Council Consultations

By Daniel SAHYOUN MIDCOAST Council’s first series of community meetings came to an end last week with the final session held in Bulahdelah. There was a strong turnout from the local community with Administrator John Turner, Interim General Manager Glenn Handford and eight council representatives present. Mr Handford told the local crowd the “triple merger is a very complex situation.” “You have three different councils, three different sites and three different cultures to merge into one,” he said. “The measure of success will be how this council moves from administration back into elected representation.” Although MidCoast Council has only been operational

for six weeks, Mr Handford said they are developing a “structure that will best deliver the services that the community wants and needs.” “One of the challenges we are going to face is prioritisation, we only have a certain amount of resources and we have to figure out the best way to spend that money,” he said. The Council will receive $5 million for merger and $15 million for infrastructure projects, with $1million going to “not-for-profit groups to build more vibrant sustainable communities.” Mr Handford said the money will be spent efficiently and effectively and he intends to meet with the community regularly to explain Council spending. Commander’s visit

By Margie TIERNEY

SEVEN senior police officers led by Port Stephens Commander Chris Craner came to Tea Gardens on Tuesday night, to outline a new approach to law and order and community awareness. The two hour meeting in the Masonic Hall was well attended with locals eager to hear what police had to say and to voice their own concerns. “This is an ongoing initiative,” Commander Craner told the News Of The Area. “Every six weeks, police teams will travel to different areas in the Port

Stephens region to hold community meetings and hear first hand what’s troubling residents and what locals can do to help police,” he said. Topics which came under discussion included, drug and alcohol problems, burglary and home security. Commander Craner was very excited by a proposal put forward by the local Scouts to use their refurbished hall in Hawks Nest as a possible venue for a ‘police and youth boxing initiative’ which has proved so successful in Sydney. “This would never have happened, had we not had this

meeting,” said Commander Craner. “We are bothered, if we are NOT bothered,” said Tea Gardens Senior Constable Rob Wylie. “We want the community to talk to us, to be our eyes and ears and report incidents that are out of the ordinary to ensure that we continue to live in an area where the crime rate is relatively low.” Inspector Brian Tracey, from Port Stephens, said they will also investigate the possibility of a holding a meeting with the community to focus on the best ways to make your home safer. “Sometimes it can be as simple as locking your screen door,” he told News Of The Area.

Judge Dr Waratah Lahy, said the winning artwork was a quiet and unassuming work that demonstrates the artist’s clear engagement with the subject. “Pat has not tried to paint a straight representation, she has tried to explore and understand her subject matter,” Dr Lahy said. “It is a work that describes small discoveries and I enjoyed the journey it took me on.” Helen Sillar’s print, “A Dish of Fish” and Rosemary Lucas’s “Clementines” were selected as the runners-up. Dr Lahy commented on the balanced compositions, beautiful execution, harmony and rhythm of the works.

“I think collectively the Galleries in the Gardens artists really put together a great exhibition,” she said. “I am impressed with the range of work on show and appreciate the ways in which the theme has been interpreted with much diligence and good humour.” Now in its seventh year, the popular event was well-supported with hundreds of locals and visitors attending throughout the weekend. Representing Galleries in the Gardens (GIG), Lee Anderson said GIG is simply a small group of local “artists” who love the camaraderie of working together, being part of a group, who enjoy their art and who are inspired by the environment of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. “It was terrific to get such

An End of an Era

By Daniel SAHYOUN

IT’S almost the end of an era for Tea Gardens Laundromat as owners John and Nola Moore have made the tough decision to retire and have listed their business for sale. With a motto of “if it can be washed, we can do it,” John and Nola have passionately served the local community, businesses and holidaymakers for over 23 years. The dedicated and goodhumoured couple said they are “going to miss it like buggery.” “We’ve enjoyed every minute of it, and are going to continue to enjoy whatever time we have left,” Nola said. “We’re definitely going to miss this place, the community and the people.” The couple brought the business after John was made redundant from his job in Sydney. John said, “I was 55 years-old at the time and a bit long in the tooth.” “We’d been visiting the area for more than 20 years before we brought the business,” he said. “Nola wasn’t too sure about

a pet, a copy of the News Of The Area, a newsstand or any combination of these. Maggie was “so excited’ when News Of The Area informed her she had won a family pass to the Zoo. “I was so happy that I just felt like screaming, I have never been to Taronga Zoo before,” she said. “I love animals and can’t wait to go because it will be so much fun.” Maggie said as soon as she read about the competition in the paper, she immediately set to work on capturing her winning entry. “Mum and I tried getting a photo with my favourite dog Rio outside, but he just wouldn’t settle,” Maggie explained. “We brought Rio inside but he still wouldn’t sit long enough to read the News Of The Area with me.” Maggie said the trick was, “A lot patience and cuddles on a bean bag in front of the fire.” “I was really happy with the picture we finally got and I was

pleased with Rio as well.” Maggie has two other dogs named Ruff Ruff and Reg as well as three guinea pigs. The bubbly ten-year old said she always reads News Of The Area and particularly likes the competitions. “I entered the Reptile Park colouring competition earlier in the year, I didn’t win but I still liked entering,” she said. “I like the competitions because I can be creative and it’s a whole lot of fun.” Maggie and her family are looking forward to visiting Taronga Zoo in the coming weeks. “I can’t wait to see the African Elephants, Zebras, Echidnas and Penguins because I have only ever seen them in books before,” Maggie said. “Thank you News Of The Area for picking my entry and giving me this amazing experience.” The family passes are valued at over $130 each.

