Mudcrabs turn blue By Ann SCULLY

PINK Day has always been the major fundraising day at a home game throughout the Rugby season but this year the Mudcrabs have turned blue to create awareness about the three million Australians who are currently experiencing anxiety or depression. The Beyond Blue Foundation is in a position to equip everyone in Australia with the knowledge and skills to protect their own mental health by giving people the confidence to support those around them and making anxiety, depression and suicide part of everyday conversations. This coming Saturday is a home game for the Myall Coast Mudcrabs who will be hosting Blue Day at Myall Park, Hawks Nest CONTINUED Page 2

MEET: John Sahyoun, Pat Tate and Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead in Bulahdelah.

Bromhead talks State Budget By Daniel SAHYOUN

THE NSW budget, Council amalgamation and funding applications were discussed with Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead during his recent Electorate meeting in Bulahdelah. It could have been the case that the community didn’t know Bromhead was coming to the area, however the National Party MP told the small but interested group of community members that the State Budget was “under control.”

“The 2015-16 Budget has reported a surplus of $3.4 billion and the Budget forecasts an even higher surplus in 201617,” he said. “We are delivering on Roads, Hospitals and Education and we are delivering infrastructure at record levels.” Mr Bromhead said infrastructure projects funded in the 2016-17 Budget in Myall Lakes include $16 million for roads, 1.2 million for Social Housing upgrades and $1.7 million for upgrades to facilities at Taree TAFE.

An allocation of $10million has also been made to Manning Base Hospital for a new purpose-built facility for improved cancer care and renal dialysis services. For Education, Mr Bromhead said Gonski School funding would be fully funded for the next four years and RAMS funding would be significantly increased. Reductions in stamp duty on mortgages and share transactions which came into effect on 1 July were also discussed. Mr Bromhead said,

“These will have a positive effect on businesses.” When asked about the Council amalgamation, Mr Bromhead said he was pleased with Glenn Handford’s appointment as Interim General Manager of the new MidCoast Council. “Through effective management, Great Lakes Council changed from an underperforming one to become one of the best Council’s south of the Queensland border,” Mr Bromhead said. “The merger will create a stronger and more efficient council which will free up money for important projects such as roads and vital infrastructure.” Mr Bromhead will be hosting the next Bulahdelah Electorate Meeting at 9.00am on Monday 15 August at the Rural Transaction Centre.

T’WAS the season to be jolly as Christmas in July was celebrated at Karuah RSL Club last week. Santa hats, tinsel and sleigh bells decked the tables for the occasion which was organised by MidCoast Council's Social and Recreational Services and Neighbour Aid Services in Hawks Nest and Stroud. Christmas spirit was high as the groups enjoyed all things festive including a traditional Christmas feast with all the trimmings, carolling and dancing. Live music from Johnny Noble kept the crowd entertained as season’s greetings were exchanged between group members, volunteers and organisers. A constant buzz of Christmas cheer was present throughout the day with continual laughter and chatter echoing around the room. More than 70 people attended the festivities representing the Myall Dolphins from Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens, Bulahdelah Neighbour Aid Group, Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Codgers Men’s Group and Stroud Support Services Group. The popular Ageing Services programs provide social support for people over the age of 65 and allow many opportunities for members to enjoy conversation and companionship. Client Services Officer Toni Petterson said the Christmas in July social outing was made possible through support from MidCoast Council. “Rather than having separate outings for each of the groups, we organised a combined day

Great community work at fire By Dave BRAZIER

EMERGENCY Services have praised the quick action from members of the public out for an early afternoon walk on Sunday 26 June who certainly helped avoid an even worse situation when an amount of smoke was seen coming from a house in Karthena Street, Hawks Nest. Just after midday and screaming for assistance, their calls were answered by more locals who assisted by calling ‘000’ and moving a car from the driveway adjacent to the ignition source. The two story timber residence had flames quickly rising high on the right side

News Of The Area

of the building and into the upstairs level, billowing plumes of dark smoke out of windows and the roof top which soon found themselves under attack from NSW Fire and Rescue who were quick to arrive on the scene. Upon entering the residence with Breathing Apparatus, NSW F.R crews quickly established that the residents were not present inside and began operations to eliminate heat and fuel sources from within the top level. The top level has received severe fire, smoke and water damage. Both Hawks Nest NSW Fire and Rescue vehicles attended the scene, along with Ambulance, Police and R.F.S Crews from Pindimar

