Multi Individuality By Daniel SAHYOUN MYALL Coast twins and triplets will celebrate their individuality during Multiple Birth Awareness Week which runs from 1219 March. This year’s theme, “Born a multiple, also an individual,” highlights that although they share a special bond, they are still unique individuals. Eleven-year-old identical twins Kurtis and Toby Barry, said whilst they have a similar appearance, they are complete opposites in many ways. “I have a different personality to Kurtis, and also, I snore and he doesn’t,” Toby said. “Our interests are different, he likes cricket and I like footy and soccer.”

Kurtis told News Of The Area, they are roughly the same height and are both right handed, but that’s where the similarities end. “We have a lot of different ways of doing things, we always take a different approach,” Kurtis said. “Because we look alike, some people think we’re the same, but we’re not.” Twelve-year-old identical twins Jazmin and Jessica Moseley, couldn’t agree more. “We certainly don’t have any similarities, we don’t like the same things and Jessica is definitely more confident,” Jazmin said. “Just because we’re twins, doesn’t mean we are the same, we like different styles of clothing for a start,” Jessica told News Of The Area.

Turner: Merger Working FROM Page 1 asks have we received the $20 million seed money promised to new merged councils. I am not sure where your correspondent has been, but yes Council has received the money (some time ago). $5 million of that money was for Council merger costs and $15 million for community projects of which $1 million is for ‘minor’ community projects and $14 million is for major works. In late November 2016 Council allocated $508,000 of the $1 million for minor community projects and organisations from the Tea Gardens area that received funds were: HN Bridge Club Community Arts & Cultural Building: $33,000.

North Arm Cove Residents’ Association Give Us a Heart!: $47,940. TGHN Preschool Kindergarten Inc Playground Improvements: $30,000. Applications will be called shortly from community groups for grants for the remaining $500,000. Of the $14 million for major works, Council has decided to allocate those funds to improvements to roads and bridges over four years with an additional $16 million from the savings made from the merger process so that a $30 million fund (over and above normal roads and bridges funding) will be available to improve roads and bridges in the Council area. I submit this $30 million fund would not have been achievable pre-merger. Finally, yes, Council did propose an application for a special rate variation to IPART. If this had succeeded the total funds received would have also been allocated to improvements

The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal has allowed an Area Health Authority to apply to it for guardianship orders concerning a patient in hospital. The patient had complex health issues and had been in hospital for some time. An Occupational therapist assessment found that it was unsafe to discharge her home. The purpose of the hospital’s application was to determine whether a guardian should be appointed to assist in the process of planning for her dischargefromhospital. Thepatient did not want to move into aged care and was resisting plans for her future. Whilst the Tribunal noted that the hospital was interested in freeing up a bed for other patients,

the Tribunal accepted that the Area Health Authority also had a genuine concern for the patient’s welfare which allowed the application to be made. Ultimately, the Tribunal made orders appointing the patient’s children as her guardians. This particular patient may have lacked capacity to appoint a guardian herself. However, it is worth remembering that generally speaking, the cost, inconvenience and uncertainty of a Tribunal hearing can be avoided if a guardian is appointed by the person in anticipation of such circumstances. Mullane & Lindsay regularly assist clients in the preparation of such appointments.

THE hum of swirling helicopter blades echoed around Bulahdelah last week, as they continually circled the skies before briefly hovering over the showground helipad for locals to get a close-up view. The A38-013 army helicopters were taking part in the month-long, Australian Defence Force Joint Terminal Attack Controllers training operations in the local area. Williamtown No 4 Squadron Course Manager, Flight Lieutenant Michael Small, said the operations provided training in close air support. “We picked Bulahdelah, as it is a community that is in good proximity to Williamtown Air Force

Base, there’s plenty of room to do it, and also, the community is very supportive,” he said. “We also use some of the surrounding farmlands, we have some agreements with local landholders who are kind enough to let us use their lands.” Fast jet aircraft from Williamtown RAAF Base frequently use the local airspace, particularly the PC-9 and Hawk 127 leadin Fighter aircraft. “We do train in Bulahdelah twice a year for four weeks at a time, but we normally have a lower signature than we did today,” Flight Lieutenant Small said. “This is the first time we have used a helicopter in the area and we thought it would be a good opportunity to show the local community what we do.”

