Education Week highlights opportunities

q

EDUCATION Week was celebrated last week in Myall Coast Schools with a mass of activities showcasing the variety of opportunities available to local students. The packed programs around the region included a range of sporting, cultural and academic highlights reflecting the achievements of students and the efforts of many dedicated staff. These included snow trips to Jindabyne, an excursion to Canberra, public speaking competitions, performances, displays, Grandparents Day

and special assemblies. Open Days once again proved popular and gave students the chance to share their learning experiences with their family members. This year’s Education Week theme, ‘Shared stories, better learning, stronger communities,’ acknowledged the role of public schools in their community. Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli said better learning is a shared goal across the board.

Speaking with News Of The Area Heath said, “Carrying the torch was incredibly special.” “Wade Park was absolutely brimming with people, everyone was out and taking part in it with me,” he said. “When you compete you're away from your community, so it was amazing being able to share that moment with so many people.” Heath said returning home from Beijing in 2008 with three gold medals and two world records was an “unbelievable highlight.” “Beijing was the culmination of all the previous hard work and executing three perfect races was a personal high,” he said. “This also reflects the efforts put in by my entire support crew, including my

mum.” Heath said winning his first Paralympic gold medal in Sydney on home soil as an 18-year-old was another career highlight. Away from the track, Heath has been the recipient of many accolades including an Order of Australia Medal in 2001. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Business Degrees from the University of Newcastle while training at the Australian Institute of Sport. Since retiring from competition, Heath said he is “most proud” of his involvement with “many amazing charities” including raising over $40, 000 for the Australian Himalayan Foundation. Census 2016

TUESDAY 9 August was Census night with 24 million people in 10 million households across the country taking part. Census forms and login codes were delivered to households in the Myall Coast Region by Field Officers in the lead-up to Census night. Households who have not completed their Census forms, either online or by filling out the traditional paper form, are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. A spokesperson for the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said participation in the Census is compulsory. “Field Officers will revisit residents who have not completed their Census forms to remind them to do so,” the spokesperson said. “Fines of $180 a day may apply to those households who do not complete the Census within a reasonable

time period.” The ABS spokesperson told News of the Area household visits will occur from mid-August to early September. New South Wales Census Director Liz Bolzan said this year’s digital approach would result in better and more accurate data and save Australian taxpayers more than $100 million. “Excitingly, more than 65 per cent of households, or 15 million people, were expected to complete the Census online,” Ms Bolzan said. “We are a digital nation and it’s important we move with the times.” Although there has been criticism of the 2016 Census in relation to privacy and access to online facilities, Bulahdelah resident Carol Tattersall had no issues completing the Census electronically.

q CENSUS: A local Field Officer delivers a Census form to Carol Tattersall. “Completing this year’s census online wasn’t any different to completing a paper form. All you are doing is answering questions, it’s the same regardless of how it is done,” Mrs Tattersall said. “It is a great way for the government to better understand the needs of people living in rural areas in terms of federal funding and what services they may need.” Data collected from the 2016 Census

will support funding decisions for services and infrastructure including housing, transport, education, industry, hospitals and the environment. The results from the 2016 Census are expected to be released in April 2017. People requiring a new login number or help completing the Census can call the Census Inquiry Service on 1300 214 531.

FROM a simple hand-shake to doing up a buckle and using a pair of scissors, there is no denying everyday tasks can be challenging for left-handed people. International Left Handers Day is celebrated on Saturday 13 August and aims to raise an awareness of the challenges lefthanded people face in the righthand dominated world. Fifteen-year-old Tea Gardens left-hander Katie Nolan-Slattery said her biggest challenge was handwriting. “Writing left-handed is frustrating, the ink stains the side of your hand when you write,”

she said. “The only way to avoid smudging is to write on a slant, which makes it very untidy.” Katie also said playing the guitar was frustrating as the strings needed to be put on in reverse order for left handers. Left-handed University student Madison Murrell from Bulahdelah said everything was designed for right-handed people making everyday tasks difficult. “University lecture desks are made for right-handers meaning you need to reach to the opposite side which gives you very little space to work,” she said. “Writing in binder folders and

spiral notebooks is impossible for left-handers without removing the pages first.” Ms Murrell told News of the Area she had to learn to play hockey right-handed as she was not permitted to participate in the team sport left-handed for safety reasons. Other challenges faced by lefthanders include using simple kitchen utensils such as can openers and vegetable peelers and cutting a straight line using right-handed scissors. Research shows most children have a preference for using one hand by the age of around 18 months, and are definitely right

or left-handed by the age of three. Although there is no definitive answer on why some people are left handed, the Left Handers Club suggests hand preference is linked to genetics. According to the Left Handers Club, the left side of the brain controls the right-hand side of the body and vice-versa which is why they say, “Only left-handers are in their right minds.” It is estimated that 10 percent of the world’s population is lefthanded. Well-known Australian lefthanders include cricketer Allan Border, actress Nicole Kidman and tennis great Rod Laver.

