Duty Calls at Christmas By Daniel SAHYOUN

WHILE relaxing and enjoying time with family on Christmas Day, spare a thought for many people in the region who will be working as usual. Rostered on duty for the big day, local paramedic Rod Parr said he has worked many Christmases throughout his career. “We’re a 24/7, 365 day a year service, emergencies simply don’t take a break,” he said. “People don’t choose the days that they get sick or injured so we need to be available.” Mr Parr told News Of The Area he was looking forward to enjoying time

q Karuah Police Constable Trent Moffat and Tea Gardens Senior Constables David Coyle and Rob Wylie wish the Myall Coast community a very Merry Christmas. By Senior Constable David COYLE THE Port Stephens Local Area Command, of which we are all a part of, has experienced a horrendous year for serious and fatal motor vehicle accidents. Many of which I have unfortunately had the need to attend. Contacting and informing family

members that their loved ones won’t be home tonight is a terribly hard thing to do and they do not get easier with practice. The above stories are true stories and only a small snippet of what has occurred recently in our local area. All involved motor vehicles, some involved terribly drunk drivers, some included drivers

that were not even licensed to be on the road. ALL included the roads that you all use daily. In this very special time of the year, I appeal to all of you to please take care and enjoy a very special and Merry Christmas and welcome a new 2017 in style. This is my eighth Christmas at Tea Gardens

Police Station and Rob’s first. It is also Trent’s second at Karuah. Weather permitting we are expecting it to be a busy time as the area fills with holiday makers. We are all very honoured to work at Tea Gardens and Karuah and we sincerely wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas.

Annual Art and Craft Exhibition is ready to go

Myall Coast News Of The Area are again proud to be sponsoring and supporting this great local annual event. For three days the Centre will be abuzz with visitors coming and going admiring three rooms of displays and items for sale. Members worked for months before hand preparing for this massive event. There were “A” Teams,

“Money” Teams, “Promotional” Teams, “Flower Ladies”, and general helpers all of whom helped create a wonderful setting for all to enjoy. Room 1 will have a colourful display of paintings, prints, and photography, Room 2 will be filled with soft crafts of all description and jewellery and Room 3 will feature braided rugs and Mosaics along with the always popular wood work. Members volunteer their time to watch over the displays and sell the items. Every year this Exhibition

with his family and catching up with friends a few days after Christmas. “We won’t have a traditional Christmas as such, we’ll just have a belated one,” he said. “It’s definitely not the first time I’ve worked on Christmas Day and over the years my family have got used to it, they are very understanding and supportive.”

Mr Parr said working the 12-hour long shifts over the festive season is determined by the roster. “You don’t decide, you just follow the roster and work when you have to,” he said. “But unlike Christmas, I’ll actually have New Year’s off this year.” On behalf of his colleagues, Mr Parr said the ambulance service hopes everyone has a safe and Merry Christmas and takes care on the roads.

Christmas for separated families: Making it easier for the kids

if required avoid contact over the Christmas period and seek the assistance of family and friends. However watching their parents co-operate so that they spend time with both sides of their family could be the best Christmas gift you can give your child. • Ensuring that the children have the opportunity to see or communicate with both their parents and members of their extended families on Christmas Day – technology now provides us with a number of different ways to connect with family, including telephone, email, Skype and social networking. Where distance, for example, prevents children spending time with both parents on Christmas Day consider a video Skype session or FaceTime, so the children can wish their parents Merry Christmas face to face. • If there are blended or step-families make sure that all the children feel welcome and included – consider that children do not think like adults, and sometime need extra care to ensure that they feel included and welcome in the celebrations. So think ahead and take steps to ensure that despite the family dynamics your child, grandchild or family member can enjoy Christmas like every child should.

