Raindrops for Farmers
Flannel and Akubras, boots and cowboy hats By Margie TIERNEY A MONTH or so ago, Lions Club President John Hughes was a worried man. John had just got together with the management of the Hawks Nest Golf Club to organise a fundraising dinner/ dance to raise money
for our drought stricken farmers. John was worried that no one would come, but he needn’t have been concerned. Last Saturday night’s ‘Coast to Country Fundraising Event was a sellout. “We’ve had wonderful support from the community,

with over a $1,000 dollars received in donations for our raffles, silent auctions donations and support from dozens of businesses in town,” John Hughes said. 170 tickets were sold, and by the end of the night more than $14,000 had been raised to help our nearby farming communities. The theme of the night,

Flannel and Akubras, boots and cowboy hats FROM Page 1 ‘Coast to Country’ saw the locals turn out in flannel and Akubras, boots and cowboy hats. The dance floor played home to a demonstration
of line dancers, while the local band Driftwood played all night, their appearance also on their own dime. But it was the real life story of Dungog farmer Emily Nielson which brought home the reality of the drought for those battling it year in and year out. As Emily told the story of her family’s struggles on the land since 2016, you could have heard a pin drop.
“This drought, the one they’re saying is the worst in a hundred years, will affect us all,” Emily told the crowd. In a moving speech, Emily told of the struggles to feed her dairy cows, when there was no rain to grow their feed and then no money to buy feed. She spoke of the heartbreaking deaths of her cows and calves, and the powerlessness to stop it.
newsofthearea.com.au Emily also called on the community to take up a challenge. “Buy your meat from your local butcher, your bread from your local baker and your fruit and veg from your local supplier,” Emily said. “By doing that you will support our local farmers and businesses, you could be the customer who keeps them going.”

Festival Countdown By Margie TIERNEY
THE MYALL River Festival is just over a month away and it’s a hectic time for those involved in putting on the family fun event in Tea Gardens this year. Meetings of the Festival Committee are being ramped up with the final touches being made to the program of events on Saturday 13 October. “The community is really getting on board with
sponsorship and applications for stalls from business and not for profit groups,” Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce President Graham Lang said. “This is going to be a great day out for locals and visitors to Tea Gardens and the start of making the Festival an iconic destination on the tourist map.” “We’ve been inundated with applications for stalls and are just about to close the books” Graham said.
Among the highlights of this year’s Festival will be the prawn eating competition, Crowded House Tribute Band, dunking machine, Greenpaws Dog Show and of course the Fireworks finale. There’ll be plenty for the kids to do from pony rides, to the petting zoo, mega jumping castle and the Andrenalin Rush, a ride that will popular with both adults and kids. The Duck Derby will be
back as well along with vintage cars, face painting, ‘buy my wardrobe’ and pony rides. There’ll also be dance and local school performances along with a line dancing demonstration. Of course volunteers on the day are always welcome, so if you’d like to lend a hand just send a message through the Festival’s Facebook page, Myall River Festival. If you’d like to help our, come along to the Festival Committees next meeting on Wednesday 19 September at 5pm at the Tea Gardens Hotel.

Art Therapy to Assist
ART therapy has been used to create some special rocks this week, sharing a very special message. Community groups working together in kindness, thoughtfulness and caring for others going through difficult times have resulted in a great activity to acknowledge ‘R U Okay?’ day, celebrated Nationally this week. This day reminds everyone to ask those around us ‘are you okay?’ on any given day in the hopes of reaching out to someone who may be struggling. From an idea presented in the facebook group ‘NSW Rocks’, the Art Therapists with Port Stephens Community Drug Action Team
Allissa Hassett and Evie Kalina Mauldin, with help from face paint artist Judi Walker, provided a table, paint and rocks to teach some art skills at the ‘Walk With Us’ event for Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network, in honour of R U Okay day. Allissa Hassett and Evie Kalina Mauldin offer free art therapy programs for adults and young people going through difficult times, funded by Port Stephens Community Drug Action Team. Allisa told News Of The Area, “Art therapy is an evidence-based mental health support that offers individuals a non-intrusive way of communicating when words are not enough.”
Using the process of art making, a problem or situation can be worked through in order to find new ways of looking at things.” Evie said, “Art therapy programs are also valuable for those who are caring for others because it ‘encourages carers to take care of their own needs, through exploring
key barriers to self-care and how to achieve good balance between caring for self and caring for others, issues of health and wellbeing and better understanding carer-related stress, and encouraging carers in identifying difficult feelings associated with their caring role.”

