Knights Show Respect By Margie TIERNEY RESPECT was the theme of the day when members of the Newcastle Knights Football Club visited Tea Gardens Primary School last week. Led by Game Development Officer Luke Lawrence, the players addressed a full assembly of children on the values the NRL is campaigning to promote both on the field and off. The Knights 18-yearold Brendan O’Hagan and 20-year-old Keanu Dawson spoke to the children about how important it is to belong to a group, community and

family. ‘’Respectful behaviours are important to ensure people feel welcome and have a sense of belonging and be part of a group,” Luke said. Both Brendan and Keanu spoke candidly about what it takes to become part of a team. 18-year-old Brendan has been with the Knights club since his junior years. “I love doing this stuff,” Brendon told News Of The Area. It’s Keanu’s first season at the Knights, having moved to Australia from New Zealand and the Warriors. “It’s a good change, it’s good to meet different people,” Keanu said. “However the heat is a bit of an issue,” he added with a big smile. The players also demonstrated the team’s many forms of welcome from handshakes, to high fives and hugs. “The handshakes were the best part,” said schoolboy Korben Patteson.

q Nanna Night: Rachael Terry, Karen Flemming, Ruth Butler, Ren Sullivan and Rachel Reitsma. A CRAFTY group of people were in stitches of laughter at the very first Nanna Night held at Bulahdelah Bowling Club last week. The group chatted and shared their yarns accompanied by the click clack of needles as they knitted one, purled two and increased their woollen rows. Others were hooked on crochet, interweaving their yarns into double loops and chains. Organiser Ren Sullivan said the evenings were a laid-back opportunity for people to do something they enjoy. “The purpose is to encourage people to get together with their craft or hobby and work on it in a relaxed social environment,” she said. “It is a great excuse to get out of the house and have a chat with friends and also meet new ones.” People of all ages are welcome to bring along their knitting, needlework, crochet or other crafts to work on during the evening, but you don’t need to be crafty to join the group. “There’s plenty of people willing to

Talents Pooled By Margie TIERNEY GREAT things happen when community organisations join forces. Tea Gardens local Barbara Downing desperately needed a mobility scooter and an access ramp to make a major difference to her day to day life. Enter, the Tea Gardens Lions Club, the Myall Coast Rotary Club and Tea Gardens Men’s Shed. In a friendly spirit of cooperation, the organisations pooled their talents and resources to turn
Barbara’s dream into reality. ‘’Over the years, Barbara and her late husband, Ken, have been very involved in
community works and this was seen as one way that we could show thanks for their contribution,” Lions Club Treasurer, Bart Huthnance said. The Lions Club had the mobility scooter, but it
“I also turn the location services off so no one can track where I am posting from.” Indianna told News Of The Area as an added privacy measure, she uses a nickname created for her accounts instead of revealing her full name online. Nerong teen Khloe Middleton said she is aware of the importance of online safety. “I frequently get friend requests from people I don’t know and when this needed reconditioning. Members of the Men’s Shed came to the rescue, stripped it down and got it back up and running. Then there was the problem of access to Barbara’s house.

happens I just block them so they can’t see anything on my profile,” she said. “I never accept a request or chat online with anyone I don’t know personally.” Children’s eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said we need to be having regular conversations with young people about what is, and is not okay to share online. “We also need to make sure we are modelling the same behaviours in our own social media use,” she said. “The good news is that most young people are using privacy settings, however, education is essential for reinforcing the importance of keeping sensitive information private.” Commissioner Inman Grant said the Office has developed a range of resources to help young people, parents, and the wider community develop skills in using online sites safely and respectfully. The resources can be viewed at: www.esafety. gov.au.
“So Ian Robinson, President of the Men’s Shed and Lions member, proposed that the talented team from the Men’s Shed should construct and install a suitable access ramp,” Rotary Club member Ian Mackenzie Smith said. Rotary then donated $500 to cover the cost of all the necessary building materials. The ramp was duly built and installed by a team led by Des Pagett and Kevin Partridge. Barbara said, “I am just so appreciative of the wonderful work that everyone has done.’’ ‘’It will make such an enormous difference to my ability to get about in my daily life”.

