visitors, Tea Gardens student Simone Miller was impressed with the creative talents on show. “All of the hats were really high quality, I think they are all winners,” Simone said. Bulahdelah student Annabelle Smith told News Of The Area, “the hats were amazing”. “There were so many and they all looked pretty and very colourful,” she said. Although hat parades are always a highlight of the school calendar, the occasion was extra special for Tea Gardens coordinating teacher, Ms

Maloney. “This was one of her last official roles as Assistant Principal before retiring after 39 years of dedicated service as a class teacher,” Principal Mr Mark Clemson said. After a lot of eggcellent fun, staff at Karuah and Tea Gardens Public Schools and Bulahdelah Central School, thanked all the children and parents for their hard work in creating the impressive Easter hats. The schools also wish their students, parents and communities a safe and happy Easter holiday break.

RFS Volunteers do great work LOCAL Rural Fire Service (RFS) and State Emergency Service (SES) members have been praised for their involvement in the clean-up of Lismore after the area was devastated by flooding. Speaking in Parliament last week, Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead, acknowledged the volunteer members from Pindimar, Limeburners Creek and Booral RFS, and also those from his electorate, who provided assistance “in an area that was described as looking like a war zone”. “We take our hats off to volunteers and their families. At times like this, volunteers put up their hand to help and advance towards danger while the rest of us retreat from it,” Mr Bromhead said. “The volunteers have the support of their families and their employers, who allow them to go. I congratulate them all.” Mr Bromhead said the MidCoast region’s RFS provided 42 people, 10 tankers, a bulk water tanker and two command vehicles to assist in the clean-up efforts.

The Full Court of the Family Court has overturned an order requiring the mother to live with the children within an 80km radius of a particular town.

The Full Court determined that the trial Judge was in error in using his discretion in making the coercive order and that the Court’s power to make such an order should only be exercised in rare and extreme circumstances. The Full Court found that the trial Judge erred in failing to explore and consider alternative options to the coercive order, and that he had not considered the risk to the children if they moved back to the town – due to the emotional support that the mother had been afforded by moving away from there.

The matter was reconsidered and the coercive order was removed.

DURING a search of the local area earlier this week, dozens of foil wrapped chocolate eggs, allegedly left by the Easter Bunny, were discovered. Witnesses have stated the fluffy bunny has long floppy ears, and is hopping around with huge baskets of eggs. Evidence uncovered during the investigation confirms that the Easter Bunny is nearby and is preparing to deliver the chocolate treats to wellbehaved boys and girls. But with the Easter Bunny out and about, our local boys in blue urge anyone who is travelling, to slow down and be patient on the roads. “Police understand that the Easter long weekend is

Servo Fueling Competition A NEW player in local retail petrol ranks has brought some of the lowest fuel prices the region has seen in years. United Bulahdelah opened its 24-hour a day site last week, with E10 Unleaded selling for less than $1.10 per litre. United spokesperson Andrew English said the low fuel prices are set to continue. “The price is significantly under what people in the region are used to paying, and we will hold it for a few more weeks to give people the opportunity to see the new site,” he said. “Majors have been operating for a long time, and our strategy is to bring competition to the area and bring fuel prices down.” According to the NRMA’s Bowser Buster Report, prices for regular unleaded petrol

on the Mid North Coast last week ranged from $1.31 per litre at Port Macquarie up to $1.37 per litre at Bulahdelah. The same report showed the cheapest regular unleaded petrol in NSW was available in Sydney for $1.12 per litre. Bulahdelah was ranked the fifth most expensive of the 57 regular unleaded locations monitored by Bowser Buster. Mr English said United’s ongoing strategy would “bring a better deal” and “keep prices low”. “People have been paying too much for too long,” he said. “We are going to continue with our aggressive pricing strategy and maintain our position on providing the best priced fuel in the region.” In addition to a wide range of fuels, United Bulahdelah

