Forest (Dis) Agreements

A VOCAL group of environmentalists gathered outside Bulahdelah Bowling Club last week, protesting against the Government’s Regional Forest Agreements (RFA). The 20-year North East Regional Agreement is due to expire, and the Federal and State Governments are seeking community input on shaping its renewal. But the noisy protesters say last week’s ‘drop-in’ session was a “sham”. “Both Governments failed to complete the reviews of the original forest agreements that were required to occur every five years,” North Coast Environmental Council spokesperson

DPI Forest Research and Policy Director Paul Wells told News Of The Area there is “no clearfelling in NSW”. “The RFA’s are all about ensuring a sustainable forestry,” he said. “It is about how you harvest the forest and how you manage and perpetuate it.” The DPI encourages industry, environmental groups and the wider community to have their say on issues or changes that need to be captured since the agreements were developed nearly 20 years ago. Submissions can be made online on the DPI website up until 12 March.

NO GO FISH ZONE HUON Aquaculture has extended it’s ‘no fishing zone’ surrounding it’s controversial Yellowtail Kingfish Farms until the end of the month. It follows the escape of 20 thousand fish after a pen was badly damaged in last month’s massive swells that reportedly reached 11 metres high off the
coast of Hawks Nest. A meeting of the Estuary Management Committee involving MidCoast and Port Stephens Councils heard last week how only two thirds of the fish had been recovered. Department of Fisheries told the meeting, that barnacles and debris had built up on the damaged pen, creating more problems in the bad weather.

“From what I understand they are ravenous,” Mr Future said last week. “Once they realise they won’t get any food in the form of pellets they’ll be eating anything they can find.” There’s another school of thought that the fish will not know how to hunt because they’ve been hand fed. Ironically, a decade ago mature Yellowtail Kingfish had been fished out off the coast of New South Wales.

Gordon added, “ We have also been offered accommodation from the Tea Gardens Hotel and provision of the complimentary BBQ for volunteers from Sheargold.” “Anyone wishing to volunteer their services is most welcome.” “We would appreciate hearing from any of you who can assist both financially or personally,” Gordon said. The date for the clean up is Wednesday 21 February. An early start is envisaged, but keep in mind all the volunteers will be rewarded with a great barbecue and a much cleaner river. There might even be the odd treasure or two. If you would like to help contact Gordon Grainger on 4997 0205.

Hydrogen Peroxide is to be used to clean the remaining pens. A Huon ship is reportedly also on its way from Tasmania to help with the recovery of the fish which are being lured back to the pens with pellets. Some Conservationists and Marine Park tourism operators are concerned however that the fish farmed yellowtail will become “voracious feeders”. If you are buying or selling a Registered Training Organisation (“RTO”) it is very important you engage a competent solicitor who has experience in dealing with RTOs. In addition to dealing with the usual sale of business considerations, the sale or purchase of an RTO must also deal with the government department known as the Australian Skill Quality Authority (“ASQA”). ASQA’s approval is not like most other authority approvals as ASQA’s approval cannot be obtained as a pre-condition to completion. This creates a number of legal risks for the parties, for example, what if

There are a number of techniques that can be implemented by a competent solicitor with RTO experience designed to reduce the risk associated with ASQA’s approval process. week for another cleanup of what lies beneath. Last year, the divers came up with an amazing range of rubbish from old car tyres to enough bottles to fill a pub. But the first ever such clean up of the river was marred by very poor visibility and overcast skies. “It is hoped that conditions will be greatly improved this time around,” Co-Ordinator Gordon Grainger said. As well as diving in the waters off Marine Drive in Tea

Gordon Grainger told News Of The Area, “Council have indicated they will support the project with $1000, plus the services of several personnel.” “ They have also agreed to waive tip costs.”

