and, not surprising, the volume

dropped as everyone tucked in. The giant cake was cut buy our Patron, Mrs. Mavis Mowbray OAM. Great slices were passed around and enjoyed as the Tombola got underway. Finally a display of quilts made by very clever ladies from various Auxiliaries, were displayed. There was one for Prince Harry and of course, one for his misses, Megan, each in their matching bag. The remainder will be distributed at the Invictus Games in October. Auxiliaries were encouraged to hold sewing bees to make laundry bags for the games’ competitors and ‘so as not to be outdone,’ our ladies ran up sixty six colourful bags. A great keepsake and a job well done girls. It was a wonderful event, warm and friendly, a good time had by all. Congrats to the hard working Committee, as usual, you did us proud.

They secured a place in the finals with a convincing 22-16 win. 1 September Spring arrived with a vengeance today with a very strong south-westerly wind making play uncomfortable for the remaining semi-final of the Club Mixed Pairs contested by Graham and Liz Kelly and Sandra Leisemann and Merv Mills. Merv and Sandra established an early lead and lead by 5 shots at the half-way mark. They managed a 5 on the 11th end to stamp their authority on the game and saw their way into the final with a 20-7 win. Congratulations to both teams for playing in atrocious conditions. The final of the Club Mixed Pairs will be played on Sunday 9 September commencing at 1.00 pm. In other news; The Sunday Bowlers are having a game away with the Belmont Sports Bowling Club, playing at Adamstown Bowling Club on 9 September. There is a visit scheduled next Saturday 8 September from the Bay Bowlers. The event is open to both men and women players. The word is that they are bringing a big team and the more Tea Gardens players participating will give them a good match. Nominations are now open for one of the premier events of the year, the Palm Lake Resort Open Mixed 3 Bowl Pairs scheduled for Saturday and Sunday 13/14 October. This competition, with big money at stake, will have a field limit of 28 teams so get in early for a spot.

Mr LG, Medowie

Nest Ladies Result

Mr LG, I CAN understand your distress here. There is nothing sweeter than the sound of a kookaburra cackling away, or the sight of a mob of lorikeets diving into a birdbath. Your yard sounds like a sanctuary. Of course you want to enjoy it and keep your feathered friends safe.. Ten cats? That seems somewhat excessive. It that even legal? If so, do your neighbours lock up the little treasures at night? Do they have bells around their scrawny little huntergatherer necks (the cats, not the neighbours)? Do they seem approachable (the neighbours, not the cats)? The problem here is that the cats are just doing what cats do. Cats have mannerisms that would seem antisocial in most humans. They bring rancid rats to the doorstep, they spray their scent on curtains, they lick their private parts in public, they cough up fur balls and they claw the bejesus out of your legs when they’re trying to get comfortable. They also instinctively kill or maim, though not necessarily eat, other living things. Don’t let those cute YouTube cat videos fool you. Cats are murderers with foul habits. Have you ever looked into the eyes of a cat, Mr LG? Those eyes are satanic. I do, however, have a very simple solution for you. In the great food chain of life, you simply need to insert your own predator. I would suggest a dog. Not a poky little puppy, but a threatening Rottweiler named Fang with a studded black collar and one of those prisoner restraint masks made fashionable by Hannibal Lecter. If you don’t want the expense of a dog, maybe you could wear the collar and mask as your standard weekend attire when you’re watering the plants (and the cats) along the fence line. Have Nickelback’s ‘Figured You Out’ streaming from the speakers. I think your neighbours will get the message. And the cats. Cats and irresponsible neighbours are not subtle creatures. You need to speak in a language that everyone understands. Comprende?