Welcome Sign for the Myall By Margie TIERNEY

PATIENCE and persistence have finally paid off for the Myall Coast Rotary Club in its quest for a ‘Welcome’ Gateway sign at the highway turnoff to Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. The Club has just received a NSW Government Tourism grant to fund the project. “Since the modified turnoff was installed during the construction of the dual carriageway, what should have been an attractive ‘Gateway’ to our Myall Coast, has been sadly neglected,” Rotary’s Ian MackenzieSmith said. “Some five years ago, the Rotary Club decided

to pursue a program of enhancement for the turnoff area and after several different concepts, settled on one that will provide a striking ‘Welcome’ to our holiday visitors.” “With the grant in place and all the relevant approvals received from local and State authorities, ‘The Gateway Project’ can now proceed.” Rotary members have held extensive discussions and negotiations with MidCoast Council, Roads and Maritime Services, Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism and Council’s Tourism Department. Watch this space for more details about the sign and its progress.

q Community Of Christ Evangelist Frank Flood, Myall Coast Catholic Parish Pastoral Coordinator Sister Libbey Byrne and Anglican Rev Denis Kirkaldy. By John SAHYOUN WITH so much commercialism surrounding Easter in this day and age, for many children, the holiday is all about the Easter Bunny and hunting for eggs. But the real significance of the celebration is about new life, new beginnings, love and

hope. “It’s about Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection,” Myall Coast Catholic Parish Pastoral Coordinator Sister Libbey Byrnes said. “All of us today should keep our lives as a memory of Jesus and to do the things he did, like treat people well, be kind and fight for justice for

those who are downtrodden.” Anglican Rev Denis Kirkaldy, said Easter is also an opportunity to share a hope for the future. “Without Easter and without Jesus, there would be no future,” Rev Kirkaldy said. “I would like to see families come together and think about the Easter message, it is a good

time to stop and pause and think about its meaning.” To share the spirit of the Easter period, Myall Coast congregations of all denominations, gathered in the grounds of St Brigid’s Bulahdelah last Sunday, to follow the Stations of the Cross. “The significance of the Stations of the Cross is to remember Jesus’ last journey in Jerusalem on to the cross of Calvary where he was crucified,” Sister Byrnes said. Community Of Christ Evangelist Frank Flood, encourages us all to remember the hope that Jesus offered for the future. “I wish that we could regard every day as Easter, because Easter gives us newness of life in Christ,” he said. “If we could have a new start every day, this would be a much better world.” The combined churches invite all residents and visitors to share in the spirit of Easter by attending any of the services which will be held throughout the region over the Easter weekend. “It’s a time of new life, a new beginning and hope,” Rev Kirkaldy said.

The Case of the Mystery Treasure By Margie TIERNEY PLENTY to do this Easter Holiday weekend in Tea Gardens, especially if you love a Trash and Treasure or a Monster Garage Sale or two. The Clubhouse Auditorium of The Grange Lifestyle Resort will be full to overflowing with treasures on Easter Saturday. Organisers would also like to solve ‘The Case of the Mystery Buyer’. “We have a saucer from a Royal Doulton Coffee Can that was sold here last year,” organiser Joanna Duffy told News Of The Area. “When we were packing up last year we found the saucer, so someone has the Coffee Can (small coffee cup) and we’d like to make their set complete, it’s here waiting for them,” Joanna said. The event attracts plenty of stall holders and this year, organisers from the RSL Retirement village will also man a number of tables to raise money for the local Westpac Rescue Helicopter

“IT’S all about Seniors having fun.” Those six words, from local Anne Rutter, summed up the mood at last weekend’s Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras in Hawks Nest. Anne and Sonja Ridden certainly turned heads with their colourful costumes at Saturday’s free community event in the Mall on Yamba Street. “There’s still a bit of

misconception about what it is,” Sonja said. What it was, for the second year running, was a great success. The three day event had something for everyone and catered to all ages. After a few early morning showers on Friday, the sun shone down on the 84 golfers who had a great day out on the links in the Grey Nomads Cup. Friday night was movie night and the classic African Queen was washed down with wine tasting and fish and chips. Then Saturday dawned bright and sunny, perfect

weather for the free street entertainment. There were lots of community stalls and plenty to keep the crowds enthralled from pipe and drums to rock’n’roll, ukulele players and line dancers. Some spectators said they came for just a little while and ended up staying for hours. Saturday night was a sell out with more than 150 people enjoying the dinner dance at the Hawks Nest Golf Club. Sunday, ‘Finding Dory’ and the ‘Baby Boomers Show’ certainly were a blast from the past and a huge hit.

q MARDI GRAS COMMITTEE: Mark McCormack, Trevor Jennings, Leon Bobako, Sonja Ridden & Kerry Jennings. The Grey and Thespian Committee was thrilled with the overall turnout, testament to their months of hard work behind the scenes

to ensure the Mardi Gras will become a permanent feature on the Hawks Nest Entertainment Calendar.

