It was the most costly single battle fought by Australian soldiers in the Vietnam War and involved 105 Australians

and three New Zealanders from D Company 6RAR and more than 2,000 enemy troops. A total of 18 Australians were killed and 24 wounded. Those who fought in the Battle of Long Tan are among the 60,000 Australians whose service and sacrifice will be commemorated during this week’s Vietnam Veterans’ Day.

Margaret Mears. Lengthy discussion took place at the ordinary meeting regarding the future of the auxiliary. As some of our members are ageing and unable to cook for our street stalls anymore, we’ve decided to change our approach to fundraising with a monthly raffle on our

normal day. This is the fourth Saturday of each month. The money raised helps purchase items for the Treatment Room at the Hospital which has included a vaccine fridge and the chair to sit in while having your blood taken. The Defibrillator Monitor is ageing and

will need replacing soon, so that is on our wish list. We would like to thank everyone who has helped the auxiliary in the past. We would welcome new members and look forward to continued support for our hospital. We meet at the hospital at 2pm on the 4th Tuesday of the month.

This will be constructed between the two existing toilet buildings. The parking area is complete and the dump point will be installed by the end of August according to MidCoast Counicil.

A CABARET Evening will be held at Hawks Nest Golf Club on Saturday 3 September as a fundraising event for the Great Lakes Women’s Shelter (GLWS). The evening will commence at 6.00pm and includes a two course meal, music and dancing with entertainment provided by Merry Marsh and the Olde Tyme Rock ‘n’ Roll Band. Fundraising Committee member

John Cole said the evening in Hawks Nest is one of five fundraising events to be held throughout the region. “So far we have had pretty much sell out shows at the three previous locations and we are hoping for a similar result at Hawks Nest Golf Club,” he said. “All funds raised on the night will be go towards the ongoing running costs of GLWS Shelter.” The GLWS opened in January this year and

to tear it all down,” Mr Worth said. Premier Mike Baird announced the decision to ban greyhound racing in NSW last month after a report from a Special Commission of Inquiry showed systemic animal cruelty including mass greyhound killings. Mr Worth said Baird’s decision was based on a report that was full of incorrect information. “The report states that 68,000 dogs were slaughtered over a twelve year period, however a separate report done by Greyhound Racing NSW shows that approximately 6500 were humanely euthanised or rehomed in that period. quite a difference,” he said. “Statistics from the RSPCA show 11,000 domestic dogs are euthanised in NSW every year, but people aren’t stopped from owning dogs as pets even though not everyone is fit to be a pet owner.” Mr Worth said there are irresponsible individuals in any area, “but it’s the majority of people who are doing the right thing that are being penalised for the actions of a few.” Once the ban is in place, Mr Worth said many local businesses will be affected. “Greyhounds need the best of everything, including food, vitamins, transport, kennels, veterinarian care and many other

accessories,” he said. “Bulahdelah is an ideal stopover place for participants traveling to race venues, they let their dogs out, fill up with fuel and grab a coffee or something to eat, but this will end once the ban is endorsed.” Liberal MP Duncan Gay said he appreciates this decision has caused stress and angst for many people. “The passage of this bill will see a definite end date to greyhound racing in NSW,” Mr Gay said in Parliament. Under the ban, the entire $350 million industry will be shut down by 1 July next year.

In the recent case of Faukland and Shikia the Full Court of the Family Court considered an appeal by Mr Faukland who had been sentenced for contempt of court.

In June 2014 the Court restrained Mr Faukland from disposing a car. On 14 December 2014 Mr Faukland emailed Ms Shikia’s solicitor stating the car had been sold for $90,000 and that he had spent the money on gambling and drugs. The trial Judge then ordered that Mr Faukland was to provide to Ms Shikia contact details for the alleged purchaser or to deliver up possession of the car by 22 December 2014.

In August 2015 the trial judge found Appointments Fridays 2pm-6pm that Mr Faukland was in contempt of Court for failing to comply and 191 Myall Street sentenced him to three months Tea Gardens www.mullanelindsay.com.au imprisonment on two charges –

with the sentences to be served consecutively, but wholly suspended indefinitely.

Mr Faukland appealed, arguing that the terms should have been imposed concurrently - at the same time, not one after the other – due to his poor health and that the indefinite suspension was unjust.

The Full Court found that due to the gravity of the contempt – “wilful and flagrant and having had the effect of diminishing the pool of property available for distribution” – the imprisonment of six months was appropriate but did limit the period of suspension to 31 December 2018 – and restated the trial judge’s intention was that if Mr Faukland should lie or breach an order during the proceedings he will serve the six month sentence.

