q MIDCOAST EXECUTIVE: Stephen Embry.

Executive Stephen Embry addressed a meeting of more than a 100 locals in Tea Gardens explaining why ratepayers would be required to pay, on average, an extra $256 over the next four years. The reaction was far from positive, with former Great Lakes Council residents pointing out that they were already paying at least $200 a year more than their counterparts in the Manning and Gloucester regions. Following the recent Government decision, MidCoast Interim General Manager Glenn Handford said, “While it’s disappointing we’re

unable to make an application at this stage, the merger has allowed us to identify other funding opportunities, through efficiencies and savings that will be dedicated to road renewal.” MidCoast Council says it will also apply to the State Government to allocate $14million of the Stronger Communities funding towards the program for the area’s roads and bridges. With assistance from asset experts, Morrison Low, Council said the condition of almost 50 percent of the sealed road network across the MidCoast region has been categorised as fair to very poor.

Hot cuppa keeps drivers safe By Daniel SAHYOUN BROWN’S Flat rest areas were busy over the holiday period with hundreds of travellers taking advantage of the Driver Reviver stops located on both sides of the Pacific Highway. Volunteers from Bulahdelah Lions Club were stationed southbound and Booral Rural Fire Service members operated the 24-hour northbound site. Brigade Deputy Captain Roger Walton said their members did not hesitate to be involved in the program. “The brigade feels strongly about this, we would rather meet people over a cup of coffee than in accidents,” he said. “We have about 15 members along with their families who provide the service 24/7 over the Christmas period and every weekend until the end of January.” Mr Walton said they

have been operating from the red van for the past 23 years and participated in the program from a tent in Bulahdelah prior to this. Lions Club member Pam Gardener said she got involved because it is an important service that encourages travellers to take regular breaks while driving. “We’ve had some people who are absolutely exhausted when they come here and really need the break,” she said. “It allows them to stop, have a rest and refresh before continuing on their journey.” Aimed at helping to reduce the road toll, more than 200 Driver Reviver sites operated by community groups are open across Australia during holiday periods. The volunteers serve up free cups of Bushells tea and coffee, Arnott’s biscuits and in some cases simply have a chat with the weary drivers.

Appreciative of the service, travellers stopping at the local sites have been very generous with donations. “Many people expect to pay and when we tell them it’s free they put

volunteer members. “You get to work outdoors at the best beach with a great group of people,” he said. “And it’s just a really good thing to be able give back to the community.” ALS has also provided a qualified lifeguard to attend Tea Gardens Pool seven-days-a-week which will continue throughout

the summer. ALS NSW Manager Brent Manieri said this year, lifeguards will be continuing to emphasise preventative actions. “This will ensure that potentially dangerous situations are dealt with before they escalate,” he said. “This could include such actions as encouraging swimmers to swim between the flags and identifying hazards that could

impact on beachgoers’ safety.” ALS lifeguards are also stationed at other beaches throughout the MidCoast Council region including Old Bar, Diamond Beach, Forster, One Mile and Elizabeth Beach at Pacific Palms. This ensures total coverage for an area that is fast emerging as a premium destination for New South Wales families. Mr Manieri praised MidCoast Council for their commitment to

the safety of all beach goers in the area. “We look forward to continuing our strong relationship with Council and delivering a high level of service to the people of the Lower North Coast,” he said. The ALS service will continue until 27 January at Bennett’s beach and 25 April at Tea Gardens pool. The weekend patrols operated by volunteer lifesavers will continue through to the end of the season.

Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF) & Enduring Power of Attorneys (EPOA) The following example from a draft tax ruling illustrates some of the issues in respect to Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF’s) and Enduring Power of Attorneys (EPOA). If this prompts a query from you, give us a call: EXAMPLE: Clare is the sole member of a SMSF. The SMSF trustee is Clear Pty Ltd and Clare is its sole director. The responsibilities of being director of the trustee company of the SMSF have become too difficult and time consuming for Clare. She executes an EPOA to her daughter, Jan, giving her authority to manage Clare’s superannuation affairs in accordance with State legislation. Clare resigns as director of Clear Pty Ltd. Jan is appointed in her place, as per the

Corporations Act and the company’s constitution. Other than the fact that Clare is not the director of Clear Pty Ltd as trustee for the SMSF, the fund satisfies the other requirements of the definition of an SMSF in subsection 17A(1) of the SIS Act. Jan is a legal personal representative for Clare by virtue of holding an EPOA in respect of Clare. In addition, Jan is now director of the body corporate that is trustee of the SMSF in place of Clare. Provided that the EPOA remains valid during the period whilst Jan is the director of the corporate trustee, and given that the other requirements of subparagraph 17A(3)(b)(ii) are satisfied, Clare’s superannuation fund continues to be an SMSF, notwithstanding that Clare is no longer director of the body corporate that is the trustee of her fund.

