SWOOPING

magpies signal spring By Daniel SAHYOUN SWOOPING magpies around the region are a definite sign that spring has arrived. Fourteen-year old Angel Holston warns the aggressive dive-bombing birds are out and about after coping a blow to the head in Booral’s Lowes Lane last week. “I was riding my bike along the lane when a magpie swooped down from behind and got me in

the side of my head,” Angel said. “I screamed and started pedalling faster to get out of the way, but it circled around squawking and came at me again. I was bit scared so I jumped in the bush and stayed there until the magpie flew away.” Angel told News Of The Area she now cautiously rides along the outer edge of the lane to avoid another encounter with the angry bird. The arrival of spring and the swooping magpies has CONTINUED Page 2

Frequently riding along bush tracks in Bulahdelah, nine-year old Cole Buchanan said he needs to be prepared. “I watched a video that said putting cable ties on your bike helmet will stop the magpies swooping you,” Cole said. “Some friends told me that the magpies will still swoop, but the cable ties will keep the birds high enough above your

head to prevent a serious injury.” President of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), Dr Robert Johnson, said magpies become aggressive during breeding season from late August to early October. “Fast moving objects such as people and bikes and anyone who moves directly towards their nests are perceived as threats and are likely to be swooped. Dog walkers and toddlers in prams are also a common target,” Dr Johnson said. “Tolerance is the best policy, we need to appreciate that some magpies will defend their territory from intruders

Local, Sean McKeough drove the tourists’ car off the beach after second bog.

Recovery expert, Darren Rapley has been pulling vehicles out of the sands for more than 20 years. “I’d average between 40 and 50 rescues a year,” said Darren. “In one week I pulled 6 vehicles out. I’ve even had to recovery a light plane after it made an emergency landing.”

Mr Rapley said that one of the main things to remember is to let your tyres well down before you go driving in the sand. “Automatic cars also tend to bog more easily,” said Darren. “Follow the tracks made by other 4 wheel drivers and avoid going to near the water.”

Dr Keniry said he will be reporting back to the Government in late September on his discussions with the industry. GREYHOUND Transition Taskforce Coordinator Dr John Keniry meet with owners and trainers in Taree last week to inform of a transition package he is developing for the NSW Government. Local greyhound owner and breeder Debbie Robinson said the reaction to the transitioning has been mixed.

“Some people are just pretending the ban doesn’t exist and are carrying on regardless, and some are still just trying to race,” she said. “There are others who have started downsizing and are putting their greyhounds up for adoption. The official adoption channel for greyhounds has obviously been very busy since the ban was announced.” Ms Robinson told News Of

The Area the greyhound race meet held in Taree last weekend was the first at the club since the Baird government announced the ban. It has been reported that greyhound racing was halted at the club while compliance checks were carried out at every track in NSW. Dr Keniry, who was appointed by the NSW Government last month, said the government had committed to a raft of measures to assist the industry transition. “Since my appointment, I have had many conversations with people working directly or indirectly in the greyhound industry about the challenges they are facing due to the closure of greyhound racing on 1 July,

Everyone who drives on the beach needs a special permit which can be obtained from the local Newsagencies in Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens. The Midcoast Council webpage “Beach Vehicle Permit Site”also has the do’s & don’ts when it comes to beach driving. 2017,” Dr Keniry said. “As well as offering financial assistance to transition dogs and people out of the greyhound industry, other government and non-government support services will be provided, such as training programs and business advice.” Dr Keniry said he will be reporting back to the Government in late September on his discussions with the industry. “The government will then decide what assistance will be available to people affected by the closure,” he said. The taskforce has set up a free confidential counselling service to assist people feeling distressed about the closure of the industry. WITH the school holidays looming and Spring in the air, it’s a great time to go beach driving on the glorious sands of Hawks Nest. But as one couple found out on the weekend, a drive on the beach can also be full of pitfalls. The overseas tourists, became bogged not once, but twice. The first time around, locals stopped to help the couple who had no idea how to solve their predicament. A tow got them free and all seemed well. Just to be on the safe side, their local rescue team waited at the Mungo Brush to ensure they made it off the beach safely, as it was almost nightfall. “Everyone should have a beach recovery kit on board and knowledge of the area,” good samaritan Sean McKeough told the News Of The Area. When the tourists failed to appear, sure enough they were stuck knee deep again. This time Mr McKeough drove the tourists’ car off the beach and there were hugs all round. Hawks Nest local and Beach