Their property settlement was determined by a judge in 1992 and confirmed on appeal in 1993. No spouse support order was ever made. They had one child together. She lived with the former wife. Child support was paid as assessed, and on time. There were allegations that the former wife persecuted the deceased post separation so as to make his life a misery and that she mislead the child support agency to his disadvantage. The deceased died without a Will. Under the intestacy legislation, his estate of E$5 million went to his daughter. The former wife claimed provision out of the intestate estate. The rankings compare HSC results from secondary schools across NSW based on the number of students sitting exams and the number of top bands achieved. A number of other students just missed out on a Band 6 by one or two marks. Mr Hudson attributes the students’ success to hard work over their two-years of senior study. “Students can’t achieve at the top level without persistence, dedication, study, revision and putting in the work required both in class and outside of class,” Mr Hudson said. “Our staff work hard to improve the teaching and learning that is happening in all our classrooms and I believe this is demonstrated every year with our results.” Many of the students received offers to study at universities and others have available. Community Disappointment Grows
Modern technology for business transactions is a pressing problem for elderly community who are not ‘tech-savvy’
C O M M U N I T Y disappointment over the Holiday Coast Credit Union’s (HCCU) decision to close its Bulahdelah Agency on 28 February continues to grow. Members have been advised a HCCU Visa Debit Card will be needed for all transactions through the Bank@Post service from 1 March, creating concerns for volunteer organisations and elderly members of the community. President of the Bulahdelah Hospital Auxiliary Irene Worth, said many of By Daniel SAHYOUN
PLANS for the opening of a United Service Station in Bulahdelah is fueling hope that local petrol prices will fall. The new station will be located at the O’Sullivan’s Retreat site adjacent to the northbound lanes of the Pacific Highway, four kilometres north of the town centre, United Area Manager Tania Salter said the site will be geared mainly towards travellers. “It’s something that northbound traffic has needed for some time and will cater for people who want to fuel up, grab something quick to eat and get going,” she said. “It will provide fuel, drinks and convenience food like chips and pies.” Ms Salter said United were currently calling for
expressions of interest for leasing the site with the process expected to take up to eight weeks. “It’s not company run, there will be an independent agent who will be running it for United, it will be their business, very similar to a franchise,” she said. The United Service Station will operate 24-hours a day and Ms Salter is expecting many locals will also purchase their fuel from the site. Bulahdelah Coles Express Manager Sue Malone said although they have cut back on opening hours since the completion of the bypass, she was not expecting the new service station to impact on business. “We are already an established business so people know we’re here, we are doing very well in spite of the bypass,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of our travellers back because there’s no delay, no lining up, it’s all in and out.” Bulahdelah BP Manager Kylie Watling told News Of
the senior population who are not ‘tech-savvy’ will be affected by the changes. “Many are unable or reluctant to access key cards, they are used to using their bank books and filling it out manually,” she said. “They don’t understand modern technology.” Mrs Worth told News Of The Area one of the biggest problems for the Hospital Auxiliary will be authorising transactions. “Our constitution states that we require two signatures for transactions,
but now, we will have one person with a key card,” she said. Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce has contacted HCCU on behalf of community members and business operators and is awaiting a response. HCCU Retail Executive Manager Earl Emerson said the decision to close the Bulahdelah Post Office Agency was simply that the income generated did not justify the operating costs. “Our Bulahdelah Agency Agreement was the last of
its kind in place for Holiday Coast Credit Union,” Mr Emerson said. “We will continue to support our local communities via our 12 Branches spread from Greenhills up to Coffs Harbour, along with our Customer Support Centre
located in Wauchope.” HCCU members requiring assistance with the new banking arrangements should phone the Member Contact Centre on 1300 365 724.

