Gift cards popular, but use before they expire By Daniel SAHYOUN

q

WITH Australians spending around $2.5 billion a year on gift cards, there is no denying their popularity. For a group a Myall Coast teenagers, the wide range of gift cards available make them a good present option, as long as they are redeemed before the expiry date. Khloe Middleton said she often receives gift cards on her birthday from her grandparents. “They make a good gift as I can buy what I like with them, when I want to,” she said.

Gift cards popular, but use before they expire FROM Page 1

“It’s fun shopping because I can put a couple together and get something more expensive.” For Shonna Miller, the variety of gift cards available is appealing. “You can buy them almost anywhere and some are like a keycard that give you flexibility so you’re not restricted to a certain shop,” she said. Abby Fenner told News Of The Area that gift cards make great presents for friends and family who live away. “They are really easy to post and you don’t

need to wrap them, you just put them straight inside the card,” she said. But with many cards not being used before they expire, millions of dollars are going to waste. Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello said after the expiry date it is at the whim of the trader whether they choose to honour the cards. “Consumers who try to use them after the expiry date, do so with mixed success,” he said. “We’re calling on NSW consumers to make a special effort to dig out

Volunteers clean up Great Sandy Point Beach. Photo supplied

By Margie TIERNEY THEY laughingly called themselves the “Garbage Army”, but 20 enthusiastic volunteers had a hugely successful day recently cleaning up Great Sandy Point Beach. More than 50 giant bags of litter and garbage were removed from the beach between

Dark Point and Mungo Brush. Organiser David Fingret also learned some valuable lessons for future clean ups. “The need to get to the garbage quickly after a big storm is imperative,” Mr Fingret told News Of The Area. “Only a small amount of sand has to

be returned for much of the smaller pieces of garbage to be covered up again.” The most common garbage collected was glass bottles, PET containers and, of all things, thongs. Mr Fingret said the clean up day was a triumph of community spirit and cooperation.

“Cars got bogged and were happily towed out by others.” “Collectors walked side by side getting to know each other and swapping stories, and whales and dolphins appeared from time to time making the whole experience just a bit magical,” Mr Fingret said.

PRESCHOOL funding, building approvals and the greyhounds racing ban were amongst the topics discussed with Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead in Bulahdelah last week. Meeting at the Rural Transaction Centre, Mr Bromhead told the small group of community members present the government had allocated $115 million for the Start Strong Program to help ease and reduce preschool fees. “$85 million of it is going to four-year old’s and we want to see 100 percent of this age group in preschool,” he said. “Also, for three-year old’s that are Aboriginal, from a disadvantaged home or with any form of disability, there’s full funding for two years.” When asked about the government’s backflip on the greyhound racing ban, Mr Bromhead said an overwhelming number of people believed the ban wasn’t

to $20,000.00, the asset holders may allow the executor(s) to administer the assets without a grant of Probate. If this is the case, the executor(s) must usually provide an indemnity to the asset holder. If however the estate includes real estate or accounts/ shareholdings with values of more than $15,000.00 to $20,000.00 the executor(s) will be required to obtain a grant of Probate before they can administer the estate. The process of administering an estate where Probate is required usually requires a considerably larger amount of time than where Probate is not required.

The Awards Night was a showcase of creative writing, artwork and public speaking from the students from Bungwahl Public School, Coolongolook Public School, Bulahdelah Central School, Tea Gardens Public School and St. Joseph’s Bulahdelah. The night began with presenters Bernadette Newton and Ren Sullivan introducing the program. Bridie O’Connell, a Year 6 student from Bulahdelah Central School, won the Overall Creative Writing Award and was also the receiver of the Betty Bramble Trophy. The Betty Bramble Trophy is a perpetual trophy that is awarded each year in memory of the contribution Betty Bramble made to education and the creative arts over many years of her teaching life. Farmers Market here to stay

q Farmers Market organiser Melissa Lopez. q G RANDPARENTS DAY: Lucy the Clydesdale with School Librarian Ruta Woolley. THERE was a buzz of activity at Karuah Public School last week when grandparents, parents and children gathered for the annual Grandparents Day celebrations. The day began with each class performing in a special showcase assembly giving the students a chance to share their talents with the visitors who had travelled from near and far for the occasion. The Grandparents also toured the school and joined in a lesson with their

