Myall Quays Newsagency closing its doors FROM Page 1 Myall Quays Newsagency. “We’ve been in the newsagency business for 18 years in Tea Gardens, 14 years in this shop in Myall Quays,” Glenn Cookson said. The Cooksons, Col and wife Sandra along with son Glenn have lived in the area for 40 years and have seen a lot of changes in that time.

“We’re well and truly passed our used-bydate,” Col Cookson said with a laugh. After so many years working seven days a week and getting up at 4am, retirement’s going to be a big change for Newsagency owners Col and Sandra. “We’re just going to sit and get our brain into gear, it’s been a big commitment for all those years,” Col said.

“But we’re going to miss the people,” Col added, “One lady now brings in her grandchild and I remember her when she was just a child.” “The customers are not just customers, they’re our friends,” Sandra said. Son, Glenn is going to start up his own business, window cleaning and lawn mowing, happy to be getting to work outside.

As for Sandra, “I’m going to party. We’re happy to be retiring but a bit sad as well, we’ll miss everyone.” Hugo’s Newsagency at Hawks Nest will be taking over the deliveries, while the Bakery at Myall Quays will still be selling the newspapers and BT’s Fashion is taking over the lotteries.

Remembrance Day - 100 years By Margie TIERNEY

IT was as if those who had made the ultimate sacrifice were smiling down from clear blue skies last Sunday, watching over the hundreds gathered on the banks of the beautiful Myall River to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice. School children proudly marched alongside veterans, the strong and the frail, the very young and the elderly, coming together in a show of force that would not have been possible had it not been for the great sacrifices made by so many, over

a century ago. Members of the Karuah and Tea Gardens RSL Sub branches had spent many months preparing for the important milestone and the community responded in kind to mark Remembrance Day, 2018. School children from all over the district had also planted a sea of crosses in the shape of a poppy. In his keynote address, Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair told the gathering, “It is hard for us today to realise the extent of the carnage that occurred during the Great War.”

“Over 8 million soldiers were killed in what quickly became a war of attrition,” he said. He went on to speak about Australia’s involvement in the Great War. More than 60 thousand Australian lives were lost, a staggering 68 percent of the half million soldiers who served were either killed or wounded. “We lost more men in just ten minutes in some of the battles in World War One than we lost in 10 more recent years in Afghanistan,” Rear Admiral Sinclair said. The former Governor of NSW went on to pay tribute to all

those who served in the wars that followed, World War Two, Korea, Malaya, Vietnam, and the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. “The men and women that we honour and remember here today,” he said, “gave us a precious gift of freedom.” “We honour their courage, loyalty and mateship, which takes friendship to a higher plain.” He concluded, “If we can carry that torch of freedom into the future then their sacrifice for us will not be in vain.” In the peaceful township of Tea Gardens, at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, we Remembered them.

Christmas Tree Appeal By Margie TIERNEY

THE Christmas Spirit is alive and well at the Myall Art and Craft Centre, with the group collecting gift donations for its annual Salvation Army Appeal. “The Christmas Giving Tree we have at the Centre is for the Salvation Army which distributes the gifts to local families in need,” Janette Coppock told News Of The Area. “Any form of gift, for all ages would be appreciated.” “They don’t need to be wrapped, just dropped into the Centre any day between 10am and 4pm.” Donations can be made up until Thursday 6 December. It’s been a busy time for the Art and Craft centre members, who recently held their annual Open Day to

“There are several long term members able to assist any new members wishing to have a go.” “Whether it be turning a wooden bowl or doing a few ‘handyman jobs’ everyone is welcome.” “The wood turning group already has a few ladies exploring the art of woodturning,” Ms Coppock said.

Christmas Lunch Controversy By Margie TIERNEY

OUR story last week on the cancellation of the Community Christmas Day lunch in the Tea Gardens Masonic Hall sparked plenty of reaction around town and on social media. It also led to a meeting between News Of The Area and a group of former members of the Port Stephens Masonic Lodge. “The demise and closure of our well respected and active local Port Stephens Lodge in Tea Gardens has been orchestrated by the Grand Lodge of NSW in Sydney,” Juergen Seil told News Of The Area.

