By Margie TIERNEY OUR local Red Cross members are once again donning their aprons and heading into the kitchen to create some delicious delights for their annual ‘Big Cake Bake’. The ‘Big Cake Bake’ has become one of the major fundraisers on the Red Cross calendar and a very popular day with the Tea Gardens locals, who get to enjoy some home baking while donating to a very worthy cause. While the members create yummy cakes and slices to delight our sweet cravings, they are also open to the community helping out. “Donations of cakes, biscuits, scones or

love oysters, then this Festival ticks the box. Last year 180 people entered the draw to compete in the event to find the quickest oyster eaters. For the kids, there’s a children’s activity tent and for the grown ups lots of stalls, live performances, vintage cars and in the evening, the James Bulley Band will be playing at the Karuah RSL. The Festival kicks off at 10am on Saturday 20 October and this year a section of Barclay Street will be closed to traffic, free shuttle buses cruising around town to get Festival goers to all the action. “Last year we estimated we had 7 thousand people at the Festival so we’re hoping for similar numbers this Saturday,” Ross Parr said. New Book Launch By Margie TIERNEY
EIGHT women from North Arm Cove have spent the last three years creating what could only be described as a ‘labour of love’. The women have written a book of fictional short stories, all relating to the North Arm

MKEG Secretary Ian Morphett said that despite the early rain, it turned out to be a very successful day for the Group. They raised more than $300 from donations, raffle tickets and merchandise sales and new membership fees. The raffle winner of two bottles of wine was a local, Diane.
Artist, Sylvia Reczek took out the honour. The community is being invited to the book launch which will be conducted by Fellowship of Australian Writers President, Trevar Langlands. When making loans to children, you will probably be nagged by conflicting emotions and truisms. Should I document the loan for clarity? But they look so happy together and can use it more now than after I die. I worked hard to earn that money; what if there’s another GFC and I need to be repaid? It’s all peace now, but should I prepare for war? Will a stitch in time save 9? I cannot over emphasise the need for clarity and documentation when making loans to children. If it is a loan, it needs to be documented and shown that there is an intention to create legal relations. The loan document should record the amount(s) being advanced; the interest rate, if any; the term of the loan; and when it must be repaid. If it is a large enough amount and you want security, then you
should insist on a registered mortgage. Speak about the “elephant in the room” with your child’s partner/spouse, as awkward and difficult as that might be. It is a loan to your child and it will need to be repaid. In the event of a relationship breakup there is no guarantee the family courts will treat your loan as a debt of both parties. However, if there is proper documentation and you abide by it, you will have a far better chance to recover your loan and continue to be able to support your child in the future. Liabilities that are vague, uncertain, and/ or unlikely to be enforced are likely to be treated differently. The lack of documentation and stated intentions may be one circumstance that persuades a court that it is unjust and inequitable to treat your loan as a true liability that needs to be repaid.

New Police Station
Please support the advertisers within the News Of The Area
By Margie TIERNEY THE NSW State Government has revealed some of its plans for the $1 million upgrade of the Tea Gardens Police Station. The Hawks Nest/ Tea Gardens Progress Association has been acting on behalf of the community to find out where and how the money is going to be spent, following the announcement of the funding boost by Premier Gladys Berejiklian back in June. Gordon Grainger from the Progress Association
received this message from the Police Minister’s Office. “The NSW Government is absolutely committed to delivering a new police station for Tea Gardens to ensure our Officers have the best possible resources to do their jobs. “ “As with any building project, the initial stages include design, planning approval and tendering for construction, all of which will be completed this financial year.” “This will also include an opportunity for community consultation as part of the planning approval process.”
in the Old Library in Hawks Nest. The first lecture will be “Conspiracy Theories, Real or Imagined”, presented by Neil Renfree. Lyn said, “Please come along to the Presentation to gather information about our classes in Art, Theatre, Garden Club, Friends of Film, Writers Group, Reading for Pleasure, Choir, Fitness, French Language and Culture, Photography and Balance Exercises For enquiries you can email, myallu3a@gmail. com, or phone 4007 2171. “Construction of the new Police Station, which is fully budgeted, will then occur during the 2019/20 financial year.” The Police Minister’s Office added, “As I discussed previously, it is a very substantial project so a lot of money will be spent on design etc.” “I’m also really glad that they are planning on doing community consultation around the process which I’m sure you’ll be happy to see!” Police will hold a meeting with the community on Thursday 13 December at the Tea Gardens Primary School.