feeling in the community to this ongoing and ever growing controversial issue. The meeting was addressed by Gerard Tuckerman, Manager of Natural Resources for MidCoast Council. In a nutshell, it comes down to funding or the lack of it when it comes to Council’s plans for future dredging. There’ll be no more dredging of the Corrie Channel for at least six years. The Eastern Channel, known as the ‘shortcut’ will be looked at again in seven years. ‘’We will do it (the Eastern Channel) in about seven years’ time because we will need the sand for the stockpile,” Mr. Tuckerman told News Of The Area. As for the ‘Gut’, MidCoast Council says it’s the responsibility of Roads and Maritime Services and Crown Lands to maintain moorings. Council was also asked about the viability of buying its own dredge. “The equation doesn’t add up,” Mr Tuckerman said. “We looked at it about four or five years ago when a dredge came up for sale up at Port Macquarie.” “We did the sums, looked at

cost sharing arrangements with oyster farmers in Wallace Lake, and we couldn’t make it stack up.” Mr Tuckerman went on to say, “The private sector has the expertise to maintain a dredge, and you wouldn’t get one design of dredge to do the job.” When the Eastern Channel is able to be used by ferries on the trip between Tea Gardens and Port Stephens it takes 20 minutes off the journey each way. Gordon Grainger from the Myall River Action Group said, “The Community needs to band together and use one voice to lobby the State Government for funding.” It was hoped Dr Peter Scanes from the NSW Department of Office Environment and Heritage would address the gathering, but he left before it was over. Dr Scanes, who lead an independent team of scientists contracted by MidCoast Council to assess the health of the waterways, has been quoted in a MidCoast Council report as saying, “Our scientists found that sites in the upper reaches of the Karuah, Myall, Coolongolook, Wang Wauk, Wallingat and Wallamba Rivers were typically in excellent health.”

Council Gets its Christmas Groove On MIDCOAST Council employees are a musically talented bunch and they will be providing some Christmas cheer to their customers once again with Carols in the Office on Friday 23 December at 9am. A tradition since 2004, the Forster office foyer fills to capacity as Council's customers and staff gather to provide a spectacular performance. From the early days, when bemused customers would

arrive through the sliding doors and be welcomed with a healthy dose of Christmas cheer, to recent years when the event has become very popular, the event marks a happy close to the year for our community. The whole community is invited to attend to share some good old fashioned Christmas Spirit. It is an opportunity to be together at this very important time of the year and reflect on the year past.

q CHRISTMAS LUNCH: Organiser Sue Douglas.

q John Cavanagh, Bruno Puglisi, Marty Tooze and Steve Embry get their Christmas groove on. “At this special time of year, it is wonderful to be able to come together and share the Christmas spirit,” Administrator John Turner

said. “This is an opportunity for Council staff to thank local people for everything they do to build community

on the MidCoast.” If you feel like it, dress up festively.

By Margie TIERNEY

“We couldn’t do it without the volunteers,” said Sue. “Local businesses and people donate food and help out in so many ways.” “We start collecting and receiving donations months before Christmas.” Sue’s spare bedroom is full to overflowing with donations, from baskets for to be filled with Christmas goodies, to all the necessities to make the lunch a festive occasion. Sue and Joe and their jolly band of volunteers set up the Masonic Hall on Christmas Eve

so all is in readiness for the big day. More importantly it provides a generous loving place to go for those whose friends and family may no longer be here, or be close by. “It’s really a lunch for the more senior citizens who find themselves at a loss at Christmas.” The cost for the lunch is just $10 a head and you need to be quick, bookings end December 23. You can contact Sue Douglas on 0430 363 046.

