Marathon riders visit Tea Gardens Primary By Margie TIERNEY THE students at Tea Gardens Primary School were treated to a very special group of visitors last Friday. The cycling team from ‘Ride for Sick Kids’ stopped off to talk, bike safety, what it means to be involved in fundraising for Ronald McDonald House and what the charity does for sick children and their families. The cyclists had begun their 500 kilometre marathon ride at Grafton three days before, so were a little weary but buoyed by their journey and people they’d met along the way. “We’ve had perfect weather, even tail winds which meant we were early to everything, it’s

Marathon riders visit Tea Gardens Primary FROM Page 1 been a great week,” Ronald McDonald House CEO Ross Bingham told News Of The Area. 18 riders and support crews took part in the ride road from Grafton to Newcastle to raise

$200,000 for the charity. “All of the money will go to Ronald McDonald programs across northern New South Wales,” Ross said. “Our Newcastle and Tamworth houses, our retreat at Forster and our learning programs from the Central Coast to Mid-North Coast and our family rooms inside the hospitals at Gosford and Newcastle will all benefit. Ross Bingham has been CEO of Ronald

McDonald House for the past 20 years after starting work there as a volunteer. “I just love my work every day you can make a difference to children and families,” he said. On average 600 families take up the offer of accommodation at Ronald McDonald Houses every year. Some stay for a few days, some stay for months and keep coming back year after year. It takes $2 million

newsofthearea.com.au to fund the program annually and the children from Tea Gardens Primary were able to help out with a contribution of $500. The cyclists, also had two bikes to deliver to the lucky winners of a school raffle. One went to a member of the office staff, while an ecstatic Bailey Condon was very happy to take home the other brand spanking new bike.

TEA GARDENS PRIMARY: Visit by ‘Ride for Sick Kids’ Cyclists.

Drug Raid FROM Page 1 Senior Constable Dave Coyle said, “Police executed a search warrant upon a house in Tea Gardens where it was believed it was being used to grow cannabis hydroponically.” A search of the house located a number of cannabis plants averaging one metre in height and 25 kilograms of loose

cut cannabis, along with a small amount of amphetamines. Some loose ammunition was also discovered. The 38 year old man was arrested and charged with cultivating a prohibited plant, possession and supply of cannabis. A 27 year old man will also face Raymond Terrace local court next week after allegedly failing a roadside drug test.

The man was driving a small hatchback on Marine Drive in Tea Gardens when he was pulled over by police. He was subjected to a roadside drug test and returned a positive result to cannabis. He was taken to Tea Gardens Police Station for a secondary test which again proved positive. He’s been charged with driving with illicit drug in system. And on Wednesday

29 August, two men from San Remo and Broke were issued with infringement notices after an incident at a Tea Gardens licensed premises. Police were called after the men were refused service and asked to leave, but failed to do so, and continued to argue with the Licensee. Both men were issued with $550 fines for failing to quit.

Boost for Aged Care Services AS part of The Nationals ongoing campaign to improve aged care services in regional Australia, local aged care services are being invited to share in $40 million to improve their operations, for the benefit of local seniors,” Federal member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie announced today. Dr Gillespie said aged care providers could now apply for one-off grants of up to $500,000 to undertake infrastructure extensions. “The new Aged Care Regional, Rural and Remote Infrastructure Grants scheme is an important part of our government’s commitment to providing the best

quality aged care for our senior Australians,” Dr Gillespie said. “The projects this fund will support include improving accessibility, extensions or carrying out much-needed upgrades, and I would like to take this opportunity to urge local operators to consider applying.” Funding will be provided via an open and competitive application process. “Existing Governmentapproved residential and home care providers can apply,” Dr Gillespie said. “Approved Commonwealth Home Support Programme providers such as Meals On Wheels

may also be eligible, where there is an exceptional need.” Dr Gillespie said applications for the Aged Care Regional, Rural and Remote Infrastructure Grants will close at 2pm AEDT on 24 October 2018. “Since 2013, funding for aged care services in our electorate has increased from $90-million a year to more than $130-million a year and as I continue to liaise with aged care providers in our local area, I am encouraging them to apply for funding to ensure our region continues to share in the Federal Coalition Government’s significant investment in aged care services,” Dr Gillespie added.

NCAT looked at several issues in this Dividing Fences application, the most interesting one involved retaining walls.