A JOINT partnership led by Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club, and supported by Hunter Surf Life Saving and MidCoast Council, will see a major upgrade to the Surf Club building, public amenities and the surrounding precinct, with the 12 month project to commence soon. Surf Club president, Steve Howell is now putting out the call for community assistance with the build. "Tea Gardens Hawks Nest SLSC has served the community loyally for 86 years, it is our turn to ask for help. Donations or discounted building supplies in particular would be appreciated to complete this project and fit

out the new Club house." With a total project cost of $750,000, TGHN SLSC secured most of the funding for this project through NSW Government grants, local businesses and community organisation donations. MidCoast Council will be contributing in excess of $100,000 worth of financial and capital works assistance as well as supporting the Surf Club with their management of the venture. A project timeline has been drafted allowing for staged improvements to the Surf Club, including replacement of the existing roof and external shell, the provision of an improved training room

Working alongside the club contractors, MidCoast Council will be enhancing the precinct by upgrading the public amenities, including the installation of an accessibility toilet - the first for this location. Council will also extend the existing first aid and lifesaving storage shed by providing room for members' toilet and shower facilities. This will allow lifesaving club members access to their own amenities, even if the clubhouse is closed. Everything Old is New Again THE Karuah Anglican Op Shop and Church Hall is being refurbished. The shop has now completed its move up the street to a temporary location at 412 Tarean Road into the old Antiques Shop. Christine Mason, a long term Op Shop worker, said, “With a lot of sweat and effort, the best quality and new stock has been moved up to the new shop, which will be open on Wednesday

mornings, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday mornings.” The old building has now been cleared and the fences that denote a construction site go up this weekend, signalling the start of the refurbishment project. The Church Hall will be extended and modernised while some old building materials and the entire roof will be replaced. Cliff Johnson, the project

leader, said “While the refurbishment will improve the functionality and space in the Op Shop, it will also provide a meeting room and social areas for the growing St Columba’s congregation.” The Op Shop will continue to trade throughout the period of the refurbishment from the new location. Those wanting to make donations can continue to do that via the usual donation bins, which have not been moved. Christine Mason said, “The move has allowed us to revitalise the holding of clothes, books, toys, kitchen

that movies are capable of distorting the true history to such a degree they sometimes offended countries with their historical inaccuracies and were banned from showing in those countries. Movies often used subliminal (and blatant) messages to convey political

and ideological doctrines; for example take Cecil B DeMille’s The Ten Commandments (1956) which glorified McCarthyism, and the ‘Cold War’ with its analogy of the repressive, bullying Pharaohs as the Soviets and the brave Hebrews as the Americans. Then there is the silent movie “Birth of a Nation” hailed as a masterpiece by

Canteen Upgrade

THERE was plenty to celebrate at Karuah Public School last week, with the official re-opening of the school’s canteen on the final day of term. Assistant Principal Mrs Kath Henry, said the Department of Education had completely refurbished the interior of the facility. “There are all new fittings, flooring, bench tops and a roller door, which is all up to date with the new current standards,” she said.

To mark the occasion, Principal Mrs Julie Hubbard joined with P&C representative Mrs April Lilley, to cut the official ribbon to the new facility. Special guests, including Port Stephens MP Kate Washington, Karuah RSL Secretary/Manager Ross Parr and Coles Tea Gardens Managers, Craig and Alex, joined the celebrations. Mrs Henry said The Red Cross were also acknowledged for their

Don’t Blame MP For Rate Rise MYALL Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead has stated that he is not proposing a rate rise for MidCoast residents. “I do not have a say in whether a council raises its rates or it does not, it is a matter for MidCoast Council,” Mr Bromhead said in Parliament last week. The MP’s address was to clarify his position in relation to the Local Government Amendment (Rates – Merged Council Areas) Bill 2017, which will allow MidCoast Council to apply for a Special Rate Variation.

