By Margie TIERNEY OUR local Boomerang Bags group has come up with an exciting new initiative in their campaign to rid the planet of plastic. “We are delighted to announce that Boomerang Bags Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest (BBTGHN) has received the support of the Hawks Nest Golf Club, the Tea Gardens Country Club and the Tea Gardens Hotel to host a plastic bag-free meat raffle in the last week of May,” Brooke Feltis told News Of The Area. “We are encouraging punters to ‘bring their own bag’ to the raffles on Friday 25 May at the Golf and Country Clubs and on Monday 28 May at the Pub.”

50th for Lions FROM Page 1 Tea Gardens recently celebrated its 50th Anniversary. 70 Lions, partners and guests including Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie, marked the occasion with a dinner at Mumm’s on the Myall. Back when the Lions Club was formed in April of 1968, one its first achievements was to clear and establish a picnic area at Winda Woppa around the old mill site. As you drive into Tea Gardens, you can’t fail to notice achievement, Lions Park up on the hill. But for those new to the area, its worth noting that the Lions Club raised nearly $15,000 to help build the community swimming pool, another $10,000 went to the establishment of the

Big Council Meet By John SAHYOUN THE importance of working together was the message conveyed by Mayor David West at MidCoast Council’s Community update meeting held at Bulahdelah last week. With standing room only at the School of Arts Hall, Mayor West said the turnout was “by far the biggest” of the update sessions held across the region so far. “When things are running smoothly we only get a few people to these sessions,” Councillor Len Roberts said. “When this many people come out, you know there are

issues to be addressed.” The meeting was led by MidCoast Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Ron Hartley who said the most “robust discussions” centred on issues raised by the community, particularly the Stroud and Lee Street roadworks. “It is apparent that one of the biggest issues is the lack of communication and the void of information on what Council is doing to bring the project to fruition,” he said. “It has been a difficult project in terms of getting information from the contractor and the limited options available to Council without causing the

community included the Service Centre proposal, which will be discussed at Council’s Strategic Committee meeting on 13 June, condition of roads, river water quality, flooding and rate harmonisation. Following the meeting, the feedback from residents has been positive, with many stating it was very productive. Mayor West said the issues raised will help Council deliver better services to the community. “We are leading an amalgamated Council, and we need to work together to make it the best Council there is,” he said.

Gallery Recognition in Parliament By Margie TIERNEY NOTHING succeeds like success, just ask the 7,700 people, who’ve visited the new home of Galleries in the Gardens since it opened. And the members of the Galleries in the Gardens Art group have another reason to take a bow, having recently been recognised in State Parliament. Out of the blue, they received a postal delivery which contained a NSW Parliamentary Certificate and a letter advising that in the first session of the 56th Parliament, the Gallery had

been acknowledged with a Community Recognition Statement by local MP, Kate Washington. In the letter to Galleries in the Gardens, Kate Washington said, “Serving as a member of the NSW Parliament on behalf of the electorate of Port Stephens, I am granted the privilege of acknowledging outstanding service to our community via a Community Recognition Statement (CRS).” “While I am only allocated one minute to speak on a CRS, it serves to highlight the good work being undertaken by local organisations.’’

LONG time RSL stalwart, Barry Whiteman has been rewarded for years of service, receiving the Milne-Wood medal for 2017. Barry along with wife Trish recently travelled to Sydney for the award ceremony at RSL LifeCare in Narrabeen. “It is a great honour to have been selected as the recipient this year. I wish to thank the Board and Executive RSL LifeCare for this exceptional award,” Barry said. Since moving to Tea Gardens 17 years ago, Barry has devoted much of his life to helping Veterans and volunteering his time and efforts to the aged care facility, Peter Sinclair Gardens in Hawks Nest. Back in 2002, Myall Lodge

Over the years more beds were added but that also meant changes to the way the operation functioned. “New health regulations were introduced and Ted Mowbray was not allowed to supply fresh fish and chickens sourced by myself from donations by Golf Club members, or the fruit and vegetables supplied by local residents from their home gardens,” Barry said. “The residents were devastated, ‘What about our fish and chooks?’ they wanted to know. In 2012, RSL LifeCare sought to change the name from Myall Lodge and Barry Whiteman was tasked with approaching good friend Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair to ask his approval for the renaming.

Peter’s response, “Wait on a minute, they usually do this when you pass on.” But of course Peter accepted the proposal and today Peter Sinclair Gardens, with more than 60 beds is now affectionately known as Pete’s place. “My service as Liaison Officer has been the most rewarding and humbling experience of my lifetime,” Barry said. While Barry Whiteman had many others to thank for their support, he made special mention of his wife of 55 years, Trish. “The love of my life has supported me with her ideas and many hours of typing and editing my correspondence, one of her most famous quotes “You can’t say that” has always been valued with appreciation and love.”