Long time members of the Tea Gardens Freemasons said they didn’t want to go public, but the issue of the Christmas Community lunch was the final straw. “We’ve had 32 local members resign, our name has been sullied around town and we want to clear the air,” one of the former members said. “The decision not to allow Sue Douglas to hold her traditional Christmas Day Community lunch in the Masonic Hall was made by Sydney, not but us.” The Freemasons first formed a group in Tea Gardens way back in 1924. At the meeting with

News Of The Area last week, there were six former members, some with more than 40 years with the Freemasons. They said they were as bitterly disappointed as Sue Douglas was, that they could no longer offer her the Masonic Hall for her community lunch as they had done for the past 16 years. “It’s Sydney Grand Lodge, it’s being run along corporate lines now,” said another former member. “They’ve lost sight that in small country towns it’s all about helping the community, from financially supporting school students, to offering our facilities to anyone who needs them. “We’ve been accused of being too generous.” News Of The Area spoke

“I met with Karuah police late in 2017 about the need for a permanent police building.” “Initial design concepts for the future station will be ready in early 2019,” she said. Port Stephens Liberal candidate Jaimie Abbott

Pearls donation to CWA

By Margie TIERNEY

OUR Farmers to the west have received another much needed donation following the hard work of the ‘Pearls’ at this year’s Myall River

Festival. The ‘Pearls’ were the gems behind the ‘Buy My Wardrobe’ event at last month’s Festival, their efforts raising $3,200 from the sale of donated clothing.

A delegation headed to the Country Women’s Association Hunter Area Annual Conference in Newcastle recently to hand over their cheque. “There were about 150

members at the conference at Bar Beach in Newcastle,” Mother of Pearl’s Kathy Gillespie said. “We handed over our donation of $3,200 to the Country Women’s Disaster Relief Committee President, Tanya Cameron.” “We’d also like to make special mention to Margarete Lethorn who also donated $200 from sales of horse shoes to the festival goers.” The CWA has now donated more than $3million dollars to families toughing it out in the drought. Funding goes to help with household needs such as groceries, clothes, school items and medications. Every cent donated to the CWA goes directly to families, with no administrative costs. Kathy Gillespie said, “I’d like to say well done to all the Pearls, especially Kerry Patterson for working tirelessly to ensure it all ran smoothly at the festival.” Hopefully they’ll be back to do it all again next year.

Dear Jasminda,

II work at a busy café and I can’t understand how rude some customers are. People try to change what’s on the menu, ask where their drinks are when I’m already balancing three plates and lots of other annoying things.

Miss GK, Soldiers Point Dear Miss GK, I THINK the problem is a lack of training. You know when you get a job in hospitality, they put you through training modules so you are a competent employee? Well this should be a two-way street. Before being allowed to step foot in a restaurant, café or pub, you should have to pass Responsible Food and Beverage Behaviour training. I can see a Competent/Not Yet Competent checklist with general behaviour modules followed by more specific training in things like: Slips, Trips and Falls: Knowing when it’s time to call a taxi; Cash Handling: Learn how to tip, you tight moron; Process Reservations: Don’t move ‘Reserved Signs’, you selfish twit; Maintain the quality of perishable items: Leave your baby at home, and so on. Imagine all the money Registered Training Organisations would make running this new course for every member of the adult population. Our cafes would be full of well-behaved customers and hospitality would be seen as a desirable career pathway, not an opportunity to be harassed, abused and run off your feet by uncouth members of the public who should know better. Only people with a special ‘I’m polite’ card, sort of like an Opal Card would be allowed access, there could be a demerit system for lapses in behaviour and exemplary customers could be issued with a rewards card offering free beverages.. Solved! Carpe diem. Jasminda.

