Campaign makes a real difference for Women in Crisis By Margie TIERNEY TO all those who contributed to this year’s “It’s in the Bag” campaign, take a bow. “This was our third year doing the campaign and has by far been the best yet,” Organiser Jodie Genner said. For those not familiar with the campaign, “It’s in the Bag”, is an initiative of ‘Share the Dignity’ charity. Its premise is a simple one, to give a handbag full of practical personal products and special treats, to women in crisis. MIDCOAST Council has developed a new draft Market Policy to support the sustainable operation of regular markets taking place on public land. Under the Draft Policy, market operators are required to collaborate with Council, local residents, the business community and other agencies to ensure consideration is given to the physical space markets occupy and the people and businesses surrounding them. The policy relates to all regular markets being held on Council owned land, or Council controlled public land – including Farmer’s Markets. Festivals and ‘one-off’ events like fetes or markets which occur once a year are excluded. You can view the document on Council’s website and provide feedback until 2 January 2019.

Carols for Christmas By Margie TIERNEY

THE Cicadas are buzzing, the Christmas lights are blinking, and if that’s not enough to get you into the mood for the Festive Season, there’s plenty of Carols to be sung ahead of 25 December. This coming Sunday, 16 December, a Community Christmas Carols event is being held at the Tea Gardens Primary School from 6pm. It is a ticketed event with all proceeds going to the Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club. Closer to Christmas, the Baptist Church is holding its annual Family Christmas Carols on Sunday 23 December from 6.30pm. There’s also a free sausage sizzle starting at 5.30pm. “A special feature this

year, is a Nativity Interactive Display where children can dress up as shepherds, angels or sheep and be part of the Nativity,” Sue Roberts said. “The costumes are supplied and parents will need to bring a camera to take photos during the sausage sizzle.” Sue said, “All are invited to come along and join in the Carol singing.” “Glow sticks will be provided to add atmosphere particularly when “Silent Night” is sung.” “Come along and be treated to an evening of Carol singing, stories and Festive fun as we prepare for Christmas to celebrate the birth of Jesus,” Sue said. “If you can’t make it to the Carols why not pop along to one of the local Churches

MIDCOAST Council’s 201718 Financial Statements, currently on public exhibition, indicate Council is tracking well against the NSW Government’s key performance measures. According to General Manager, Adrian Panuccio, the Statements provide the community with a consolidated financial picture of the new organisation and indicate the Council is in a solid financial position as it moves into the future. “This is the first time we have been able to provide our community with our consolidated financial position and this will provide a baseline for future comparisons of financial performance,” Mr Panuccio said. MidCoast Council’s Financial Statements have

been through a detailed audit process and are now on exhibition for comment from the community. “Our financial position is scrutinised and audited externally to ensure transparency in our financial management.” Financial management is also assessed against seven key performance ratios set by the State Government for Councils, in areas such as debt service levels, operating performance, cash expenses and rates and annual charges cover. “The Statements show we met the industry financial sustainability performance benchmarks in all areas apart from our infrastructure asset performance ratios, an area we are focused on improving.” The Statements also revealed MidCoast Council

delivered over $70 million of capital works for the community during the financial year. “This financial result is evidence of our commitment to delivering services for our community,” Mr Panuccio said. MidCoast Council is responsible for the management of $2.94 billion of property, plant and infrastructure assets. The Financial Reports and Auditors Reports will be formally presented to the Councillors at the Ordinary Council meeting on 19 December. To view the Financial Statements in full, please go to www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au Comments from the public will be received up to seven days following the meeting.

Youth Gym benefits from ‘Tradies Day’ By Margie TIERNEY THEY’RE the blokes who fix your plumbing, build your houses or concrete your driveway, but last Friday, more than 60 local tradies downed tools for their annual pre-Christmas get together traditionally known as ‘Tradies Day’. They started their day, just after dawn, with a round of golf at the Hawks Nest Golf Club. A breakfast and lunch barbie followed, this year the legendary Lofty, from Lofty Cranes doing the honours, donning the apron and keeping the blokes fed. But the Tradies also use the day to raise money for local community groups, this year the Hawks Nest Boxing Gym, run for our local youngsters, benefiting from their generosity. Tea Gardens Senior Constable Rob