A proposed increase of five per cent each year over a fouryear period, was outlined by MidCoast Council at their recent round of community update sessions. “This proposal will now have to be looked at again by MidCoast Council,” Mr Bromhead said. “It will have to make an application and provide evidence to support it, to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) before any decision is made.” According to Mr Bromhead, if the rate rise goes ahead, the increase for the Manning Region will be $59 per year, which equates to $1.13 per week.

For Great Lakes, it will be $64 a year, or an average of $1.23 per week, and for Gloucester, $77 each year, or $1.48 per week. “This is not something I am proposing,” Mr Bromhead stated. “The legislation that was passed last week was unanimously supported by all members of all political persuasions, whether they be from The Nationals, the Liberal Party, Labor, The Greens, or Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party. They all voted in favour of this legislation.” Mr Bromhead said one of the benefits of the legislation is that it will allow MidCoast Council to address the almost $200 million backlog, if it chooses to apply for a Special Rate Variation.

A number of professional artists will also be on hand to

Organising such a mammoth event has been the school’s dedicated P&C. “It’s all run by volunteers,” the P&C’s Fiona Mobbs said. Since the school holidays began last week, committee members and volunteers have been working around the clock to get all 500 works of art and craft displayed to their best vantage. But Fiona says they could

still do with some help from anyone wishing to donate their time over the Easter Long Weekend. “You could help serve coffee and tea or maybe sell some raffle tickets,” Fiona said. “This event is the major P&C fundraiser for the school raising more than $10,000 annually,” Principal Mark Clemson said. Mr Marom encourages any Telstra customers experiencing issues with their landline phone to report the fault on 132203. However, many residents are fed up with the poor mobile phone reception and ongoing issues with landline and ADSL services in the area. Local resident Steve Locke said they simply want fair and equitable access to telecommunication services. “Small communities such as Bulahdelah should be afforded the same level of service as larger areas,” he said. These concerns are echoed by The Regional, Rural and Remote Communications Coalition. Members of the group converged on Canberra’s Parliament House last week, with the message that everyone should have access to affordable, reliable internet

and voice services, regardless of where they live. The delegation highlighted that regional, rural and remote consumers struggle to run their businesses and complete daily online tasks due to unreliable services. The coalition is made up of 17 diverse organisations from across the country, including the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network. CEO Teresa Corbin, said the Coalition would continue to fight to see telecommunications in rural and remote areas improved to a standard comparable to that enjoyed by urban consumers. “We are committed to 2017 being the year better communications are delivered to the bush,” she said.

Phone Saga Continues By John SAHYOUN

AFTER more than two weeks without home phone and internet connections, the service has now been restored for some of the 120 Telstra customers affected by the recent outage in Bulahdelah. However, others have been left outraged after being told the disrupted service may continue for a few more weeks. Telstra Area General Manager Mike Marom, said the outage has been caused by a damaged cable. “We are sorry for the interruption to services. We understand the frustration this can cause and appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to fix the issue,” Mr Marom said. “We have techs onsite working to restore services as quickly as possible.”

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

I bought a $1000 Dalmatian a year ago and he was an attentive puppy, but now he is fully grown, he has been spending more time at the neighbour’s house than mine. Yesterday I found him on her balcony and he acted as though he didn’t even know who I was. I don’t know what to do. The neighbour isn’t helping matters. She just says he seems happier with her. Mrs JM, Tea Gardens Dear Mr. JM, I FEAR that your dear neighbour (I am picturing an elderly lady with a delicate cardigan and sensible shoes) is actually a sinister captor. She has been grooming Darrel the Dalmatian with pig ears and liver bites and bowls of cream since he was a pup. The minute you turn your head, she tempts him to cross over to the dark side. She is the one who showed him the hole in the camellia bush that is now an escape tunnel. She also taught him to bark incessantly whenever you try to watch the tennis. Now the poor dog is a hostage and, worse, he has formed a damaging psychological attachment to the woman, that menacing wolf in sheep’s clothing and orthopaedic shoes. Poor Darrel has Stockholm Syndrome and I fear that your only solution is to kidnap him back and then take him on a long drive to Byron Bay. The two of you can book into some therapy and doggie yoga (which they are sure to have in Byron). I’m guessing if you can afford a $1000 pet, you’re not short of a quid. Let me know how it goes, BM. I’m here for you. Carpe diem, Jasminda