moving up here, but I knew it would be a good decision.” Since then, John and Nola have become a much-respected part of the community and have also made a significant contribution to charity by donating all their tips to many organisations. Nola and John said they have had “some fantastic staff” which has allowed them to enjoy time away on holiday. They have been fortunate to have witnessed the Tour de France and have also visited the Caribbean to watch the West Indies play. John told News of the Area, “We are very apprehensive about retiring.” “We don’t know if we’ll get along with each other, having to spend so q RETIREMENT: Nola and John Moore. much time together without work,” he jokingly said. “John and Nola will be sadly an excellent investment or family The business is currently listed missed by the community and the business for the right person,” he with Ray White Real Estate in Tea many people they have worked said. Blow over on the water ON Sunday 17 July, Police observed three vessels leave the public wharf in Tea Gardens. Each boat contained five males each who were quite noisy and were attracting the attention of pedestrians. One vessel attempted to tow a skier from underneath the Singing Bridge. Water Police from Nelson Bay assisted and attended. One of the vessels disappeared before they arrived. The skippers of the other two boats were breath tested where one returned a negative result while the other returned a reading more than 4 times the legal limit. He was arrested and conveyed to the Police Station for a breath analysis which returned a reading of 0.156. He was issued with a court notice for operate vessel with high range PCA to appear before Raymond Terrace Local Court.

7 times over

AT around 3.30pm Sunday 17 July, police received a number of phone calls in relation to a green Toyota ECHO hatchback being driven by a female who appeared to be intoxicated. It was said to Police that the vehicle was being driven very erratically. Police responded from Tea Gardens and located the vehicle stopped on the left of the northbound lanes of the Pacific Highway at the intersection of Viney Creek Road (east) Tea Gardens. At this time the 31 year old female driver from Sydney who was the sole occupant of the vehicle crawled from the driver’s seat into the front passenger seat and locked the door. After a short while the vehicle was accessed by police and the female was subjected to a roadside breath test which returned a reading excess of seven times the legal limit. She was placed under arrest and conveyed to Tea Gardens Police Station for a breath analysis which in turn returned a reading of 0.313. Amazingly she managed to drive from Sydney’s northern beaches to Tea Gardens which is approximately 219km’s. She was intending to make it to Forster which is a further 106km’s approximately. The lady was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station and detained as an intoxicated person before being released on the morning of Monday 18 July. Her licence was suspended on the spot and she was issued with a court notice for high range and will appear at Raymond Terrace Court on 1 August.

BRIGADE: Rotarian Anne Collins with enthusiastic Brigade members.

Rotary meet the Brigade By Ian MACKENZIE-SMITH

TWENTY members and family of the local Rotary Club held their last weekly meeting at the Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade’s (RFB) station. The shift in location for the meeting was part of Rotary’s Vocational program where they visit organisations and places of business. These visits provide an insight into how the hosts conduct their day-to-day activities. Ten of the RFB members

attended and gave the Rotarians a detailed run through of the intricacies in fighting and preventing fires. The visitors expressed amazement at the level of training that goes towards fighting fires in a rural situation and at the same time keeping the Community and Brigade members safe. Brigade members gave several demonstrations, including utilising the vehicle winch at a simulated accident scene and in conducting a hazard reduction burn.

Everyone then retired to the warm recreation room and enjoyed a bar-b-q dinner. Newly installed Rotary President, Brian Oakley, expressed the Club’s appreciation for the evening and presented Brigade Captain, Helmut Panhuber, with a donation of $500.00 to go towards vital equipment. The coming together of the two organisations demonstrates the level of cooperation that takes place within our volunteer Myall Coast Community.

Member Lisa Skelton said this year’s slightly lower count doesn’t indicate a declining population. “We had lower participant numbers this year resulting in less shore coverage as well as poor weather conditions reducing visibility,” she said. “We cannot expect to sight every dolphin in Port Stephens during the census period, which was completed in one hour of one day.” The census enlisted the assistance of 54 volunteers who were situated in 41 locations covering both the Hawks Nest and Tomaree sides of the bay.