grandchildren. With the classrooms full of action, the youngsters showed their artistic skills with craft activities, completed with a little hands-on help from grandparents. The day was rounded off with a mini fete and a visit from Lucy the Clydesdale, the star of the popular Horse Poo Lotto. Cake and gift stalls, book fair and a ‘Guess the Teachers and Grandparents’ game were also enjoyed by the older and younger

generations together. Organising teacher Miss Blatch said she was delighted to see so many grandparents and visitors join in the celebrations. “The day was a huge success, it was wonderful to see so much community support,” she said. By Margie TIERNEY TEA Gardens now has its own farmers market, although it got off to a bumpy start. The first Saturday market proved challenging in more ways than one, with howling winds and the road works being carried out in and around Anzac Park. But organiser Melissa visitors is always greatly appreciated. “Grandparents Day is another way Karuah Public School works with its local community to support the education of its students,” Mrs Saffioti said.

Lopez is adamant they’re in for the long haul. “There’s a process before you can come to the market as a stallholder,” Melissa told News Of The Area. Part of that process is auditing. “That’s very important to us to make sure that the food that is being sold comes directly from the farmer.” Melissa, her husband

and three children own a farm in Bulahdelah and all of their produce, meat and poultry is chemical free. “The farmers market connects farmers to the people, so that when they go and buy from them they can actually tell them what they’re growing and how they grow it.” Melissa is currently offering farmers free

auditing to encourage more to come on board. But no matter what, they’ll be back again in Tea Gardens on the first Saturday of every month. For more details go to http:// farmersmarkets. org.au/markets or to apply to become a stall holder www. e n u i n e f a r m e r s market.com.au

Marine Rescue Briefs Kate Washington MARINE Rescue Port Stephens recently held a half day briefing for Port Stephens State MP Kate Washington. Ms Washington was initially briefed on the ‘round-theclock’ activities of the Unit at the Command Centre at Nelson Head. The MP was also informed of the Unit’s need for additional donations and increased members to ensure it can fully man its lifesaving activities. After seeing the Radio Communications Centre, Ms Washington was

shown the Inner Light Museum and Tea Rooms, and the surrounding grounds that are a now a popular option for local weddings. Ms Washington met the volunteers who operate the gift shop, which provides one of the main sources of income to maintain the Unit’s safety mission. Ms Washington received a tour of the Unit’s rescue vessels, PS31 John Thompson and PS30 Codi K II, and was then taken out on the Bay to show the capability of the PS31, which was introduced to service in July 2016.

Unit Commander Lee Uebergang said, “It is important that politicians and the community realise that the major source of funds come from donors, sponsors and the community, and though Marine Rescue Port Stephens is highly trained and equipped, it is not an agency of the NSW Government.” “It relies on community funding to maintain the 24/7 rescue umbrella on waters inside and outside Port Stephens,” he said. The Unit expressed its appreciation of the support and interest of Kate Washington MP.

Meetings Backlash

By Margie TIERNEY

TEAM leaders from the new MidCoast Council have continued their cross country round of community meetings. Around 60 residents turned out on a wet and stormy night in Tea Gardens

last Wednesday to hear the Council’s justification for a special rate variation, in layman’s terms a rate rise. MidCoast is proposing an SRV which will cost the average rate payer an extra $256 dollars over the next four years.

10 MYALL COAST NEWS OF THE AREA

There will also be another $20 a year added to their bills for waste management. E x e c u t i v e Stephen Embry said an extra five million dollars was needed for roads and bridges maintenance. But the locals weren’t impressed.

C o m m e n t s ranged from, “We’re not going to cop it” to questioning why former Great Lakes ratepayers were still paying far more than homes owners in the Manning and Gloucester regions. “We have to bear the debt and the inequity,” said Chris Shelly. If approved, the increase will come

into effect mid-way through next year. Locals also raised the need for better signage and/ or a roundabout at the Myall Quays shopping centre, the latter deemed too expensive by Council. MidCoast said it will schedule another meeting to discuss dredging and sand issues.