No need to be Home Alone JUST a reminder if you’re facing a Christmas alone, there’s no need to be lonely. Tea Gardens residents Sue and Joe Douglas, aided by some dedicated volunteers, are once again putting on their traditional Christmas Day lunch at the Masonic Hall in Myall Street. Don’t Booze and Cruise

By Daniel SAHYOUN

Church Celebration By Rachel REITSMA

IT’S the season to be jolly and local police are asking all community members and visitors to the area to behave responsibly during the holiday period. Whether celebrating at a Christmas party or enjoying a few drinks with mates, police say no alcohol is the only safe limit when driving. “Remember to eat food while consuming alcohol and know your limits, never drink and drive and always have alternative transport or a designated driver,” they say. “Only time will eliminate the alcohol from your body, you still may not be able to drive first thing in the morning.” Roadside breath testing can happen anywhere at anytime and your chances of being pulled over are much higher during the holiday season. Even Santa won’t escape a random test, so don’t put your own safety or others at risk by boozing and cruising. The festive season and celebrating go hand-in-hand and police encourage you to enjoy yourself, but ask that you be mindful of your neighbours if hosting a party at home. “Keep them informed of your intentions and plans,” they advise. “Loud music should really be turned off by midnight on weekends and by 10pm on weekdays.”

It is also recommended that you take guests inside late at night and close the windows to minimise noise. Although Christmas is always a great time to catch up with family members you only see once a year, our local boys in blue say some people

TWO people have been charged with multiple offences following a domestic assault at a caravan park in Karuah. Police were called to the park following reports of a physical dispute between a male and female on 9 December. Police state both had Apprehended Violence Orders and bail conditions against each other and the male had previously been disqualified from driving until 2027. Both were placed under arrest

and taken to Karuah Police Station. The male was charged with three breaches of his AVO, three breaches of current bail conditions, driving whilst disqualified, assault and affray. The female was charged with breach of her AVO and current bail conditions, affray, possessing a prohibited drug and being in possession of goods suspected of being stolen. The pair were refused bail and are due to appear in Maitland Court on 22 December.

q ANYWHERE, ANYTIME: Karuah Police Constable Trent Moffat gives Santa a roadside breath test.

will soon realise why this is the case. “Sadly, fights do occur and, in fact, especially at Christmas,” they state. “If it is possible to be tolerant or walk away from an argument you are not only being the mature person but could be avoiding a ruined Christmas

gathering.” Whatever your plans for the festive season, local police encourage everyone to enjoy themselves responsibly for a safe and happy Christmas and great end to 2016.

P Plate drink driver A 17-YEAR-OLD male will appear before Raymond Terrace Local Court in relation to a high range drink driving offence. Police were called to Hawks Nest Surf Club carpark after the man fell from the driver's seat of his vehicle at about 6.50am on 26 November. Suspecting the driver was intoxicated, witnesses detained him

until police arrived at the scene. Following a breath test, the driver was placed under arrest and taken to Tea Gardens Police Station. A reading of 0.157 was returned from a breath analysis. The man held a provisional driver's licence restricting him to zero alcohol. His licence was suspended on the spot and a court appearance notice was issued. The man was driving a Queensland registered vehicle.

CHRISTMAS is celebrated all over the world in church buildings, in outdoor settings and on Christmas Eve with lights and incense. The churches of Bulahdelah, Tea Gardens and Karuah will celebrate the birth of Jesus at a number of venues and times. Bulahdelah St. John’s Anglican will hold a Christmas Eve Service at 8:30 pm and have also included a bring and share supper invite. Rev. Denis Kirkaldy, who is from Wyong, will be leading the services and is in the parish for the Christmas weekend. Maureen Guthrie, a Bulahdelah Anglican Church member, said, “We warmly welcome Rev. Denis Kirkaldy to lead our Christmas Service and also conduct services in Tea Gardens as our guest preacher at this time.” Tea Gardens St. Andrew’s Anglican will hold Holy Communion Services at 6:00pm on Christmas Eve and 8:00am on Christmas Day. There will also be a 6:00am Holy Communion Service at Hawks Nest beach and it has been requested that attendees bring their own chair. The Catholic Church in Bulahdelah will hold their Christmas Mass at 7:00pm on 24 December. St. Brigid’s once again has its wooden nativity scene set up out the front of the church to brighten up the town and display the birth of Christ. Tea Gardens Catholic Church will hold a Christmas Mass at 5:15pm on Christmas Eve and at 8:30am on Christmas Day. Karuah Catholic Church will have a Christmas Mass at 7:00pm on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day the Uniting Church of Bulahdelah will hold a Christmas service at 9:30am. The Uniting Church has had a billboard that displays brief statements from scripture or about Jesus throughout the year. Nigel Weekes said, “We, as a church, were keen to have a Christmas message that pointed to Jesus but was also relevant to today’s society.”

