existence of the de facto relationship. The relationship can exist between 2 persons of different sexes or between 2 persons of the same sex. It need not be an exclusive relationship. Cohabitation can be relevant but is by no means determinative. The public aspects can vary from secretive to attendance at many family occasions. Ultimately, however each case turns on its own facts, and the 2 person’s recollections of events can vary widely. It is therefore difficult to determine what is, and isn’t, a de facto relationship and whether 2 persons interactions amount to couple, living together on a genuine domestic basis. LOTS of school holiday fun ahead at the Tea Gardens Library this coming January. For all our local youngsters, or if you’re here on holidays, there are some special activities on offer to fire up the imagination. ‘A Bugs Life’, is a Summer Reading Club activity with the team from Manning Regional Art Gallery creating a colony of curious creatures using spots and tape. It’s aimed at children from 5 years and over and is a supervised activity being held at the Library on Wednesday 9 January from 9.30am to 11am. The following week, ‘Wearable Art’ will have your children or grandchildren creating stylish accessories from off cuts, scraps and loose ends.
o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
This year we have decided to do a Secret Santa for the adults to take the pressure off at Christmas time with just one gift each. What do you think?
The craft afternoon is being held on Wednesday 14 January from 2.30pm to 4pm and again it’s a supervised activity for ages 8 to 15 years old. And then there’s a first at the Library. “For the first time in 15 years we’re going to be showing movies at the Library,” Library Chris Shelley told News Of The Area. The movie ‘Maya The Bee’ will be screened in the Library on Wednesday 23 January from 2.30 to 4pm. It’s rated G and all ages are welcome but parents must supervise youngsters 5 years and under. “We’ll take 20 to 30 children by bookings and they can bring along their own water or juice and cushion and we’ll have some popcorn,” Chris said. Chris added, “We’re hoping to grow the idea and screen movies for adults as well in the future in the genre of ‘Mamma Mia’ for example.” Now all these activities need to be booked by visiting www.midcoastlibraries. com.au or popping into the Library ahead of time. And just a reminder, the Tea Gardens Library will be closed over the Christmas New Year period from 5pm on Friday 21 December, re-opening on Wednesday 2 January at 9am. Librarian Carol Johnson and Chris Shelly ask that you don’t use the shute during that time to return books unless absolutely necessary.
Craft Group ends years Dear News Of The Area WEDNESDAY 12 December, the last day for the Wednesday Craft Group for 2018, began with our AGM and ended with a very satisfactory luncheon at Mumms. A fitting day after a very successful year in which we were able to donate $1000 to the Red Cross Drought appeal, $600 to the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Clinic Bus and the Rural Fire Brigade. Another $600, takings from our yearly Biggest Morning Tea were forwarded to the Cancer Council. Handmade gifts were presented to Meals on Wheels for each of their recipients and a wonderful array of gifts were delivered to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. Today our Christmas raffle was drawn: 1st Betty Stoope, 2nd Yvonne Pagett, 3rd Heather Cooper, 4th Terri and 5th Belle. Congratulations I’m sure you’ll all be very happy with your winnings. Without this communities very generous support of our raffles none of the above donations would be possible. We grew in size this year welcoming nine new members and though we’re not a large group we enjoy doing our craft in a relaxed friendly atmosphere and have several interesting outings each year. If you would like to join us next year we start back at 9am Wednesday 16th January in the Community Hall, Booner Street,Hawks Nest. We wish one and all a safe and happy Festive Season and best wishes for 2019.

Mrs EL, Salt Ash Dear Ms KP, IN THEORY I think Secret Santa is a fantastic idea. Being a one gift option, it saves lots of swearing and lots of landfill. In reality, it can be just as fraught. First of all, because it is ‘secret’, you go through the rigmarole of picking a name out of a hat. Then the complaints start: ‘I don’t want Maria. She’s too difficult to buy for.’; ‘I got Jim last year, I’m not having him twice’; ‘I just selected my own name.’ And on it goes. It can actually go for longer than a game of UNO with a seven-yearold, which is a mighty long time. The next thing that happens, from my experience, is your other half will say, ‘I got your mum, but you know her so much better than I do; can you just pick something up, you’re going shopping anyway.’ Thus defeating the entire purpose of the stress-free Secret Santa concept. Then there’s the price issue. We always had a fifty-dollar limit, but my mum would not only buy something double the price, but make disparaging comments about those who managed to abide by the rules, thinking they were doing the right thing. The phrase ‘tight as a fish’s arsehole’ springs to mind. This year, to keep things simple, all adults are buying their own gifts, wrapping them themselves, and then feigning surprise when they unwrap something they actually want, within their price range, and without any withering gazes, or ‘I feel as though you don’t even know me’ eye rolls, or ‘Did you keep the receipt’ rudeness, or ‘Where on God’s green earth will I wear this? Do you think I’m a prostitute?’ glares. I think the day will go off swimmingly, particularly after sixteen rum balls. I can’t wait. Carpe diem. Jasminda.

Giant Garage Sale for Men’s Shed By Margie TIERNEY THERE are lots of handymen and women rejoicing this year after grabbing a bargain at the Men’s Shed’s annual garage sale. John Adkins told News Of The Area, “We had a great day,” he said, “it’s mainly to get rid of excess equipment
that comes in during the year.” “A lot of tools and gear we get donated might not be working, if they’re electrical or tools that need fixing, the guys repair them and get them in good working order,” John said. The garage sale raised nearly $1,000 for the Men’s
Shed, money which goes to buying more equipment and supplies. “We sold toys, rocking horses, wind spinners, all sorts of things which could be used for Christmas gifts, were sold.” There are just under 50 members of the Men’s Shed and the doors are open four

AFTER an annual break, the grass green at Karuah opened again this week. A sapphire blue sky and an emerald green rink, complimented Karuah, a community known as “The pearl of Port Stephens”. Club President Sam Rees welcomed players back onto the green and said, “A pleasant afternoon’s roll up was a great way to get the bowling year rolling.”
A very social and diverse group of different genders, ages and experience levels came together Thursday afternoon to play the green “in”. The serenity of the last 7 weeks was interrupted by good natured banter and friendly competition as 50 bowlers took to the green overlooking the Karuah river. A deeply satisfied

RECENTLY, the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club created history by winning a World Championship Gold Medal at Glenelg Beach in Adelaide. Now the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving family of Peta, Craig and Rex Shelton has achieved another first, all taking to the same boat to compete in the Whale Cup at Macksville/Scotts Head. “Peta, Craig and Rex, as in Mum, Dad and Son, all rowed in the same crew,” Peter Rogers told News Of The Area. “It’s never been done before, and especially special for Peta after what she has gone through recently.” For the past 11 months, Peta Shelton, has been undergoing cancer treatment, involving chemo, radiation and surgery, just three months ago. Peta Shelton said, “I never thought I would ever achieve this enormous milestone after the
treatment I received.” “My boys are ecstatic and my little girl watched on and it left her talking about her mummy with pride.” The Whale Cup is a race where there are two male and two female rowers. “When Peta agreed to row James Fitzpatrick jumped at the opportunity to sweep them, and Megan Elizabeth joined them to make up the crew.” “Peta had previously rowed in the Clubs open women’s crew last year, Craig has been a Masters rower and son Rex has just started rowing in a fast emerging talented U/19 crew, “ Peter said. “We all know what Peta has gone through the past year, so what a fantastic effort and great thing to do with the family, in not the calmest of surf conditions on the day.” The Shelton family and crew finished second in their event, now only one point off a top of the table finish.