Hotel Rumours Are Put To Rest By Margie TIERNEY

IN recent times, the rumour mill has been running in overdrive in regards to renovation plans for the Tea Gardens Hotel. In typical News Of The Area style, we needed to find out for the community where the Hotel is at, 12 months on from new ownership. News Of The Area has spoken to hotel owner Arthur Laundy for some definite answers. As far as the renovations are concerned, Mr Laundy said, “There are plans which have been

approved.” “As yet, we don’t know when the renovations will start, that’s still up in the air,” said Mr Laundy. He also made it very clear that the Tea Gardens Hotel would not be closing its doors while the renovations took place. The Laundy Group bought the hotel just over 12 months ago adding to its stable of 20 hotels across New South Wales. It’s rumoured the Laundy Group paid around $6 million for the property which had been owned by Lee and Rob Anderson’s family for some 69 years. The Laundy Group is also a family owned

business, Arthur[Snr] buying his first hotel in 1945. Steve and Trish Rodgers manage the Tea Gardens Hotel and the couple has big plans going forward for the hotel. “Trivia nights are held on Thursday evenings with a $150 worth of prizes on offer,” Ms Rodgers said. “There’s also a pool competition every Thursday from 6pm, a live band every Saturday night, free jukebox nights and special meal deals from the Bistro.” The Tea Gardens Hotel, located on Marine Drive, is open seven days a week.

Books in Limbo

IN a bid to keep the Bulahdelah library service operating, representatives from the Chamber of Commerce were invited to meet with MidCoast Council Administrator John Turner and Interim General Manager Glenn Handford last week. A proposal from the Chamber to move the library

to the Rural Transaction Centre was the main topic of discussion. According to Chamber Vice-President Kevin Carter, the move would allow the service to be expanded with the larger space available and improve access for residents through extended opening hours. The move would also

mean that the library could be operated at minimal cost to Council. Mr Carter said retaining community services was a priority for the Chamber. “We have recently lost some services in the town, so it is important to retain the existing facilities,” he said. “In addition to the general community, we have

an aging population who utilise the services, so we need to keep them going.” Although Council did not indicate if the move would be a viable option at the time of the meeting, Mr Carter felt the discussions were positive. Further discussions between Council and the Chamber are expected to take place in the coming week.

Email Scam Alert By John SAHYOUN

MYALL Coast residents are warned to be alert to fake emails which appear to have been sent from the Department of Human Services. This advice comes after Hawks Nest resident Cathrine Humphreys contacted News Of The Area, advising she had received a scam message stating she was eligible for a government subsidy benefit. In order to claim the benefit, Mrs Humphreys

was directed to click on a link and provide personal information. “The message came late at night, they requested a tax file number and I found that unusual,” Mrs Humphreys said. “We had our suspicions and it had made us very nervous, so we contacted the ACCC.” Mrs Humphreys told News Of The Area she has received a few suspicious emails in the past. Department of Human Services General Manager

Hank Jongen said they are aware of recent email scams and remind people to be cautious if they receive an email claiming to be from the government. “While the department contacts people from time to time via email, emails from the department do not include hyperlinks,” Mr Jongen said. “If you receive an email claiming to be from the department with a hyperlink, you should not click on the link and delete the email immediately.”

Mr Jongen urges anyone who has clicked the link and entered their Customer Reference Number or any other personal details, to contact the department. “If you are ever unsure about who an email is from, don’t give out any personal information,” he said. Scams can be reported to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) at scamwatch.gov.au or on 1300 795 995. Koala Action in the Myall By Margie TIERNEY

q

News Of The Area

KOALA SIGHTING: Patanga Street, Hawks Nest.

IT’S been a busy time for the Myall Koala and Environment Group, preparing a number of submissions for a NSW Government strategy to help stabilise and hopefully increase koala numbers. The group was asked to respond by early March, to 11 recommendations made by the State’s Chief Scientist and Engineer.

