BULAHDELAH Mum Erin Matheson, said although juggling work, weekend sport and caring for her two children is challenging at times, she wouldn’t have it any other way. “The best part of being a mum is the simple things...the smiles, the laughs, the cuddles and making lasting memories together as a family,” she said. “I enjoy being involved in everything my boys are interested in, because it’s these moments that you never get back, they just grow up too quickly.” With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Erin’s sons Blake and Charlie are busy planning a few surprises to show their mum how much they appreciate everything she does.

As her mum still lives in Chicago and they see each other as regularly as the distance allows, Erin said she is grateful to have the support of her Mother-in-Law Maureen. Maureen, who has four adult children and

In addition to working full time, keeping the house running and ferrying children around, like many mums, Erin is also heavily involved in the community. As one of the driving forces behind the Bulahdelah Junior Cricket Club, Erin said any spare time is devoted to fundraising, training sessions and organisation.

their appreciation to all the volunteers, local businesses and sponsors; Hunter Quarries, Karuah RSL, Karuah Progress Association, KWT and The Shed Company.” But after ten years, organisers are looking to the next decade and are calling on the community, both local and wide ranging, to have their say on the future of the Festival. Artistic Director Glenyss Rae has been involved in the festival since it kicked off in 2009. “We have an amazing bunch of organisers and volunteers who make the Festival possible, but after ten years it is time to enlist some new blood,” Ms Rae said.

“The great thing about this year’s festival was the positive and passionate feedback from many of our repeat punters.” “We hope to draw some of those people to a meeting to give us honest and constructive feedback, and maybe some will put up their hand to contribute to future Festivals.” To that end, a public meeting is being held at the Karuah RSL on Wednesday 20 June from 6pm. On the agenda, the date for the festival, the formation of an independent not for profit festival body, possible name change and options for the Festival location.

Gifts of Love By John SAHYOUN

IT’S that time of year again, the day when you thank your mum for forcing you to eat all those green vegetables as a child and for eventually turning you into a responsible citizen. But with so much commercialism surrounding special celebrations these days, a group of Myall Coast mum’s agree that gifts made with love are the ones most treasured. Mel Smith said she always looks forward to opening the Mother’s Day gifts made by her two teenage daughters. “They always make me homemade cards which I love,” she said. “My favorite present has been a voucher book they made with coupons for chores and a few little luxuries.” For Vanessa Shultz, the jewelry boxes and candelabra her children made at school many years ago still have a special place in her home. “But my favourite present has been the plates they made at

Ms Haynes said, “I am incredibly proud to have won and accepted these awards from the Midcoast Business Chamber on behalf of the R & R Property Team. It is nice to be acknowledged for your dedication and hard work and I am especially pleased for the team to have their hard work noticed and appreciated.” Not only was the Agency recognised, but so was Ms Haynes individually. News Of The Area spoke to Denise Haynes after the event and she told us, “I was also humbled to be presented personally as the Winner of the Outstanding Business Leader category.” “It was really quite overwhelming as we work so hard to achieve excellence in this area.” “We never take our customers for granted, treating them with the utmost respect, acknowledging that without them, we don’t have a business,” she said.

Most of us understand that once a judgment in a Court case is entered, it is final (except for any appeal rights). One minor exception, commonly known as the ‘slip rule’, is where an obvious error was made in a judgment or order. In the case of such an error, it can be corrected under the slip rule without the necessity for an appeal. Slip rule applications are relatively rare. Even rarer was the situation that arose in 2016 when the Court was asked to make a slip rule correction to a judgment affecting a person who had become bankrupt. Under the Bankruptcy Act when a person becomes bankrupt, a creditor cannot “take any fresh step” in Court proceedings, except by leave. The issue the Supreme Court had to determine, was whether making a correction under the slip rule amounted to a “fresh step”. If so, the correction was not possible except by leave of the Federal Court (as opposed to the Supreme Court,

where the proceedings had been instituted).

There was no authority directly on point, so the judge had to reason from first principles as to what was permitted. Ultimately, the judge reasoned that while, in some situations, taking steps after judgment had been entered might constitute “fresh steps”; in this instance what was proposed was a reduction of the amount of the judgment that had been entered and the judge did not think that constituted a fresh step. As a matter of pragmatism, the Court also noted it was unlikely anyone would challenge a reduction of the judgment, as opposed to an increase.

The judge’s logic appears to have been vindicated as the decision was given in November 2016 and, so far as we are aware, there has been no challenge to it: Amazon Pest Control Pty Ltd (No. 2) [2016] NSWSC 1590.