Your will is an extremely important document and governs what happens to your assets upon your death. Estate planning, and particularly drafting and interpreting wills, is a complex area of law. Although this is so, people commonly think it is straight forward.
You have spent a lifetime accumulating your wealth and transferring that wealth to the next generation is not necessarily easy. Even in simple family circumstances and with relatively straight forward assets, we often see problems created by self-drafted or selfamended wills. Obtaining estate planning advice and having your will professionally drafted is of great importance. For those who have gone to the effort and expense of doing so in the past, it can be tempting to make small changes
to the will by hand afterward. There are however numerous rules which govern whether a will is validly amended and often these rules are not followed when people amend their wills themselves.
Amending your will yourself can make it difficult for your executor to administer your estate. The amendments you make may not be effective or may have an unintended effect. It may also increase the chances of a dispute arising about the terms of your will or increase the likelihood of a family provision claim being made.
People are often looking to save on the cost of obtaining advice from a lawyer when amending wills themselves. In reality they are often creating the need for additional work to be done after their death and it costs significantly more in the long run.

Tea Gardens and surrounding communities with classes in everything from art and photography to french lessons and gardening, all run by volunteers The celebrations will kick off on Sunday 23 September with a performance of the trio, the Charisma Ensemble in the Hawks Nest Community Hall at 2pm. Barbara told News Of The Area, “The trio consists of three lecturers from Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Ros Dunlop, clarinets, David Miller A.M., piano and Julia Ryder, cello.” “Tickets, which include afternoon tea, are $20 and are available from Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens Pharmacies. Barbara said, “David, as
Head of Performance Studies at Sydney Con, recently visited with an ensemble of graduate students, a saxophone quartet at the start of their Northern Tour, and this is another opportunity to hear him play.” “Our Annual Art and Photography Exhibition opens on Friday evening, 28 September, and will continue throughout the weekend.” “This has proven to be a highlight of the year, showcasing the work of local artists who belong to these groups within Myall U3A.” And finally, in recognition of the Centenary of the Signing of the Armistice at the end of WWI, the newly formed U3A Theatre
is collaborating with an ensemble from the U3A Choir in ‘Remember the Armistice’. Featuring letters, video clips and songs of the time, together with a display of memorabilia, the event is being held at the Tea Gardens Baptist Church on Saturday 29 September. Barbara advises, “The audience arrive at 6.30pm to see some of this memorabilia before the performance begins at 7pm.” Tickets are $15 and are also on sale at the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest Pharmacies. Proceeds from this evening will be donated to Legacy, particularly people who are in need of counselling.
TEA Gardens Police are continuing their investigations into a series of break ins last week. Thieves targeted three homes in the Palm Lake Resort and another house in the Grange. The break ins all occurred Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
Police say they took cash, but left behind other valuables such as jewellery and credit cards. Senior Constable Rob Wylie from Tea Gardens police said, “We are following a number of leads and forensics have taken fingerprints from the homes that were targeted.”
“These were opportunistic thieves, so we’re calling on the community to be more vigilant in locking all doors and windows.” None of the residents, some of whom were asleep at the time of the robberies, was injured.