who’s a professional, I think she comes because she enjoys the feedback,” Lyn said. From art with a brush, to art created with a camera, and a broad range of photographs, many capturing the beauty of the Myall Coast were also on display. Stamp out bullying By Rachael VAUGHAN THE recent death of a fourteen year old girl known as ‘Dolly’, who took her own life after years of bullying, has thrust the issue of bullying and mental health amongst young people once again into the spotlight, and in the spotlight is where it should remain. In 2016, suicide was the leading cause of death of children between five and seventeen, In Indigenous communities, the rates are also alarming, and not widely publicised. As a community, and as a nation, we must take action, Laura Francke, Principal Psychologist at Port Stephens Clinical Psychology Services, told News Of The Area, “Children who experience bullying experience significant disadvantages and poorer outcomes across a wide range of areas.” “While most children experience some form of low level teasing during their school years, when this is pervasive it impacts on academic and social wellbeing and in its more severe form can lead to serious mental health implications including anxiety, depression, eating
disorders, school refusal and in some cases suicidality.” Whilst we often hear the comments ‘we didn’t see this coming’ when a young person takes their life, Laura explains there are some signs parents and caregivers can keep an eye out for. “Children generally either internalise or external use their inner turmoil.” “Internalising children may become withdrawn, anxious or sadder than usual and may experience somatic complaints such as stomach and headaches.” “Children who externalise may show increased aggression, problems regulating their behaviour or targeting of peers or siblings who are ‘weaker’ than them.” With this modern technological age, social media and the increase of young people having access to technological devices means that children who are experiencing bullying literally can often find no reprieve, with the online world giving bullies a sense of invincibility and false bravado. Lauren said, “In addition, the severity of bullying appears to have increased as children no
longer need to face the response of their victim or accountability to their peers as they are in a private space with no immediate consequence to their actions.” There are some important things that parents can do to try and protect young people in these situations. “Children need to develop a capacity to manage bullying with strength and resilience, by teaching them to disengage immediately from anyone behaving aggressively to them - a crucial life skill,” says Laura. “Remembering as parents our words create their inner voice, we need to instill confidence in our children and a directly teach them to be assertive to anyone treating them disrespectfully.” “Children do not have the developmental capacity to self regulate when using social media and as parents it is our responsibility to keep their world as safe as possible as they learn these skills,” Laura added. “Setting clear rules about device usage that maintains parental supervision is key to protecting children till they have the maturity to handle these situations.”

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF THE MIDCOAST? Planning for our future starts with you
What matters to you?
We’ve drafted a plan that will become a blueprint to guide our direction over the next decade. It’s the Community Strategic Plan, MidCoast 2030: Shared vision, shared responsibility. And it’s currently open for feedback.
As an early childhood teacher I’d like to see more zebra crossings and improved safety on our roads, particularly around child care centres, parks and primary schools.
In its draft format, the plan reiterates what the local community has told us is important, driven through conversations over the past 18 months. But unless you’ve been part of those conversations, your priorities and your vision for the future of the region might be missing.
It’s a long-term plan that the NSW Government requires every council to produce in collaboration with their communities. The Community Strategic Plan documents what we as a local community aspire to achieve, what’s important to us, and how we want our region to grow and evolve over time. It also guides Council’s delivery program and operational plan - so having your say now will impact the activities we undertake in the future.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a computer whizz or not, if you prefer snail-mail to email, or if you’d like to record your vision for the future as a poem... however you decide to take part, we’ll welcome your input.
I love where I live... the climate, the beaches, and the laid back lifestyle. I’d be disappointed if the area became too over-populated or our parks, rural areas and coastlines were over-developed.
If you don’t tell us, we won’t know
These are just some of the things we’ve been told since the draft plan has been open for feedback. Family, education, lifestyle, environment, business, sport, employment.... what are the things that matter most about your life in the MidCoast?
Take our online survey This 15 minute survey steps you through the draft plan and asks what you think

Here’s how you can have your say
I run my own small business so connectivity and access to services and opportunities equal to those offered in metro areas is crucial to help my business compete.
But what’s a Community Strategic Plan anyway?
Whether you’re studying, in the workforce, retired or unemployed, a single-person household or a family of ten, your opinions matter. We want to capture the needs, wants and desires of people from all areas of the region, from all walks of life, and all age groups. Now’s the time to have your say.