WELL, thanks Stephen for for representing the community in such a caring way. I do not recall, we, the residents of Great Lakes area being consulted about any proposed increase in the Special Rate Variation recently, and to presume that, we won’t suffer any adverse effects of an increase in our land rates is a bit rich. Mid Coast Council (MCC) started to conduct a survey ,but, the results of the survey, to my knowledge were never

revealed as they realised the 2016 Act prevented them from seeking an increase. No doubt the result would have concluded the usual, that the ‘residents don’t mind paying increased rates as long as they have improved services’. Then, MCC miraculously discovered all these savings and indicated, that, an increase would not be necessary. The 2016 Act, prevented merged councils seeking a rate increase for 4 years. This was passed by the NSW Liberal State Government in 2016. This

meant that the 20 merged council’s would not be allowed to seek a rate increase for 4 years. The current rates charged by Mid Coast Council (MCC) are outrageous enough and are rated close to the highest in the state. It appears however, Stephen Bromhead (Member for Myall Lakes), has taken it upon himself to have this Act changed, to omit MCC from the Act, so that, MCC can increase their rates. All other mergers will come under the Act, and not be allowed to seek a rate increase beyond the rate peg limit, but, not

Enterprise Tax Plan Dear News Of The Area,

SMALL and medium sized businesses on the coast will receive tax cuts so they can grow their company and employ more people as part of the Federal Coalition government’s visionary Enterprise Tax Plan. These historic cuts will give many local businesses, like the local butcher, local newsagent and local pub to keep more of the money they have earnt to invest and grow their business so they can employ more local people. Nationally, these tax cuts will put $5.2 billion back into the hands of small and medium sized businesses to expand on their hard work. Once the Enterprise

Tax Plan is fully delivered, it will permanently increase the size of the economy by 1.2 per cent of GDP – that’s more than $17 billion in today’s dollars every single year. More than 3.2 million small and medium sized businesses employing 6.5 million people across the nation will benefit from cutting the tax rate. That is more than half of the Australian workforce. The Coalition Government is also pleased to confirm we have delivered on all the tax cuts which were promised during this term of government – inside the first year of the term. Passing these cuts is critical to growing the national economy because seven out of eight people are employed

MCC. How presumptuous to assume that the residents, mostly retirees on limited incomes, would suffer “no adverse effects”. You are supposed to be representing your constituents in the Myall Lakes State Electorate in a favourable manner, not representing Local Government and determining that ‘we don’t mind paying more in rates ,as long as we have improved services’. John Alterator, Hawks Nest

OPINION

by private enterprise. Small and medium sized businesses with a turnover of up to $50 million will benefit from the tax cut while the Coalition government remains committed to passing the entire 10-year Enterprise Tax Plan because we know it will grow the economy, increase investment and create more jobs. That ultimately puts more money in the pockets of Australian workers. In contrast, Bill Shorten has no plan for job creation and no plan for growing the economy. In fact, his frontbench cannot name one single projobs, pro-growth policy they have. The Coalition government knows hard working families

who own and run their own companies are the engine room of the economy. The successful passage of these vital tax cuts for small and medium sized businesses has now left Mr Shorten with a multi-billion dollar black hole in how he will pay for his reckless spending. Mr Shorten must tell residents why he will again take higher taxes and higher deficits to the next election to make up for his unfunded “spendometer” policies. The Coalition government’s national economic plan is fully funded and will grow the economy, creating more jobs in every region. Dr David Gillespie Federal Member for Lyne

Stand Against Bullying Dear News Of The Area, THE SRC (Student Representative Council) supported the National Day Against Bullying on Friday, 17 March. By taking a stand

together, they wanted to show that bullying has no place in the school or within the wider community. Our Year 11 SRC member, Paris Battle, talked about different types of bullying including name

News Of The Area

PJ & STIX make an impression

KARUAH Motor Yacht Club (KMYC) hosted a professional wood chopping exhibition on Saturday 8 April as practice run for the Lost Highway Blues Festival coming up in May as well as an early Easter celebration for its members and guests.

Wood chips were flying fast and furious, which were used later to stoke the camp fire cauldron. KMYC Commodore Ken Baker was very pleased with the event. “It’s great to see so much fun

and good times had by all.” Families enjoyed a beautiful afternoon and amazing crimson sunset on the waterfront followed by entertainment by PJ & STIX. The duo were accompanied by Robert Callinan with the

Dear News Of The Area,

I had the strangest feeling that a friend might need a hand, So we went up to Karuah to support his two man band. Karuah Roadhouse is now holding a Wednesday open mic, With Stix and PJ hosting locals to play just what they like. Beer and wine is now on sale to follow the evening meal, Accompanied by sweet music, it is a real good deal.