The recommendations included improved data and mapping and actions to maximise collaboration between Government, researchers, land managers and the community. As well, the Myall Group was invited to give community feedback on the draft ‘Saving Our Species Iconic Koala Project’, a five year plan for koala conservation.

q Scam Alert: Cathrine Humphreys warns of email scam. The Government also asked for input into its State Environment Planning Policy aimed at reducing the decline in animal numbers. Locally, due to the diligence of the Myall Group, numbers of koalas in our area appear to have stayed steady at around 20 since 1999. The Koala group is currently in negotiations with MidCoast Council to implement other strategies to slow down traffic along Kingfisher Avenue in Hawks Nest. Six koalas have been

Mentoring for HSC YEAR 12 students from Bulahdelah Central School are taking part in a studentteacher mentor program aimed at supporting them through their HSC studies. As part of the program, each of the students meet regularly with a teacher they have nominated for advice and assistance. This includes managing assessment tasks, tips on revision techniques and help with developing home study programs. As this is a studentcentred program, they drive the direction of the meetings. Some meet with their mentors several times a week, others weekly, and for some, a quick catch-up once a fortnight is all they need. The school has 21 teachers involved in the program which runs throughout the HSC year.

The Council will be holding candidate information sessions in the run up to the elections. He also pointed out that there will be no wards. As for the MidCoast Water merger, “All I can say is stay tuned,” Mr Handford said. The Interim General Manager reminded the meeting that there is $500,000 in community grants up for grabs. He also pointed out that it’s essential for all applicants to fill out the paperwork correctly. “In the last round, half the submissions were completed incorrectly and didn’t make it past the first post.” There was some good news for users of the Tea

MidCoast meeting in Tea Gardens MIDCOAST Council has held its first community meeting in Tea Gardens for 2017. Interim General Manager Glenn Handford chaired the meeting which attracted a crowd of more than 60 locals. Mr Handford worked his way through a list of topics which included asset management, the Council’s financial position, upcoming elections and rate rise variations. While there’ll be no rate rise until 2018, ratepayers will be hit with an Emergency Service Levy of $180 per year. “It’s not a local government charge,” Mr Handford said. “It goes straight to the NSW Government.” MidCoast is also looking to create a new logo and is calling for community input. Medowie Christian School handed over a cheque for $500 last week to Librarians Chris Shelly and Carol Johnson. “One of our core values is reaching community,’’ Principal Simon Herd told News Of The Area. “We have students from Bulahdelah, Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Dungog and down to Newcastle, so from that perspective it’s giving a little bit back to the communities that we draw from,” Simon said. Homework Help is open to all students from Kindergarten to Year 12. Each student receives a helping hand from a volunteer, most of whom are retired teachers. An added incentive to learning, the Library also provides afternoon tea for the students and volunteers. Principal Simon Herd said, “The aim is to support the library and help provide the food that keeps the kids fed and fuelled in the afternoon and supports the volunteers in that process as well.” The program also helps parents who may be finding they no longer have

Brother and sister Lilliana and Ashton Baillie are regular users of the program. While eight-yearold Ashton is not a great lover of homework, his Mum Sharney said he loves coming to the Library. From the smiles and the laughter in

Community Garden Proposal OPINION

Dear News Of The Area, I HAVE been valiantly trying to re-establish a community garden behind Karuah Information Centre. I have approval to present an information and proposal event at Karuah RSL Club on Wednesday 29 March to draw interest from the public to become involved to assist with building a self-sustainable and eco-friendly, self funding produce garden. If we have enough

interest, I will be preparing a Grant Application to Port Stephens Council for start up funding. So far two attempts have failed due to lack of community awareness and volunteers so I have redesigned the garden to be self watering, self fertilising and self weeding. It can be expanded as funds become available and public interest grows. This method has been used successfully in many communities across Australia as traditional open farming methods require large areas, lots of

were very impressed with a unique hearse. “I’ll hire it for her for the day,” Gianfranco joked. The happy couple has just moved into Palm Lakes Resort and loving their new home and town. “Its got a beautiful feel about it, everyone is so friendly.” Also more than happy were the organisers from

the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club who worked tirelessly in the run up to the event. “We are very, very pleased,” Club President Juergen Seil said. All profits raised go to not for profit organisations such as the local Surf Club, NSW Rural Fire Service and local clinic bus.

Its main components are self watering and self fertilising beds, and permaculture and aquaponics. Anyone having these skills and knowledge are welcomed to attend and show support for the local community. Community Gardens have been proven to reduce crime rates and strengthen Social and Education Events. Peter James

The School’s major fundraiser displays and sells creations from local and national artists over the Easter Long Weekend. ‘’This event is the major fundraiser for our school and provides many resources including facilities, programs and resources,” Principal Mark Clemson said. Still going strong after 40 years, the Art Expo has many elements. “Historically, a feature artist comes and does demos across the weekend,” Mark told News Of The Area.