Still seeking feedback on office centralisation project THE final Community Information Session for MidCoast Council’s draft financing strategy for the potential relocation of Taree and Forster staff to a head office on Biripi Way, Taree, is happening today (10 December) at Bulahdelah. The Bulahdelah community expressed interest in hosting a session and it will be held at Bulahdelah School of the Arts, 76 Crawford Street, Bulahdelah, from 2pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. Council would like to thank everyone who has attended the sessions. Anyone wishing to find out more about the financing strategy for the project can review the updated frequently asked questions and provide feedback at www. midcoast.nsw.gov.au/headoffice. The consultation phase closes on Friday, 14 December.

Wylie, who started the gym said, “They just passed the hat around and before you knew it they’d raised over $900 for the gym.” While ‘Tradies Day’ has been going for more than a decade, five years ago Sue Abrahams decided to join in the fun and organised the first ‘Ladies Day, Fancy Dress lunch.’ “There’s been a different theme every year,” Sue said. “We started with ‘Gowns and Slippers, then ‘Witches’, ‘Gangsters’, ‘Fairies’ and this year we were all ‘Sinners and Saints’. And just like the Tradies, the women raise money for local charities, this year no different with $720 heading off to a worthy

WITH online entries and the Notice of Race now up and running for the 12th annual Sail Port Stephens regatta, an unforgettable sailing holiday experience awaits for everything from IRC, Super 12 and Farr 40 yachts to cruising boats, trailer sailers, 16-Foot skiffs and junior dinghies. Dates for 2019 are 8-14 April, which falls outside the busy school holiday and Easter periods. The iconic Commodores Cup is held over the first three days, followed by a layday to allow crews to enjoy the region’s many attractions. Racing then heats up for the final three days, both inshore and off, with the Pantaenius Port Stephens Trophy. Jewel in the crown is the Garmin NSW IRC Championship, which attracts one of the largest and most competitive fleets on the domestic IRC scene. The Super 12 division, for PHRF-rated boats between 9.1 and 12.2 metres, also conducts its State titles in conjunction with Sail Port Stephens. The 2019 event will welcome the Farr 40 One Design fleet, while invitations have been issued to trailer yachts (under Cat 7 safety) along with 16-Foot skiffs and junior dinghy classes. Following consultation with competitors, there are new divisions including a TP52 Class under the IRC banner and a Cruising NonSpinnaker Class and Jeanneau Class (spinnaker and non-spinnaker) for the Commodores Cup. That means more prizes up for grabs and an easier task for the handicapping committee. In another change of format, racing for the trailer yachts, skiffs and junior dinghies will be staged during the main event, not as satellite events in the following week. Their courses will be immediately off Nelson Bay breakwall to bolster spectator viewing and allow more competitors to feel part of the regatta festivities. At least six TP52s are expected, including Marcus Blackmore’s Botin-designed Hooligan that will defend its NSW crown. “When you look at the sailing calendar, this is one of the outstanding regattas for IRC boats in Australia,” Blackmore says. “I love coming here because it has great sailing and a real holiday atmosphere, while my wife gets to play golf while I go off sailing.” Early bookings are encouraged for those seeking marina berths, as fleet sizes have been on a consistent upward trajectory in recent years. The three major marinas – d’Albora Marina Nelson Bay, The Anchorage and Soldiers Point Marina – all reach capacity yet bend over backwards to assist Sail Port Stephens entrants. The social calendar is equally packed, again commencing with a Monday welcome party hosted by Wild Oats Wines. The Commodores Cup presentation night, traditionally a sell-out, has a beach-themed ball. Post-racing events are also held on the Friday and Saturday at d’Albora Marina’s Broughtons at the Bay function centre, which becomes regatta headquarters. The Women Who Sail Australia (WWSA) group are holding their third consecutive “Gathering on the Bay” on April 6-7 before making way for crews from a large feederrace fleet from Pittwater’s Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

My best friend has known for years the name I have planned to give my first child. Now she has bought a puppy and taken the name. I am furious.