Nan Syron Bridge

q ADMIRED AND RESPECTED: Nan Syron. By Daniel SAHYOUN THE bridge over the Myall River on Bulahdelah Way will now officially be known as the Nan Syron Bridge. The name change was approved at last month’s MidCoast Council meeting and honours well-known and respected local Aboriginal woman, Nan Syron.

Son Dennis, said Nan was treasured by everyone who knew her. “Nan was a much loved and popular member of the community and she was admired by everyone,” Mr Syron said. “We thought having the bridge renamed after her was a fitting tribute for such a loving person.” Mr Syron said the Nan Syron Bridge will also honour the proud Aboriginal Heritage of the local area. The process to rename the bridge started last year with a petition presented to Great Lakes Council by Len Roberts. Mr Syron said 140 people had signed the petition in support of renaming the bridge. “The local community were very supportive of the proposed name change,” Mr Syron said. “They all said it was a fitting tribute to Nan.” Eileen Syron, who was affectionately known as Nan Syron to both her family and community, was born in Stroud in 1911.

Ride organiser, Jody McLucas travelled as support crew for the cyclists. “No matter where we stopped, someone would come up to us with a story about themselves or a friend or loved one who’d benefited from the Ronald McDonald Houses,” she said. Buckets of funds needed for Bucketts Way By Daniel SAHYOUN THERE are new calls for the State Government to allocate funds to the Bucketts Way after the road has once again missed out on backing from the Fixing Country Roads program. The funding is needed for priority safety upgrades, including overtaking lanes and resurfacing along the notorious stretch of road which is now considered one of the worst in the State. Dorothea Wellens lived on

the Bucketts Way for 10 years and fears more lives will be lost while waiting for the upgrades to commence. “It’s narrow single lanes all the way and there are only a few spots to overtake, and there is always oncoming traffic,” she said. “The road deteriorates rapidly around Limeburners. I panic every time I see a milk truck on the bridges, the trucks are forced to drive in the middle of the road because it’s so narrow.” Ms Wellens told News Of

The Area the road becomes even more dangerous during holiday periods. “The traffic banks up and frustration causes drivers to take risks, we’ve had cars come through our fence and there have been a number of fatalities out the front of our home,” she said. Showing a united front, the funding application for the upgrades was a joint effort between MidCoast Council (formerly Gloucester Shire and Great Lakes Councils) and Port Stephens Council.

left Newcastle and travelled through the Barrington Tops before stopping in Bulahdelah overnight, and raised more than $8,000 along the way. Regional Manager Victor Shiel, said the Bash isn’t a race, it’s just all about having fun.

“We have people dress up and decorate cars because we want to show the public what we do, and this is always a good way of raising funds for people in need,” Mr Shiel said. “We also have a bit of fun exploring regional Australia while we’re at it, it’s really

A long term plan in five stages was also developed by the councils with the focus on improving safety. Stage One of the Upgrade Program, commencing with two passing lanes at Limeburners Creek and a further one at Weismantels, is shovel ready. Councils have offered a cash and in kind component to the work, but need to secure State Government funding in order to get the priority program started. The Labor Party said the

three passing lanes could be constructed for just over $6 million, which is a fraction of the funding that the Nationals have directed towards building a road tunnel in the inner suburbs of Sydney. Port Stephens MP Kate Washington and Upper Hunter MCL Mick Veitch inspected sections of the Bucketts Way last week. “Councils and the community have done all the hard work and presented a proposal to build a better Bucketts Way – all we need

is the State Government to do their part,” Ms Washington said. “They are spending billions of dollars on roads in Sydney – but cannot see their way into providing money to fund basic improvements to the Bucketts Way. This is a critical stretch of road that’s become notorious for all the wrong reasons,” Ms Washington said. The planned upgrades would improve safety and also support the tourism, forestry and dairy industries that rely on the road.

