End of the run for greyhound owners THE local greyhound racing community has been left devastated after the bill to ban the sport in New South Wales was passed in Parliament last week. Following a marathon debate stretching into the early hours of the morning, the Greyhound Racing Prohibition Bill 2016 was passed 49 votes to 30. Local greyhound owner Debbie Robinson said many people will be financially ruined by the ban. “There is a lot of

bitterness within the greyhound community, they are angry that this is being taken away from them and many people’s livelihood are now gone,” Ms Robinson said. “The passing of the ban will not just stop racing itself, it will also result in the destruction of the social aspect of it and for most people in the Industry, this is their entire lives.” Ms Robinson said Greyhound Racing NSW had been working towards reforms before NSW Premier

opposition to the Bill during the 12 hour Parliamentary debate and thanked the many people who took the time to share their views with her. Ms Washington acknowledged that the “hardworking and decent people of the greyhound industry have every right to be angry and hurt, particularly those

in rural and regional communities.” “The only recognition in this bill of the pain that will be inflicted on people is one line which states that no compensation is payable. It is one thing for the Government to shut down an entire industry, but it reaches a new level of wrong when significant losses will be incurred and the Government has made no provision whatsoever to support

them,” Ms Washington said in Parliament. “This is no way to treat the hard working caring people that I have met. It is no way to treat the majority of people in the industry who have never done anything wrong. At the end of the day, how can anyone be compensated for the loss of a way of life or for the loss of a social network that is depended on

every day,” she said. The Legislation was passed around 3.40am. Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead voted in favour of the ban whilst Kate Washington voted against. Under the ban, anyone participating in or organising a race after 1 July next year will face an $11,000 fine and one-year in jail.

involved in the battle of Long Tan, I was able to locate an APC from my unit (A Sqn 3rd Cavalry Unit) that played a significant and important role in its outcome.” Bruce served in that unit during 1970 -71 as a National Serviceman. He was able to locate inside the memorial, one of the vehicles he commanded during his time in South Viet Nam. Bruce reflected to News Of The Area that he is glad he was able to visit the battle site in 2011 as

the future of future visits may now be in doubt. There was an underlying theme expressed by the Governor General and the Prime Minister aimed at veterans of all wars but in particular, Vietnam. Its message was that all veterans should look after their colleagues as the Australian community at large were less than supportive of them. Indeed, many vets were so reviled on

their return, that it is widely held that this nonacceptance is a prime reason for the many suicides that have affected vets in the times since that war. Bruce remembers well much of that nonacceptance and angst. Another highlight of the commemoration, was the Last Post ceremony. It takes place inside the Australian War Memorial every single day at dusk.

OPAL CARD: Roger Dixon at Bulahdelah Post Office.

Along with Tea Gardens Post Office and Hawks Nest Newsagency, the addition of Bulahdelah now means Myall Coast residents and visitors have access to three Opal Card outlets. Mr Roger Dixon from Bulahdelah Post Office said Bulahdelah is a very accessible location for people to top up or recharge Opal Cards. “It’s convenient not only for the residents of Bulahdelah, but also for visitors and people passing through,” Mr Dixon said. “With no Opal Card outlets in the Forster or Taree areas, being on the highway makes Bulahdelah an easy stopover for people travelling past to make their purchases.” As Opal Cards are now the only way to pay for public transport, Mr Dixon expects a strong demand for the service. Bulahdelah Post Office and Holiday Credit Union Agency are open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday and 9.00am to 12.00noon most Saturdays.

Successful Appeal on Interim Parenting Orders by Rose Laffan

In the recent decision of Edgar and Strofield the Full Court of the Family Court allowed the mother’s appeal from interim parenting orders. In 2015 the mother changed her residence, approximately 88 km from where she and the children previously lived. While the mother continued to facilitate the children spending alternate weekend time with the father, the father filed an application with the court seeking an injunction requiring the mother Appointments Fridays 2pm-6pm to return to the previous address. 191 Myall Street The father also applied for the Tea Gardens children to live with each party on www.mullanelindsay.com.au a week about basis.