In short, the applicants had served a Fencing Notice under section 11 of the Dividing Fences Act 1991 (NSW) (the Act), which was not agreed to by the neighbours. At the same time the respondents began an action in the Supreme Court of New South Wales substantially in negligence and trespass. The key issue for the Tribunal was whether the orders sought in relation to a new/replacement retaining wall fell within the definition of fencing work as defined by the Act. Generally, the definition of fencing work under the Act excludes “retaining walls”, except where they are a “…

foundation or support necessary for the support and maintenance of the fence” (paragraph (c) of the definition of “fence”). The Tribunal considered whether the primary purpose of the retaining wall was: 1) to retain soil; or, 2) as a footing/support for the dividing fence. It concluded that the Applicant must bring evidence about whether the retaining wall work falls within paragraph (c). It is not enough to just state what work is proposed. Without evidence the Tribunal could not infer the retaining wall fell within paragraph (c). The application was dismissed. The Tribunal did not expressly state what evidence would be sufficient, it is likely a suitably qualified expert would be required to show the primary purpose falls within paragraph (c).

“People come to Tea Gardens knowing they can throw a line in, if they can’t do that, they won’t come,” Michelle Carter said. There are 850,000 fishing permits issued in New South Wales every year. That does not include groups such as pensioners, disabled pensioners, veterans and those under 18 years of age, who are exempt. “The influence of Marine Parks in the Myall Lakes District is excessive and unnecessary,” Myall River Action Group’s Gordon Grainger said.

A number of petitions are being circulated around Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, ahead of the end of the Government’s public consultation period on Thursday 27 September. A public forum was also held in Forster last week. The Sydney marine park proposal, forms part of the first stage of a 10-year Marine Estate Management Strategy. While environmental groups have generally welcomed the ban, the State Government is believed to be rethinking the proposal following the voter backlash in the recent Wagga Wagga by-election rout.

Paul Harris Fellow Award

By Margie TIERNEY

LONG time local Rotarian Barbara Lyle has just received one of the Club’s most prestigious awards. At the Club’s recent meeting in Tea Gardens Barbara was awarded a ‘Paul Harris Fellow Award’. “A Paul Harris Fellow Award recognises outstanding service by a person whose life has demonstrated Rotary’s shared objective to build World understanding and peace,” President Peter Sivyer said. “It was a great surprise and I am honoured,” Barbara Lyle told News Of the Area. Barbara has spent a veritable lifetime in the service of other people. “She is well known to most of us with her unparalleled commitment to the promotion of music, and has been the Musical Director of the U3A Choir since 2007.” Barbara is a Life Member of the Eastwood Uniting Church Musical Society. Barbara has also been involved in Community Aid and School P and C Committees and is currently Chairperson of the Grahamstown Uniting Church Council. Barbara and her husband Ron of 50 years, moved to the

Myall from Sydney in 2006. “I grew up in a household where volunteering was a way of life, and although my Mother is no longer with us, my 99 year old Dad is as touched as I am for this reward for a lifetime of volunteering,” Barbara said. And just a reminder, the U3A’s 25th Anniversary celebrations kick off this weekend with a musical performance at the Hawks

Nest Community Centre on Sunday night 23 September. There’s an art and photography exhibition as well starting the following Friday night 28 September and open all weekend, along with a musical performance and World War One Commemoration at the Tea Gardens Baptist Church on Saturday evening 29 September.

Pre School visit to the Library By Margie TIERNEY

IN this digital age, it’s nice to know the book, with its pages of pictures and the printed word, can still enthral our tiny tots. The preschool children from Brighter Beginnings Day Care Centre were recently treated to an excursion to the Tea Gardens Library. “As many children had not been to the library before, it was a very exciting visit,” Centre Director Narineh Siakos said. The children travelled to the library courtesy of a special bus and were greeted by the smiling faces of the library staff and volunteers, eager to make the little ones feel right at home. Narineah said, “As the children looked around in excitement, they were welcomed to the children’s

section where they were read two stories on Elephants.” “They extended on these stories with a craft activity to make their own elephants and sat in groups at the tables using scissors to create their masterpieces.” Librarian Chris Shelly said, “I was really surprised at the children’s enthusiasm and how they embraced and enjoyed not one but many books, happily turning the pages and showing the books to their friends.” “The Librarians allowed the children to have their lunch inside and quietly look through the books,” Narineh said. “The children seemed to really enjoy this as they were able to look through various books and explore the different feel of hardcover and paperback books while finding books of interest to them.”