Lions Youth Award for Jordan Tumes
q YOUTH OF THE YEAR AWARD: Carol Wills, Jordan Tumes, Casey Connell and Stan Backhouse. By Margie TIERNEY
OPINION
IT’S been a busy start to the year for the Lions and Lioness Clubs of Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest. After a very successful Australia Day Breakfast at Moira Parade Park, the Clubs held their local ‘Youth Of the Year’ dinner
last week. The judging panel of Carol Wills, Casey Connell and Stan Backhouse were pleased to award Tea Gardens local youth Jordan Tumes with the Club Final and Public Speaking Certificates after his interview and public speaking performance on
the night. The judges were impressed at the interview by Jordan’s leadership, personality and general knowledge skills and his sporting and community involvement. In his two impromptu speeches, the Year 11 student from Medowie Christian School spoke on Global Warming and the legal drinking age. He then gave an entertaining outline of ‘Black Holes’ in his five minute prepared speech. Jordan told the dinner, “Thanks to the Lions Club for giving me the opportunity to be involved in the program it has been a great experience.” Lions Club President John Hughes said, “Jordan is a very impressive young man who is always up for a challenge. “When I asked Jordan if he would like to be in the program he did not hesitate to say ‘Yes, what do I have to do?” Jordan now goes on to represent the Tea Gardens Clubs in the Zone final at Raymond Terrace on Saturday 17 February.

A Chest of Funds By John SAHYOUN THREE community groups received a funding injection last month thanks to a donation from Bulahdelah IGA. The Bulahdelah Lions Club, Show Society and Junior Cricket Club each received a share of more than $1,000 raised through the Community Chest program. Store Manager Jenny Glynn said customers play a key role in the program, with funds from speciallymarked ‘Community Chest’ products pooled to provide
the grants. “Every time someone buys one of these speciallymarked products we get a portion back in our chest which we donate to the community,” she said. The Lions Club will be using the donation for equipment for the Mountain Park and the Show Society will utilise the grant to make improvements to facilities at the showground. Cricket Club Team Manager Erin Matheson said their share of funding will be used to purchase a gazebo to help protect the young players from the sun.
The recipients of the funding grants were selected by the store, ensuring the money raised locally stays within the community. “We are pleased to be able to assist so many worthy community groups,” Jenny said. “The amount of money raised varies each year, but we always feel good about giving back to the community.” Each the organisations were presented with cheques last week and thanked the Bulahdelah IGA for their generosity.
KEEP your receipts and check your shop-a-dockets, because they can now be quite valuable. R & R Property has begun a competition to get students at a wide selection of schools to collect their dockets displaying the R & R ad, and hand them into the office. The participating schools so far are; Medowie
Christian School, Raymond Terrace Public School, Grahamstown Primary School, Mount Kanwary Primary, Karuah Primary, Booral Primary Stroud Primary and Stroud Road Primary Principal of R & R Property, Denise Haynes told News Of The Area, “We chose to help the schools because we know that they are
always struggling financially and sometimes that can fall back onto the parents.” “The Collect and Win campaign is just another way for us to give support to the community.” Participating schools are in the running to win $1000 from R & R Property. They can spend this on educational and sporting equipment of their choice. Denise said, “I’ve

The first participating school to collect 200 of our advertisements and to notify us will be the winners of the $1000. You can check if your school is participating on www.collectandwin.com. au.