Women’s Auxiliary End of Year Dear News Of The Area, The final engagement for the ladies of the Auxiliary was a very casual affair, good food, good company and lots of laughter. Twenty women arrived at Mumm’s for lunch and as usual everything went like clockwork. Everyone enjoyed their main meal and was almost, but not quite, too full for their dessert. With a valiant effort not a scrap was wasted and it just took a coffee or two to complete a splendid repast. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the community for their support during 2018. Season’s Greetings to all and to all the very best for 2019. Margaret Munright Tea Gardens RSL Women’s Auxiliary

Ms KP Dear Ms KP, I guess it depends what you had planned to call this child. Was it Marley or Benji or Rufus or Rex? These are names that should not be bestowed on a child, so your friend has actually done you a huge favour. Perhaps she took the name to save your child years of embarrassment. You should thank her instead of being furious. Names are a very personal thing, but some parents are just clueless and their kids suffer a lifetime of embarrassment because of it. Here are some of them (and also a reason why not everyone should procreate just because they can): Alphabeta, Earwacker and Gassy are listed as names in Births, Deaths and Marriages. What were they thinking? In a recent news story, a steward copped a lot of flack for having a dig at a child called Abcde. Shouldn’t it have been the parent copping it for being a moron? Your name is often the first thing people will learn about you. It is all about making a great first impression. I’m sorry your friend has called her dog after your baby name, but there’s not a lot you can do about it now. If it is any consolation, dogs generally don’t live a long time, so if you can put up with her faux pas for a bit over a decade, the dog will be gone, and your child can keep the name it is entitled to without the competition. Carpe diem. Jasminda.

is hoping for a repeat of last year’s ‘endless summer’ weather, when temperatures hovered above 30 degrees and breezes mostly stayed light to moderate, bringing the popular offshore courses into play and keeping incidents to a minimum. “Generally the racing is quite laid back, although in the high-performance classes it can be as willing as you’ll find anywhere. Fortunately, we’ve got a high-powered jury to sort out any rules issues,” Thompson said. “It’s also a versatile sailing area, with some interesting courses inside the bay and beautiful islands near the Heads to sail around. And what I think is the best racecourse in Australia lies just to the north of Cabbage Tree Island in Providence Bay. It’s perfect sailing and we have some great races out there.”

THE MYALL Masters Swimming Club is among eight Port Stephens Sports Clubs to receive State Government funding towards the purchase of a much needed heart defibrillator. Port Stephens Liberal Candidate, Jaimie Abbott joined Port Stephens Duty MLC, Catherine Cusack and members of the Myall Masters at the Tea Gardens Swimming Pool last week for the announcement of the Grant. The Eagle Rockers are a dance group from Stockton in Newcastle Rudy Galea told News of The Area, “We have about 150 members and we meet every week for a few hours of dancing.” “We do a lot of line dancing, cha cha, partner

First rate! Club Bowls Co-ordinator, Col Amos and wife Joan managed to make the night. It was great to see Col back on his feet after a long and protracted illness. One of the highlights

of the evening was the awarding of the Clubman of the Year trophy to Col. This is a very prestigious award and I’m sure would have been unanimously approved by all members. Much thanks are due to the members of the Women’s Bowling Club who attended to the organisation of the evening with their usual professionalism. 5 December The RSL LifeCare sponsored Versatility Day

Win Four at Zone Championship By Margie TIERNEY

AS most of us wind down towards Christmas, local Hawks Nest and State champion athlete, Keira McGregor was back on the track earlier this month competing in Zone Championships at the start of the Little Athletics Competition season. The competition was hot and so too was the weather. “39 degrees and a roaring northerly wind which blew tents out of the ground

and was dangerous for spectators and competitors alike,” Keira’s Dad, John McGregor said. Over two days of competition, Keira competed in five events, winning the 100 metre sprint in record time on Day One. 12 year old Keira also won the long jump and again broke the current record. In the searing heat on Day Two of competition, Keira battled the elements to come in second by 0.1 sec, in the 200 metre distance

race. “Then came the triple jump where she had to handle the huge wind,” John said. “She did a great job and covered 10.22m to win , just 4 cm off the record.” “Lastly she had to go in the Senior’s relay with Raymond Terrace girls.” “She was the only 12 year old in it of course and ran a great second leg to help the team to victory.” “So overall an amazing carnival, breaking two Zone records and winning four events.” So what’s next for Keira. It’s off to Regionals in February then hopefully State and Nationals.