“As the children were on their way back to the childcare centre, plenty of giggles and conversations could be

Black Spot Nominations THE Federal Coalition Government is calling on mobile black spot nominations from local, territory and state governments, as well as Federal Members of Parliament, to identify locations for the next round of the $220 million Mobile Black Spot Program. Round 4 of the program was announced in June this year with the Coalition investing $25 million to eliminate mobile black spots in regional Australia. Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie, said this next round affirms The Nationals commitment to delivering 21st century communications in the regions and will deliver real benefits for our communities.

q Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie

“I’m delighted to see the next round of the program coming to fruition. The program is changing lives for so many local communities across our local electorate and across regional and remote communities across Australia,” Dr Gillespie said. “We’re taking a targeted approach this time around to deliver a clear economic benefit. We are calling on state, territory and local governments, as well as our parliamentary colleagues, to nominate mobile black spot areas in their region where economic as well as social benefits can be realised.” “Round 4 will also target improved mobile coverage for medical, educational and emergency services facilities, as well as along key transport routes and in towns that experience seasonal demand due to tourism.” The program has been highly successful with more than 600 of the total 867 base stations already delivered across the country under the first three rounds of the program. More than $680 million has been generated in co-investment from state and local governments, carriers, businesses and local communities. “Through the program we have encouraged much needed investment by mobile operators in regional Australia. This has brought real benefits and connectivity to thousands of households and businesses across the nation.”

Few weeks remaining for Literature Award entries

WITH just a few weeks left until entries for the Port Stephens Literature Awards close, judge Lloyd Hogg has some tips for aspiring writers. “There is no such thing as good writing – just good re writing ,” he said. “The important thing is to get your story typed up and then to work on it.” he added. “Get rid of the unnecessary adjectives and adverbs and flowery language that doesn’t need to be there,” he said. “Make sure that there is a strong story line which draws the reader in. If you haven’t captured the reader’s attention within the first page or so, the judges will not treat it kindly.” “With so many entries to wade through, they are on the lookout for stories that stand out from the run-of-the-mill,” he added. “We have an exhaustive judging process whereby as many as nine preliminary readers come up with the top 20 short stories.” “They then award their ‘readers choice’ $50 prize to the one they consider the best and then hand the shortlisted entries over to the finalists judges. These three judges then independently rate them from one to 20 and add up the points to decide the winners,” he said. “These are announced in November.”

Entries close on 12 October and all details can be found by going to the News Of The Area website or the TACE website www.tace. tilligerry.com

Thursday 13th September: As usual our $5 day for 12 ends of bowling. Format for play was 2 games of Pairs, no winners no losers just a good way to spend your morning. The social bowlers stayed after their games to watch the 2nd round of the Annis Young Competition. On Rink 2 Lynda Richards v Lynne Green. This was a hard fought battle from beginning to end. I, (Lynda) was granted a 10 point start, as I have never won a major competition. I managed to hold the lead until the 20th end when Lynne took the lead by 2 shots, 116 v 114. Gaining 9 shots on the 23rd end helped my score enormously. On the 29th end victory was mine 158 v 142. Maynie Roberts and Robyn Beaumont battled it out on

Dear Mr TH,

OPINION

Gardens Visit Dear News Of The Area,

A GROUP of twenty of us had a thoroughly enjoyable day at the magnificent Hunter Valley Gardens which were opened 15 years ago, how time gets away. After morning tea at the neighboring village and a spot of shopping we entered the gardens and had a light lunch in the cafe after which we took the train ride around the eight kilometers of pathways and saw ten differently themed

display gardens, unfortunately we were a couple of weeks too early for the roses in bloom, but it was a beautiful day and the gardens looked spectacular with the spring blossoms appearing. I am sure we were all inspired from the experience and will use some of the ideas in our own gardens, be it on a smaller scale. Pam Smith Wednesday Craft Group

I GUESS it depends on the pyjamas. Some people have quite stylish, matching pyjamas that look far classier than your common tracksuit. Others have pyjamas with holes in places where there shouldn’t be holes, so various parts of their anatomy jiggle around and sometimes escape. It is quite horrific. If the nightwear is stylish, I think it is okay to go as far as the letterbox, but only if you have looked for any traffic and done a mad dash to collect your very important mail. This should be limited to when you are expecting money or tickets or a letter from long lost Aunt Maud, not throwaway junk mail or your power bill. There may be occasions when you are running very late to drop the kids at school and you feel that it is okay to drive them in your pyjamas because you won’t be getting out of the car. Don’t be so sure of that. You can bet the one day you drive your little darlings to the school gate in your flannelette pyjamas with the top three buttons missing, will be the day you run out of fuel on your way home. Then you will suffer the glares from other parents driving past in their SUVs wearing classy suits on the way to their very important jobs, while you look like a hobo. It isn’t great if you are a canteen helper or on the P&C committee, trust me. You’ll be the talk of the schoolyard. Pyjamas in the supermarket are never okay, unless they are on the shelf and you are buying them. Wearing your bedclothes to the supermarket really indicates that you’ve given up on the last bit of self respect you had. Of course it is tempting to race in when you want a block of chocolate for your Sunday night Netflix binge, but do you really want to become a social media sensation for all the wrong reasons? It isn’t carefree, it’s just downright daggy and unacceptable. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Upcoming “Kneelers” and “Grippers” Charity Day Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 12 SEPTEMBER: Bowlers needed to pinch themselves today it was so beautiful that they might have thought that they had died and gone to heaven. Although we had a number of bowlers away, 50 players faced the starter in the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition. The organisers tried out a new format today which was designed to give all players an even chance to win some money. There still is a big incentive to win games but at least teams don’t have to win both games to be successful. The first game won the