and Tea Gardens. Investigations into the fires ignition point and cause quickly focussed on the melted demise of a series of garbage bins at the right side of the premises. The cause of the fire is believed to relate to some ashes from a fire place being put into one of the bins, which unfortunately has ignited and burnt up the side of the building before entering the upper level. This event proves a timely reminder to ensure that when emptying or removing ashes from fireplaces that there is absolutely no chance of any further ignitions from the discarded ruminants, and that they are placed in a suitable area. Mayor MacKenzie supports Karuah Men’s Shed By Daniel SAHYOUN KARUAH Men’s Shed is set to benefit from an $8,000 funding boost made available through a grant from Port Stephens Council. The funding program delivered a total of $19,000 to community organisations in the Port Stephens Local Government Area for projects that will deliver vital services to the community. The Men’s Shed is a registered health promotion charity that supports programs to improve men's health and wellbeing with over 1000 sheds located throughout Australia. The Karuah Men’s Shed has been operating for the past five years and provides a welcoming and supportive environment for its members and visitors. President John King said group members greatly appreciate the funding assistance provided by Port Stephens Mayor Bruce MacKenzie. “The funds will go towards our next major project which is a full replacement of the front deck of the shed,” Mr King said. “We’ve spent a lot of time getting the building up to a safe standard, and once the deck is restored, members will be able to go out and fish from it and it will be a great place to put your feet

up and relax.” Mr King said the organisation hosts regular presentations on health related issues and isalso involved in supporting the health of the wider community through a variety of projects. “The funding our local Council has given us will not only help us, but will also assist the whole community,” Mr King said. Other organisations to receive funding through the program include Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed, Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network and Nelson Bay Australia Day Committee. Mayor Bruce MacKenzie said he had seen first-hand how deserving these organisations were. “There are so many organisations in Port Stephens that are working for no other purpose than to benefit the people to our community,” he said. “There is no underestimating the significance of the work they do, and the difference they make to our community. Mayor MacKenzie said it was a pleasure for Port Stephens Council to make the funds available to be able to support these organisations.

MYALL COAST

News Of The Area

Prickly point Dear News Of The Area,

q

q

IF you don't like the ongoing band-aid jobs at the Boulevarde, WindaWoppa, don't blame the contractors or workers for what you see. They do what their superiors tell them. Sadly none of the decision makers are local. Most of them are high up the ladder of our Council, whichever name it goes by. And sadly they appear to be unable to deliver the goods. Over the last few weeks it was time to put more sand on the Boulevard "in preparation for storm season". A bit late I would have thought. For had the destructive swell early in June come from the SE instead of the NE, the road would again be no more. Late work or early, the mountain of sand created last year near the river

mouth for the purpose of renourishment works was apparently inaccessible. Well done. So the solution.... source the sand from the Boulevard itself. Hence everything has been dug up and flattened AGAIN.The beach has been completely rearranged and the newly forming fore dune and seedlings which create stability gone. I have written before voicing my main concern regarding the Boulevarde's erosion. That is the burial of seagrass beds. It’s like killing mangroves- you aren't allowed to do it. I do have another concern. During the latest reconstruction, the hay bales worth thousands of dollars that were laid down last year were pulverised within the new substrate that became the beach. Within days was erosion. This erosion is just in its infancy, yet already some

of the trashed hay bale component has washed towards Barnes Rocks. Scattered with it are ‘Cats Heads’ prickles. They are the seeds of the weed botanic name Tribulusterrestris. If you have never encountered those prickles, go for a walk down there now. Take thick shoes. It is a sad day when someone with feet as leathery as mine cannot walk barefoot on a beach. Waves and high tides will wash the cats heads further up in to the adjacent foredunes and they will grow and spread along the penninsula. Meanwhile back at the unstable Boulevard what is being laid next to the road? You guessed it, brand new hay bales. I hope they have been screened for Cats Heads. Christian Patteson, Hawks Nest

Electricity Inequity around the State

Dear News Of The Area,

DO the residents of Great Lakes realise that, they, together with 4/5 of NSW subsidise the city areas as regards Electricity. 4/5 of NSW is covered by Essential Energy and Endeavor Energy and pay an Electricity Supply Charge (SAC) [thats to have it go past your house] of around $1.60/day plus extra, to the tune of 5c/Kw for each kilowatt hour. If you are privileged enough to live in the rest of the state ,the area from the upper Hunter down to Port Stephens then down to Bega on the South Coast, which includes Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong, then, you are in an Ausgrid area. SAC here are almost half what we pay at 82c/day and less rate per kilowatt. I informed the Member for Myall

Lakes over 12 months ago and he and other National Party members do not seem particularly interested and why would they. They are not going to disrupt the goose that delivers the golden egg. One would think that the State National members would try to do everything possible to break the divide between the city and country. Here, in the country, we pay higher, land rates, electricity, water and fuel. If the State is serious about encouraging people to the country through decentralisation, then, lets begin by making these basic costs fairer. I call upon our state representatives to address this inequity. John Alterator, Hawks Nest