Snake moves in on Tournament By Bob MACKLINSHAW OH What a Week it Was! Under the auspices of the New South Wales Veteran Golf Association, the Myall Coast Veteran Golfers Club hosted for the eighteenth time, the biggest single course veteran’s week of golf in Australia at Hawks Nest Golf Club during the first week of February, 2018. George and Barbara Young Lee, together with Gordon and Maria Mather have played every tournament since its’ inception, with Maria celebrating her last 18 birthdays at the event. With 292 veteran golfers from 75 clubs, from Albury in the south, Warren in the West, to Townsville in the north, it was, by all accounts, a hugely successful tournament from a number of perspectives and this is exemplified by the request
for 323 entry forms already for the 2019 tournament. The major event winners were: NSWVGA Mens Nett: John Moore from Everglades GC with 78pts, runner-up Tony Mulhearn from Gordon GC with 77pts, and third was Col Northey from Sth West Rocks CC with 76pts. In the ladies’ section Robyn Baldwin from Howlong GC was the winner with 83pts, from Lea Robinson of Balgowlah GC with 79pts and third was Britta Lamborn from Wakehurst GC with 77pts. Golfers gifted with the best combination of skill and luck (without handicaps) received the scratch trophies: Rob Toby from Belmont GC and Diane Wolfe from Albury GC. The purple mug encouragement recipients were Maria Jones of Shelly Beach GC and Alan Barsley from Belmont GC. Apart from the
magnificent golfing weather with which we were blessed, there were many noteworthy highlights, chief among them was the pristine condition in which the course was presented for play by the course crew, led by the course Superintendent Ben Mills. In challenging weather conditions leading in to the week, including closure of the course two days before the event, owing to a deluge of rain, which severely damaged most of the bunkers, the course was presented for play in the best condition anyone has ever seen it. Matching Ben’s effort was the Head Chef Kerry “Kezza” Sloggett’s performance. Hired the week before the tournament to take over the role and confronted with the daunting task of serving a three-course meal to 330 attendees at the presentation dinner

newsofthearea.com.au with a menu prepared by her predecessor, it was an outstanding performance. The timeliness of delivery, quality and food choices, resulted exceptional positive feedback from the golfers. A fantastic job by the kitchen crew! Everyone associated with the conduct of this tournament went to extraordinary lengths to ensure the success of the tournament. We are indebted to the bar staff, admin and pro-shop personnel for their commitment and performance. Zac Leach deserves a special mention for his unflappable, courteous and dogged effort from daylight to dusk in his first vets’ week with us. Special mention must be made of the startling performance of “Fred” the huge brown snake who popped in and out of the bushes on the sixth, somewhat curious about the substantial numbers passing his habitat. A critical success factor for the tournament was the contribution from an army of volunteers. A superb effort by everyone who pitched in. By Linda RICHARDS Tea Gardens Women’s Bowls
PENNANT Season is in full swing, unfortunately, there is not much to report on the social scene of bowls. On Tuesday 6th February our Grade 2 Pennant Teams bowled “at home” against Soldiers Point (Blue). The result here was a win and a loss for our side gaining 1 point overall. The Soldiers Point team gained 4 points. The story was the same for our Grade 4 ladies bowling at Stockton also adding just 1 point to their overall score and giving Stockton(Blue) 4 points. A few ladies presented

for social bowls but numbers just enough for a “roll up”. Thursday 8th February, great results from the Pennant games for our teams. The Grade 4 v Soldiers Point (Blue) at home gained 5 points by winning in both games. Elizabeth Kelly’s side went from having a lead of eight in the early stages of the game, to being down by eight shots, then 20 all on the 18th end. Finally winning by 5 shots 20 v 25. Either it was good bowling or luck was on our side. With two more games to be played our Grade 4 side has taken the lead in their Section. Our Grade 2 teams both had victories against
the Lemon Tree Passage bowlers also adding 5 points to their overall tally. They are placed 3rd in their section, still with a chance of making the Post Sectional Final. We are still hoping to bring home a Pennant Flag this season. No social bowls played. Birthday greetings to Bette Saillard. Thanks to all who have helped out selling raffle tickets, preparing morning teas, Umpiring and acting as the Controlling Body. You have all been amazing your hard work does not go unnoticed. Quarterly meeting to be held on the 20 February following bowls.