LOCAL greyhound owners expressed outrage and disappointment last week as the bill to ban greyhound racing in NSW moved swiftly through State Parliament’s Upper House. Bulahdelah greyhound owner and trainer Mick Worth said the ban on the “traditional iconic Australian pastime, hobby and social activity” was “unAustralian” and will affect many people’s lives. “There will be over ten thousand jobs lost statewide and many of these will be in smaller communities such as our own,” he said. “A number of owners and trainers in our area are still in shock and disbelief that their love, life, hobby and in some cases livelihoods surrounding these wonderful animals will be taken forever.” Mr Worth said most races bring prize money of around $350. “It’s not hard to see that it’s not about the money, but for the love of this beautiful canine and the lifetime involvement of friends and family that comes with it,” he said. “In many rural areas greyhound racing is nothing more than a social outlet for people, with friends and family coming together and occasionally winning a race.” Mr Worth said there are over thirty participants within a fifty kilometre radius of Bulahdelah including a trainer who had recently moved to the area. “He has spent thousands turning his property into his dream to now realise he may have

MANY students are one step closer to completing their Higher School Certificate (HSC) after submitting major projects for marking in the past few weeks. Bulahdelah Central School Year 12 student Jayden Lilley was relieved to have completed his Entertainment Unit which he designed and constructed for the practical component of the Industrial Technology Course. Jayden said he decided to make the large display unit to improve his woodworking skills. “I was used to making little boxes and tables and wanted to challenge myself with something different,” he said. “The curved decorative front panels required learning wood bending techniques and construction of many different joints.” Jayden’s project is made from local Sydney Blue Gum and features storage cabinets, front glass panels and LED lighting to illuminate the compartments. After spending more than 20 weeks completing the project, Jayden said he is very pleased with the end result. “Going through the construction process I never thought I would be smiling this much or feeling as proud as I am now,” Jayden told News Of The Area. “Seeing the finished product, I love it,” he said. Dylan Tooze’s futon sofa bed will take pride of place on the back deck of his home once marking is finalised.

With the latest addition, Jack and Thora Ireland now have eight children, 23 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. Mrs Ireland said she always wanted a big family.

“I planned the lot,” she said. “Originally, it was just going to be five children, but they were beautiful so I decided to have more.” With so many names to remember, it would be

said. “It’s better to have a good conclusion to a series than be ruined by excessive sequels.” Tim’s good friend Kant Richardson said she also enjoyed the book. “It brought a special kind of magic that only JK Rowling can,” she told News Of The Area. Both Tim and Kant hope to be able to see a stage production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in the near future.

FIVE generations of the Ireland family recently gathered in Bulahdelah to celebrate the arrival of the newest member of the family, two month old Ashton.

DEVOTEES and enthusiastic members of the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Family Research group were treated to a very special guest speaker at the weekend. Gail Davis, a leading archivist with the NSW State Records Department came to town, to give a talk and impart some of her 30 years of experience. “I adore history, I love archives and I love making records more available to the public,” Gail told the News Of The Area. Her talk focussed on

divorce, probate and school records, areas which many people were unaware were open to the public. When referring to divorce and probate papers, Gail warned, “Don’t start if you’re likely to be shocked, as some long hidden family secrets may finally come to light.” School records are another great source for those hunting for long lost family members or just curious to find out more about their heritage. Gail revealed how New South Wales school archives, include such gems as punishment books,

dating back to the good old days when students were caned or whipped and the reason why. Other tips included searching police gazettes and estate files. Enthusiast Janice Taylor summed up her 30 years of tracing her family history as an “addiction”, and many others at the meeting were in agreement. Merv celebrates 90 years By Daniel SAHYOUN KEEPING active and not smoking are the secrets to a long life according to Merv Nagle who recently celebrated his 90th Birthday. Merv marked the special occasion at his home in Tea Gardens surrounded by several generations of his family who had travelled from as far away as Perth for the celebrations. Maintaining his active lifestyle since retiring, Merv has voluntarily tended the grounds and gardens at Tea Gardens Public School for

more than a quarter of a century. During this time, Mr Nagle has seen four headmasters pass through the school and said he “plans on seeing five.” Mr Nagle told News Of The Area his association with the school began after one of his grandchildren told him the school was looking for a volunteer to help out. “I decided to take it on,” Mr Nagle said. “It started off as being a few days a week but I’ve been coming in every day since 2008.” In recognition of his

Mr Nagle worked in Real Estate in Sydney before retiring and moving to Tea Gardens with his wife in 1991. During this time, Mr Nagle said he has seen many changes at the school. “When I started, it was always difficult to clean the rainforest as there were sand

flies and mosquitoes,” he said. “It’s vastly different now, most of the old school buildings have been removed and replaced and there is a second oval.” In his younger days, Mr Nagle played rugby for the Gordon Club in North Sydney and only missed one out of 113 games due to an injury. He was also a keen golfer. Mr Nagle has three children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His advice to younger people is to take advantage of every moment. “You have to make the most of whatever opportunities you have and do the best you can to make the most of your life,” he said.