toss and the grass greens winners on rink 10 were; Gary Wynne, David Garcia and Max Stephens, on the synthetic green rink 4 was the lucky draw with Bob Weir, Doug Naylor and John Yabsley taking out the money. When put to the vote, it appeared that a change to this format was given the thumbs up by a majority of players. The Myall Bistro voucher was won by Col Amos. 14 September Friday Open Pairs today attracted 20 players competing for the bragging rights. Bowlers enjoyed a beautiful spring day and played on the superb grass green. Winners with the highest score were; “Vaughan” and Peter Cheney.

16 September In Sunday bowls a field of 14 braved a very blustery morning with just a bit of a chill in the air. One of our staunch and avid bowlers was presented with a special card for her forthcoming birthday. Congratulations Dorothy Thompson 90 not out and still going strong! Winners for the day from a game of 3s and game of 4s were; Sue Morris, Kathy Stone and Ray Prigg. In other news; The Club will welcome a visit from the Lake Cathie bowlers this coming week. They will be staying from 19th through to 23 September and are looking for some competition and good Tea Gardens hospitality. There is a game organised next Saturday with

Next Friday the annual “Kneelers” and “Grippers” charity day will be held in support of some of our local school children needing financial assistance. This event is planned for a 10.00am start with a sausage sandwich gold coin lunch. The Palm Lake Open Mixed Pairs scheduled for 13/14 October still has vacancies for more teams. With substantial prize money at stake I would expect that the vacancies will fill up fast. The annual Oncology Day will be held on Friday 19 October. Crabs Are On LOCAL crabbing identity ‘Claws’ has been testing the waters and the word is that the mud crabs are back. “It’s been my experience that the run starts around September and ends about May,” he told News Of The Area. “For some unknown reason they go off during November but are back with a vengeance shortly after,” he added. “Anywhere near the mangrove swamps is a good place for your traps and I’ve found that they come on

better when the bigger tides are on the rise,” he said. News Of The Area asked what bait is most appropriate. “Fresh fish frames are ideal and it is wise to run the traps on a daily basis as octopuses will get in and leave you with little more than shells,” he said. “You can legally keep female crabs but I’m keen to see them multiply so I release them,” he added. It’s advised to check the laws before crab fishing as hefty fines can apply for the illegal catching of them.

Jason’s By Rachael VAUGHAN

IN October this year, Jason Elwes will make the trip to Hiroshima, Japan for a regatta, as part of the 2018 Hansa Class World and International Championships. With the assistance of 300 volunteers this unique Class will see around 200 disabled and able-bodied sailors compete against each other in open competition. Jason is appealing to local businesses and individuals to help him make his dream to compete come true, as he raises funds to enable him to compete amongst up to 60 Australian sailors that will attend with their supporters. Jason is not new to facing challenges to get where he needs to be, or to achieving things important to him. He told News Of The Area, “I had a fall in 1993 resulting

in complete paraplegia and closed brain injury, and for a number of years I found it hard to adjust and didn’t have an eye on the big picture.” “About nine years ago I was invited to check out a program called Sailability, I went along with the idea of volunteering my help and looking to challenge my mind with something new.” “Once I was shown the program, I immediately knew I was to stay involved in whatever way I could.” ‘From there, I was introduced to sailing as a sport and I have taken on the art of competitive sailing with gusto,” he said. “Recently I was chosen to become a member of the Paralympic Selection Squad, as Australia prepares for the reintroduction of sailing for the 2024 Paris games,” he added.

Sailability Local sponsorship of any size will assist in Jason’s goal to attend Hiroshima, which will provide him with additional high-level competition experience as he works towards the goal of representing his country at the next Paralympics. Jason is committed to reaching his dream, and sharing his experiences and journey with those around him, with the added hope that he may also encourage others to work hard to overcome any obstacles they may face. Jason can be contacted on 0412653467 or jaelwes@ bigpond.com.