Raindrops for Farmers By Margie TIERNEY SOME much needed rain has fallen along the Myall Coast, but unfortunately not where it’s needed most, out west. New South Wales has just recorded its eighth driest winter on record with rainfall 54 percent below average, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Doing its best to help our drought stricken farmers is the IGA Lovey’s Grocers in Hawks Nest. They just started the ‘Raindrops for Aussie Farmers’ campaign. “Lovey’s Grocers IGA have partnered with Drought Angels to help fundraise for farmers and provide relief where it is needed most,” Karen Marples said. “The $2 raindrop tokens are available in store until November and 100 per cent
of the funds raised will be donated to the Drought Angels Appeal.” “We all want to help our Aussie farmers through this drought and by purchasing a $2 raindrop token, our customers can make a difference’, James Lovegrove, Co-Owner Lovey’s Grocers, said. He added, “This initiative is happening in IGA stores across the country to support the lifeblood of Australia, our farmers.” “If we’re each able to give a little, it can make a big difference to those who need our help.” Drought Angels support Aussie farmers and their rural communities with meaningful and personalised assistance. They provide help including food hampers, care packs, prepaid visas local
store vouchers, stock feed and hay. They also organise ‘Rural Day Off’ events to provide
remember all the steps quickly enough, or keep up with the energy of the younger dancers. Let’s face it, most of us who attend the Live! concerts are in our seventies or eighties, with a few youngsters in their sixties, and the grey matter just can’t remember all those moves quickly enough, and the legs and lungs certainly have trouble keeping up. But, at Live!, we just learn one step per month, and it’s gentle enough that we can all enjoy it without feeling the need for CPR at the end. In another change, members of the audience are becoming more involved in the actual concerts. In October, some of them are joining with friends from their Ukulele Group to provide additional
entertainment in the Afternoon Tea Break. In yet another change, the band Sage has changed from being a five piece band to become a four piece outfit. They’ve also changed their costumes from the familiar shades of red with black hats to something a bit softer. See the pic.
q
By (Rockin’) Robin PETROS I’VE written many articles over the last few years about the Live! Live! Live! concerts which take place at the Baptist Church Hall in Tea Gardens on the third Thursday of each month, and I’m still blown away by the way these guys keep stepping up to cater for their audiences. My last article talked about the “family atmosphere” created amongst the audience members at these shows, and that feeling just grows and grows. Each month there is now a segment where us oldies get to learn some basic Line Dancing. I’ve tried Line Dancing before, but could never

Positive Behaviour for Learning Winners
By Rachael VAUGHAN
THIS week’s Positive Behaviour for Learning Awards were presented by Julie Hubbard, Principal of Karuah Public School. Julie was also supported by a number of teachers from Karuah Public School. The Award winners for this week were; Mikayla Anderson from Hunter River High School, awarded for her involvement in raising $3,500 for the Dolly’s Dream Foundation. Mikayla helped by selling raffle tickets, helping with the setting up and packing up and organising and participating in activities and events during the day. William Reynolds from Karuah Public School, for his outstanding attitude while representing Karuah Public School at the Hunter River High Showcase performance. Dear Jasminda,
My friend has gone a bit loopy. First it was just yoga and incense, but now she thinks she can speak whale. She actually calls herself a whale whisperer on her social media page. I mean, really? Miss KL, Shoal Bay Dear Miss KL,
Club Run to OPINION the old Beatie Hotel Dear News Of The Area,
RECENTLY the local Tea Gardens Motor