Stop Safely at School ENSURING our children arrive and leave school safely is behind the ongoing campaign by MidCoast Council, which urges all parents and caregivers to brush up on car parking rules near schools and be aware of the meaning of the signs. The campaign is aiming to ensure every driver dropping and collecting children at schools in the MidCoast is obeying the rules and our children arrive at, and leave, school safely. “Many parents say they didn’t understand what the signs meant, usually after they have been cautioned or booked for breaking the rules. The school environment is very busy as more students are driven to school rather
than walk, cycle, or catch a bus,” Council’s Road Safety Officer Chris Dimarco said. “We can’t emphasise enough how important the parking rules are, especially near our schools. Across the MidCoast from 2011 - 2015, there were 47 pedestrian injuries and one fatality on our roads. No one wants to see an accident at any of our schools in the MidCoast region.” As a simple prompt, the completely red sign that says ‘no stopping’ means that you cannot stop or park at all in that zone. In zones with a white sign with a ‘no parking’ image, you may stop to set a child down, but you can only stay for two minutes, and the driver must stay within three metres of the vehicle. It is the responsibility of every
licence holder to ensure they know the road rules. A poster will be distributed by schools to families showing what each sign means and Council is hoping to see all drivers obey the parking rules near our schools. And watch out for Council rangers, who will be on hand at schools before the end of the year to help drivers learn the rules. Disobeying the signs attracts fines and demerit points, but the real motivation for Council rangers is making sure every child is safe to arrive and leave school every day. And that’s worth making sure that everyone stops safely at MidCoast schools.

Heatwave Sparks Fire Alert By Daniel SAHYOUN
MYALL Coast residents hit the waterways or stayed indoors with airconditioners cranking as the region sweltered through one of the worst heatwaves on record last weekend. As the temperature soared, unofficial readings as high as 47°C were recorded in Bulahdelah at 1.00pm on Saturday afternoon, and are believed to have become higher as the weekend progressed. There was little relief at night with the mercury continuing to hover in the high 20s during the evening and early hours of the morning. With extreme
temperatures and winds continuing into Sunday, the Myall Coast Region, like many parts of Australia, were faced with “catastrophic” fire conditions. NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons warned that Sunday’s conditions were the worst possible. “They were catastrophic — we haven’t seen this in NSW to this extent ever,” Commissioner Fitzsimmons said. “It’s not another summer’s day. It’s not another bad fire day. This is as bad as it gets.” The RFS issued a Watch & Act alert for the areas surrounding Crawford River near Bulahdelah on Sunday Morning due to bushfires
around Gooches Road, Terreell Road South and Howes Creek. Local RFS crews were involved in controlling the fires with fears they could spread quickly with the hot winds. Locally, the heat wasn’t just confined to the Myall Coast region, with an official reading of 45.2°C recorded at Williamtown RAAF Base at 3.00pm on Saturday. Temperatures at Williamtown remained in the mid-thirties until midnight. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the stifling conditions were the result of a trough moving north-east from the central region.
THE Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club recently went on a Club run to the picnic area at Karuah. Some twenty plus Club members travelled on the run and it was a successful and very enjoyable day. The weather was beautiful and all enjoyed
a barbecue or just a couple of drinks and a sandwich. Members are now preparing to hold their Annual Motorfest Community Aid Event Day on 11 March at the Myall Sports Oval at Hawks Nest. A great day is expected with already many, many Motor Clubs indicating
their intention to join us at Hawks Nest. Keep this day in your diaries and come to the Show. Money raised will be donated to Local Community Groups including The Surf Club, Rural Fire Service and the Community Bus.