The trial judge ordered the children to be returned to the previous address and implemented a graduated increase in time that the children spend with the father. The mother appealed. The Full Court accepted the mother’s appeal argument that the trial judge had focused on the issue of relocation when, on an interim hearing, the issue was the amount of time the children should be spending with the father. The Full Court made interim orders for the children to continue to spend each alternate weekend, and some school holiday time, with the father. The matter will now continue.

IN early June we were called out to a baby koala on the ground in the Swan Bay area of Hawks Nest following a cold and bitter night. Her mother was in the tree above. Despite encouraging the baby to climb the tree to her mother and waiting nearly an hour for mum to collect her, it was decided she needed to be taken into care. We named her Louise, after the lady whose home she was found in, and took her to the group that cares for our koalas, Hunter Koala Preservation Society (HKPS) on the south side of Port Stephens. On arrival into care, she weighed a miniscule 356 gm (a full grown koala weighs 10 kg or more). Over the next few weeks she seemed to be thriving on six hourly feeds, day and night, on a special formula for marsupials. She gained 466 gms. Suddenly one night she began

suffering severe diarrhoea going downhill over the following 24 hours and then sadly passed away. Because of the unexpected nature of her death, she was sent to the University of Sydney Veterinary School for a post mortem. She was found to have a twisted bowel which may have been brought on by formula she was eating rather than her mother’s milk. The Australia Zoo, who is the primary authority on koala biology, advises that the success rate for artificially rearing preweaned baby koalas is only 10%, particularly if the baby is found on the ground and not in mum’s pouch. Currently there is no specific artificial formula for koalas who have a significantly different biology to other marsupials because they eat eucalyptus leaves. Research is going on to try to develop a koala formula and, if successful, the hand-rearing success rate should improve.

Sage is proving quite the show Fishing Concerns By Sue ANDERSON IN August, the Tea Gardens Baptist Church’s free concert, Live! Live! Live!, featured Sage, one of the regular bands. As usual, the audience rocked along to their foot tapping popular music and

an added bonus during this month’s afternoon tea break was a short bracket of songs provided by a group of enthusiastic seniors. Mostly beginners, they sang and accompanied themselves on ukuleles to the delight of the audience. The ukulele players have

been coached over a period of some months by Karuah resident, Julie Hughes. Julie, an accomplished musician, has been teaching ukulele for many years. Recently, while on a holiday on a cruise ship, Julie saw how much fun beginners could have learning to play

as a group and decided to offer this experience to local residents. She is always happy for new-comers to join the group which meets in the Baptist church hall. Live! Live! Live! is held on the third Thursday of every month.

By Margie TIERNEY PORT Stephens MP Kate Washington headed to State Parliament with a group of concerned commercial fishers and their families last week, to voice their anguish and frustration with the NSW Government’s new restructure of the industry. Of primary concern, is the Adjustment Subsidy Program. While the Baird Government is providing a $16 million package to assist commercial fishers to transition into the new share program, Labor believes it could cost some fishers up to $450,000 to buy shares and to operate as they have done in the

past. Members of the Greens, Christian Democrat Party, Shooters, Fishers and Farmers parties attended the meeting. Among those to address the packed room in Parliament House, was 13 year old Maddison Blanch, daughter of a commercial fisher. “My father is a 3rd generation fisher,” she said. “My Dad loves what he does but, because of reforms, my dad needs to buy more shares to continue to work as he does now for 2017. So basically he needs to buy back his job.” The Adjustment Subsidy scheme is due to begin this week.

Bridges Over The Myall By Daniel SAHYOUN A PASSION for bridges led Carolyn Burrows to writing and publishing a book titled “Bridges Over The Myall.” The book details the history 15 bridges in the local area including major bridges in Tea Gardens and Bulahdelah and a number of smaller historical structures on private land. Mrs Burrows said the idea for her book came after a small bridge was washed away in flood waters in 2000.

“I realised that little bridges in the area were going need replacing,” Mrs Burrows said. “They have great historical value so I thought it was important to collate all the information together.” Bridges over the Myall River stretch all the way from Tea Gardens to the Upper Myall and date back to 1892. In her book, Mrs Burrows recalls the “rickety wooden bridge” that was used as the punt approach on the Hawks Nest side of the river.