Dancing in the Streets By Margie TIERNEY THEY were dancing in the streets in Tea Gardens last Saturday night after a great day of fun at this year’s Myall River Festival. A little bit of rain in the early morning miraculously disappeared to be replaced by sunny skies and thousands of revellers out to enjoy a raft of activities along the glorious Myall Riverfront. “This was a festival put on for the community by the community, our volunteers working for months to ensure a great day was had by all,” President of the Chamber of Commerce, Graham Lang said. Nearly 80 stalls lined Marine Drive, turning

the street into a giant marketplace. Local school children, dance groups and line dancers entertained the crowds in the morning and of course no Festival would be complete without the Greenpaws Dog Show with special Judge, former NSW Governor Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair. Vintage cars from the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Motor Club drew plenty of attention and some lucky punters scoffed down plenty of prawns at the Prawn Eating competition. On the river our teenagers made a dash for cash in the Lazy Paddles kayaks. The little yellow ducks
q took to the water to raise money for the Tea Gardens Primary School, and not one escaped the river thanks to the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Life Savers on their jet skis. For the bargain lovers, the Pearls Group and their ‘Buy My Wardrobe’ campaign raised over $3,000 which will be heading west to our farmers. “This money will be going to the CWA at Dungog,” Kerry Patterson said. “The Country Women’s Association knows where the money will be most

The other flyer titled, ‘Has Your Man Been Tested’, addresses female partners, suggesting they ‘nudge their men in the direction of their GPs for a chat’. Palm Lake Open Pairs Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA
10 OCTOBER Under leaden skies, the weekly Nominated Triples competition had just a short interlude before the heavens opened up drenching both greens, and the players, in minutes. I guess we’ll all try again next week. 13 October The rain persisted with the start of the much awaited, Palm Lake Open Pairs today. With some late withdrawals, the field was whittled down to 19 teams at commencement of play. There were several visiting teams attending the tournament and if my experience is anything to go by, they could certainly bowl. The starting time was put back to account for a passing shower and when play did commence it was in the midst of a constant drizzle. Players on the sodden grass green threw “touch” bowling out the window and had to resort to brute strength to get bowls near
the target. Despite the conditions some good bowls were played with the proven “mud runners” coming to the fore. The weather cleared during the afternoon to allow some improvement in conditions. Three games of ten ends were played today with the short-priced favourites opening up a gap on the field. 14 October Overnight showers cleared away today and bright and sunny environment greeted the teams setting out to complete their five matches. Despite the “outside” entries it was the local teams that filled the top five places Two teams finished on with four wins and a draw but it was the team of Karen and Ron Green finishing on top with a greater margin and more ends won than the team finishing second; Vicki Rankin and Sean Mearrick. Dale Winter, partnered by Ken Devlin finished third with four wins followed by Olive McKeown and Danny Johnson. Judi Polak and Tony Coomer did well finishing in fifth place.
Our sincere thanks to our sponsor for this tournament, Palm Lake Resorts for their wonderful support, the organisers from the Men’s Bowling Club Committee, the ladies who supplied lunch on Saturday and all the players who participated Let’s do it again next year! In other news: The Selectors are calling for nominations to fill places in our Pennant sides for the 2019 season commencing next March. Players are encouraged to participate and support our Club. The Women’s Bowling Club Oncology day is fast approaching and will commence next Friday 19th October commencing with morning tea ta 9.30 am. More bowling follows the next day with a visit from the Kotara Travelling bowlers. Players are needed to provide some opposition and to show some Tea Gardens hospitality to our guests. Play will commence at 1.00 pm. The next day, Sunday bowls will be joined by a team calling themselves the “Fingal Bay Ferrets”.