Wednesday 13 July between the hours of 8.00am and 5.00pm. The theft was noticed when members of the volunteer organisations went to collect the tins and noticed they were missing. CCTV footage is being examined to identify the offender. The donation tins are used to raise vital funds for the Bulahdelah Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA) and Rural

Fire Service (RFS). VRA Commander Peter Mostyn said it is very disappointing that the muchneeded funds were stolen. “Both the VRA and RFS are struggling for funds and it is unfortunate that some feel the need to steal donations given by the community,” Mr Mostyn said. “It is more than just the issue of the money being stolen, it is about funds that we cannot use to assist people who need our

help.” Mr Mostyn said the theft was “a huge blow to the service” as donations are used to replace equipment. Members of the public with information relating to the incident are urged to contact police. Police advise any information given will be treated in the upmost confidence.

Donation tins stolen POLICE are seeking information in relation to the theft of two donation tins from a local Service Station. Police report the tins were stolen from the front counter of a Bulahdelah Service Station on

In the recent case of Hall & Hall the High Court determined that the Full Court of the Family Court had correctly concluded that an order for interim spousal maintenance should end. The Family Law Act provides for a spouse to pay maintenance to the extent that they are reasonably able to do so if the other spouse is unable to adequately support themselves. the lump sum payment. The wife stated that she had not received any payment but acknowledged that she had not requested any payment. The Judge dismissed the husband’s application. On appeal the Full Court found that the wife – who had received two luxury cars from her brothers – would have received the annual payment if she had asked for it. As such the Full Court held that the order for interim spousal maintenance should be dismissed as she was able to adequately support herself. The High Court, on appeal by the wife, held that the Full Court’s determination was open on the evidence and therefore dismissed the appeal.

Students wears Amazing wildlife of dolphins to be preserved Jeans for Genes Day DOLPHINS make the Myall Coast and indeed all of Port Stephens and Mid Coast Great Lakes region a very special place. It is rare not to see them somewhere in the river, ocean or port, whether you are strolling along the waterfront, walking along the amazing beaches within the region or even crossing the Tea Gardens Singing Bridge. Adrienne Ingram from the Myall Koala and Environment Group said, “There are more than 100 dolphins in the Port Stephens catchment area, though like humans, the

numbers change as visiting dolphins come and go.” “Volunteers with this year’s Port Stephens Dolphin Census sighted 86 in one hour on a wet and windy winter’s day, and Lisa Skelton from Marine Parks Association says another study has observed 251 individuals over a twoyear period,” Ms Ingram said. “Maybe our fascination has something to do with the way dolphins inhabit the margin between their water and our air.” Dolphins need to surface to breathe every 30 seconds to 30 minutes, so

we glimpse them glistening and they disappear, over and over again. Ms Ingram said the Environment Group are doing many great things to help protect and preserve the precious wildlife around our region. “Drop your 5-cent coins into the Koala Jar at the Holiday Coast Credit Union, Myall Quays shopping centre, Tea Gardens,” Ms Ingram said. Podiatrist new to area Caught

driving with suspended licence

By Rachel REITSMA

PODIATRY is an important health service as walking without pain and being mobile has a huge impact on the quality of one's life. Dorothy Williams (BSc BHSc(PI)) has set up a clinic in Bulahdelah after moving to the area only recently from Sydney. Dorothy has owned a property in Wootton for over 15 years and often came to the Great Lakes area to holiday but has now made the permanent transition. Dorothy Williams' website www.dotpod.com.au explains the services on offer and Myall Coast News Of The Area sat down with Dorothy to talk about who will benefit from this health service. The majority of Dorothy's clients are elderly and Dorothy has experience working in Nursing Homes. She has a passion for the elderly to have healthy feet and stay independent and mobile for as long as possible. Arthritis can make it harder to reach the feet and keep toe nails in a good condition. Dorothy also can help with ingrown nails, corns, callus', cracked heels, bunions and many other conditions that affect the use of the feet. Dorothy has studied different medical conditions that can have effects on the feet like diabetes. Patients can be referred to

A LOCAL man will appear in court in relation to driving with a suspended licence.

day and issued a Field Court Attendance Notice in relation to the offence. According to the RMS, driving whilst disqualified or with a cancelled or suspended license carries a maximum fine of $3,300 for a first offence.