With a few instances where students have narrowly missed being hit by vehicles, Bulahdelah Central School Deputy Principal Mrs Deb Gilbert said ensuring the safety of every student was a priority. “Regardless of whether

it is at the back of the school or the front, safety is a huge concern for us,” she said. “Accidents have happened at other schools and we don’t want this happening here, so it’s about providing a safe environment and safer options for students.” Like other traffic offences, disobeying the laws in school zones attract both fines and demerit points. Pulling up in a bus zone, disobeying a no stopping sign and double parking in a school zone each attract a fine of $325 plus two demerit points. Exceeding the school zone speed limit by just a few kms/h will result in a $189 fine, and if you travel more than 20kms/h above the school speed limit, expect to cop a hefty $568 fine and the loss of five demerit points. Mrs Gilbert said the school regularly liaises with Council, Busways and other authorities to continually improve school zone safety.

Seniors Expo Success By Margie TIERNEY A VERY successful Expo promoting Aged Care Services was held at the Myall Quays Shopping Centre in Tea Gardens last week. Organised by MidCoast Council, it was all part of Seniors Week. A dozen services set up camp to answer questions and provide information on everything from home care to over 55’s accommodation and aged care facilities. “I think it’s a great thing for the community to provide information, especially in an area like this when we’re a bit isolated and away from so many services,” Elsa Colella from Estia Health said. Courtney Diamond from

Australian Hearing travelled from her base in Raymond Terrace. “We come out to the nursing homes and do visits with those residents who aren’t easily popped into the car.” “It’s hard to access these services if you don’t know where to go so this has been very helpful,” Courtney said. Representatives from Carers NSW were there to promote their service which has been in operation for over 40 years offering counselling and respite. MidCoast Council had a stall promoting its social support service operating out of Hawks Nest. Brett Scott from the Grange, RSL Life Care was handing out information on

over 55’s accommodation. Christine Heys and Stephen Argyle had travelled up from Maitland to promote their Local Mobility family owned business. Baptist Care and Next were there to talk about inhouse aged care services. The lads from Meals on Wheels were there with big smiles and plenty of info. “We cook and deliver,” Dan Holmes said. “Eddie and I are also very good at peeling potatoes and washing up,” Dan added. And making sure everyone who visited and worked at the Expo was well fed last Thursday was the team from the local Lions Club doing a roaring trade with the sausage sizzle.

These finishing touches, which include road reconstruction in sections of Stroud, Lee and Crawford Streets, will be undertaken by contractors, St Hilliers, on behalf of MidCoast Council over the next 18 weeks. Works include reconstruction of the road to a higher standard, upgrading the existing stormwater

Leigh told the children that anyone can develop a character, all you need to do is draw a shape and then give it eyes, a nose, ears and a mouth.

The solution involves removing large open table drains and replacing them with an underground piped stormwater system. “As well as providing smoother and safer local roads, this part of the Bulahdelah township will also be visually improved.” Traffic control will be in place and motorists are asked to observe all signage and directions from road crews, and to travel with caution in the area.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from our three News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. Send your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Hi Jasminda, With all the talk about reduced penalty rates in the catering industries and how the employers will be able to employ more staff I don’t think on the whole that this will happen. You would think on the lines of paying less wages to their staff they would cut out all together the surcharges that they impose on Sundays and Public Holidays either upfront or hidden. I am of the opinion the staff numbers will remain the same as the surcharges will. I will wait and see if there’s any changes. JC, Tanilba Bay Dear JC, IN order to answer your question (which was more of a statement or opinion, but hey, I’m up for a challenge) I drove to my favourite restaurant to do some undercover research. As always, the service was impeccable. There was a young staff member there who was so professional that she should not only control food and beverage operations, but potentially the entire country. I am confident her high-level diplomacy skills, energy and persuasive ability would run rings around many executives. She doesn’t sweat, she sparkles. She reinvents swine froth into pork belly foam and dodgy apple pie into tart aux pommes. Now I’m not sure what this young lady earns, probably not a lot, and yet she sashays past tables, flings serviettes like a bullfighter, cracks pepper over main meals with aplomb and makes you feel, just for a few short hours, that it is worth dropping your entire weekly pay for a three course meal. Now that’s talent. But to your letter. Will surcharges come down with penalty rate reductions? By that stage of your letter, I was on my third glass of red, care of Ms Hospitality 2017, and therefore any ability to think critically was somewhat compromised. So I don’t know, in short, if surcharges will come down or if more staff will be employed, but I did have a wonderful night. I may be poorer in the back pocket, but I’m experientially richer, and for that, JC, I thank you.