In Doubt? Throw it out By Daniel SAHYOUN BARBECUES with friends and family feasts with tables laden with turkey and seafood are some of the popular holiday season traditions. But with home fridges overloaded with festive goodies combined with the ritual summer heat, Myall Coast Hospitality students say storing and serving food safely is particularly important at this time of year. By following a few simple food safety rules, student Tia King-Stow said Christmas Celebrations will be memorable for the right reasons. “Keep the temperature of the refrigerator between 1-4°C, use a fridge thermometer to check and don’t overfill it so the cold air can circulate effectively,” she said. “As the weather gets hotter and temperatures increase, so will the activity of food poisoning bacteria.” Tia said to ensure

Emily said she was “very excited” when she realised she had achieved in the highest performance band for Hospitality. “I didn’t expect that I would get a Band 6, but I’m very happy with it,” she said.

“I definitely had a second look to make sure it was real and I checked it over and over again.” Emily was also extremely pleased with her results in her other subjects which included Biology, English and Mathematics. The Bulahdelah Central School student said consistent revision was the key to her success. “I did every single past paper that there was, I even did some practice papers from Victoria,” she said. “I also did a lot of revision and writing notes in different ways to try and remember them.” Emily also received her ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) last week

Her advice to future students is to stay calm and remain focussed. “The HSC isn’t the be all and end all, there’s always plenty of other options if you don’t do as well as you hope to,” she said. “Don’t stress and always pick subjects that you like because you are more likely to be focused on those particular ones.” Students will receive their HSC Certificates in the mail from 20 January 2017.

Op Shop Gives Back By Rachel REITSMA

THE Bulahdelah Op Shop has risen from humble beginnings and is now giving back to the community. The Op Shop is run by the Anglican Church volunteers and has been operational for nearly 30 years. It opened in 1988 to provide a service and address needs in the community and also to raise money for church maintenance. Robyn Guthrie and Trish Gregory were instrumental in the setting up of the Op Shop. Over that time, many donations of clothes, bric-abrac and furniture items have been given by community members for locals and tourists to purchase. Maureen Stamp is the current Coordinator and

spends Mondays and Fridays primarily sorting through the donations and organising the Op Shop, alongside five other volunteers. Due to the large supply of donated items and the popular bric-a-brac and books being sold, the Op Shop is now able to give back to the community and has started giving money to community groups and families in need. In November, the Op Shop gave $500 to the Bulahdelah Preschool to help them purchase barriers for their swing set. When there are families in need, food and petrol vouchers have been provided. They have also donated free clothes and CDs and DVDs to the Nursing Home to assist the residents with their activities. The Bulahdelah Op Shop will be providing more money to community groups in the future. Liz Ison, Liaison Officer for the Op Shop to the Anglican Parish, spoke with Myall Coast News Of The Area and expressed her thanks to the community for their support. “We have so many positive comments from travellers who drop past and come back again and again as well as a great local group of customers.” “We want to thank the community for their contributions and we are grateful for their support,” she said.

All I Want For Christmas

Kim Kirkpatrick: Tea Gardens This Christmas will be the first in a long time that my husband will be off work. He is always rostered on to work over the Christmas break, so this year my family and I are lucky to be able to have him home.

Mindy Sullivan: Bulahdelah For Christmas I want a watch and some choc chip cookies. I’ve put cookies on every list that I have written to Santa. I like them because they have chocolate in them.