Hunter New England Health have expressed that they are pleased to have a local offer this podiatry service rather than sending down a foot doctor from Gloucester or Taree. Dorothy has a clinic on Monday mornings at the

Bulahdelah Dental Practice on Stroud Street and a clinic on Wednesday mornings at the Bulahdelah Hospital. She is also happy to do home visits throughout the Great Lakes area from Karuah to Nabiac.

POLICE are appealing for members of the public with information relating to the theft of a trailer to contact them. The trailer was parked and secured at an address in Bulahdelah and was stolen between 26 and 27 July.

Police report the trailer is white in colour and is a flatbed type with dual axles and has a registration number of TB-08-EF. Police are seeking information relating to the theft.

SINCE I last wrote to News Of The Area, further erosion has occurred on The Boulevard. Unearthed are more of the buried hay bale debris. There are stacks of Cats Heads prickles and more hay bale wrapping twine. It is in the water, along the beach and in some cases wrapping around objects including mangrove roots near the river mouth. The twine is hazardous to wildlife and could easily strangle birds, crabs, fish, turtles and more. I believe most decent

people, regardless of their environmental beliefs or political persuasions, don't want to see entangled suffering wildlife. I therefore presume for the benefit of all that the Council will be cleaning up this mess they have inadvertently created. If they forget, I presume Marine Parks Officers will be investigating. Just as they would investigate and possibly fine you or I if we deposited such material into the sea. Christian Patteson Hawks Nest

Faster resolutions for Foreshore Group

Dear News Of The Area, THE long awaited Reference Group meeting was held on Wednesday 3 August, the delays due to the recent Council amalgamation and the resulting overlapping duties of

Council officers. The amalgamation has resulted in more autonomy for the Group, which will no longer depend on the availability of Council officers to convene meetings. The Group will make decisions, within budget

limitations and submit their recommendations to Council for completion. The change should result in faster resolutions and make the Marine Drive foreshore a feature that the community can be proud of. Council has confirmed an amount of $50,000 has been allocated for the foreshore improvements and recently elected David Gillespie is providing an additional $25000 from Federal funds to be used in addition to Council funding. These funds are to be used for new works; the on-going replacement / maintenance will remain Council responsibility. The meeting was informed that whilst improvements to the foreshore will be the function of the Group, decisions made by Council will proceed and will include the removal of the remaining 5 coral trees, most probably within the next month.

Lautrec Garlic Festival Dear News Of The Area, THREE weeks have now passed since returning to France. As previously mentioned, our arrival coincided with the terrorist attacks in Nice. Since then an 86 year old priest, Father Jacques Hamel, was murdered in his church at Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray near Rouen by two youths who were subsequently shot dead by police. In many ways this latest attack has cut deeper into the core of French values than any before. An elderly priest in a church - age and religion are sacrosanct in France. As such, the whole country remains in a state of high alert and will most likely stay this way for the foreseeable future. Many significant events have already been cancelled, such as the braderie (flea market) in Lille this weekend, the largest in Europe, which attracts between one and two million people. On Friday 5th August the annual Lautrec festival of

The reason is based on inspections by arborists, who confirmed the trees are damaged, have no hope of recovery and are a risk to public safety. The Group has always argued against the removal without replacement trees and to date only two suitable Port Jackson trees have been located and planted. The Reference Group will make efforts to locate an additional 5 trees and it may be necessary to plant younger trees than originally hoped for. Efforts to locate these replacements are now a priority. Projects such as additional mooring capacity, the Anzac Park foreshore stabilisation, and dinghy storage are under the scope of the consultants, Royal Haskoning, who will be making their presentation in the near future. Previously agreed projects identified under the ”Better Boating

Program” including the additional public wharf and the shelter for ferry passengers are in the “to do folder “and should be undertaken within this financial year. Details will be advised by MidCoast Council. Whilst not within the Groups’ field, questions have been asked re the completion of road improvements along Marine Drive between Charles Street and the Co-Op and we can advise that works will begin in September and expected to be completed early December. The section will remain two- way, with current speed limits remaining. The Group will reconvene in the near future to prioritise identified projects and beautify the Marine Drive foreshore for all to use. Gordon Grainger Marine Drive Foreshore Reference Group