THE big news of the week is that Tea Gardens Country Club Men’s Bowling Club is pleased to announce the signing of a new sponsor after the long association with Pelican Pest Control came to an end. Michael and John Rumble of Hawks Nest First National Real Estate decided to take up a three-year sponsorship that will also include the Women’s Bowling Club. Both Clubs will now be known as the First National Dolphins with the agreement commencing on 1st January 2019. Michael and John are well known in the area with both being well-known sportsman as well as being actively involved in community projects. We look forward to a long and mutually successful association. 29 August The last days of winter saw 48 players enjoying a sunny day with the ever present breeze keeping the temperature down. Keith Button from the Goulburn Valley backed up for another taste of Tea Gardens hospitality. A little rain early in the week took the edge off the grass green but it made no difference to the five teams who were successful in winning both their games. The winners on 58 points were; Rob Young, Ross Barry and Bill Thrift. 30 August The first semi-final of the Club Mixed Pairs competition was played today with the defending champions, Bette and Col Saillard opposing Robyn and Scott Beaumont. Bette and Col are well known for their draw game and this contrasted with the style of the Beaumont’s who, on this occasion, resorted to a more aggressive style of play that is emerging in the modern game. Call me old fashioned but I’d rather have 50% of something than 100% of nothing. Bette and Col established a good lead and were not fazed with the drives of their

This year the Hunter region is hosting games at Bateau Bay, Branxton, Maitland, Myall Park, Newcastle and Toronto. A total of 92 players are competing in the Championships with eight

men coming to Myall Park for a single’s event. “This is an opportunity to see some very talented competitors, playing this great game,” Sue Dodds said. “It’s a once in a lifetime chance, with spectators

welcome, even for a short time,” Sue said. The competition kicks off at 8.30am at the Yamba Street Croquet home in Hawks Nest on Monday 10 September.

Polak. Lynne claimed victory on the 24th end 155 v 85. Good to see Judi, “newcomer” to bowls having a go at this type of competition. Also great to see Bev Rhodes back playing competition bowls. An amazing achievement as this was only her second game of bowls after a long break following surgery. Bev bowled against Loretta Baker on Rink 3, after 24 ends the score Loretta 157

v Bev 83. A tough battle on Rink 4 between Lynda Richards and Sheril Johnson, neck to neck all the way. On the 11th end both players held shot bowl, measured by the Umpire. This resulted in a very interesting final score, Lynda 1541/2 v Sheril 1451/2 after 29 ends. Result on Rink 5 Robyn Beaumont 150 v Julie Kennedy 110. Sandra Leisemann had a loss to Lorraine Murphy 95

v 155. Thanks to Umpire Kathie Rimmer, the Markers and to the Controlling Body Jo Younghusband. No social bowls were played. The winner of the raffle was Jean Glover. MANNING FUTSAL TOURNAMENT DURING Term 2 Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) competed in the Manning Futsal Tournament and qualified for the NNSW State Champion of Champions. The team recently travelled to Port Macquarie for 2 days of competition. With enthusiasm at a high the Under 16 boys were set to play against old rivals, St Clare’s High School. They played extremely well and were up 2-1 at half time. However, a few mistakes made allowed St Clare’s to finish the game 3-3. Bellingen High School were their next opponents and a few early goals against BCS set the pace against a difficult and determined team, BCS defeated 3-0. The third and final game was a must-win match against Bishop Druitt College to see the boys progress to nationals in Brisbane

in November. Hunter and Beau’s aggressive, coordinated attacks had BCS up 2-0 inside the first 3 minutes of the match. However, inconsistency had let the team down as the final score finished 5-3 against BCS. The boys were disappointed, but held their heads high knowing the achieved something special to make it that far. Due to some late injuries, the Under 19’s side had some of the younger players compete. Game 1 against Heritage Christian College saw the boys behind from the start. Their ‘never give up’ attitude saw them fight back to draw twice against a very hard team, but finally going down 3-2. During game 2 we played a harder, faster and older team from Camden Haven High School and sadly went down 7-0. There was a large break until the next game, realising they had to come up with a win the team

This obviously paid off because during the first 2 minutes of game 3 against Hastings Secondary College, BCS were winning 2-0. This was due to some desperate diving from Hunter and another goal from Beau off the crossbar after Lachlan shot at a shivering Hastings defense from

point blank range. BCS held on to the 2-0 to win. The team knew that the final round game of the day was going to be another ‘do or die’ game. The boys were confident going up against the hardest team in the competition knowing their ability to make nationals would come down to goal difference.

At half time BCS were only down 1-0. Goalkeeper, Saxon, made some of the best saves ever seen at school level. His reflexes and fearless defends kept us in the game. It appeared fitness got the best of the Bulahdelah School in the end as they went down 5-1 and missed out on nationals by only 3 goals.