Injunction Extended THERE was a small victory last week for groups protesting the development known as Fame Cove, situated between Bundabah and Pindimar. The Land and Environment Court has extended an injunction concerning land owned by LDF Enterprise Pty Ltd until 24 March 2017. MidCoast Council's

Director of Environment and Planning Lisa Schiff said, “We are taking steps to ensure areas of immediate concern are addressed and that the site is appropriately managed into the future.” Serious environmental damage to the iconic Fame Cove/North Arm Cove waterfront site prompted MidCoast Council to slap a stop work and clean-up

order on the land owned by road construction and ecoresort developer, multimillionaire Dong Fang Lee. Mr Lee’s company bought the vast waterfront site in 2006 for $8.8 million, with plans to build a golf course, convention centre and eco-resort at a cost of $200 million dollars. However the current DA is for a private three thousand square metre

Dear Jasminda

I’m thinking of changing hairdressers, but the lady who currently does my hair has kids at the same child care centre and we bump into each other regularly. How do I explain it to her? WT, Tea Gardens Okay, WT, let’s just think this through a bit more carefully. People from major cities can get away with changing their hairdresser as frequently as they change their car. You know, they start with a Toyota because they want to do that charming ‘Oh What a Feeling’ jump in the air with little Mimi and Sebastian, Jules the au pair, and Shih Tzu Teddy. Then along comes ‘Das Auto’ and, well, what woman wouldn’t swoon from the accent, not to mention the emissioncheating diesel fumes. I digress, WT, as I do when I get a question that raises the hairs on my fashionable new lotus flower undercut. Let me give it to you

as straight as a vodka shot from the Tea Gardens Hotel Motel on Trivia Night. You don’t live in the metropolis, my poor misguided angel. Changing hairdressers in a small coastal community is social suicide. It’s the regional equivalent to clubbing a baby seal. Did she remove your entire eyebrow during the complimentary brow wax? Did she give you a blue rinse instead of caramel highlights? Those things mean nothing, nothing, WT. Hair grows back. Reputations don’t. Remember what you shared about Jimmy the mechanic when she lulled you into a false sense of security during the Argan oil treatment? What about the ‘between you and me’ whispers relating to Maria at number 93 as she GHDed you to perfection? Those acrylic talons aren’t just for massaging your temples you know. Hell hath no fury like a hairdresser scorned. You’ve been warned.

Kim Kent: Bulahdelah For Christmas, all I want is world peace. We live with too much conflict and the world just isn’t safe anymore. Christmas celebrations will be simple this year, it will just be at home with the family.

Khloe Middleton: Nerong I’m getting my Scooby Dog a little name tag for Christmas. For me, I’m happy to get whatever I get. When we wake up on Christmas morning we go look in our stockings while mum and dad are still asleep. When everyone’s awake, we open our presents.

q $ 500 presented to Neil Renfrew for 1st Hawks Nest Scout Group by Mary Cooper and Lynda Curran.

Thursday, 22 December, 2016

Dane Pope: Hawks Nest I usually get money for Christmas, but there’s nothing I really want at the moment so I’ll just put it in the bank. I’d like to save enough to buy a 1964 Aston Martin, but I don’t think that’s ever going to happen.

Sue Malone: Bulahdelah This year, I’m going to be spending it with family overlooking the Myall Lakes at my sister’s place. We’re all looking forward to just unwinding after a busy year.

Fletcher Barclay: Karuah and Caleb Grimshaw: Girvan All I want is for everyone to have a happy Christmas. (Fletcher) I’d like my Ps but sadly that can’t happen till next year. (Caleb)

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

Shane Nunan: Swan Bay I simply want peace and harmony. Not in a world conflict sense, but more about Christmas. We’re bombarded with being told to buy this, buy that, do this, do that. At the end of the day it’s a Christian festival that has no relevance to non-Christians at all. Unless you have small children, it doesn’t have any relevance and I think it is just a pain. It is just a commercial mass-hysteria when it should be more of a time to catch up with friends and family. I think the original meaning has just been taken over by commercial interests.