Murphy’s role has been boosted by pledged support from Ryan Saunders, who Secretary Neil Reynolds still maintains the game turning try he scored in the 2009 grand final is still the best he has seen in all formats of rugby league. “Saunders will play a key role in the Clubs fortunes”. The Hawks have players coming out of retirement, along with young guns stepping up. They are backed up by a number of experienced personnel that will stay with the Club. Training Tuesday from 6pm
at Myall Park The Lady Hawks, are in the same area as the Hawks, and will be in a rebuild mode. The team will be in “B” grade this year, and any ladies from 14 years + are urged to attend training. Coach and support staff are yet to be confirmed. A final sign up day is planned. The return of the Tea Gardens Hotel as Major Sponsor will add to the back to basics season. The Club is working with the Pub to support the Hawks, after a 10 year hiatus. The Lady Hawks will also be supported in the sponsorship. The Pub is supporting an NRL tipping competition, as well as a number of planned events.

Nominated Fours BOWLING
Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 7 February Unlike last week when bowls were washed-out, today’s sunny weather attracted 53 bowlers for the Nominated Fours competition. At the end of proceedings, five teams were unbeaten on 55 points and the judges needed a three-way countback to decide the winning team. Just sneaking over the line was the triples team of; Ross Barry, Peter King and Danny Johnson. 9 February The great bowling weather continued today for the Friday Open Pairs competition. There were two games of Pairs and one game of Triples. Two games finished on 29 points and the winners on 32 points was the Triples combination of: Bette
Saillard, David Ransome and Dennis Wilberforce. 11 February Sunday Mixed Bowls enjoyed the company of the Stockton travelling bowlers today. It was a very successful day with both greens being used to accommodate 68 bowlers including many Tea Gardens players who came along to support the event. The organisers appreciated the efforts of Ron Webster and John Atherton, who did the cooking, and the many lady helpers who ensured that the day was a winner. Following the morning festivities, the much awaited final of the Club Minor Singles Championship was played with undoubtedly the two best players rising to the top and facing off for the title. Both Ross Barry and Neil Kibble are both experienced draw bowlers and the final was a great example of their craft. The match was to run over 36 ends and at the 11th end, Neil had his nose in front.

Junior League Myall River Junior Rugby League By Neil REYNOLDS THE Myall River Juniors are in preparation mode for 2018. To date the Club has players and support to form one, and possibly two 6 and under sides. Mel Petfield has organised players, and will coach a side. Interest in the age group may see the formation of a second team. A 10 year and under side will continue into their 4th year of competition. Early training has seen a number of committed players, but
more players would be welcome. A 16’s or 17 side will be formed under the guidance of Greg Cotterill. There is still a possibility of forming an 8 and under, a 12 and under, and 14 and under teams, however interest is not high. Players and persons interested in forming sides are encouraged to attend training nights at Myall Park from 5:30pm on Tuesdays. There will be trials arranged prior to Easter, with competition staring in April. Secretary Neil Reynolds commented, “the Myall River Club, was formed 12 years ago by a group of