Lifesavers of the Year By Margie TIERNEY 2017 is flying with the end of the Surf Lifesaving Season just over a month away. It’s also awards season with Windjana Chester and Sam Hyde named Tea Gardens Hawks Nest SLSC Junior Lifesavers of the Year. The pair was recognised for their U14 members’ achievements in surf lifesaving and the contributions they made to all levels of surf lifesaving, as well as within the community. Sam and Windjana both hold their Surf Rescue Certificates and are valued members of their respective patrols. Earlier this year, Sam

and Windjana joined nominees from the other 12 clubs within the Hunter Branch, and attended a Junior Development Camp held at Birubi Beach in Port Stephens. The camp involved physical challenges, presentations and discussions, activities and scenarios that require leadership, teamwork and communication. All nominees were interviewed by members of the Hunter Branch Executive to determine the Hunter Branch Junior Lifesaver of the Year. Unfortunately Sam and Windjana progressed no further.

SOCIAL bowls was cancelled on Tuesday 7 March due to showers and strong south easterly winds blowing. Four of us bowling desperados did enjoy a “rollup”. Good practice as we all know we often have to bowl in not ideal weather conditions. Thankfully, the annual RSL LifeCare Grange Trophy Day went ahead as scheduled, on Thursday 9 March. Julie Woolard, Manager of RSL LifeCare Grange joined us for lunch and presented prizes to the winning teams. Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club appreciates the continuing support of

RSL LifeCare; without their sponsorship this event would not be possible. The format for play was 2 games, 2 bowl triples 12 ends to be played. Bowlers change rinks at the completion of their first game. The winners, who won both their games, were Bette Saillard, Bev Stephens and Loretta Baker. This team was the only one to win both games. Second and third place was determined by adding the shots from both games. Hence, second place winners were Robyn Beaumont, Christine Fossey

Hawks Trial vs Paterson River RUGBY LEAGUE

Tea Gardens Hawks By Neil REYNOLDS THE Tea Gardens Hawks had a positive opening to the season, with a strong win, 48 points to nil against Paterson River on Saturday. Paterson has been graded in “B’s” this season, and fielded a fair side. The Hawks were positive in their approach to the game, and played with purpose, with as many as nine players absent from the trial, and will go into the season with confidence. Hawks were systematic. Nathan Ruse continued his 2016 defensive effort. Jason Purdon took the ball up with purpose, along with Nic Lagudi and Steven Soper. Centres, Ryan Saunders and CJ Misifosa set the bar high. Jack Beverley, David Edmonds, and Luke Handsaker dominated in attack and defence up the middle. Regan Hunter was involved. Halves, Billy Greentree and Steve Slee created space, producing plenty for the outside backs. Rookie, Cain Waterman was never far from the action. Without players, Trent Murphy, Mitch Baker, Anthony Cameron, Nick Clarke, Mikey Nanai, Brendan Lynch, Kirran Clarke, and Matty Cameron will make inroads into the “A” grade competition this year. Tries for the Hawks were scored by Ryan Saunders x 2, Tarryn Roach x 2, CJ Misifosa, Jake Langdon, and Jade Duroux. Billy Greentree kicked

three from six. Jade Duroux kicked two from two.

Lady Hawks The “Tea Gardens Engineering” Lady Hawks could not get opposition on the weekend. Both teams will travel to Woy Woy this week to play trial games. The Lady Hawks will play Woy Woy at 11am, while the Hawks will play a round robin against Woy Woy and the Coogee Dolphins from 12noon. Don’t forget the Hawks Supporters Club 2017 memberships are now available. The cost will remain at $25 a single, or $45 for a family. Rob Smith has cards available now. Contact Dakka on 0408 434593 Myall River Juniors Myall River has confirmed three sides in 2017. The U9’s squad has been confirmed, while the U16’s will field a team. The U14’s has begun training, and has strong interest. The U12’s side will struggle to field a team however the Club still remains hopeful of entering a side in the either 10, 11, or 12 year age groups. Expressions of interest for an U6 or U7 side has not shown support. Official registration evenings will be Tuesday nights, March 14, 21, and 28. First competition rounds will be on Sat April 1. To contact the Club phone 0417 226619 or email: nreynolds.2@ bigpond.com.