We arrived to see the locals clustered in a group, Seated and quietly chatting with the ukulele troupe. The show got underway and I sat there with a beer, And at the end of every song I’d let drive with a cheer. I got some funny looks from the reserved and proper crowd, It was like they hadn’t seen a show that got a little loud. A funny silent feeling fell, one of impending gloom, As in walked five rough diamonds lighting up the room. They had some makeshift instruments and were ready to rock and roll, Happy and joyful bush folk are warming to the soul. They sang and danced and cheered and yelled, they really had a time, One even played a washboard to keep the band in line. What a time we had that night with not too many locals, They were all sitting bored at home watching TV yokels. They could enjoy a beer or two and a happy music show, On Wednesday night at Karuah Roadhouse, it is the place to go. Bring your friends and enjoy the night and sing or play a song, One thing’s sure the smile you have will last the whole night long. Robert Callinan On the Washboard

Bowlers Get Lucky Karuah RSL Men’s Bowling Club By Trevor DAVIES HAVE you ever considered the effect of luck in a sporting contest? Luck – many say “you make your own luck”, but we mere mortals know that luck can and often does play a role in sporting competitions. Now, I am not referring here to the “bad luck” that sees a referee give 15 penalties to 2 against your team at the footy. I mean the type of luck that a sports person has that allows the ball to bounce into their hands just before they score, rather than away from their hands so that they

knock it on! The other thing that sporting people know at almost a “primitive level” is that on any given day, they can perform better, or worse, at their sport than normal. Some days you play above yourself and some days, you just don’t. Nothing goes right and you don’t do things as well as you might on any other day. These two variables, luck and performance, can and do affect, amongst other sports, those of us who play Lawn Bowls. Every lawn bowler has a personal level of capability. Most of us, hopefully, are on a journey from where we start the sport, to whatever level we will eventually reach.

At what ever level of capability you may be at, if you are having a good performance day or a bad performance day and if you are having a good luck day or a bad luck day, it will influence how you go. What’s that I hear you say? If I am having a lucky day, then I will also be performing above my normal standards! Oh no you don’t, see that’s where the irony of sport reaches out and either kisses you on the forehead or bites you on the bum! Let’s look at an example all bowlers know. At its simplest, in lawn bowls, you are trying to get your bowl as close as possible

There was one game of Club Championship Pairs played today with the team of Scott Beaumont and Greg Pearson winning the last end to defeat the gallant Steve Jones and Paul Syron by three shots. The game was locked on 20-20 with one end to play. 8 April Saturday pennants dominated proceedings today with the Mighty Dolphins Grade 5 and Grade 6 sides playing at home against Lemon Tree Passage and Hamilton North respectively. With the home ground advantage both Grade 5 and Grade 6 won their matches. In Grade 5 it was a close call with two teams losing but riding home on the coattails of a very dominant performance from the Keith Smith Four who won 30-14. The Merv Mills team lost 15-22, whilst the Bill Thrift

team lost 13-19. The final score Tea Gardens 58, Lemon Tree Passage 55. The Grade 6 win was more conclusive with a great performance from the Ron Webster four who dominated their match 35-9. Doug Naylor’s team managed a close win 22-18 and the Danny Johnson team were way off song to go down 14-28. The final score, Tea Gardens 71, Hamilton North 55. The Mighty Dolphins Grade 3 side had their first loss of the season taking a pasting on the dead slow, (10 sec.), grass at Cardiff. Both the Jeff Baker and Richard Lee teams went down 11-21, whilst the Sean Mearrick team lost 18-24. Cardiff won 66-40. 9 April Sunday Bowls attracted

BOWLING to the jack (the little white ball). On a good day your bowl may even just touch the jack (achieving the ultimate “a toucher”). On a good but unlucky day, you may do that but the jack may bounce off your bowl and sit up against your opponent’s closest bowl giving them the shot. On a bad performance day, you may miss the jack by two metres and be short, but as it’s also a lucky day, your opponent then also bowls a bad bowl which hits your bowl knocking it up so it sits right next to the jack. Yes, it can and does happen, but only on lucky days.

