Bring your Guitar along: Historical Alderley Creek

IF you are looking for something to do with the family, to get out and experience you can do this right in your own backyard -Well, not far. Travel up the Buckett’s Way to picturesque Stroud, and pay a visit to the Historic winery and homestead Alderley Station. Alderley is a historic property originally owned by the AACo (Australian Agricultural Company) in 1830. Alderley house was built by convicts in 1831 and was built to house the convict farrier Francis McNally and his family. Alderley Station, as she was originally known, was a Waler horse (War Horse) stud farm.

Alderley creek happy hour and muso’s open mic night is a lovely experience.

WEEKLY

Last week a bunch of admiring onlookers gathered on the Hawks Nest side of the Singing Bridge to watch a member of the local Royal family cross

the road. “Princess” is a koala well known to local wildlife carers and koala enthusiasts.

She is roughly ten years old and has a joey every second year and these days is most often seen around the Binda Street area.

Last Tuesday she made the risky decision to try and cross Kingfisher CONTINUED Page 3

A YEAR of creativity was on display in Tea Gardens last weekend at the annual Myall Community Arts and Craft Sale. From stunning works done purely by putting pencil to paper, through to complicated woodwork designs, landscape paintings and contemporary works, this was a show for all tastes. “The men’s team did all the heavy lifting, we’ve probably cycled around 150 members working in teams to put the show together,” President Sue Rappell told News Of The Area. It takes six months of planning and hundreds of creative hours to fill the three rooms and the store with works that are all unique. ‘’There’s a lot of

talent in this town,” said Joan Wilcox, one of the founding members of the Community Arts and Craft Centre. Eighty-six-year-old Joan was one of the four women who started the group in humble beginnings in a hut on the Hawks Nest Golf Course more than 25 years ago. “This is a self-help group,” Joan said. “I run the art class, I’m not a teacher but I help out if I can when people want to know how to do this or the other.” “It’s the same with all the classes, whoever is there will help the others or the newcomer.” A major factor to the group’s longevity and growth is the camaraderie and collaboration that comes from being one of the 240 members of the Arts and

Craft Community. “It keeps us all out of mischief,” said Desley Voigt, a member for 15 years. Desley is part of the mosaics team along with Kerry Faber, Cherry Hughes and Gwenda Collins. The group meets on a Friday for six hours, some members coming from as far away as Lake Macquarie. “A couple comes up from Gwandalan, and a regular member comes from Bulahdelah and Medowie,” Gwenda said. And there’s no age barrier to joining a group. “We even had a nineyear-old boy for a while,” Desley said. “A Karuah primary school group came to learn how to do the basics of mosaics and created an Aboriginal design for

their school,” Gwenda said. The Arts and Craft Community Centre is also a family affair, Joan Wilcox’s sister, Norma Seggie, is part of the team who volunteers to keep the shop open seven days a week.” With a duster in hand, Norma is constantly on the move. “We all help each other,” Norma said. As a not-for-profit organisation, the Centre will also donate to local charities and community organisations from proceeds made from the three day sale. There’s no time to rest either, as planning and preparations are now underway for their Easter show, where members will show off their skills in a craft demonstration day.

Avenue near the bridge. Seeing her almost hit by a car, several drivers pulled over to ensure the traffic slowed sufficiently to let her go about her business. Martin Schulz, a wildlife biologist, was among those who stopped. “Everyone was concerned for the safety of the koala,” Martin said. “She was on the ground and moving about and made several nerve-wracking attempts at crossing the road.” “People were keeping their distance and alerting the oncoming cars.” Jill Madden, President of the Myall Koala and Environment

Group, told News Of The Area, “This area is a natural corridor for koalas and a real priority for action to help save our endangered koala population.” “Only six weeks ago a mother and baby koala were killed here and near misses are not uncommon,” said Jill. ‘’I think it’s great that people stopped to help out.’’ “We have hopes for another interactive sign to warn people to slow down,’’ she added. “While I understand it can be fretful seeing people pulled over, so long as they are safely off the road I’m pleased to see visitors and locals appreciating our koalas,” Jill said. LOCALS and tourists with a thirst for knowledge streamed into the Hawks Nest Community Centre last weekend for Rotary’s massive annual book sale. More than six thousand items were up for sale, an Aladdin’s cave of treasures for lovers of books. Rotary Committee Member Ray Harrison, one of the major organisers, has been helping put the sale together for the past seven years. At age 88 Ray has been a member of Apex and Rotary for 70 years. “I’ve been lucky,” he said with a laugh. “My father joined Rotary in 1929, he was very active member.” Organising the book sale is very much a year-long affair, with 25 volunteers needed in the final stages, to help with the set up and keep the wheels turning.