BOWLING

q

The victorious Grade 6 side after their win against Hexham on Saturday.

Victorious Grade Six Tea Garden’s Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 8 March With many players required for Mid-Week Pennant duties away, 36 bowlers battled out the usual Wednesday Gala format, this time over 18 ends. Twenty points were awarded for a win plus one for each end won. The winners were Vic Garlick, Col Saillard, Col Fossey and Bill Heylbut. The runners-up were the Triples team of Denis Wilberforce, Henry Dallas and Bill Bridges. The third round of the Mid-Week pennants was played today with Tea Gardens taking on Wallsend at home. This was a tough match with Tea Gardens going down to a well-drilled side. The Mark Hair side lost 17-23; the Greg Pearson side kept their undefeated status intact winning on the last end 21-20 and the Danny Johnson combination lost by 5 shots 17-22. The overall result: Tea Gardens 55, Wallsend 65. 10 March With plenty of bowls played this week it was

heartening to see 18 players contest the Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs today. The winners, with the highest score were Vic Garlick and Denis Wilberforce. John Atherton and Bill Heylbut were the runners-up. The jackpot was not won. 11 March It is always great to have an away win in Pennant play and the Tea Gardens Mighty Grade 3 Dolphins managed that today at Lemon Tree Passage. The Richard Lee team managed a 22-22 draw in their match after being stuck on 19 shots for 6 ends. They won the last three to manage the draw. The Steve Pell team were never headed and had a great win 24-13. In the remaining game, the Sean Mearrick team had a 6 shot lead going into the last end when they dropped a disastrous 7 on the last end to lose 18-19. The match was won by Tea Gardens 64-54. It was a good day as well for the Mighty Dolphins Grade 6 side that were playing at home against Hexham. Tea Gardens enjoyed a clean sweep winning every match. The Max Stephens team won 21-17; the Danny Johnson team won 25-15 and the Doug Naylor combination nailed a great win 27-9. Tea Gardens winning the contest 73-41.

16 MYALL COAST NEWS OF THE AREA

The Mighty Dolphins Grade 5 side played away at Nelson Bay and on a doughy green went down convincingly 35-87. Bet they can’t wait to play them at home on a green with a bit of run! The Kerry O’Brien team lost heavily 8-40. The Keith Smith side lost 12-27 and the Ron Webster team lost 15-20. Tough match! 12 March The Mighty Dolphins Grade 5 side, playing their catch-up round one match against Lemon Tree Passage, redeemed themselves today by managing a close win 5752. The Kerry O’Brien team had a complete reversal of form winning their game 2714 and carrying the day as the remaining two teams lost in close contests. The Danny Johnson team lost 13-16 and the Keith Smith combination lost 1722. Grade 6 was also playing a catch-up game today playing away to Hamilton North. The home side were just too good on their home turf winning every game to take the match 64-48. The Max Stephens team lost 13-21; the Doug Naylor nearly pulled off a win going down 20-21 and the Ron Webster team lost 15-23. So summing up the week, some wins some losses and plenty of bowls played.

Superb Swimming Outcomes FROM Page 20 achievement for Montanna’s first season of competitive swimming. Another awesome happening in the Club is the exciting news that former Club President, Peter Kellaway, will be competing in the World Masters Games, to be held in Auckland in April. Peter will be a strong contender for honours in the 80-84 age group. Also representing Myall Masters will be current President, Chris Lock, who is in peak form and will stand on the podium in the 75-79 age group. Both swimmers are no strangers to the elite level of World competition. Peter and Chris’

commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle through the sport of swimming is an inspiration to our Club members. At Club level, the final handicap event was swum and all that remains is to tally the points to see who will take out placings in the prestigious event. How it works is members register to participate and their swim time is used to calculate the time they leave the blocks. Some swimmers may have to give a generous lead but speeding down the lane to catch up makes for exciting viewing. For the judges it can often be a difficult task to separate the winners as they hit the wall. The Club competed at the recent Raymond Terrace