Festive Season Goodwill By Margie TIERNEY AS we head into a New Year, a little housekeeping in regards to Christmas Day, 2016. As most of us are aware Christmas can often be a lonely time, but not for the 70 people who gathered in the Masonic Hall at Tea Gardens for a lunch put on by locals Sue and Joe Douglas. Now in its 15th year, it has become a tradition that brings so much pleasure to so many. Sue and Joe work for months ahead to bring it all together, and on Christmas Eve a dozen volunteers help with the setting up and food preparation. “It all went really well, we had roast pork, turkey, ham, baked vegetables, plum pudding, fruit cake and white Christmas,” Sue told News Of The Area. Sue and Joe also gave out 28 grocery hampers and bottles of donated wine.

And there was a special prize for the oldest guest, 93 year old Pat Pritchard from Hawks Nest. Sue will be sending out more than 30 thank you cards to the businesses and locals who donate goods and contribute their time to make the Christmas Day Lunch such a special occasion. “Jeffs Quality Meats in Tea Gardens donates the hams and cooks the pork,” Sue said. “We had three people come in on Christmas morning with boxes of chocolates for the volunteers, I don’t know who they were but it was lovely.” Sue also wants to say a special thank you to the Masons who donate the use of the hall and cover the public liability insurance. And as for Christmas 2017, “Of course, while I’m still standing upright and facing towards the sun I’ll definitely keep doing it.”

Expansion for Agency A RECENT cocktail party hosted by R & R Property was a double celebration for Denise Haynes and her team. More than 50 community members gathered at the new R & R Office in Bulahdelah to celebrate the holiday season with an evening of fun, drinks and festive cheer. As the guests merrily mingled, they were also able to view the transformation of the Stroud Street hardware store into a sleek modern office suite. The new R & R Rural and Residential Property office, which is due to open for business on 9 January, is an expansion of the Real Estate Agency based in Stroud. Denise said her team were looking forward to becoming part of the Bulahdelah community. “We are very community focused and we hope Bulahdelah will get to know us,” she said. “It’s all about being part of the community.”

Fire deliberately lit

POLICE investigations indicate a fire which completely destroyed an office building at a sawmill in Bulahdelah was deliberately lit. The office area was well alight when emergency services were called to the mill at about 1.20am on 24 December 2016. The owner, who lives

nearby, attempted to combat the fire while his wife called triple-0 to alert the fire brigade. As a result of the fire, the office area including a weighbridge control room, were totally destroyed and burnt to the ground. Initial investigations at the scene indicate the fire was deliberately lit and expert

forensic police and detectives have now taken control of the investigation. Police report a number of items were seized at the scene and have been taken for DNA examination. A number of other lines of inquiry are also being followed by investigating police.

Holiday Magic Show By Margie TIERNEY IF your children are getting a little bored these school holidays, then help is at hand. Due to popular demand, the Tea Gardens Library is holding another Magic Show with Quenorie Eades. “It’s great fun, the children just love it,” Librarian Carol Johnson told News Of The Area. The entertaining show is a supervised activity and suitable for children aged five to 12. Cost for the show is $5 a child and bookings are essential. The magic comes to the Library on Wednesday 18 January from 2.30pm to 4pm. To get your ticket you can call the Tea Gardens Library on 4997 1265 or go online via http://midcoast.greatlakes. nsw.gov.au/Events-Activities/TeaGardens-Magic-Show-Face-Painting. A reminder too that it is still possible for your children to join the popular Summer Reading Club at libraries across the MidCoast region. The theme for this year’s program is ‘Superheroes and Villains’, and it is open to children in three age groups. “There’s zero to five, primary school and high school groups,” Carol said. “With the pre-schoolers, mums and dads read to them and it’s just as valuable as kids doing independent reading,” Carol said. Holidaymakers can also join the club as long as they are members of the Midcoast Library scheme. “They’ve got to read 10 books to win one of the prizes,” Carol said. Children and their families can register online at www. summerreadingclub.org.au and pick up a reading log and goodies pack from their local Library until Saturday 7 January. For more information, pop into your local library or call 6592 5290.

she collided with the rear of a Holden Cruze causing her vehicle to overturn several times before coming to rest. The driver of the Prado and a passenger in her vehicle were treated at the scene for minor injuries. Police report the driver was travelling at a speed of 120 km/h at the time of the collision. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Following police investigations, the driver of the Prado was issued with an infringement notice for negligent driving.