“The Surf Life Savers also help out with the heavy lifting,” Ray told News Of The Area. The McCann family from Dapto, south of Sydney, were early visitors to the hall last Friday and thrilled to pick up plenty of books to keep everyone busy reading. “You’ve got to love a good book,” said mum Natalie. The McCanns were first time visitors to the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens area and thoroughly enjoyed their week long stay at Myall Shores. Over the next week, Rotary officials will take stock; any book deemed to have been around for too long will be taken to the tip. Decisions will also be made in regards to the distribution of money raised. One thing is certain however, that the beneficiaries of all Rotary’s hard work will be the local Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest community.

MYALL RIVER: Dredging for the sand stockpile.

IF you believe that dredging is the way to go to keep the Lower Myall River system in excellent health then you’ll be very disappointed in the State Government’s latest stand on the issue. NSW Minister for Primary Industry, Lands and Water, Niall Blair says any dredging of the Myall River to improve boating access rests with the MidCoast Council. In a letter to the member for Myall Lakes, Minister Stephen Bromhead said, “There is a strong demand for dredging across the State to improve navigational and environmental health. “While State Government funding is available it is allocated on a priority basis,” Mr Blair said. Further, “Under the current program, Myall

River is considered a local waterway and responsibility for dredging to improve boating access rests with MidCoast Council,” Mr Blair said. At a recent community meeting in Hawks Nest, Executives with MidCoast Council made it very clear there would be no further dredging of the Eastern Channel for at least six to seven years. The Myall River Action Group (MRAG) is calling on the community to lobby MidCoast Council and the Department of Industry, Lands and Water to re classify the Eastern Channel or so called Short Cut. Spokesman for the MRAG Mr Gordon Grainger says the current navigational channel is man-made and false. “Eventually Mother Nature will achieve her attempts at reforming the

natural channel, she just needs a little help from us.” ‘’The dredging conducted last October has changed the river complexion, brought it back to what it was.” “What we wish to achieve is for Lands to consider the eastern channel as a necessary channel in supporting the future of our community.’’ “We are aware that MidCoast Council is cash strapped and left to their demands we will come well down the list. “Their obligation is to maintain sand replenishment on Jimmies Beach, the Eastern Channel as a sand source, however we have no guarantee of dredging maintenance as does Swansea.’’ “We need to have the same attention as does the Swansea channel.”

Dr Hudson Reminds Locals To Keep Pets Cool HUMANS are not alone in needing relief from the heat during our hottest months. While we often indulge in ice-creams, swims at the beach, and escaping to the cool air of shopping centres; our pets also need reprieve from the heat. Noah’s Ark Vet, Dr Donald Hudson, spoke to News Of The Area about what pet owners can do to cool down their pets. “Dogs cool themselves by panting, so they can cool by licking things with their tongues.” “Keeping up fresh, cool water is essential.”

“Ice and food frozen in ice is also a good way to keep the heat down.” “Making sure animals can always get access to shade is really important.” During the summertime, when there are many parties, dogs are particularly sensitive to the noise and susceptible to harm. Dr Hudson also said, “With all the fireworks and parties at the moment, if locals are out driving at night, please be careful as there are many dogs wandering the streets who are scared and break loose from their yard.” With that in mind, Dr Hudson also said, “If you are

going out, make sure your dog is secure and safe in the yard at night.” “Dogs getting out at night due to loud noises are a danger to themselves and drivers if they were to be accidently run over.” The RSPCA reminds pet owners not to leave dogs locked in the car as this poses a very real threat to the animal’s life. It is not only cruel, but it is also a criminal offence with a $5500 fine and up to 6 months’ jail as a penalty, and these penalties increase dramatically if the dog dies as a result of being left in the car.

Heros Beach at North Arm Cove.

By Rachael VAUGHAN WITH the beautiful summer days we are experiencing, why not pack the kids in the car and explore some areas you might not have visited, despite them being on our doorstep. News Of The Area is sharing a few of our favourites with you, and we encourage you to jump online and leave a comment either on our webpage or Facebook, and tell us about your own favourite spots. If you enjoy a spot of fishing, or even just a yummy lunch of Fish and Chips that someone else caught, then the foreshore at Karuah is the place to stop for you. Since the bypass was completed, Karuah has thrived and developed its own lovely sense of identity, and is a lovely spot for families taking a simple lunch

and swim break, or even a stay in one of the motels or van park to take an extended break. Grab the family fish and chips from town, head down to the swimming tidal pool next to the bridge where the children can take a safe swim, and go for a walk along the waterfront or jetty, then play in the adjacent park. Next on our list is the hamlet of North Arm Cove, located twelve kilometres north of Karuah up the Pacific Highway. The little village does not have shops of its own, but it is worthwhile packing a picnic lunch and exploring the picturesque little settlement. Follow the signs to Heros Beach in North Arm Cove, and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and safe shallow swimming cove for the children. Continue on up the