Sharon Goldthorpe: Bulahdelah For Christmas, I’ll be heading interstate and spending it with family in South Australia. There, I will be travelling around with my sister and cycling throughout so I’m hoping there’s a bike under the tree.

Smooth Ride for Campers BOMBAH Point is a popular camping area on Myall Lake with locals and visitors alike, and MidCoast Council has just completed a 1.5km extension of the sealed part of Bombah Point Road in time for the summer holidays. “The Road is heavily used in the summer, with large numbers of caravanners travelling to the camping ground,” said Council's Manager of Operations (South) Jamie Condie. Council has sealed a 1.5km section of the Road linking to an existing 1km stretch of sealed surface. Due to the existing section's condition, Council also rehabilitated its surface. In addition to this project, a segment of road has been resealed on Bombah Point Road closer to Bulahdelah. The resealing was

undertaken in late November. “The favourable weather conditions have allowed this project to progress quickly and is a credit to all Council staff involved,” Council's Manager Operations Jamie Condie said. “We thank local residents and motorists for their patience whilst this important work was undertaken.” This project was completed under Council's Rural Road Construction Program which includes funding through the Federal Government's Roads to Recovery Scheme. Further work on Bombah Point Road to bitumen seal the remaining gravel sections is planned to be undertaken in coming years through the Rural Road Construction Program.

Men’s Shed Boost for Tea Gardens FEDERAL Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie has announced Federal funding towards a local project at the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Men’s Shed. Dr Gillespie announced $1622 to the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Men’s Shed towards the costs associated with tools, equipment, community projects and training. The grant is part of

$400,000 in national funding provided to more than 100 Men’s Sheds across Australia. “Men’s Sheds provide a place where men are able to work on meaningful projects at their own place in their own time and gather together in a safe, friendly and inclusive environment,” Dr Gillespie said. “They reduce social isolation, strengthen communities and contribute

to improvements in the health of individual men, particularly the mental health of retired and older men.” Under the National Shed Development Programme, all Men’s Sheds in Australia can apply for up to $8,000 in funding, with priority given to sheds in rural and remote areas and in areas of disadvantage. The Australian Men’s

Shed Association (AMSA) manages the National Shed Development Program. AMSA will open the next round of funding for Men’s Sheds shortly. Details can be found at www.mensshed. org/home/.aspx Any enquires on the application process for the programme can be directed to AMSA via email at amsa@ mensshed.net or phone 1300 550 009.

Massive 3 times over limit q B ombah Point Road is a scenic drive into the Myall Lakes National Park and is gradually being sealed by Council.

POLICE have suspended a Karuah man's licence following a high range drink driving offence. The 37-year-old male, who was more than three times over the legal limit, was on his way to pick up his children from school at the time. Police stopped the driver on Tarean

Rd in Karuah on 13 December for a breath test which revealed the man was well above the legal limit. He was placed under arrest and taken to Karuah Police Station for a breath analysis where he returned a reading of 0.162. His licence was suspended on the

spot and he was issued with a court notice to appear before Raymond Terrace Local court for high range drink driving. Police report the children's mother was a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle at the time of the offence.

Clocking in at Christmas HOLIDAY fun and relaxation are top of the agenda for the thousands of tourists who flock to Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens at this time of year. But go behind the holiday curtain and there are the workers in essential services that keep on toiling 24/7. Rhonda Pitt is the Facility Manager for Peter Sinclair Gardens Aged Care. She’s been a registered nurse for 43 years and the word “retirement” doesn’t enter into her vocabulary. “I tried to get into quilting” she said laughingly. Rhonda, has worked all over New South Wales and trained in renal nursing, midwifery and completed a Masters degree. In her spare time, she raised two children, was a Scout leader and became a member of Rotary 14 years ago. “I joined the Breakfast Club in Orange, it started at

7am in the morning and was pretty cold in winter,” Rhonda said. From Orange, Rhonda and her family moved to Broken Hill where she broke through the Rotary glass ceiling. ‘’I was the first lady member of Rotary in Broken Hill.” Rhonda recently rejoined Rotary in Hawks Nest and was inducted last week. “They do a lot with the schools with the breakfast club, they do the RYDA driver awareness program for young people in Bulahdelah and raise money for numerous not-for-profit charities. One of Rotary’s biggest fundraisers is their annual book sale at the Hawks Nest Community Centre. More than six thousand books, CDs, DVDs tapes and LPs will be on sale over three days from Friday 6 January through to Sunday 8 January.

