some much needed cover while they wait for the Tea Gardens ferry service to Nelson Bay. Liberal Candidate

“This follows a previous upgrade to resurface the facility, which was completed in April 2016,” Ms Abbott said. “The Government provided $120,000 towards the project under the ‘Boating Now’ program.” MidCoast Council provided the rest of the funding.

weather. “Due to hot and dry weather, water restrictions are often necessary at this time of year in the MidCoast,” said Council’s Director of Water Services, Brendan Guiney. “Whilst holiday visitors can increase the demand for water, our trigger levels are actually based on flows in the Manning River. Whenever the river is flowing well we can easily keep our dam storage full right through the summer season, when rainfall is following usual patterns.” “Restrictions are required when the flow of our rivers drop to a level we are unable to pump from. There is often comment from the community that we wait to introduce restrictions until after the holiday period, to allow
Ms Abbott said work on a second maritime infrastructure project in the area will get under way later this month to replace the existing timber wharf at the Karuah boat ramp with a 100 percent funded $240,500 ‘Boating Now’ Grant. our tourists to use water. This is not the case – the timing is due to the climate and river flows.” “One or two recent storms in January maintained river flows, otherwise we would have had to apply water restrictions sooner.” Flows in the Manning River have dropped and as a result, the water supply for the Manning and Great Lakes area is drawing on the supply in Bootawa Dam. The rivers providing water to the supplies in Gloucester, Stroud and Bulahdelah are also at low levels. From Monday 11 February, you can water outside using hand-held hoses, for one hour every second day, before 9am or after 4pm. Garden irrigation systems may only be used for 15 minutes as part of the one hour allocation. If your house number
was badly needed and long overdue. “The Myall River Action Group initiated the project under the ‘Better Boating’ Program in 2012, which also included a new public wharf on Marine Drive.” Mr Grainger said, “The wharf was constructed in October 2018 and it is pleasing to see that program is about to be completed,

This includes topping up home pools. In addition, use buckets, with trigger hose rinsing for washing cars and boats. If possible, always wash vehicles and flush boat motor engines on grassed areas - this will help keep your lawn alive! Outdoor cleaning of driveways, paved areas, windows, walls and roofs should all be undertaken using buckets only. The restrictions apply to households, businesses and public areas – with Council restricting their watering of parks and public areas also. “In the past, we’ve experienced great support from our community when water
World Day of Prayer By Margie TIERNEY THE Tea Gardens Baptist Church has issued an open invitation to the community to join in the World Day of Prayer on Friday 1 March at 1.30pm. The World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women from more than
170 countries and regions, who come together to share their hopes and fears, their joys and sorrows, their opportunities and needs. “This year Slovenia is the host country and we’ll have a programme which includes concerns about cultural, environmental and
religious issues,” Ruth Calcutt said. “As we share in this service we will be praying for these issues as well as the Bible Society’s project this year ‘Trauma Counselling for Women’ with funds raised for this much needed Slovenian project.”

This will assist with water security for the Manning Scheme by reducing reliance on the Manning River. Find out more about the scheme at midcoastwater.com. au/site/nabiacwtp. For more information on water restrictions, visit www. midcoast.nsw.gov.au/ waterrestrictions for full details of the moderate restrictions and any changes to restriction levels.
Ruth said, “We are planning to have some Slovenian items on display, a slide show of this beautiful country as well as some Slovenian music.” “All are invited to join us for this service and the afternoon tea that will follow.” The Tea Gardens Baptist Church is located at 115 Myall Street.

Boomerangs Back at Work By Margie TIERNEY IT was back to work for the Boomerang Bag volunteers last Saturday, as the group held the first of its monthly sewing bees for 2019 at the Tea Gardens Hotel. The sewing machines were going full throttle along with the ironing board as the volunteers cut, sewed and created the reusable shopping bags which have become a much-have necessary accessory. 2018 was a big year for the group, with their bags featuring at the Myall River Festival and Spring and Summer Markets at the Hotel. “All these events were a big success and our raffles were popular,” Julie Sims said. “We introduced produce bags into the mix and they
too were a big hit and we’ll continue to make them again this year.” “One of our biggest achievements last year was the phasing out of plastic bag usage for meat raffles at The Tea Gardens Country Club, The Golf Club (although they relented over Christmas using them during the busy season) and the Tea Gardens Hotel saving thousands upon thousands of single use plastic bags going into landfill.” “The Boatshed, BT’s for Fashion and many other shops are already part of the anti-plastic movement and the Fisherman’s Coop is now using fully biodegradable plastic bags as well as producing their own reusable carry bags,” Julie said. If you’d like to join the Boomerang Bags movement,

Dr Gillespie said the Roads to Recovery program was introduced by The Nationals during the Howard Government and had involved close collaboration between the Australian and local governments to deliver the road infrastructure improvements required to support economic growth.

“The funding provides Councils with the ability to invest in upgrading local roads, thereby helping to improve safety and efficiency levels for all users of the network and economic growth in their communities,” Dr Gillespie said. The allocations for each Council have been calculated using the proportion of Financial Assistance Grants that each local governing body receives and updated assessments undertaken by local Government Grants commissions. Through the ‘Roads to Recovery’ Program, the Federal Government supports Councils with the ongoing maintenance of Australia’s local road infrastructure, facilitating greater access and improved safety, economic and social outcomes.