Dear News Of The Area, BULAHDELAH Hospital Auxiliary is aiming to raise sufficient funds to buy special mattresses for 14 palliative care patients in the Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Karuah, Stroud, Booral, Bulahdelah and Seal Rocks area. With the Government’s push to make aged members of our society stay in their own homes rather than drawing on the health care system in hospitals, the call of the Hospital Auxiliary is timely. Home Nurses have identified 14 patients who desire to spend their last days in the comfort of their own home and the mattresses will do much to ensure these days are spent more comfortably. Along with the comfort they provide, there is also the major benefit of relief from pressure areas which lead to the development of health complications. At a cost of $2,209 each, this is an ambitious project, but not one beyond the Auxiliary. Over many years, the Auxiliary has been instrumental in providing significant health equipment to the benefit of the local community. Some of these improvements included funding beds at Bulahdelah Community Hospital and the provision of televisions for each ward. (These were subsequently

THE Myall River Junior League is four games into the season. The Club has three teams competing in this season. After competing strongly against Swansea in the opening game they were outclassed against valentine. Playing their first home game two weeks ago the 10’s defeated Cardiff by 22 points to 15.

These fixtures will precede the Tea Gardens Lady Hawks match against the Raymond Terrace Ravens. The Hawks will finish the day against the Raymond Terrace Magpies. Game times are to be advised. The Lady Hawks have had an eventful build up to the seasons start. They to struggled for

Dear Mrs PR, WE all have individual reactions to PDA (Public Displays of Affection). Hand holding seems pretty low on the list of things that I have witnessed couples doing in public, and quite innocent and cute. We vary in our feelings towards PDA depending on a whole range of things including our upbringing, our cultural differences and our social values. Hand holding could be a sign of your husband protecting you (a bit like walking on the side nearest the road, which is a very honourable and gentlemanly thing to do). It could also be viewed as a sign of ownership (this is my wife, buddy, get your roving eyes off her), which may sit well with you or not, depending on a whole host of things. My husband likes to hold my hand when we are looking at plants in our garden. I’m not sure whether he is being affectionate, or trying to keep me there long enough to finish the weeding, but I’m not complaining either way. I do, however, find it difficult to hold hands when walking, because we are different heights and he takes one stride to each of my two. Hand holding feels a bit like a three-legged race. The only time I do want to hold his hand in public is when we are in Bunnings because I always seem to lose him. In fact, I would quite like to put him in one of those harnesses that used to be all the rage with frazzled parents so their kids wouldn’t take off in public. Perhaps you can show your husband affection in another way. A casual rub on the arm or a peck on the cheek now and then should keep him happy. Only three teams went through undefeated with; Tom Short, Graham Kelly and Dennis Ashbridge again showed their consistency with + 53 points. For five weeks running Brian Emmett’s team of Paul Carter and Gary Porter were in the winner’s circle but lost on a count back to a game of Pairs which included a visitor from Manly David Rust. He joined with Graham (half back) Watkins to win with 55 points. The Myall Bistro voucher went to George Winter. 11 May: It was a wild and woolly day for bowls

with 12 players braving the conditions in Friday Open Pairs. It is hoped that next week, with the Pennant Grade 6 team enjoying a bye, that there will be an increase in attendance. 12 May: There were mixed results in the NDBA Saturday Pennant competition today with the Pelican Pest Control sponsored Grade 4 side playing at home against Mayfield West. The game certainly wasn’t assisted by the horrible weather with galeforce winds adding yet another degree of difficulty for precision play. I guess the Grade 4 side will not blame the wind for their loss with the Mark Hair four the best performed going down by 4 shots 1823. The Jeff Baker combination lost 14-22 and

What a great final it was. Lorraine leading in the early stages of the match but Dale sent down some magnificent bowls and took control of events, gaining a significant lead. The score was 24 v 12 Dale just requiring 1 more point to be declared the Club Major Single Champion for 2018. Lorraine obviously had other ideas and kept Dale scoreless for the next 3 ends but that elusive point was finally achieved. Final score 25 v 19. Congratulations Dale. By Rachael VAUGHAN ONE in two Australian men have had a mental health problem at some point in their lives and three out of four suicides are men, according to the Movember Foundation. As the nation becomes more and more accepting of speaking out about mental health, it is our men that are still being left behind as they continue to build on the statistics of being comfortable enough to raise their hand and bravely say, ‘I need help’. One Port Stephens man is ensuring that he provides a strong role model for Men with mental health concerns, as he shared his story with News Of The Area. For Darren Bisson, an event in February 2017 shook his family to the core. For the next 18 months,

Darren did what any typical husband and father would do, and he focused on his family, at what turned out to be at the cost of his own physical and mental wellbeing. In February 2018, it all came to a head, and Darren realised he needed help, and he put up his hand and asked for it. On a particularly dark day, Darren received an email from the Movember Foundation asking if he would be interested in nominating to run the NYC Marathon in November as part of a 25 person team. Not thinking he had a chance, having not run more than 10km in his adult life, Darren submitted a nomination. To his shock, he was accepted as part of an international team of 25 people to run the NYC Marathon on behalf of the Movember Foundation.

Darren told News Of The Area, “With no experience in running, I was not sure what I had gotten into.” “With my weight ballooning to 108kg, I started a 6 month marathon training program to begin preparations.” “To assist in my journey, I’ve taken sledgehammer to my diet to bring my weight down, which is assisting my training,” he said. Since starting his training, Darren has improved his running time by five minutes. He said, “Still a long way to go, but each improvement counts.” Darren will compete in the NYC Marathon in November, and is using his Facebook page and GoFundMe page in the meantime to use his training story to shed light on Men’s mental health.
