Town rejuvenation A DEVELOPMENT proposal aimed at “rejuvenating Bulahdelah” was the topic of discussion at a community meeting held last week. The proposed project includes a highway service centre, 200 room hotel and a residential subdivision on land adjacent to Bulahdelah Golf Club. Hamptons Property Services representative Mrs Kristy Hodgkinson said the land for the project had been purchased by two private investors in August last year and a planning proposal had been submitted to MidCoast Council.
The project is expected to create 180 employment opportunities and increase spending in Bulahdelah by an estimated 400 percent. Mrs Hodgkinson said MidCoast Council had appointed an Independent Consultant to examine the proposal. Speaking with News Of The Area, Investor Peter Kampfner said he was very excited about the development. “I believe this will rejuvenate Bulahdelah, and support the township and CONTINUED Page 2

Development proposal discussed at meeting Mrs Garrod told News Of The Area, “The business owners on the main street are collectively concerned about how the proposal will affect their businesses.” “I believe that the development will not help the town,” she said. return it to its pre-bypass glory,” Mr Kampfner said. “The development will bring a 33 percent increase in population to the town and with an additional 800 visitors from the hotel each week, every service and every business will benefit.” Mr Kampfner said in addition to the development, Bulahdelah would be heavily promoted to funnel people into the town. “We will pay for signposting, advertisements and billboards. We will cover all the expenses ourselves and do whatever it takes to bring people here,” he said. The proposed project has meet with mixed reactions from the local community. Owner of Shiralee Café Chris Garrod presented a petition against the development signed by 15 businesses.
Allan Freihaut believes the development can do nothing but boost the town. “Bums on seats in every business house is what the town needs to grow and secure its future,” he said. “This would be a perfect opportunity to keep our youth in town
instead of chasing jobs elsewhere.” Last week’s meeting was hosted by Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. President John Sahyoun said further community meetings would be held throughout the development process.

One of the defences raised was that the post comprised an “honest opinion”; however the defendant conceded he had made no enquiries at all about the truth of the matters in his post, before publishing it.
The court awarded $100,000.00 as general damages (that is, compensatory damages for the injury done to the owner) plus an additional $50,000.00 as aggravated damages (that is to recognise the defendant’s aggravating conduct including his continued assertions that, despite the absence of any evidence, the matters he had published in his Facebook post were true). The case is yet another reminder of the great care that should be taken when making comments on Facebook or on social media generally, since if the substance of those comments is defamatory, the potential for very substantial damages awards, clearly exists: Rothe v Scott (No. 4) [2016] NSWDC 160.

PINDIMAR teen Emily Legge said she felt “pleased and relieved” after completing her HSC Music Practical Examination last week. Although Emily is only in Year 11, an innovative approach to Senior Studies at Medowie Christian School enabled her to complete the Preliminary and HSC Music Courses in just 12 months. Emily performed four piano solos which included Chopin’s Nocturne 0p.3, the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven and Comptine Aute Ete by contemporary French composer Yann Tiersen. Her preparation for the examination was in good hands with the assistance of her school music teacher Mr Brendan Wright along with Hawks Nest pianist Michael Harvey and Tea Gardens piano teacher Margaret Rowling. Despite spending up to five hours a day practicing the challenging pieces, Emily said she felt “quite nervous” facing the panel of external markers. “All the practice and hard work
I had put in over the past year came down to just 20 minutes,” Emily said. “I was very happy with my performances and my friends were waiting for me when I came out, we all celebrated together,” she said. With the HSC examination over, Emily said she is looking forward to just playing for

More than 4,500 students statewide studied music as part of their Higher School Certificate this year. Last week’s music examinations bring an end to the HSC practical marking. Students now have a few weeks of study ahead of them in preparation for the HSC written examinations which commence with English on 13 October.