Competition for TGWBC Robyn Beaumont scoring 154 v Maynie Roberts 106. Thanks to Karen McPhie for Umpiring, Kayelene Pearson for Marking, Jo Younghusband, Controlling Body and our Social Committee for your hard work. Following play, all members enjoyed the post final lunch catered for by Myall Bistro and Café. Triple celebrations today, the finals lunch, Dorothy Thompson was presented with her 30 year membership of TGWBC badge and a special birthday for Dorothy. It’s hard to believe that our longest serving member has reached the age of 90. Dorothy is still a “force to be reckoned with” on and off the green. Congratulations Dorothy, your amazing. Birthday greetings to Jill McBride as well. Bette Saillard was the lucky raffle winner

q Robyn Beaumont winner of the Open Consistency Competition with Maynie Roberts, Runner Up.
(Performing before & after the Cup)
THROUGHOUT the ages, people have been concerned about song lyrics with each new generation whipping up a reinvigorated state of moral panic. In hindsight, some of those songs seem positively innocent, but they were still about sex and drugs. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was clearly a reference to LSD, Elvis was constantly wanting a little more action, Afternoon Delight was the go-to tune for toey Baby Boomers, Do That To Me One More Time wasn’t referring to a tooth extraction, and so on. Today, the lyrics are far more explicit, but also harder to understand due to a whole new era of singers who mumble so much they are incomprehensible. Your daughter may not even hear the words let alone be able to make sense of them. Interpretations can also vary over time. The Divinyls’ I Touch Myself, formerly the song of choice for men’s pre-marital booze ups, has now been given new life as a Breast Cancer Awareness anthem, a fitting tribute since Chrissy Amphlett battled the cancer before her death. I think it is the swearing that annoys a lot of parents. I used to mute swear words when listening to music in the car, but then the kids got sick of that so they said they would just make a ‘beep’ sound whenever a swear word occurred. The obvious issue here was that they already knew the exact moment the singer was about to hurl an expletive-laden sentence. It defeated the purpose and instead drew attention to it. You could perhaps ask her to only make playlists that don’t include obscene language or dubious themes or angst or sexual deviance, but I don’t know how many times you can put up with Coldplay’s The Scientist. It even led Gwyneth to a conscious uncoupling. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 9th October: A “full on day” at bowls for our ladies today. The final of the Open Consistency Competition, Maynie Roberts v Robyn Beaumont. Plus Round 1 of the Minor Pairs Competition and of course social bowls. Format for play for the social bowlers was 3 bowls Triples, 18 ends. A drawn game 21 all for Ingrid Luck, Dawn May and Dale Winter v Lyn Nightingale, Pam Gilchrist and Deyonne Page. A good win for Bev Stephens, Lily Smith and Christine Fossey 23 v Dawn Jones, Dorothy Thompson and Loretta Baker 11. Goes without saying Christine’s team were the money winners. Results for the Minor Pairs are as follows Judi Polak and Lynda Richards 16 v Sandra Leisemann and Karen Green 14. Francis Betar and Bette Saillard 18 v Sheril Johnson and Julie Kennedy 12. Bev Rhodes and Lynne Green 18 v Carol Hayden and Jill McBride 14. The winners precede to the semi final to be contested on Thursday 11th October. Finally and most importantly the result of the Open Consistency Competition. This battle lasted for 26 ends, a great display of precision bowling by both competitors. Robyn took the lead from the beginning holding an 8 shot advantage at completion of the 7th end. Maynie narrowed Robyn’s lead to just 2 shots over the next 2 ends, but that was as close as it got. Winner of the Open Consistency

This application is a ‘non-claimant’ application, an application made by persons to the Federal Court of Australia (Federal Court) who are not claiming native title themselves but are seeking a determination that native title does not exist in relation to the area described. The applicant has a non-native title interest in the area, set out in their application as described in the notice below.