Roads assistance for Councils THE local road network throughout southern areas of the Lyne electorate will receive a significant injection of funds over the next four years as part of the Federal Coalition Government’s funding boost to the ‘Roads to Recovery’ programme. Local Federal MP Dr David Gillespie today announced that Dungog, Maitland, Port Stephens and MidCoast Councils would share in a further $22,269,281 under the programme between 2019-20 and 2023-24. Dungog Council will receive $2,299,290, Maitland Council $3,491,030, Port Stephens $3,122,109 and MidCoast Council $13,356,852. “This funding is in addition to the Bridges Renewal and Road Blackspots Grants, as well as this year’s allocation of $34,031,661 shared across the four Councils in Federal Financial Assistance Grants for both roads and other infrastructure,” Dr Gillespie said. This year Dungog Shire Council secured $2,576,026, Maitland Council $6,998,594, Port Stephens Council $6,644,618 and MidCoast Council $17,812,423. “These funds will be an important component in the delivery of Council’s roads

When parties to a marriage or a de facto relationship want Court Orders to divide their property, time limits apply as to when they can bring an application. A party to a marriage has 12 months from the date of their divorce (not separation) to ask the Court for Orders; and a party to a de facto relationship has 2 years from the date that they separate. On the application of one party, the Court can give permission to extend this time limit in certain circumstances. Notwithstanding that de facto couples have been able to divide their property under the Family Law Act since 2009, until recently only married couples
could consent (between themselves) to extend the time limit. De facto couples required permission from the Court as soon as the 2 years elapsed. However, in October 2018 amendments to the Family Law Act were passed, bringing the provisions into line so that both married and de facto couples can now agree (between themselves) to extend the time to seek Orders to divide their property. The correction of this anomaly will remove additional expense and hassle for de facto couples, and ensure consistency regardless of the type of relationship.

Around 41,000 Australian men die each year from preventable disease, that’s four lives lost every hours and four families left to grieve forever. The MHERV van, which is sponsored by Rotary, specifically targets towns where the average male population is aged 60 plus. Health checks for blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar (diabetes) were carried out last week. MHERV’s Operational Manger, Barry Knowles said, “The Mherv team has many times identified a life threatening condition and saved someone from an early death.”

Golf Club will fight on despite set back THE Bulahdelah Golf Club lost over a third of its roof in the freak storm on 22 December 2018. With it went over 60 solar panels and all air conditioners. With the roof gone the Club suffered severe water damage to almost all areas. Barrie Bishop from the Club told News Of The Area, “There is no power to the building, but 2 temporary points have been established to help maintain golf games and hence some income.”

“The popular Chinese restaurant is closed until repairs can be done” “There is no refrigeration and no eftpos so services are very limited.” The insurance assessors have completed their survey and a report is keenly awaited. In the meantime the Club is calling on locals to support the Club in any venture they can get to get the Club up and running. “Just a few months ago we celebrated our 60th anniversary,” Mr Bishop said.

Get ready – Business Awards open soon BUSINESSES and community organisations should start jotting down their business achievements over the past 12 months in readiness for the 2019 Insurance Advisernet MidCoast Business Chamber Awards, to be announced at a gala dinner in August. This year the business chamber-backed awards are open for an extended period – from Friday, March 1 until close of business Friday, June 21. “This gives businesses plenty of time to decide which category they fit best and document exactly how they’ve gone above and beyond in 2018 and 2019,” said MidCoast Business Chamber Awards SubCommittee spokesperson, Jenny Ashton. To spread the word, an evening launch function will be held at Tuncurry Bowling Club on Friday March 8, 6.30pm for 7pm start. Anyone involved in the business and the community sector in the MidCoast area can attend but RSVPs are necessary by emailing mcbusinessawards@gmail. com Jenny explained that entering the business
awards is not just good for a business’s image and networking opportunities, but it’s a great business development and planning tool. It allows in-depth reflection of where you’ve been with the business and where you’re heading. This year, the award entry process has been simplified. All questions and contact details are available on the website https:// midcoastbusinessawards. com/ “Answering the award questions, requires a broad brush analysis of the business – things like how well goals have been achieved. Businesses are also encouraged to examine how they have future-proofed their business and gone the extra mile for their customers and staff,” Jenny said. Categories for entry are; Outstanding Business Leader, Excellence in Business, Excellence in Customer Service, Trades and Construction, Health and Wellbeing, Tourism and Hospitality, Best Start Up, Excellence in Professional Services and Excellence in Retail Services. Multiple entries are also allowed. The general public will
also get a chance to vote for their favourite businesses in the ever-popular People’s Choice Award, which will accept votes on the website and via printed forms available at businesses across the region. In addition, awards for Business of the Year, Runner up Business of the Year, Hall of Fame and Community Service award will be awarded. The awards ceremony, on Saturday August 17, is an annual social highlight for the MidCoast business communities. The formal occasion will be supported by sponsors; Insurance Advisernet, Holiday Coast Credit Union, Stockland Forster, ETC, Forster Bowling Club, WIN TV, Midcoast Council, Johnson and Thompson Accountants, Concept Design Kitchens, Mid Coast Automotive, Newcastle Permanent, Evermore Retirement Living and Kedwell Constructions. A BIG week was had by all at the annual Veterans Golf Tournament at the Hawks Nest Golf Course. “We had 292 registered golfers, but many of those came with partners, so we had well over 300 people here throughout the week,” General Manager Greg Acret told News Of The Area. The sun shone down for the five day event, great for the golfers, but the long hot summer has proved challenging for the greenkeepers. “The greens staff have really had their hands full keeping the course looking its best because of the hot dry weather,” David said.

The Veterans Week Championship is restricted to visiting golfers only. “Many of our own Veterans who play on Tuesdays and Thursdays volunteer their services to the event, but they don’t play.” And businesses in Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens also enjoy the boost the golfers give to local coffers. David Acret said, “What people do is book for next year before they leave here this year.” A sentiment echoed by Central Coast golfer, Bruce Barron who’s been coming to the Veterans for the past 6 years. “It’s great, we just have the best time.”