NAPLAN Goes Online By Daniel SAHYOUN

THE annual NAPLAN tests kick off next week and students at Bulahdelah Central School will be amongst the first to take the test online. In preparation, a School Readiness Test was conducted in 2017 and students sat an online practice test earlier this year.

Many were moved to tears by the presentation given by Aso Ioapo from Tuvalu who came as a representative of the Tuvalu Climate Action Network and of his Church.

The eight islands that make up Tuvalu have a population of 10,640 and the highest point is just over 4 metres above sea level. Dear Jasminda,

Shearwater-over the hill and far away Dear News Of The Area, SUMMER is behind us, not that one can totally breathe a sigh of relief, bush fires aren’t confined to the summer months. Each Spring for the past three years, we have endeavoured to have the neglected public reserve abutting our property and our neighbours at Shearwater maintained through ground fuel reduction. Following yet another marathon of phone calls, we finally located a branch of the NSW Rural Fire Service- not our local representatives with their wealth of local knowledge and personal accountability, no, these ‘experts’ were from Stroud, Maitland or somewhere over the hill. The troop eventually graced us with their presence, way past their accepted hazard reduction period, because they are very busy people with very ‘other’ important jobs to complete. They arrived dressed head to toe in impressive hi-vis clothing, they pirouetted around our properties, a beautifully

choreographed dance, grouping together with heads nodding, chanting their pearls of wisdom, an Oscar worthy display. When the dance was completed they jump into their getaway car and ‘puff’ they rode off into the sunset, not a follow up letter with suggested solutions, clean up timetables or ongoing hazard reduction plans, no, only the glossy pack ‘Get Ready for A Bush Fire – Four Simple Steps to Making Your Bush Fire Survival Plan’ complete with a suggested Call Triple Zero. This fine display will no doubt be repeated again next Summer or when these very important people who are very busy doing very important other things return for an encore. At this point you would be wondering how impressive Council’s performance was, well, it was a very insignificant display, which left us disappointed we had even bothered to book! Desperate Mrs KN, Raymond Terrace

Dear Mrs KN, OKAY, as I started to read your problem, Mrs KN, I was picturing a lad of around 23. I saw him there, on your lounge, his grotty feet making marks on the white leather, his chip crumbs falling between the cracks, his latest Netflix binge session turned up to the highest possible volume on yet another inappropriate show with lots of swearing and nudity, and you in the kitchen cooking his baked dinner, not forgetting the mint sauce (homemade of course) and the jacket potatoes (crisp) and beans (cut diagonally because they look better that way) and I was feeling sorry for you. But then I read that he was 36 and instead I thought you must be a sucker for punishment, Mrs KN. Why didn’t you kick him out 10 years ago? You are not doing him any favours, you know, or his future wife if he’s lucky enough to ever find one after all this weird Freudian behaviour. Do you make his bed? Iron his underwear? Hang out his washing? Pack his lunch as he heads off to his high-profile job in the city? What does your husband think of all this? Or has he given up in despair? You need to remove all domestic services and then see if your son still wants to hang around. I think he will suddenly desire that necessary stage of life known as adulthood and you will discover the freedom you deserve after all those years of playing the overprotective parent. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Myall Lakes Aquatic Club By Daphne MOTUM OUR Annual Spit Roast was held at Korsman’s Landing on 27th - 29th May. This always proves to be a popular outing because of the accessibility for cars as well as boats plus the attraction of the hot roast meal. Many of our functions are now possible to attend without having to come by boat. Congratulations must go to two of our members who recently graduated from university - Mitchell Blanch proudly collected a Bachelor of Mechanical engineering with Class 11 Division 1 honours and Rebecca Muddle achieved a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics with Honours Class 11 and she was also awarded a Faculty of Health and Medicine Medal. The next wharf project for the Aquatic Club is to be an upgrade fo Shedden’s Landing at Tamboy. We are still struggling with National Parks to get started on the upgrade to the wharf at Engel’s. Our next outing will be a function at Mungo on 28th May. Easy access for everyone. For more information ring Secretary Linda on 49971597.

Even though I love my son, I really think it is time for him to leave home. The problem is, he doesn’t seem to have any intention of going. I don’t want to hurt his feelings. He is 36.

Karuah. Grade 4 played at Karuah and despite the Mark Hair team winning one match, the remaining teams hit too many walls in the concluding stages to win the Master Board. Karuah won 64-45. The Grade 6 side, playing at home were also disappointing with the match even with each team having just five ends to play. Tea Gardens lost their momentum and Karuah ran out easy winners at the end.