Parking time limit MIDCOAST Council has approved restricted parking in front of Bulahdelah Rural Transaction Centre. At a recent meeting of Council’s Local Traffic Committee, it was recommended that the parking space directly in front of the building be restricted to 15 minutes. The timed parking will allow greater access for people using the ATM at the building located in

Stroud Street. The Local Traffic Committee recommended that “15-minute parking restriction signs be installed on the street parallel parking space directly in front of the Bulahdelah Rural Transaction Centre.” Administrator John Turner endorsed the recommendation at a MidCoast Council meeting held in December.

FROM small beginnings come great things. Take this weekend’s annual Art & Craft Exhibition and Sale in Tea Gardens. The event has been held every year for over a quarter of a century, but the idea originated with a handful of women who met in a disused Army Hut in the middle of Hawks Nest Golf Course. Back then, it was called the

Hut Group and they held a small exhibition through the Christmas period to show off their creations and raise money for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and the Clinic Bus. Fast forward to 2017 and the Art & Craft Exhibition and Sale is now held over three days and takes up three rooms in the Myall Community Art & Craft centre behind the Tourist Information Office just near the bridge. All money raised still goes back into the community. Secretary Sue Truscott said, “There are still four founding members involved in the current exhibition.” Over the years, the group has donated a defibrillator to the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Surf Club, put more lighting outside the Ambulance Station and still found money to go towards the Rescue Helicopter and Royal Flying Doctor Service. Myall Coast News Of The Area is again proud to be sponsoring and supporting this great local annual event. If books are more your passion, there is also the Rotary Club’s massive sale this weekend at the Hawks Nest Community Centre in Booner Street. More than six thousand books are on sale, both fiction and nonfiction. There is also a huge collection of CDs, DVDs, old LPs and tapes. All proceeds go back into the community to support not-forprofit organisations such as the local Surf Club. Both events are being held over three days from Friday 6 January through to Sunday 8 January.

Matt’s legacy honoured

q PERFORMERS: Kathy Aquilina, Ken Smith, Walter Prowse, Kim Smith, Rhianna Campbell, Tim Cooper, Louise Young and Nikki Legge.

q K en and Kim Smith catch up with Tia Nganwoo from Karuah, last year’s recipient of the Matt Smith Award.

By Daniel SAHYOUN THE Bulahdelah Central School community came together to honour the memory of 2011 school captain Matt Smith at a memorial concert recently held at the school. More than 40 students belted out the latest hits and a couple of golden oldies whilst others pumped out rock and dramatic monologues in recognition of Matt’s passion for music and drama. Staff also entertained the large crowd with maths teacher Walter Prowse and scientist Tim Cooper stealing the show with their virtuosic solos in ‘Sweet Home Chicago.’ The rapturous applause, cheering and spontaneous dancing ensured a memorable end to the year. Former student and one of Matt’s classmates, Rhiannon Campbell from Hawks Nest, presented impressive vocal solos which highlighted her crystal-clear voice. Rhiannon said she always looks forward to performing in the concert. “Matt was a huge part of my school life and had a big

influence on my music as well,” she said. “I performed in the first Matt Smith Concert five years ago, and I’ve been back every year since.” For many of the young musicians, any signs of nervousness were quickly replaced with excitement and pride as they shared their music with the audience. A visit from Santa, the talent of the performers and the enthusiasm of the audience were some of the many highlights during the afternoon. Matt’s parents Kim and Ken Smith told News Of The Area they were proud to see so many students participate in the concert. “There was so much energy, so much love and so much laughter which is Matt all over,” Kim said. “The concert was all about friends having fun and embodied the legacy that Matt left.” The afternoon celebrated the achievements and talents of the former BCS captain whose life was tragically taken in 2011.

Graduation celebrations By Daniel SAHYOUN

MITCHELL Markham celebrated the end of three years of dedicated study when he recently graduated from Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Information Technology. Mitchell’s mum Karen, father Bradford and other family members travelled from Tea Gardens to the university’s campus in Albury to share the big day and help celebrate the young graduate’s achievements. “Having my family down for the graduation was really good,” Mitchell said, “I hadn’t seen them for a

while, so it was really uplifting and very motivational to have them there.” Majoring in Network Engineering, Mitchell is planning on entering the workforce in the technical support area before branching out into network infrastructure. Mitchell told News Of The Area the courses he studied as part of his degree have prepared him well for his future career. “The project management, system analysis, internal operations and wireless technology courses were really useful,” he said. “There was also a lot of

mathematics involved in it, especially binary calculations, which were extremely difficult.” Like many University students, Mitchell said one of the biggest challenges of studying was stretching his limited finances. “Money was definitely tough to manage, I had to stick to a very tight budget,” he said. “I survived on two-minute noodles for a while, but it was definitely worth it in the end.” Although living in Albury while completing his degree, Mitchell said he will always consider Tea Gardens home.