success. In exchange for supplying the books, the Club donated a percentage of the proceeds of the sale to the Library, which, over the years has amounted to a total of $6,000.00. These funds have been utilised to improve and extend their facilities and amenities at the Library. Other Community organisations to receive support over the years from the Rotary Club are The Tea Gardens Community Technology Centre (CTC), The Clinic Bus, HN/TG Respite Centre, HN/TG Soccer Club, HN/TG Toy Library, Riding for the Disabled, TG/HN Red Cross, Tea Gardens Mens Shed and Tea Gardens U3A.

The Meals on Wheels (MOW) Community support organisation is staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers supplying meals to those unable to cook for themselves or simply require a break from cooking. Preparing the meals is almost a full-time job and requires modern kitchen facilities. The constant task of keeping this equipment upto-date is one that requires energetic fundraising. Rotary is very pleased to have been able to donate nearly $6,000.00 to MOW to purchase new cooking and refrigeration equipment.

Rotary helping everywhere they can By Ian MACKENZIE-SMITH THE annual Rotary Easter Book Sale has, since its inception, relied on donations of books from the local community. Ol’ Friends Catch Up everyone gets together is at a funeral, so we thought that it would be nice to catch-up in happier circumstances,” Mrs Worth said. Eight of the old friends celebrated their 80th birthdays this year and Les Morgan turned 90. Mrs Worth said the get

together allowed everyone to celebrate together. The friends celebrating their birthdays talked about their younger days and said it felt like only yesterday when they were all playing together in the streets. Mrs Worth told News Of The Area the highlight of the day was simply being able to catch up with friends. “It was great to get together with everyone,

especially people who we hadn’t seen since the last one,” Mrs Worth said. “We’ve all been able to catch up and find out what we’ve missed in each other’s lives.” The reunion has now been held four times and Mrs Worth said all the old friends were definitely looking forward to the next one.

Local historian David’s presentation concentrated on the life of Sir Edward Parry who became Commissioner of the Australian Agricultural Company based at Tahlee in the 1830’s. Parry had been an eminent naval officer and Arctic explorer before taking up the reins of the AA Company. His work established the company as a profitable

enterprise in agriculture, mining and trading. David outlined Parry’s early interest in steam power in boats and mentioned the fact that Parry was responsible for the building of The Karuah, the first steam powered boat to be built in Port Stephens. The subject of steampowered boats was then taken up by Karuah motor mechanic and engineer Tony King. Tony explored his own construction of steam engines and steam powered boats and in particular his building of the modern-day steam launch The Karuah. The large audience enjoyed the lively presentations.

Opinion

newsofthearea.com.au

Appalled at the stupidity OPINION Dear News Of The Area, I, ALONG with the majority of local residents, am appalled at the stupidity of the main protagonists and supporters for the removal of the beautiful, iconic Coral Trees along the Tea Gardens foreshore. These trees made Tea Gardens waterfront unique and gave it colour where almost everywhere else is bland and featureless. This matter has been discussed in the public arena for several years now and just about every excuse given by a certain Councillor and other so called experts in the community, have been proven to be wrong. The trees were supposed to be dangerous and would drop their branches, possibly injuring members of the public. I have lived here for over seventeen years and not one branch has dropped. The last serious storm in

the area during the last twelve months caused widespread damage to just about every tree in Tea Gardens requiring a huge cleanup effort, but the Flame Trees didn’t shed a twig. The pavement works along the foreshore to create a paved car parking area were supposed to have compromised the Coral Tree roots which a Council “Expert” claimed would increase the danger of the trees falling over or dropping branches. The Coral Trees have shown no signs of deterioration or disturbance since the pavement works and we have experienced some very heavy winds in that time. The decision was made to replace the Trees with mature fig trees and two such “shrubs” were planted between one and two years ago. (There is more/all of Mr Littlefair’s Letter on the News Of The Area website.)