New Look Chamber of Commerce By Margie TIERNEY

THE Myall Chamber of Commerce and Tourism kicks off 2017 with a new look team. Jessica Harris from Lazy Paddles takes over from Mark McCormack as President. Jessica with husband Darren and young daughter Isla moved from Sydney a few years back in

what could only be described as a total sea change. The couple left behind stressful jobs, Jessica as a cancer research doctor, Darren an IT specialist, opting for a beautiful place to live and work. Glenda Reid, owner of the Tea Gardens Ice Cream Shack is the new Secretary. Glenda previously worked

as a registered nurse and midwife, before taking over the “Shack” last year because retirement was just too boring. “I’ve always loved the Ice Cream Shack, it’s just a new phase of my life.” Glenda, now works most days of the week but says she couldn’t do it without her offsiders Bec and Les and the 22

casual staff she employs. She’s also passionate about her community, and an active sponsor of the local junior football teams and Nippers. “It’s all about the kids,” Glenda said. The new Chamber team is ready and set for a productive and busy year ahead for the area.

POP UP COFFEE VAN: Owner Sally Griffith & Dad Max Mahony.

By Margie TIERNEY POP UP! They’ve been around in the cities and major centres for more than a decade. For those who are not familiar with the concept, a Pop Up is a retail store, food or shopping experience that is here one minute and gone the next. Sally Griffith has taken advantage of the pop up idea and brought her coffee van to Hawks Nest for the holiday period. With space and power available through the vacant store on the corner of Tuloa and Booner Street, Sally

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

rented the space through an on-line events site. “We are actually from the Central Coast, so we come up here every day and it’s been very beneficial,” Sally told News Of The Area. Sally added with a smile, “We’ve been saving lives, saving marriages, saving children.” “We started the day after Boxing Day and we’re here to the 20th January.” Dad, Max Mahony, helps out with the heavy work, and is very proud of his resourceful daughter. “For a one-man band, she’s doing very well.” “Every person we’ve met,

from locals to other retailers and holidaymakers, they’ve all been very positive,” Max said. Sally started her business from scratch 18 months ago, buying the van and fitting it out. But she’s no stranger to hospitality having worked in the trade for 20 years. The ‘Pop Up’ experiment in Hawks Nest has proved so successful, Sally and her ‘Good Morning Sunshine’ Coffee Van will be back with their caffeine hit for the locals and tourists through the Easter Holidays.

Volunteer Generosity Appreciated OPINION Dear News Of The Area, Once again, Sue and Joe Douglas and their band of volunteers, managed to put on a wonderful Christmas luncheon for those in the district who do not have family to spend the day with. They gave up their day to provide a few hours of fun and companionship and for that we are truly grateful. We know that Sue and Joe were to travel to Sydney after the event and this makes it all the more special for us. What with all the shopping, wrapping of gifts and baskets as well as the meal preparation, this must have made the couple of days that followed very tiring for them. From all of us at the luncheon, many thanks again for an enjoyable meal and all the gifts everyone went

home with. By the look of all the presents that were in the hall, the business people of the district were very generous as well as the monetary donations that were given toward the cost of the day. If those of us who went home with a hamper don’t want to keep the basket, Sue would love to have them given back to her to use again next Christmas as this lessens the cost of buying them. Only one person went home with a red face as when she was walking out to go home, who lost their half-slip around her feet when the elastic broke? Margaret McClaren and Shirley Simpson Tea Gardens

Holiday Inspiration OPINION

Dear News Of The Area, I'm on holidays at Hawks Nest and just read your newspaper. I've holidayed here for more than 40 years and lived here during the 80s. I wrote this poem a few weeks ago in anticipation of visiting the beautiful beaches of Hawks Nest again. Julie Scott

The Beach When the sun starts to bite And the cicadas screech Time to pack the car and head to the beach. It's not very far that You have to drive To a place you can relax, Swim, surf, or dive. Just the sight of the ocean Makes you feel unstressed And with so many choices we are truly blessed. The ultramarine sky

And clear water below. The sand on the shore Almost as white as snow . Sea breeze blows gently, Waves licking your toes, Gulls winging above And salt air in your nose. Sounds of kids laughing As they fill up their pails Dogs chasing balls And wagging their tails Lay on your towel And read a good book Or throw in a line And see what you hook. Paddle out a board And catch a nice wave Or maybe do nothing If that's what you crave. The beach offers salvation From the teaming rat race It's a place to unwind And reset the pace. It cleanses your body And heals your soul When everyday living Has taken its toll. When you feel like peace Is out of your reach Pack up the car And head to the beach.