OPINION Community Garden needs Growth
Dear News Of The Area, I HAVE been working very hard everyday for the past six months developing a community garden for Karuah Information Centre with no funding or volunteer help. The Garden is failing after two attempts to rebuild in difficult conditions and a lack of resources.
I have a plan for an eco friendly self-sustaining garden which requires very little watering, fertilising, weeding, pesticides or digging. This method dramatically reduces labour intensity and recycles all water, nutrients and compost waste automatically. I would like to apply for a funding grant to establish this system.
This is an innovative project that I believe will revolutionise urban community gardens. The long term benefits are: improved vegetation growth and reduced maintenance costs and self sustainability even in the worst of weather conditions.
A HUGE thankyou to all of you wonderful people that stopped to help when my car conked out on Tuesday 7 February at the corner of Myall Way

Dear Jasminda, There is friction at work and our boss has suggested we gather once a week for yoga sessions to improve team bonding and reduce stress. What do you think? Mr JG, Williamtown Dear JG, I MUST say it is nice to get some male mail. Now, onto the question. If we rephrase what your boss actually wants, it will become clearer. It is all in the wording, particularly the fine print. Gather once a week for yoga? What your boss is actually suggesting is that you spend an extra hour of your own precious time with the people you are desperately trying to escape from. That doesn’t sound like stress relief, more like community service. And yoga? I mean do you really want to see Sally from marketing trying to master the downward dog? It’s bad enough spending time with your work colleagues when they’re in a shirt and tie. Imagine Bradley lying prostrate in his tracky-dacks. Or Jed from IT curled up in the corner, nicotine starved and miserable, because by 5.30pm he’s normally downed three Coopers and chain-smoked his cares away at the Bull n Bush. It is not your fault your boss has hired 15 incompatible personalities. Leave at the normal time and take up boxing. Iconic Country Club transformation FROM Page 16 Ages ranged from 18 to 85 years young. “People love it because they love the environment and it is one of the few pools that is so close to the water,” Chris said. More than 100 swimmers took to the water, despite the extreme weather conditions. At 74 years of age, Chris swam in four events competing in the 75 to 79 age group.
“It’s only a number,” he said. “And as long as I finish.” In all there were 16 events including a City vs Country Shootout. Sixteen swimmers from the Warringah Masters in Sydney’s north have competed in every Tea Gardens Carnival. “It’s such a good day, we just love coming up,” Peter Myers said. At the end of a very hot day of competition, Myall Masters won the meet with 821 points. Novacastrions came second

on 725 and Warringah third with 597 points. ‘’We’re the smallest town in NSW to have a Carnival of this size, for us to do so, takes a lot of community support,” Rhonda Bobako said. The Myall Masters would also like to thank their sponsors and those who contributed to their fund raising raffle, Tea Gardens Real Estate, Coles, Hawks Nest Golf Club, Hawks Nest Newsagency, Hawks Nest Pharmacy, Ice Cream Shack,

As for the Championship rounds, the winners were, Joe Zancolich from Kiama with a score of 83 points and Jenny Johnston from Belmont with a score of 78 points. The best scratch golf trophies were won by Stan Tworek from Morisset and Di Wolfe from Wodonga. Four days of frantic action on the course culminated with the dinner/dance and presentation on Thursday night for 340 happy, weary golfers. ‘’We’ve had massive feedback from those who

Denis Wilberforce, Gary Wynne, Garry Porter and John Yabsley. There is not much to report for the remainder of the week as the ”big heat” took toll of Friday Open Jackpot Pairs and the Pennant trials organised for Saturday. Hopefully, the Pennant players can get in some much needed practice with the two-bowl game before Pennants commence later this month and in Early March. The forecast looks favourable for the Club Minor Singles Championship opening rounds beginning this coming weekend, 18 and 19 February. This Championship looks very open this year and there should be some tight contests. attended with comments such as ‘best meal we’ve had’ at a veteran golf tournament,” Bob said. The Tournament Director would also like to thank the course Superintendent Bobby Lee and his crew for their work in the difficult heatwave conditions and the volunteers who were on duty as starters, bunker rakers, ball spotters, marshalls, raffle master and table arrangers. “Terrific guys,” Bob said. “Already more than 300 have indicated they’d like to play the tournament next year.”