Commercial boat operators and Marine Rescue were also involved and patrolled known dolphin ‘hotspots’ within the bay and offshore areas. Ms Skelton said seventeen volunteers were from the Myall Coast area and included many who have participated in the census consistently during the past 16 years. The areas covered locally included Pindimar Bay, North Arm Cove, Tea Gardens, Barnes Rocks, Jimmy’s Beach, Moira Parade and two locations along Bennetts Beach. Ms Skelton said, “Nine dolphins were sighted off Barnes

q MINISTER: Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington, Myall River Action Group member Gordon Grainger and Shadow Minister for Primary Industries Mick Veitch in Tea Gardens. By Daniel SAHYOUN MEMBERS of the Myall River Action Group (MRAG), Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Progress Association recently met with Shadow Minister for Primary Industries Mick Veitch and Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington in Tea Gardens. The group expressed their concerns relating to the continued health of the Myall River and the restrictions placed upon any action by almost a dozen different

government agencies. MRAG spokesperson Gordon Grainger said the dredging program took almost eight years to achieve and that the hurdles that were placed in the way must not be replicated in future maintenance dredging. “The purpose of the visit was firstly to discuss the restrictions and communication difficulties we have experienced over the past eight years of dealing with the myriad of Agencies who also seem to have difficulties in communication between

themselves,” Mr Grainger said. “In all we were dealing with 11 Government entities and proved to be a nightmare for the Great Lakes Council who were the managers of the project, there was far too much bureaucracy.” Mr Grainger said the group also discussed with Ms Washington the possible benefits they foresee in having State owned dredging facilities. “This meeting provided us the opportunity to express our thoughts at a senior political level and hope that it will lead to some sanity.”

period, dolphin sightings have ranged from 12 in 2011 to 194 in 2014. The voluntary census is the longest running community

dolphin count in Australia and directly supports dolphin conservation and studies conducted by research institutes.

Bottle nose population presently stable

THE 16th Port Stephens Annual Community Dolphin Census has confirmed the resident Bottle Nose Dolphin population is stable. A total of 86 dolphin sightings were recorded during a one hour observation period last month. Past studies conducted by Macquarie University estimate the Port Stephens dolphin population is approximately 90 individuals with up to 200 dolphins visiting from other areas around the coast. Ms Skelton told News Of The Area, “Dolphin movements within the Port are influenced by tidal patterns, time of day and weather events. “This year’s census was run during the same time frame as last year’s on a run out tide,” she said. “The majority of sightings observed dolphins tracking east, likely to be following the tide.” During the 16 year census

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowls By The JAFFA 13 JULY: Lawn Bowls is a game that is played all year-round under just about any climatic conditions. The Wednesday Nominated Triples today was typical winter bowls. The trend from the previous Wednesday was repeated today with strong southerly winds creating problems for the 44 players brave enough to chance their arms. The wind was a major player as evidenced by the relatively low scores. There was a countback to determine second place with the Fours team of Ken McKeown, Daryl Martin, Barry Drayton and Kerry O’Brien edging out Ray Prigg, Greg Smith and Noel Jackson. Both sides scored +15. The winners on a modest score of +29 were; Brian McPhee, Ron Rowe and Doug Naylor. 15 July: Club history was made today with the first ever Friday Open Jackpot Pairs being

played. It was very well supported with 28 players competing on a beautiful winter afternoon. The lowest winning margin was chosen to determine the winners. Alan Greenhalgh and Bill Baillie had a good win on +8 but it

just was not low enough. The winners on +4 were; Kerry O’Brien and Bev Rhodes. Congratulations! Bev Rhodes definitely won the “Player of the Match” award. She was on fire! With the Jackpot now at $420.00 for next week let’s hope

we can fill two greens. Names must be in and players present by 12.00 noon for play to commence at 12.30pm.

MYALL Coast Mudcrabs met the Old Bar Clams at Myall Park, Hawks Nest in Round 12 of the Lower Mid North Coast Competition last Saturday in front of a small, but enthusiastic, local crowd defeating the Clams 64-0. Playing in drizzling conditions, the Muddies were “undermanned” but were greatly assisted by the return of Chris Sando from Astronaut School who once again contributed strongly and made great inroads into the Clams defence. During the first half, the Muddies were inspirational with the forwards leading the way whilst the backs ran riot over a less than mobile opposition. In the forwards, James Farmer was again outstanding both in attack and defence with strong insightful charges from the ruck ably supported by Dan “Beast” Dorante. Jackson Page, enjoying his new position as breakaway continues to excel and was

rewarded with a try and successfully kicked his own conversion while Harry Weir shone with support in both attack and defence. Fast running, James Bowden also boosted the win with two tries. Backs, Pat Laver and landscaper Nathan Colver were outstanding as they continually made solid ground while out wide, Sonny Marks showed too much pace for the opposition and was rewarded with two long distance tries. Special mention should go to “youngin” Trent Page who has improved dramatically throughout the season with his line kicking and catching under pressure from the full-back position and with pace to burn, he scored his first try. We are now down to the business side of the competition with a match next Saturday against the undefeated leaders, Forster Dolphins, with the following week’s clash against the Gloucester Cockies which needs to be a “must win” game which would elevate the Muddies into the forth spot and a semi-final berth.