The reward at the end of Sunday’s marathon, was more than $800 donated on Jodie’s behalf and a celebratory lunch in Bondi. Money raised by Jodie and the other 17 AAA runners will help fund the Association’s “Surfers Healing Australia,” program. The project gives children with autism and

their families a fun, free day at the beach. But AAA says it goes much deeper than that. “The beach and day of surfing, empowers families to believe their kids “can.” By reaching its target of $35,000 the Autism Awareness Association can deliver the ‘beach’ program to over 600 Australians on the autism spectrum. Winda Woppa present status Dear News Of The Area,

THOUGHT I’d pass on some info to your (Winda Woppa) Residents Association about the recent works on Jimmys Beach. Large 2x1m hay bales have been placed along the edge of the Boulevarde as a trial to reduce sand movement over the road, and retain it on the beach (to date this work is nearing completion). It’s hoped the larger hay bales will also last longer than the smaller ones as it’s more difficult for people to climb over them. Council has invested time and money to source ‘weedfree’ hay bales, but we will continue to monitor what’s on site. Manipulation of sand was undertaken during July, using existing sand reserves on the beach. The priority of this exercise was to a) move existing sand into the pinch point and b) trial reprofiling at the eastern end of the beach. Given insufficient sand

available on the beach and sea conditions at the time it was no longer practicable to achieve the desired intertidal trial profile and a more uniform profile was created along the length of the Boulevard with the aim of providing seed sand for the pinch point. As yet, no significant work has been undertaken to develop formal accessways on the beach as there will continue to be further trucking campaigns in the near future. Similarly, no immediate revegetation work is being undertaken based on the expectation that the area will continue to be disrupted in the short term for initial trucking campaigns and subsequent construction of the sand transfer system pipeline. Weed control was undertaken on the vegetated strip to the western end of the Boulevarde during june, and this will continue in the new year. The recent east-coast

low has obviously removed sand again and Council is working with OEH for funding support (50:50 split) to undertake another trucking campaign (from the Winda Woppa stockpile) prior to summer and after summer (in the interim prior to the sand transfer system being installed and operational). Consultants (Cardno) are currently working with Council and OEH to develop the permanent sand transfer system. The consultants are exploring a variety of options which are being dictated by the site constraints, capital and operational costs. Though unrelated, dredging of the navigation channel to the west of Corrie Island is currently being undertaken, with the sand being deposited on the winda woppa stockpile. It is expected that this work will finish late August/early September. Aerial control of Bitou Bush on Corrie Island was undertaken in June to complement the onground weed control that has been undertaken by Worimi Green team throughout the year. Vanity Googling Dear News Of The Area, GO on, admit it. You’re guilty of vanity Googling. We all do it and we all justify doing so. My explanation is that I’m knocking on heaven’s door and I want to know what kind of a cyber record I’ll leave behind. I’ve lived a crowded life: many countries, many jobs, many partners. My memory is overloaded and failing but I didn’t realise just how unreliable it has become until I vanity Googled. We were certainly living in London at the outbreak of World War 2. To this day I am something of a pacifist, however I’m damned if I recall being a prominent young conscientious objector who apparently recanted to be a RNZAF fighter pilot in France in 1944. Dear News Of The Area, ANOTHER perfect winter’s day, too good not to join the Thursday Walkers on their sojourn to one of Newcastle’s best loved attractions, Blackbutt Reserve. Blackbutt Reserve, over 182 acres of bush land in the suburb of New Lambton, started life as a Depression era subdivision that was doomed to failure. The then New Lambton council purchased the land for a public recreational reserve and in 1938, on the inception of Newcastle City Council, it was placed in their trusteeship where it has been ever since. Much work and many improvements over the years have resulted in today’s fabulous family playground and tourist attraction. Two walks to choose from

Correction to Council statement Dear News Of The Area,

AS President of the Hawks Nest /Tea Gardens Progress Association, I feel compelled to write to correct a statement in last weeks edition (11 August 2016) of the News of the Area (Myall Coast). Under the heading ‘Projects and roadworks’ on page 8, and in particular the

item relating to Kingfisher Ave, Hawks Nest, MidCoast Council has reported that ‘wheel stops are to be removed along the footpath on Kingfisher Ave between the Singing Bridge and Ibis St as per request and grant funding from Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens Progress Association’. This project was initiated

by the Progress Association and we were fortunate enough to acquire a State Government grant of $15,500 which was transferred to Council as our contribution towards the improvement of the path along Kingfisher Ave. However, although the Association was a financial partner in this project, I