River of Confusion By Margie TIERNEY

CONFUSING, that’s the only word to describe who has the final say when it comes to the maintenance and health of the Lower Myall River system. Here’s why. Crown Lands owns the seabed, Marine Parks has the responsibility from the water surface down to the sea bed, while National Parks and Wildlife is responsible for the water surface upward, that’s above the water line (within national parks). Then add to the mix, MidCoast Council, Port Stephens Council, the Department of Primary Industries and associated State Government agencies. Is it any wonder there’s confusion and red tape? The Department of Primary Industries recently invited a delegation from the Myall River Action Group to

a workshop with community and council representatives to discuss the Ports of Crowdy Head, Tuncurry and Tea Gardens. The Tea Gardens group was comprised of Peter Pritchard, Clarrie Davison and Gordon Grainger. The aim of the workshop was to get feedback on the future of port assets both social and economic. “It was obvious from the beginning that this was a typical talk fest,” Gordon Grainger (MRAG) told News Of The Area. “The Department of Primary Industries wanted a wish list into the future,” he said. “We took the opportunity to underline just where Crown Lands/DPI had failed us in the past and how that failure was continuing.’’ ”We also pointed out that State funds were necessary to support Council in the

maintenance of the (Eastern) shortcut channel and that financial assistance was needed to dredge the Gut. “A cheque for $200 thousand dollars would complete the project,” said Mr Grainger. “The restrictive and confusing responsibilities of Crown Lands need to be addressed,” Mr Grainger said. “The ownership of all seabeds and the necessity of numerous approvals to conduct any activity is onerous and involves many State Agencies reporting to the same Minister.” “It is time consuming, confusing and in need of revision,” said Mr Grainger. The Myall River Action Group is calling on the community to join together as a collective voice to bring these anomalies to Government attention before the next State election scheduled to be held in 2019.

Dear News Of The Area, I WOULD like to mention something that you might be able to follow through. This year Santa on the fire truck did not appear to get past Hawks Nest, in other words he did not come down to Winda Woppa as has been done in the past. Sadly we and others had four grandchildren, aged four to ten years, sitting waiting as we do every year for them to come by. If there was a reason we would be pleased to know why?

progressed, Bulahdelah Bowling Club came alive with laughter as the group reminisced about their trips to Jindabyne and Canberra and gossiped about their teachers. Reunion organiser and

former school captain Megan Smith said most people hadn’t changed too much since leaving high school. “Everyone’s obviously grown and become a bit more worldlier after 20 years, but it is nice that

underlying is the same people and personalities,” she said. “We shared some great life experiences that have probably been part of the reason that we have come back together to remember

where we came from.” The reunion, which was held in December, was the first time the group had formally got together since finishing school. Megan told News Of The Area she was hoping there would be many more to come. “We weren’t able to contact everyone which is a bit of a shame, so I’m hoping that the reunion might ignite a regular thing,” she said. “Hopefully next time we can spread that a bit broader and connect with everyone who had been part of our year group at some stage from Kindergarten through to Year 12.” Megan said kicking off the reunion was in part an effort to build a school alumni community. “I hope that in time we can develop a community of exstudents who can give back to, and assist in inspiring and influencing the choices and paths of current and future students,” she said. “One thing that surprised me was a discussion around other reunions, perhaps there have been some but not to the knowledge of those of us there.” Megan said she was hoping the recent reunion would start the ball rolling on similar events.

What happened to Winda Woppa?

In some years past you have published in the paper the route Santa will be taking and if that had been done we might have known he was not coming down and we could have taken the kids to a point to connect with him. Would very much appreciate what you can do. Many thanks. Ray Iddon Winda Woppa

Not all Old Fogies BOWLING Karuah RSL Men’s Bowls Club By Trevor DAVIES I HAD the opportunity again today to witness the biased negative perception pushed in some media outlets regarding the sport of lawn bowls. It almost seems as though some media outlets, which are supposed to communicate the full spectrum of the world to their users, have defaulted to a black and white view of our sport and that is that only very old people play it. Perceptions and preconceptions can be comforting in their familiarity.