Glamorous end to school

By Daniel SAHYOUN

IT WAS all about glamorous frocks and stylish suits at Bulahdelah Central School’s Year 12 Formal Celebrations held last week. Parents and school staff joined the young adults at Bulahdelah Golf Club for a night of memories and the of snapping of hundreds of photographs that will last a lifetime. Ebony Ding from Bundabah said she spent months searching for the perfect gown, deciding on a pale pink chiffon dress just days before the big event. “I began looking about six months ago but couldn’t find anything I liked, I was

panicking a bit,” she said. “But two days before the formal, I walked into a shop and saw exactly what I wanted in my favourite colour.” Dinner was enjoyed in the elaborately decorated function room and was followed by tears, laughter and applause during the formal speeches. Speaking on behalf of the graduating class, Hannah Rietveld and Jayden Lilley thanked the teachers who had guided and supported them during their final school year. Parent Fiona Minett, Year Advisor Casey Connell and Principal Don Hudson congratulated the

students on completing their schooling and wished them all the best for their futures. Graduating student Kyle Shultz attended Bulahdelah Central School since Kindergarten and said the Formal was a fitting end to his school life. “It was a lot fun and a good way to celebrate the end of 13-years of school,” he said. “I’m going to miss seeing my friends every day, it certainly feels odd that we’re all moving on.” Kyle told News Of The Area he is planning on completing an acting course at TAFE next year and plans to open a comic book themed café with his brother in the future. The formal evening concluded with more photographs and dancing.

REMEMBRANCE Day services were held around the country last Friday, to mark the day 98 years ago when the Armistice was signed to end the war to end all wars. S e r v i c e s were held in Bulahdelah, Karuah and Tea Gardens RSL President Terry Munright led a moving commemoration in Anzac Park. ‘’We must never ever forget the sacrifices made,” Mr Munright told the gathering.

He went on to become an officer and was killed by friendly fire. Jenny and Brian had been married for just 15 months and had a three-monthold daughter. Just like Anzac Day, it was a time for memories and tributes. Ninety-threeyear-old Bill Richards was a teenager when he went to England and

“We remember WWII, Korea, Vietnam, East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan and now the action in Syria.” “We remember the families who continue to live with the impact on loved ones, the mothers, fathers, sons and daughters, years after the guns went silent.” Tea Gardens RSL Sub Branch Secretary Jenny Ross-Henry, herself a former soldier, was just a young wife and mother when her first husband was killed in the Vietnam War. “It was 48 years

After the official ceremonies and two minutes silence it was time for a cuppa and a chance to reminisce. Terry Munright’s words summed up the day. “They are all here with us today either in person or most assuredly in our thoughts.”

BOWLING Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By John SLATER 9 November Cloudy skies with the threat of rain greeted the 48 bowlers turning out to play in the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition today. There were a few spits of rain when a dark cloud rolled over but thankfully the day was competed uninterrupted. Low scores were the order of the day, which was an indication that the teams were evenly matched. The winners won on a countback. They were: Lon Richards, Bill Moon and Denis Wilberforce. They had +20. Also on +20 were the team of: Vic Garlick, Col Fossey and Bill Heylbut. The “luck draw” winners were: John Ashton, John Yabsley and Alan Greenhalgh. 11 November Beautiful clear skies and a cool south-easterly breeze

saw 24 players attempting to win the Friday Open Jackpot Pairs today. The winners with the highest margin had to survive a countback to win the money. They were: John Slater and Alan Greenhalgh on +8. In second place, also on +8 were: Maurice O’Brien and Jeff Baker. The “lucky losers” were: Bruce Everitt and Terry Eyles. The jackpot was not won and will reach $160 for next week. Worth winning! 13 November In contrast to Friday, Sunday Bowls was played in very hot conditions. The Sunday Bowlers enjoyed a visit from the Hamilton North Bowling Club and a combined total of 54 players competed utilising both greens. In keeping with the spirit of the occasion, the winners were decided by a draw from the cards. The game of bowls was the real winner! Thanks are extended to cooks Ian Baker and Barry Goode who had a busy day.

Just a reminder that there will be no Sunday Bowls next week as the Country Club is hosting an “Eleven and Up” tournament over the weekend of 19 and 20 November. When Sunday Bowls resumes it will be the visit to Dungog on 27 November, which is now fully booked. The Sunday Bowlers will hold their Christmas breakup luncheon on Sunday 11 December.

Coming Events The Village Challenge V a President’s side will be held on Friday 25 November. The Patron’s Pairs will be conducted on Saturday 3 December. Presentation Night is Monday 5 December. Versatility Day will be held on Saturday 10 December. Bowls break-up day Wednesday 21 December. The Jaffa.

Nothing much appears to have changed in the transition from Great Lakes Council to MidCoast Council. I believe the majority of residents were against the Coral Tree removal. MCC went ahead with their removal. Few wanted change to the waterfront along Marine Drive. It went ahead. Well, I don’t want my rates to increase. Stop wasting our money on concrete waterfronts and useless sand dredging schemes. Find economical ways to run an efficient council. John Alterator, Hawks Nest