“As children we enjoyed the trip across the river and trying to see little crabs and toadfish through the cracks in the Bridge,” she said. “It was a nice rest for our legs when walking to the beach from Myall Street in Tea Gardens.” Mrs Burrows has a long history with the local area dating back five generations of her family in Tea Gardens. When she moved to Markwell in 1984 she quickly realised how important the bridges in the local area

were, especially in regards to people and stock movement. Mrs Burrows funded the book herself and said it took 10 years to complete. “I saved my money for years, that’s probably why it took so long, and life got in the way as well,” she told News Of The Area. “Bridges Over The Myall” can be purchased at Bulahdelah Post Office, Tea Gardens and Bulahdelah Visitor Information Centres, Hawks Nest and Bulahdelah Newsagents and the Bulahdelah Rural Transaction Centre.

COUNCIL’S ridiculous decision to pull down Bulahdelah cricket nets on 23 October 2015 without consulting with anyone has gone from bad to worse. The community quickly formed a new cricket club so that we may liaise with council. In November 2015 the committee attended the council meeting in Bulahdelah where this heated topic was first on the agenda. We were promised by the General Manager that this issue would quickly be rectified. With numerous futile phone conversations Council still sent contractors to the nets without meeting with the committee as promised to discuss the proposed replacement nets. After 11 months children have gone without

one of the few facilities to keep them off the streets and to give them physical exercise. Our cricket team has their first home game on 8 October and cannot practice. Several conversations with upper management staff have given us every excuse under the sun. The General Manager has stood up to 2 community meetings and said council will right the wrong, but still nothing. At the last meeting the General Manager also spoke about the council merger and surrounding himself and the new council with good employees… may we suggest that you uphold your values as stated on your website in working with and for the community to build strong and positive relationships. We are frustrated, disappointed, and “12 months to right a wrong is just not good enough!”

Sean has served in the RAAF as an Avionics Technician for 11 years and has missed many special family occasions, including Father’s Day last year due to deployment. Sean told News Of The Area, in any given year he can be away from home for up to six months. “It’s very difficult because you miss out on so much time with your family,” he said. “I’ve missed two Christmases and everyone’s birthday at least once during the time I’ve been away.” Sean said when he is serving on a long mission, his thoughts are constantly of his family and he counts down the days until he can return home and see them. Daughter’s Mindy, Polly, Annie and Josie keep in constant contact with their father through phone calls, social media and emails. Thirteen-year old Annie said her father “is definitely one of a kind because he’s so caring.” “He’s always there for me even when he is away,” Annie said. “I can give him a call at any time and he will help me with anything I need including my homework.” Eleven-year old Polly told

Breakfast in bed, a gift and a family picnic at the beach are all part of the special day planned. Sean said the best gift of all was being home. “I’m definitely looking forward to Father’s Day this year, because I’ll be with my family,” he said.

Public space funding SIGNIFICANT funds will be pumped into the region’s public reserves Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead has announced. Mr Bromhead said the NSW Government will invest close $60,000 to preserve Myall Lakes’ important public reserves and community hubs. “Public reserves in our region such as sportsgrounds, showgrounds, community halls, walking tracks and local parks are valued places which are used by our local community every day,” Mr Bromhead said. “This funding is not only vital to the success of our regional communities, but also supports the role our professional and volunteer managers play in the ongoing management of the reserves. “This funding will allow our local organisations to implement the improvements required to ensure these important places can continue to be enjoyed by our local community now and into the future. “I’m thrilled to see that the

money we’ve secured for each of the successful projects will go to good use.” The 2016/17 funding allocation from the Public Reserves Management Fund Program is part of an $18 million annual program of grants and loans from the NSW Government to support the development, maintenance and protection of the public reserves. Highlights of the 2016/17 Public Reserves Management Fund Program for Myall Lakes are: • $26,741for the Bulahdelah Showground to supply and install a lighting tower and electrical wiring of cattle sheds. • $8,000 for eradication and management of noxious weeds on Crown Land at numerous sites. • $24,685 for the replacement of wooden piers under Caffreys Flat Hall with brick piers and concrete footings. “As part of my recent Electorate Tour I was able to meet with the successful groups and share the good news,” Mr Bromhead said. “This program is just one example of the NSW