So, lucky or unlucky and above or below standard performance. All of these things can affect how you bowl on any given day. While these variables can improve or degrade your results by say 10%, in a field where most competitive bowlers only vary in capability by at the most 25%, if you are having a good/ lucky day and your opponent isn’t, you can compete against anyone. The luckiest thing that you can do is take up Lawn Bowling. The earlier you start that journey, the better you will get at the sport. On a good/lucky day you could be a world beater. The first step would be to come along to the Karuah

5 April A maximum field of 7 rinks contested Wednesday Triples today over 14 ends. The winners on a commendable score of +31 and conceding only 3 ends, were Lance Atkins, Bruce Everitt and Pip Sullivan. Taking second prize money was the team of John Slater, George Winter and Neville Vaughn. 7 April Players on Pennant duty and those contesting the Club Championship Pairs depleted the field for the Fabulous Friday Jackpot Pairs however, 12 hardy souls competed among themselves for no prize money. Hopefully there will be a few more players next week.

Roos and Raiders showground was too wet to play on. Game Day Sponsors were the Hunter Quarries and Inspired Aromas. Due to work and injuries, the Roos bench was very thin with only 15 players to take on a full side

of Raiders. The Roos kicked off, with the Raiders running hard and straight it wasn’t long before they were over the line to put the first points on the board 4/0. The Roos newcomers put on same big hits by Adam Crampton, Matt Feeney and Ben Feeney. Great metres were made by Luke Perry, Nathan Ritzau, Tim Johnson, Sam Croese, Jack Croese, Zac Cobb, Nick Borham and Ben Feeney.

And eventually, perhaps, the Commonwealth Games. Like all of the rest of us Lawn Bowlers, you too will live for the “good/lucky days” and on those days when it does goes badly, just blame the bad/unlucky day you are having. We all just do our best to bowl as well as we can and up to our own standard. You will forever bless the lucky day you first took up bowling. See you at Karuah.

Pennant Season Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 4 April: Very strong south to south easterly winds proved a challenge for most bowlers today, but everyone was happy just to be out playing a game of bowls finally. Two bowls “turnaround triples” was the format for play. Great fun, the lead finally getting an opportunity to play skip and given the chance to tell the skip where to place the mat, where to send the jack to, which hand to play. Then the lead, playing

Local By John SAHYOUN THE Mid North Coast Amateur Fishing Clubs Association recently held their Estuary Titles, which were hosted locally by the Bulahdelah Fishing Club. The weekend contest attracted 80 anglers who represented clubs from throughout the region, including Bulahdelah and Port Macquarie, and everywhere in between. Despite wet conditions, a break in the weather on the Saturday, provided near perfect conditions for the friendly fish off. Association VicePresident Brett Shultz, said the competition area was open, with the only restriction being that fishing had to take place within an estuary. “We had two men from Port Macquarie fishing from a boat, who went down to

Lake Macquarie, then back to Port Macquarie and then to Forster, they hadn’t slept all night,” Brett told News Of The Area. After a weekend of serious fishing, all clubs converged on Bulahdelah Bowling Club for the weigh in. Lake Cathie club members proved hard to beat, claiming the overall win by taking out the Ladies, Ladies Veteran, Junior and Sub-Junior individual categories. Lake Cathie also dominated the team categories, out fishing the competition to take the Men’s, Ladies Veteran, Junior and Sub-Junior titles. But it wasn’t all about Lake Cathie, with other clubs also recording good catches. Port Macquarie claimed the Men’s and Open Individual titles and Harrington took out the Individual Veterans Championship.

Bulahdelah Fishing Club were named runners-up in the Men’s team event. The biggest fish caught during the competition was a 5.96-kilogram mulloway reeled in by Laurieton’s Col Trenamen. Other standout catches were Jayden Skellern’s impressive 3.4-kilogram flathead, and Daniel Manwarring’s 4.6-kilogram kingfish, both representing Port Macquarie. Host Club President Darren Carrall said the weekend event was successful with many surprise catches. “You never know what’s coming up, the kingfish caught was the standout, as it is so unusual,” he said. The next outing for the Association will be the ‘Rock and Reef’ contest hosted by the Laurieton Club, commencing on 20 May.