want to make it quite clear to the community that the Progress Association has never suggested that the “wheel stops” (kerb blocks) be removed. In fact, all the emails and correspondence that has been exchanged with Council on this matter have expressed the view that the kerb blocks should be RELOCATED closer to

the white edge line so that the barrier is maintained and the shared pedestrian/cycle path can be widened to meet Australian Standards. Since Council staff have elected to completely remove the blocks which previously separated traffic from pedestrians and cyclists, there is no longer any physical barrier between the movements. The Progress Association believes this arrangement

is inherently unsafe and, therefore, it is not endorsed by the Association. If you are unhappy with the current arrangement, please direct your complaints to Kumar Kuruppu at MidCoast Council on 6591 7222 or kumar.kuruppu@greatlakes. nsw.gov.au Trevor Jennings President Hawks Nest /Tea Gardens Progress Association

It was a Soldiers Point team of B. Dunn, N. Downes and Lee Such that won the big money. They were undefeated in their 5 games. Also winning their 5 games was the team of N. Brook, B. Ahoy and Matt Norris who finished second. Another team from Soldiers Point finished third winning 4 games. The best performed Tea Gardens team finished 6th. Barry Drayton, Steve Jones and Steve Pell won three games drew one and lost won in a very credible performance. The word is that the tournament was very well run and organised and many players have already made plans to play in this event next year. Many, many thanks go to the major sponsor First National Real Estate Hawks Nest, organising supremo Warren Gooley and the many staff and volunteers that made the tournament an outstanding success. A big thank you also to umpires Kathy Rimmer and Bob Weir as well as Sue Johnson and Robyn Webster for their catering efforts and to John Younghusband for scoring the tournament.

10 August: In contrast to last week, mother-nature provided a great day for bowls today. The weekly Nominated Triples competition was played with 48 bowlers participating.

The almost predictable winners were Neil Kibble, Col Amos and David Rimmer. They returned a mammoth +45 to run away with the money. Maybe they should be on a handicap! The team of Ken Devlin K. Ellis and J. Ellis came in second on a respectable +38 from Barry Goode, Bruce

Everitt and Bill Thrift. 12 August: Friday Jackpot Pairs saw only 14 players competing in near perfect conditions. There was one game of triples and the winners, with the lowest winning margin of +6 were; Kevin Barby, Vic Garlick and Tom Parkinson. The $440.00 jackpot was not won. 13/14 August: The big news this week has to be the presentation of the : TEA GARDENS COUNTRY CLUB AND MOTEL FIRST NATIONAL REAL ESTATE HAWKS NEST OPEN MEN’S TWO BOWL TRIPLES TOURNAMENT. Big hits by Matt Croese, Aden Callaghan, Daniel Evans, Darren Weatherall, and Jack Croese. Josh Page was in for his hat trick off the day taking the score to Karuah 30 Hexham 16. Hexham were next to score and convert taking it to Roo’s 30 Jets 22. Just before the full time hooter was sounded Dylan Foley was in for his second

season. Cessnock opened the scoring, but could not match Myall Rivers measured response. Led by Dylan Long, the boys went up a gear to shut out their opposition. The return of Billy Watt, and an elusive effort from Ryver McDonald sparked the side to a strong win. The 13’s will play Raymond Terrace in a finals game at Keith Barry Oval on Saturday 1pm, to progress to the grand final. The side was defeated in the corresponding game last year. The “JR Richards” 15’s played Waratah Mayfield in the following game after a tense lead up. Defeated by the Cheetahs in the past two games, Coach Craig O’Neill was confident his charges could reverse the trend. Early tries to Tom

of the day, and Sam’s 4th conversion of the day taking the final score to Karuah Roos 36 Hexham Jets 22. With all the games over for the season the Karuah Roos finished in 3rd spot on the ladder with 20 points. Players Player 3 points went to #1 Mitch O’Bryan, 2 points #11 Ben Langdon and 1 point #5 Dylan Foley. Coaches Award went to #18 Nathan Ritzau and Man on the Hill went to #1 Mitch O’Bryan. Next week is the Qualifying finals 2nd against 3rd @ Lakeside Oval Raymond Terrace The Karuah Roos will take on the Gloucester kick off @ 11.40 Saturday. Lidbury got Myall River to a good lead. The Cheetah’s hit back with strong individual play, but were rebuffed by committed defence. Half back Will Smith led the defensive rout, supported by Kye Cotterill. Cotterill’s explosive hit ups were keeping Waratah on the back foot. Centre, Bradley Marshall scored 3 tries. The third was on the back of some impressive lead up work from Jyson Wolfram, who got a “Gidley” pass ten metres out for Marshall to cross untouched. Myall River won by 36 points to 14. The 15’s will also play Raymond Terrace at Windale in the finals game on Saturday. Kick off will be at 10:20 am