Club had a most enjoyable Club Run to the old Beatie Hotel / Pub in East Gresford. We went via Freeway towards Raymond Terrace, turned into Italia Road to Seaham, than Woodville , Paterson, Vacy and arrived on a sunny day at the Beatie Hotel. This Run was the most enjoyable scenic run with green fields, full dams and on both sides of the road we saw 50 / 100 / 200 acre properties with impressive homesteads and large sheds, besides large chicken and pig sheds. This Club Run was now our 3rd to the Beatie Hotel. The management of the Hotel had reserved tables with proper table cloth, well decorated for our members and we enjoyed a well priced delicious meal from their comprehensive menu. Afterwards most members drove home via Dungog and Clarence Town. All round a successful Club Run. For the many newcomers to Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest it would be worthwhile to consider this beautiful scenic drive. Juergen Seil President TG/HN Motor Club
WHALES are truly magnificent creatures and they do make some incredible sounds, but I’m not sure we can be expected to interpret them. They only other example I know of someone (or some creature to be more exact) speaking whale is Dory from Finding Nemo. Is this what your friend sounds like when she speaks whale? If so, she may need some sort of intervention of the white coat variety. A whale whisperer? I’ve heard of a horse whisperer, but it must be so much easier whispering to land-based creatures. How does one whisper while wearing scuba gear or a snorkel? What do you actually whisper to a whale apart from, ‘Gosh, you are huge, please don’t swim too close. Sorry for accidentally invading your personal space.’ I’m not convinced that your friend can speak whale, and I don’t think she’s convinced either. It may just be a way to appear more spiritual and worldly and in tune with her psyche or life’s vibrations or whatever else we are supposed to be in tune with when we aren’t racing around like little ants trying to pay off mortgages while the country falls apart. Who has time to speak whale when our super funds are dwindling and our politicians keep jumping on and off the Canberra merrygo-round, stabbing each other in the back when they should be running the country. Forget whale. How about we all learn to speak some common sense for a change.

Club Mixed Pairs Champions Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 5 SEPTEMBER The spring bowling season was off to a damp start with early showers delaying play for 30 minutes today. The heavy rain early in the week prevented any play on the grass green so all matches were played on the synthetic. Despite the weather, 43 players competed in the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition. Five teams completed the double however; it was the team of Ray Prigg, Ron Green and Merv Mills that took home the money on 58 points Col Fossey was the winner of the Myall Bistro Voucher. The Club welcomed back Ron Green, Luke Gliwa, Leigh Hunt and Geoff Page. Great to have you all back!
8 September A large contingent of bowlers representing the Bay Bowlers took on some local players in a “friendly” today. The grass green, although still a little damp, was brought into play to accommodate nearly 70 players enjoying some friendly bowls and great fellowship offered by the Tea Gardens Country Club Bowling Club. It would be fair to say that bowls was definitely the winner. 9 September The final of the Club Mixed Pairs competition was played today in beautiful sunny conditions. Defending Champions, Bette and Col Saillard were opposing Sandra Leisemann and Merv Mills. The beautifully prepared grass green was used for this event and although still a touch slow, proved the perfect

venue for the final played in front of an appreciative gallery. It was anybody’s game at the hallway point, even though Sandra and Merv trailed by 3 shots. The likely turning point of the game occurred on the 14th end when Bette and Col picked up a fortuitous 4 to open up an 8 shot lead. Sandra and Merv fought back to win the closing 4 ends but they could not bridge the gap. Bette and Col were declared the Club Mixed Pairs Champions for 2018 winning 14-12. Congratulations to them and to all players taking part in what was a very successful competition. The Sunday bowlers travelled down to Adamstown today to play for the perpetual trophy they have with the Belmont Sports Travelling Bowlers. Tea Gardens won two of the five rinks and went down by 19 shots overall.

Kim Post, who organised the visit, said, “Karen is a wonderful communicator as well as a skilful coach, we all learned a lot during her visit,” Karen who has played at the absolute top level of international bowls, stressed that while a physical sport, the “Zen” of Lawn Bowling was as important as the physical elements of the sport. A fierce competitor during her career, she stressed that the ability to focus, exercise self control, display a positive body language and show

mental toughness was as important as having the game skills on the green. She gave many examples where these qualities contributed to winning team cultures at the very highest levels and how those attending could incorporate them into their game and club. An ‘On the green skills’ workshop followed and all attendees got to bowl for Karen and receive tips on style and technique. This fun session saw all involved gain valuable improvements in their game. Sam Rees, Men’s Club President said, “Speaking and playing with an international champion cannot help but improve your game both mentally and physically, it was great to meet the person behind the reputation, we were all very impressed by her and benefited greatly from her input.”