Members have been sorting through in excess of 6,000 books and are promising a great selection of hardback and paperback editions. There will be many categories on offer including publications on Sport, Gardening, Arts & Craft, Cooking, Health and many more. The collection of children’s books is always comprehensive and very popular with the young q

readers. A substantial collection of CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes and old 33⅓ & 78 records will be on show for collectors and as an added bonus, a number of collectors’ editions of Capt. W E Johns “Biggles” books will be on sale. The sale will be conducted over three days on Friday 6, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 January at the usual venue, the Community Hall in Booner Street, Hawks Nest. After much discussion, the Club

has decided that due to the extent of the work involved in preparing and running the popular book sale, the usual Easter Book Sale will not be held in 2017. In January, however, Club members will again be ably assisted by the members of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Surf Lifesaving Club with the heavy work of moving the cartons of books from storage to the hall. All proceeds from the sale will be distributed back into the community to organisations such as the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Surf Lifesaving Club.

The early birds get the bargains at an earlier January Sale.

By: Margie TIERNEY THE Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has a new President. Jessica Harris has been elected to the role taking over from outgoing President Mark McCormack. Jessica and husband Darren moved to Hawks Nest from Sydney four years ago for the lifestyle and a dramatic career change. “I was a scientist working in cancer research for a long time and Darren was in IT,” Jessica told News Of The Area. “We both had very desk-bound jobs but all our spare time was spent outdoors,” Jessica said. The couple bought Lazy Paddles and now cater to individuals who might want to hire a kayak or groups who prefer to experience the delights of the Myall River with a guided tour. “It’s awesome, we really enjoy it, both in terms of the lifestyle and sharing our love of the outdoors with our customers, many of whom haven’t paddled before,” Jessica said. “We’ve always been members of the Chamber of Commerce and we

Next year’s River Festival is also a priority. “I’d like to see more community involvement with the program and with the stalls, so we’re hoping to establish a group to have input into the festival for next year.” The next Chamber of Commerce meeting will be held in February, date to be announced. Summer action on the Green BOWLING Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 14 December A full-house of 56 bowlers attended today to compete in the usual Wednesday competition. This week it was Nominated Fours. There was some doubt as to play actually commencing due to the very hot playing conditions. The temperature reached 38.8 degrees in the shade at one stage with the only factor keeping the bowlers on the green being a very pleasant sea breeze. The organisers decided that play would be limited to one game of 18 ends without a break for lunch. This format was well received

and many bowlers took the opportunity to have lunch and a few cold ones after the game. The scoring formula was 20 points for the win plus ends won. The winning side, with a score of +31 was the team of Gary Wynne, Geoff Fowler, Ken Devlin and Mark Hair. Well done! In second place, also on a score of +31 was the team of David Garcia, Peter Gurney, Bob Weir and Bill Whalan. Wednesday bowls will resume on 11 January 2017. 16 December In contrast to Wednesday, light drizzle for most of the morning put paid to Friday Open Pairs. There was a small field in any case with many players preoccupied with cleaning out fridges and

LAST week Myall Masters swimmers Leon Bobako, Chris Mobbs and Laurie Vickery travelled to Western Sydney to compete in West’s Masters Club twilight meet. For Bobako it was a nostalgic return to where his swimming prowess was firmly instilled by his coach, the renowned Vic Arneil. No longer a 13-year-old lad who turned up every day to train in the Birrong Swimming Pool, Leon’s swimming technique (learnt those many years ago) was evident with him placing first in all entered events.
