THE 23 March New South Wales State Election has been heating up for the electorate of Port Stephens over the past couple of weeks. Multiple visits by the Premier, Ms Gladys Berejiklian and also by the Labor leader Mr Michael Daley has shown that the electorate is an important strategic seat in the upcoming election. Recent accusations of fake Facebook profiles has made this one of the more interesting political contests of our
times. It was reported throughout the media that Facebook investigated a complaint from Kate Washington, current sitting member for Port Stephens, who alleged fake accounts were being used to manipulate the electoral process. It was reported that the Liberal Party lodged a counter-complaint

against Ms Washington with the Electoral Commission for allegedly misusing the electoral roll to research the identity of the fake Facebook profiles. Six candidates have all put their hats into the ring for the job of representing our region in the NSW parliament. The two leaders of the pack are sitting Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington and Liberal Candidate Jaimie Abbott. Liberal Candidate Jaimie Abbott started campaigning in August and the hot topics including the immediate review of the Marine Park form part of her offering to voters. The Liberals are also behind

a new TAFE Campus for Nelson Bay which Jaimie Abbott said, “The new TAFE is rather exciting, the last campus built was in Bega; and it offers 43 courses, the proposed venue will have a variety of online and practical classrooms.” We have seen more promises than ever, air conditioning in schools and a new school at Medowie from the Labor campaign, and more teaching staff from both sides. The Liberals are also promising building repairs in schools clearing school maintenance backlogs throughout NSW by mid next year. Health in Port Stephens has also been a hot topic the Liberals have promised $780 Million to upgrade John Hunter Hospital

highlights a host of welcomed improvements for southern local Government area. From Nabiac down to Hawks Nest, and out to Stroud Road, an intensive program of works over the past 6 months has seen local communities enjoying smoother, safer roads. Projects that include major rehabilitation works, through to sealing of gravel roads, are all part of MidCoast Council’s focus on improving the region’s transport network. Recently completed works in Guya Street, Winda Woppa involved reconstructing and widening a 100m section, providing safer access for locals to popular Jimmys Beach. In Stroud Road, a 315m section of Reidsdale Road was rehabilitated late last year by widening and resurfacing the road pavement, improving roadside drainage, and in Tea Gardens, rehabilitation of a 380m section of Boondelbah Road has recently been completed. Significant improvements to Coomba Road in Coomba Park have been undertaken, with two projects that will collectively rehabilitate a stretch of almost 1km. Most recently the section between Warramutty Street North and Coolangatta Street is being widened by 1.5 metres, while drainage improvements include the replacement of several culverts. Finishing touches will be applied in the coming weeks. “This year we’ve been able to invest more into our ‘Maintenance’ and ‘Renewals’ programs than ever before, and it’s great to see local communities from all corners of the region enjoying the benefits”, said Rhett Pattison, MidCoast Council’s Manager, Projects and Engineering. Also down south, almost 700m of gravel

Labor are promising a $15.2 Million dollar upgrade of Tomaree Hospital expanding services to deliver dialysis, rehabilitation and increase palliative care beds and put more nurses on the front line. Kate Washington said, “I believe in schools and hospitals before stadiums; this is more than a slogan for me it’s a core belief.” Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “Only the Liberals will build the Fingal Bay Link Rd, Nelson Bay TAFE and review the Marine Park.”

Independent Bill Doran has stated that he doesn’t promise anything, but has pledged to donate 30% of his after tax salary to the Port Stephens community. The Greens statement is more cautionary, it warns the community that they must continue to fight to keep public land in public hands, fight off overdevelopment and work towards a solution for the PFAS issue facing Williamtown surrounds. It is now in the hands of the voters, if the promises are all delivered on Port Stephens will see great things from the next government. News Of The Area hope that the community have enough info on policies and promises from our candidates to best make an informed decision this Saturday.

It is common for family members who provide financial support for each other not to put those arrangements in writing. It is also common for lawyers to see those family members after the event when relationships have soured and for lawyers to find themselves saying to clients “if only you had put it in writing”. There is no doubt that a written document is the best protection. However, a Judge in a recent case (Nadilo v Souris [2019] NSWSC 108) was prepared to believe family members when they said they had made a financial contribution to the
purchase of their parent’s home on the promise that they would be repaid either on the sale of the home or when their parents “passed on” (ie not a gift or a loan). After both parents had died it was discovered that the surviving parent had left all her estate to a daughter who had not made any financial contributions. Judge Leeming was prepared to believe that promises were made and determined that the family members should be treated as having an interest in the home on “resulting trust” in accordance with the contributions they had made.

Gillespie on Power By Margie TIERNEY
AS we head towards a Federal Election, the Nationals have a number of battles being waged within their own party. The question of who will lead the party going into the Election is still a matter of conjecture, with former Nationals’ leader Barnaby Joyce stirring the pot again last week, by declaring he was still the elected Deputy Prime Minister of the Country. With a number of the Nationals’ Queensland and
New South Wales seats very much in doubt, tensions within the Party and with their Coalition partners the Liberals, have also ramped up, over the Government funding of coal fired power stations. The Nationals’ Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie, has made no secret of the fact that he believes that coal remains the country’s major source of power for the foreseeable future. Dr Gillespie dropped into Tea Gardens last week for an informal meeting and lunch
at the Hotel with members of several local community groups. The rising cost of power dominated the discussions. “We have worked to get retail electricity prices down,” Dr Gillespie told News Of The Area. “The big three dropped their prices by 10 to 15 percent on January 1, there’s another lot of retail pricing changes coming in July.” “We are trying to get sensible growth in energy supply that is cheaper and affordable.” While Dr Gillespie comfortably won the seat of
Lyne back in 2013, there are at least three Queensland and two New South Wales seats on a knife edge for the Nationals. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has all but ruled out a subsidised coal-fired power station, and believes the Nationals’ leadership will not change, a sentiment echoed by the Party’s leader Michael McCormack. “Barnaby Joyce was the elected Deputy Prime Minister and then he resigned last February,” Mr McCormack said. He added, “I’m now the Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Nationals.”

One big fact in timber harvesting is this one little number. Fact: Only 0.2% of NSW native forests are harvested annually. NSW has one of the most highly regulated and sustainable forest industries in the world, working with government and industry bodies and the latest research to maintain and protect our forests. Interestingly, timber in NSW is sourced from regrowth forest — areas that have already been harvested and regenerated a number of times over.
We’re dedicated to sustainable forest management and to bringing the benefits of timber into our lives as part of a long-term sustainable future for our forests and our environment. If you’re as passionate about the future of NSW forests, visit timberfacts.com.au to learn more.

0.2% - that’s the little number we’re talking about. That’s the total amount of NSW native forests harvested annually. And for every single tree harvested we grow another. This means that this 0.2% is automatically regrown every time. For centuries, native forests in NSW have been of fundamental benefit to the environment and the community. They contain valuable habitat for threatened plants, animals and ecological communities, and a sustainable timber supply. Part of this sustainability is restricting the amount of timber harvested to such a small portion.

Election Apology
I Bill Doran, the Independent candidate for the seat of Port Stephens, would like to APOLOGISE to the greater Port Stephens community for following my rivals down the Nelson Bay spending “Rabbit hole”. Port Stephens is more than Nelson Bay and funding of programs should reflect this. This is why I pledge to lobby for comparative spending between Nelson Bay and the rest of the electorate. This will ensure growth and deliver those long needed improvements across the whole of our great electorate. Authorised by Bill Doran, Independent candidate for the seat of Port Stephens. 11 Lloyd George Grove, Tanilba Bay, NSW 2319