Helpful Love By Rachael VAUGHAN WHEN Mother of two, Kim Oakhill, experienced the loss of a friend’s child in 2014, she wanted to do more for the family than just send flowers. “Flowers are a lovely gesture, but not particularly helpful. I searched everywhere for something that was a bit different. Something useful or helpful. Something that said , I am so sorry. I could never imagine in a million years what you’re going through, but here’s a little something that may help you through this unimaginable time in your life.” Kim started bouncing the idea of an online community of local service providers who provide helpful and/or unique services, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

She had a vision of an online community of vendors who wanted to genuinely make a difference. And so, the Helpful Love movement was created. Helpful love is growing by the day with current vendors offering domestic cleaning, lawn mowing, remedial massage, fruit and vegetable deliveries, personal styling, spiritual healing, hair and makeup, mobile mechanic services, family photography sessions and even private lounge room concerts. It is a perfect solution for those looking for a helpful, practical gift during tough times, or even happy times – like a new baby, an engagement gift, a birthday present for those who could use some help. OPINION

Dear News Of The Area, I refer to the article "Give Little Terns some big Space this summer" on December 29, 2016. A Council spokesperson says it is not unknown for Little Terns to nest on dredge spoil. He is most certainly correct. They love sandy sites near river mouths whether they be natural or man-made. The fact the terns are breeding there and council is helping protect them initially sounds very rosy. But this essentially means the stockpile cannot be touched during breeding time. That is from approximately September to January. Under Federal and State Laws it is illegal to disturb this species while breeding. Therefore if we have a storm in that period, where, Council, will you get your life saving sand for the Boulevarde? All other sand source is exhausted. Maybe start digging up our parks? The fact that all three levels of government failed to foresee this major hiccup in the planning process shows yet again how completely out of touch they are with managing the Boulevarde. Meanwhile, the four-month-old giant hale bales are already fast decaying. How frustrating it is for so many locals who have invested fruitless time and energy over the years into trying to reach a commonsense solution to this erosion problem. Only Council thinks we are fools not to be listened to. Us the fools? Christian Patteson, Hawks Nest

Game On Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS

FIRST day back at bowls, after the Christmas break was Tuesday 3 January. Obviously we had all missed playing our bowls as there was a good turn up of ladies. Thankfully, weather wise, it was not too hot to enjoy a game of bowls. Social games only, format triples. The winners with the lowest margin were Lynda Richards, Bev Stephens and Deyonne Page. It was great to see that Bev Stephens had not lost any of her bowling skills despite the fact that she hadn't bowled for a number of weeks. All members were delighted to see her back in action. Birthday greetings for Francis Betar and Jan Kuzmic and welcome to our newest member Bev Dunn. Bev has joined as a sports member

of the Women's Bowling Club, allowing her to participate in all social games and waivers the fee for "roll ups". Becoming a sports member is a good idea for new bowlers or those who do not want to participate in Club Championships or District Competition. The cost for this membership is $40 per annum. Unfortunately rain dampened our day of bowls on Thursday 5. We only managed to play seven ends when play was called off. A card was drawn at random to determine the winners who were Ingrid Luck, Karen Mcphie, Lily Smith and Lorraine Harvey. The Club Fours Championship commences on Tuesday 10 January. There are eight teams entered, winners move on to the next round which will be held on Thursday 12. Good luck to all players. Social bowls as usual for those not entered in the competition.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA HAPPY New Year to all our bowlers! The new year will see a complete refurbishment of the grass green. Work commenced prior to the Christmas break and proceeded early this month when a workingbee of members assisted the greenkeepers in laying the “runners” for the new surface. Our thanks to them! The green will be out of service for some weeks but the wait will be worth the effort with the green being re-levelled and the grass type changed. 6 January The fabulous

Jackpot Pairs resumed today with 30 bowlers playing in bright sunny and warm conditions, tempered by a very welcome sea breeze. It was great to see the green filled with bowlers with six rinks of pairs and one game of triples. The scoring system chosen for the day was four points for a win and one point for each end won. It was one-way traffic for the two winning teams with the winners only conceding three ends and the runners-up yielding only five. The winners were the dynamic duo of Kerry Faber and Bill Heylbut on +19 and the runners-up, Robyn Beaumont and Merv Mills on +17. Although seven teams had a chance to win the jackpot of $240.00, the winning number was not drawn.

Next week it would be good to see the numbers increased for the Friday Jackpot Pairs where players will be competing for $260.00. In other news The first rounds of the Club Championship Fours will be played next Saturday and Sunday, 14, 15 January with 11 teams competing. Preliminary teams have been posted for the 2017 Mid-Week and Saturday Pennant competitions commencing late next month. A number of trial games have been organised by the Selectors and all players who nominated for Pennant selection are encouraged to attend. Sunday Bowls is set to return on Sunday 22 January.