First meet for Swim Club STROUD Seals Swim Club held their first Swim Club Meet after a break of nearly four years of inactivity. A group of enthusiastic swimmers, assisted by past committee members Ian and Davina Lathwell have managed to reactivate the club which is now once again registered with Swimming NSW. The Club is committed to providing a Swim Club meet each month at Stroud Community Swimming Pool. The Stroud Seals also have a number of competitive swimmers who train at Lakeside Leisure Centre all year round. These swimmers regularly compete at local, regional and State carnivals. The next carnival for

the Seals is the North Coast Regional Swimming Championships at Coffs Harbour. A number of swimmers are competing to achieve times at various levels from Country to National qualifying times. The Club held its first Meet on Sunday 28 Oct 18 on a rather grim spring day. However, the meteorological conditions could not dampen the enthusiasm of a group of about 40 swimmers, parents and officials. The Club Coach and President, Michael Abel, organised and ran an hour long coaching session with the assistance of junior coach Tim Tatchell (19). The coaching was well

attended and is provided free to all Swimming Club members before each meet. The Swim Club Meet was conducted after the coaching session, and contained a mixture of fun events as well as more serious events. The focus is on encouraging participation and learning the rules of competitive swimming in a supportive and enjoyable environment. Many of the older competitive swimmers were present to provide examples and assist with the running of the event. The swimmers ranged in age from some of the parents, just a bit over 30 years in age down to smaller swimmers known as Junior Dolphins, which mean they are under seven years of age and also swim for free as

there is no cost for a Junior Dolphin Swimmer. President Michael Abel has a focus on encouraging senior swimmers to ‘give back’ to the club and provide mentoring and example to younger swimmers on how to behave and have fun in a competitive environment. Belonging to the Club means swimmers are part of a team and the monthly Swim Club Meet allows swimmers to meet and interact socially and learn new skills all at the same time. James Newall, assistant coach and a State Open swimmer, also attended the Club Meet to assist with the organisation. James is a Physiotherapy student at Newcastle University, and is running swimming coaching lessons every Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning until the end of January to teach children through the Junior Dophins program. James can be contacted on james@awstructures. com.au. The next Swim Club meet is scheduled for 18 November, 2018 and all interested are most welcome to attend.

Rose Bowl Trophy

q Robyn Beaumont and Kayelene Pearson Holding the Rose Bowl Trophy. Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS DUE to the running of the Melbourne Cup, no bowls were played on Tuesday 6th November. On Thursday 8th November the semi final of the Novice Consistency Competition was played. Social bowlers decided not to play due to the weather. The temperature was 17 degrees Celsius (felt like 12 degrees), showers and very windy conditions. The winds were SSW with gusts up to 35km/h. The competitors in the competition bowled well in such adverse conditions. On Rink 2 Jean Glover did battle against Jan Coomer. Jan bowled extremely well for a “new bowler” but Jean was too strong, 153 v 107. On Rink 4 Francis Betar v Bette Saillard. Bette held the lead by 12 shots in the early stages of this contest, but Francis managed to even things up and gained a narrow lead by the 12th end. Then it was neck to neck 40 all, 50 all gradually Francis took control and claimed victory 151 v 119. Great

bowling by all competitors. Jean and Francis will face each other in the final of this event on Tuesday 13th November. Thanks to Bev Dunn and Judi Polak for marking. Prior to play Club President Robyn Webster congratulated Dorothy Thompson on being a member of TGWBC for 30 years and presented her with a Certificate. Birthday greetings to Jo Younghusband. Congratulations to our Newcastle District representative bowlers Kayelene Pearson and Robyn Beaumont. These two ladies bowled in the annual Rose Bowl Competition (NDWBA v Central Coast District), held at Soldiers Point on Friday 9th November. Newcastle had wins on all 7 Rinks, 173 v 104. A fabulous result for NDWBA. Coming events: Thursday 15th November our annual Grange RSL LifeCare day. Thursday 29th November President v Secretary Day. December 3rd Presentation Night. Break Up Day Thursday 6th December.