Over 60 Lunch Group Dear News Of The Area, THE Over 60 Ladies lunch will be at the new refurbished restaurant at Tea Gardens Bowling Club this month on the 23

September at 12 noon. Please let me know the week before if you can attend. If you are a new lady to the area and would like to join us please come along. My number is 49 979770. Susan Burns

Path is not safe Dear News Of The Area, PART of a letter I posted to the MidCoast Council on the 7 September to the attention of Manager Operations South. Please give the following, serious consideration, concerning the “new” path between Ibis St and the Singing Bridge,Hawks Nest. It is not safe. Cars approach “walkers”, travelling over 80kph, driving over the white line. It remains uneven, sloping towards the right. It has proven an ideal spot to park the campervan to look for koalas! An ideal break

down lane, observed by many locals. Another stretch to do a “u” turn, as happens, more space. Most uncomfortable to walk on, no idea how a stroller is pushed. The path is covered in debris from the above trees. How to clear??? If a “blower” is used, say goodbye to the grey metal. Would this surface and finish be accepted along the prestigious waterfront at Tea Gardens?? I think not. Why should Hawks Nest? It is a disgrace. Denise Dewar, Hawks Nest.

Black Spots Dear News Of The Area, FOR far too long the villages of Pindimar and Bundabah have been suffering from the absence of mobile phone services. There is no signal in most of the area or a weak unusable signal in a few spots. This situation also badly affects the tradespeople working in the villages as well as community services; RFS, SES, Ambulance, Police etc. The villages have been listed on the Federal Government’s “Black Spot” register in order to hopefully obtain funding for the provision of a proper service. We have received written support from Great Lakes Council and the SES. Expressions of support have also been made by the RFS, Police and Ambulance services. Our Federal Member, Dr David Gillespie firmly

supports our actions and support has also been expressed by Councillor McCaskie. In order to fully prosecute our case I now seek written support from the tradespeople who work in our villages and are also badly affected by the present situation. A letter or email with business names and/or logos and addressed to the Community Association is requested. These need be no more than a few sentences expressing support for a proper mobile phone service in our villages along with any expressions of difficulties or costs you may have incurred from the lack of service. These can be emailed to me lshepherd@optusnet. com.au or dropped into my letterbox in Bundabah Rd. Les Shepherd Public Officer Pindimar Bundabah Community Association

Young players tackle Coffs Coast Challenge RECENTLY two of local Junior Rugby Union players took part in the Coffs Coast Rugby Challenge, an annual Rugby event that brings players and teams together from across NSW and QLD. Chris and Murray Woodfield, who usually play for Medowie Rugby, were part of the Hunter Barbarians, or BaaBaas, who are made up of players from across all hunter clubs and are put together to play in each age division from U10s to U16s. It is a fantastic opportunity for kids from rival clubs to come together and form teams and friendships and one of the great things about being part of the Rugby Union family. The Barbarians also use this opportunity to raise

funds for charity every year through Jersey and personal sponsorship, with Kaleidoscope Children’s Charity being this year’s recipient. Mick and John Rumble from Hawks Nest First National Real Estate agreed to be the U15s major sponsor with their new Holiday Hawks Nest logo on the back of the jerseys. The U10s were sponsored by Pork Ewe Deli in Mayfield, owned by Chris and Murray’s Aunt. Their contribution helped the Barbarians reach just over $10000 for Kaleidoscope, the boys were really proud to have a local businesses to promote and would like to thank them very much for their support.

Mixed pairs game

7 SEPTEMBER: Wonderful weather for bowling and 50 players took advantage of the conditions to revel in the Wednesday Nominated triples

played today. Both greens were in use with the grass playing nice and true and at a moderate pace.