They can convince those who hold them of their clear understanding of the topics that their perception or preconceptions are about. Examples – well we all know that more money is always good. Beautiful people are always happy. Bad things only happen to bad people. Politicians are always dodgy and uncaring about the common person and lawn bowlers are all doddering old Fogies. In fact, the thinkers of the world of course know that “the pursuit of money can be the root of all evil”, beautiful people can be as unhappy as anyone else, bad things can and do happen to good people, there are some honest and caring pollies who do care about you and me AND that there

are many great young lawn bowlers. The Bowling sport has many young champions and the Australian teams who recently cleaned up in the world championships were all under 40 with many in their 20s. The present Australian national men’s singles Club Champion is 16 years old. Karuah’s present men’s club singles champion is a younger bowler and our club has generated some wonderful younger bowlers at least one of whom has gone on to national and international glory. So, perceptions are not always accurate. Do you enjoy the company of others? Do you presently play a competitive sport? Are you a competitive person, and are you between 10 and 80 years of age? Depending on your answers, perhaps you should challenge the

the average speed of motorists during the same period was more than 7 km/h above the speed limit. When compared to data collected in June 2016, the recent figures indicate an increase in the speed travelled by motorists on the road. Manager Design and

popular misconceptions and have a go at lawn bowls. Interestingly and again, against all perceptions, more and more people of all ages are actually now giving bowls a try. Many are doing it via organised social functions known as “barefoot bowls”, but it’s also possible to give the sport a try as an individual or a couple or as a family. Our club at Karuah offers free introductory sessions for those wanting to test their talents at this easy to play but skilful sport. From mid January, Sunday morning social bowls will offer free introductory sessions and a chance to play in a social game. It’s a great game for couples and families allowing a sporting pursuit that can be played together. Our club resumes Tuesday and Thursday mixed social competitions as well as Sunday morning bowls (and breakfast) and we will be Investigation Kumar Kuruppu tabled the figures at the December meeting of the Local Traffic Committee. Mr GJ, Nelson Bay Oh, GJ, I feel your pain. It’s the coastal factor. Have you seen holiday rental prices in the Bay? I once had a visitor who hung around the house for two years. I ended up marrying him for a host of reasons that may or may not have included lust, tax benefits and mechanical aptitude. But enough of that, let’s get to the task at hand. You don’t have in-laws visiting, you have outlaws intruding. When you give something its correct title, it is easier to navigate. Christmas lunch? That is so last year. It is the rooster that you need to start impersonating if you want your ‘guests’ to leave. Crow from the time the sun rises. Crow about any old thing. Poke your chest out and do it loudly and proudly. Screech about the old-person underwear hanging on your shower rail. Cock-a-doodle-do about the mounting food bill. It is a great night out, so come and join fellow art enthusiasts and perhaps book a table at the hotel for dinner afterwards. The exhibition continues from 9am until 3pm on Saturday 14. The artists look forward to welcoming you.

TWO people were taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition following a collision between a car and a truck south of Bulahdelah. Police report the truck was travelling northbound on the Pacific Highway at about 1.00am on 31

December when it collided with the rear of a car driving in the same lane. The collision resulted in both vehicles veering off the highway and into the bush. The driver and passenger of the car were transported to hospital

in a serious but stable condition. Police report the truck was travelling at a speed of approximately 80 km/h at the time of the crash. Police inquiries into the cause of the collision are continuing.

starting club championships and forming mid week and weekend pennant teams in the coming few weeks. If you would like to have a try and participate in this great sport (for ALL ages), now is the perfect time, give us a ring at the club. So, perceptions can be wrong, but, mind you – this week I watched a story on morning news TV that told how it was now possible for many more people to live to be 100! One of the things suggested to help in this was to engage in a steady but non-exhausting exercise regime. At this stage they showed some stock footage of some older lawn bowlers. Rather than being frustrated at this usual misconception regarding bowlers, I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe, just maybe, bowling is the secret to living a longer life. See you at Karuah.

Unhappy Visitors OPINION Dear News Of The Area,

I rented an apartment in Beach Road, Hawks Nest for the Christmas Week for members of my family. $2000 per week in peak time in a desirable location is to be expected. What is not to be expected for that amount of money, nor should be tolerated, is a filthy, cobweb ridden apartment with basic amenities and broken fixtures. Also unacceptable is a defensive and unhelpful response to what are legitimate complaints. This is not the way I believe our beautiful area should be sold. It is up to the agents to ensure that owners charge rents appropriate to the properties and not look upon this period as an opportunity to price gouge. Helen Watkins Hawks Nest