Local Writer Wins Award By Margie TIERNEY
WE’RE a creative lot in the Myall, from the members of the Art and Craft Centre, to the Galleries in the Gardens Group to the U3A, and let’s not forget the writers within our midst. Hawks Nest local Phillip Everett has just been awarded first prize in the 2017 Rolf Boldrewood Literary Award for Prose for his entry, ‘Old Woman Crazy with the Snakes’. “I’ve always been interested in indigenous peoples and keen on the American Indian to the extent friends would say I’ve got the biggest library of Indian subject books in Australia and also Aboriginal and Polynesian cultures.” Phillip’s tale tells the story of an old woman, the death of her husband in dubious circumstances and the dreams that beset her. Judges of the Boldrewood awards said of his entry, “From the first sentence, we are immersed in the magic dreamworld of a nameless protagonist, doing her best to cope in a rural environment that is once seductive and threatening.”
Phillip who began his life as a public servant, left the world of government behind to concentrate on his writing and personal growth back in the 1980’s. The Boldrewood Competition is linked to the Macquarie Regional Library but attracts entries from around the world. Phillip began writing poetry at school but surprisingly was not encouraged by his father who was the deputy head at his local primary. q LITERARY 1ST PRIZE: Phillip Everett.
“He was into Maths and Science,” Phillip said. He first submitted his story ‘Old Woman Crazy with the Snakes’ to the Boldrewoods a few years back. It wasn’t recognised then, but after what Phillip described as some ‘composting’ he sent it in again late last year. He’s now submitted four more stories to the Newcastle Short Story Awards. Winners will be announced in April at the Writers Festival. “I think I get my greatest satisfaction from writing,”
Mr JU, It is easy to get distracted. Back in the day when we worked from home and used word processors, our distractions were perhaps clouds flitting across the sky, or a magpie warbling, or the postie delivering our mail. Now, the Internet has changed things. Say, during your morning tea break, you decide to check what is going on in your friends’ lives. You scroll through and someone likes a memory of your kids and they send you a message about the time you dined together in Austria. You ‘like’ this message, but that seems dismissive, so you write a couple of sentences about the amazing schnitzels. You add an emoji, then another, and another. They respond with another message. You give them the ‘thumbs up’ emoji which means, the conversation is over. They give you a ‘thumbs up’ emoji and you realise you should send them a link about Internet protocol. You are about to log off, when you spot a video of a guy using a device called a Beard Bro, and even though you don’t have a beard or a bro, you decide to watch it. Now your tea is cold. Next your eyes swivel to an adorable video of a panda eating a carrot. You watch it twice. It’s very cute. You think about how much you’d like to own a panda. Knowing that is impossible, you think about how much you’d like to eat a carrot. You head to the fridge. Just above the carrots is half a Tiramisu. You take a spoonful. Then another. You take the whole packet out of the fridge and eat straight from the container (you can do that when you don’t have work colleagues). Returning to the Internet, you look up diets for people who eat Tiramisu when they should be eating carrots. Instead you come across a video of a man trying to teach his Labrador pup how to walk down stairs. You think about how much you’d like a Labrador. You feel bad about having these thoughts when your faithful cattle dog is at your feet. You take him for a walk. Mr JU, I think you should work in the library. Or disconnect your Internet. Or get a job as a teacher or a nurse or a paramedic. They don’t have time for this nonsense. Carpe diem, Jasminda

KICKING back and relaxing on a Sunday afternoon at the hidden gem ‘Anna Bay Tavern’ sounds pretty good at the best of times.
But when you add the soulful sounds of renowned local artist Kylie Jane, your afternoon couldn’t get much better. Kylie first came to prominence on the hit
Channel 9 show ‘The Voice’ back in 2016. During the blind audition stage, Kylie proved that she knows how to silence a crowd, as well as get the big names in the Judges’ chairs to

take notice, with her unique talent. Since then, Kylie has gone on to perform countless shows at venues all over the Port Stephens region, impressing thousands with her ability to perform any song and make it her own.

Kylie has also taken to the studio to record a new album “Black Swan” which is available at all her shows as well as online. Some call her Pop, some call her Country, others hear Soul and Blues. “I draw inspiration from Country and Soul which I have added to the Pop undertones of the record,” Kylie Jane told
News Of The Area. “So, my sound really is a mixture of them all and hopefully it’s a sound that people will want to hear more of.” So, if you enjoy quality music in a relaxed setting, the scene is set for you this Sunday 18 February at the Anna Bay Tavern from 3pm.