Myall River host semi-finals

LEAGUE

Myall Rugby League By Neil REYNOLDS A LATE decision by the Hunter Valley Combined Junior League Competition saw Myall River Junior Rugby League host semifinals at Myall Park on Saturday. In miserable conditions, a strong and supportive crowd witnessed a great days League. The “Tea Gardens Fencing” 8’s played their final competition game to open the day. The mini league divisions do not play semi-finals, however are part of organized gala days. They will compete at Macquarie Oval next Sunday

to complete their season. The “Tea Gardens Country Club” 13’s played a qualifying game against Raymond Terrace in the next game. Tough conditions needed tough play, and Myall River responded. Dylan Long, Noah Battle, and Will Markham did the hard yards up front. Riley Wilton directed from dummy half, while halves Harry Plummer and Angus Devon were in the action all day. Half time score was nil all, which indicated the level of action. 10 minutes into the second half Raymond Terrace scored two tries

against the run of play. Myall River hit back with a try out wide to Angus Devon, and was attacking the line for a long time in the second half. Raymond Terraces’ defence was solid, and hung on for a win. Noah Battle was named man of the match, while Dylan Long was voted the ‘player’s player’. The 13’s will play Cessnock in an elimination game next Saturday. The “JR Richards” 15’s played Newcastle Wests in the elimination semi-final. The team had suffered defeat in the same game for the last two seasons. A determined effort saw them eke out a tough 12

Myall Coast Mudcrabs ROUND 15 of the Lower Mid North Coast Competition saw the Myall Coast Mudcrabs clash with the Manning River Ratz last Saturday at Myall Oval, Hawks Nest in cold and drizzling conditions with the win going to the Ratz 27-17. The match was tough from beginning to end with the Muddies fielding a much smaller side against a powerful Ratz pack. With an emphasis on strong defence and with no “extras” on the bench, the Muddies trailed 10 nil at the

half-time break. A couple of quick Ratz tries in the second half blew the score out to 27nil, however, in the last fifteen minutes the Muddies knuckled down and scored 17 points in a dogged effort. Reinforcement for the Muddies by a number of players who were unavailable last round will ensure a strong, competitive side for the minor semifinal against Manning River Ratz at Forster this coming Saturday, 13 August 2016. Bros, James and Tim Farmer, were outstanding in both attack and defence and once again strongly

supported by Jackson Page, continuing to improve in his new position, Harry Weir and “father of the year” Evan MacLachlan. Blake Gibson in the backs was the “go forward” man, supported by Tristan Tansey, Sonny Marks and “youngin”, Trent Page. Recently, our home game supported the Beyond Blue Foundation with $700.00 raised which has been forwarded to the Foundation for ongoing research. On the day, the winner of our Season Raffle (large blue esky) was Neil Davy. Congratulations Neil. Go the Muddies!

BOWL

TUESDAY 2 August: Despite

the weather being on the cooler side and the cloud cover looking suggestive of rain, there was a good turn up at bowls and thankfully

stepped up a level in the tough stuff. The 15’s will play Waratah Mayfield in an elimination game next week Venues and times for semi-finals on Saturday Aug 13th are to be advised. The “Tea Gardens Masonic Centre” 11’s blazed into third spot on the ladder with a last minute win against Newcastle West’s in the final competition round on Saturday. A coveted try to Zane Peitsch had Myall River trailing 12 points to six with five minutes to go. Zane Ridley scored two unanswered tries as the clock ticked down, to elevate the team to the qualifying

point to six win. Myall River got to a comfortable 12 to nil lead with converted tries to Tom Lidbury, and Bradley Marshall, early in the first half. Going into “relax mode”, they allowed Wests back into the game with a try off several unforced errors. Taking a 12-6 lead into the second half, a rousing defensive effort kept the score line the same throughout the game. Best for Myall River was Aden Hawkins, who played a dominate game. Kye Cotterill and Reefe Lesley were strong, and winger Jayden Helm asked questions of the west’s defence all day. Rex Shelton and Jyson Wolfram

the sun did eventually shine midway through play. The format for the day was three games of triples and a game of fours.

Everyone had a great day of bowling. The winners with the lowest margin were Pam Gilchrist, Bev Rhodes and Maynie Roberts, this team winning by one on the final end after a very close game

semi-final. The 11’s will play Wangi at Wangi on Saturday. The game will kick off at 12 noon. The Tea Gardens Hawks won on forfeit against Newcastle University on Sunday. University could not back up from the previous week’s heavy defeat. The points elevated the Hawks into third spot, after Cardiff had points deducted for a player breach the week before. Next Saturday’s game [3pm kick off] against Cardiff will determine the semi-final format. A win will see them play Shortland in the qualifying semi-final, while a loss will see them face Paterson River in an elimination match. The “Hawks Nest Golf Club” Lady Hawks game against Newcastle University was “washed out”. The lady hawks remain in 3rd place, and will play Newcastle University in an qualifying semi-final on Saturday week.