Yep! They did it again. The team of Neil Kibble, Col Amos and Dave Rimmer blitzed the field yet again to take home the money. They scored a mammoth +44. They won their first game 17-4 and compounded that in their second winning 19-5. Well done! In second place on a more respectable score of +32 was the team of; Geoff Page, Greg Smith and Noel Jackson. They had a big win in their first game winning 21-2. Ouch! Lucky Losers were; Barry Drayton, Terry Munright and Ron Webster. 9 September: Rain was forecast later in the day and thankfully did not interrupt the Friday Open Jackpot Pairs which was played in near perfect conditions. Fourteen players took part with many saving their form for the RSL LifeCare Mixed Pairs scheduled for the next two days. There were two games of Pairs and one game of 2-

Croese converted to take the score to 18/8 at half time. The second half seemed to start much the same as the first with the Hornets over the line in the first 2mins 14/18. Roos man to watch Josh Page was in and with Sam converting 24/14. The hits were coming hard and fast by the Roos Ben Langdon, Daniel Evans, Aden Callaghan, Ryan Saunders, Jack Croese, Sam Croese, Matt Cameron, Shannon Bills, Mitch O’Bryan, Jake Langdon, Tim Johnson and Dylan Foley. Runners were Matt Croese, Ben Langdon, Dylan Foley, Ryan Saunders, Daniel Evans, Mitch O’Bryan, Tim Johnson, Darren Weatherall, Dwayne Fleming and Matt Cameron.

The Hornets were not going down without a fight they were in with 5mins to full time to take the score to Hinton Hornets 20 Karuah Roos 24. With the last 2mins Hinton were hard at their line but the Roos keep their heads and held them up and out from the try line. The Karuah Roos supporters erupted as the final hooter sounded with the Roos winning the Grand Final for 2016 24/20. The N&HRL Committee members pick the Man of the Match for the 2016 “D”grade grand final as #7 from the Karuah Roos Daniel Evans. The committee congratulate all the boys on a fantastic win and a great

season. The Karuah Roos would also like to the all the Sponsor and Supports for coming to the games if it wasn’t for the support of the town we wouldn’t have been able to do it. A very big thanks you to our FOA William Evans for keeping the boys on the paddock every week and Jack Fleming and Bobby Beetson for making sure the players were well hydrated (with H2O). Thank you to one of our valued sponsors in the Karuah Motor Yacht Club for opening up on Saturday afternoon after the grand final for everyone to come back to and celebrate it was a fantastic night had by all.

bowl Triples played with the winners decided using the formula, 4 points for a win plus ends won. This suited Vic Garlick and Bill Heylbut who romped home. The jackpot was not won and will total $60.00 next week. 10/11 September: Almost on cue the rain ceased just before the commencement of the annual RSL LifeCare Mixed Pairs to be played over 3 games of 10 ends on Saturday and 2 games of 10 ends on Sunday. Sunny conditions prevailed for the weekend and a total of 12 teams contested the prizemoney. Players really received a bargain over the weekend. Where would one get to play in a prizemoney tournament, playing 5 games of 10 ends with lunch on both days thrown in for $20.00? Great value! They say that you need some luck in the draw to win these events, but proving luck had nothing to do with it was

the team of Kerry Faber and Col Amos who out bowled all their opponents winning all 5 of their matches to take first prize and repeat their performance of last year. Well done! Narrowly beaten into second place were the husband and wife team of Robyn and Ron Webster who also won all five of their matches but with a slightly lower margin. R. Beaumont and Ross Barry took third place with four wins. The prizes were very plentiful with just about every player winning something Congratulations to all the competitors and making the tournament so successful. The Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club would like to thank the sponsors, RSL LifeCare for providing the generous prizemoney, Pam Barry and Sue Johnson for the catering and organiser John Younghusband.

The Roos maintained the pressure and a scored another try off the kick by #3 Josh Page which was regathered by #5 Dylan Foley who scored in the corner. With #6 Sam Croese’s boot hitting the ball on the mark to convert both try’s 12/8 Roos way. Great meters were made by Ben Langdon, Luke Chapman, Daniel Evan, Matt Cameron, Aden Callaghan, Matt Croese, Jack Langdon, Josh Page and Darren Weatherall.