Thumbs up for health expo
COMMUNITY transport, mobility aids, legal planning and chair based exercises were just a few of the many presentations given at the Bulahdelah Health Expo held at the Bowling Club last week. The event was organised by Bulahdelah Community Health Committee and voted an overwhelming success by the residents who attended throughout the day. The presentations included a range of talks, demonstrations, practical exercises and displays aimed at providing information on health related topics relevant to the residents of the area. Health Committee member Gary Haynes said Jo Varley’s talk on the aged care portal and services was well-received. “She provided amusing examples of some of the experiences of her officers in the field, such as being confronted by snakes while visiting houses and mistakenly providing cleaning services to the
wrong house,” he said. “Her anecdotes brought hearty laughs from those attending the seminar.” Mr Haynes also said the “Vital Living-Mobility Aids” presentation by David Varley included practical demonstrations of some of the aids available to assist people with mobility difficulties. “He demonstrated aids which can be used to put on socks and undergarments plus a range of tools for opening containers and safely

handling boiling water,” Mr Haynes said. Other highlights during the day included a presentation on available transport options by Jennifer Hadfield, Lawyer Carol Abela’s talk about the legal aspects of Wills and the presentation given by Sue Tripney on slips, trips and falls. Yoga teacher Christine Defresne guided participants through a range of exercises that can be conducted at home and dietician Kirsten Swan explained that dietary
needs were “not a one-size fits all process.” Local community groups were also involved throughout the day with the Bulahdelah Men’s Shed providing a display on bee hives and the Uke Group entertaining the crowd during lunch. Mr Haynes said more than 50 community members attended the event and unanimously expressed pleasure and support for the day.

Students get a taste of high school By Daniel SAHYOUN
YEAR six students from around the region had a taste of high school life last week by trying some of the subjects they will study next year. The Showcase Day took place at Tea Gardens Public School with secondary teachers from Bulahdelah Central School on hand to show the young students that learning can be fun. Getting lost in a zoo creating etymological animals, rolling up to test mathematical skills in a game of Greedy Pig and finding out how cool science can be by making elephant toothpaste were just a few of the many lessons on offer. The Showcase Day is an initiative of the Myall Learning Community and helps to make the big step to high school a little easier for the students. Bulahdelah Central School Year 10 student Luke Rochester has assisted at the Showcase event for the past four years. As a former Tea Gardens Public School student, Luke
q
said he enjoys returning each year to reassure the students that high school isn’t as daunting as they may think. “It’s good being able to get to know the primary students and show them some of the great things we do at school,” Luke said. “There are more specialised subjects offered and being a smaller school, you get to know everyone very quickly.” The students participating in the day came from Booral, Coolongolook, Bulahdelah, Bungwahl and Tea Gardens Primary Schools with most students planning to start high school together in Bulahdelah next year. Tea Gardens Principal Mr Mark Clemson said the Showcase provided the students with an understanding of the new environment they will be entering. “It breaks down the unknown and reduces the anxiety and fear some of the students are feeling,” he said. “It also provides an opportunity for students from different schools to get
to know one another.” Mr Clemson said an additional benefit of the day was that it allowed the secondary staff to build connections with the students before they start their high school journey. o Phot ery Gall line On

Visitor Information Bag TEA Gardens Visitor Information Centre has come up with a new initiative based on the old fashioned idea of a “sample bag”. Made from recycled paper, the bag holds a veritable treasure trove of information for tourists wanting to know what the area has to offer. “The Information Centre Network has produced the bag and we have maps, walks, if it’s a wet day a visit to Medowie Macadamias, ferry info, national park and camping information,’’ Jill Madden told the News Of The Area. Jill is an expert on the Myall Coast area having volunteered at the Centre for nearly a decade.
VOLUNTEERS: Rob Hughes and Jill Madden.
“It’s that local knowledge that’s so important for short term visitors to town.” “You connect with people, you can give them (tourists) a loop round town, where to eat where to get a cup of coffee, bushwalks, the best views, the national park, rivers, beaches and bay.” “You want someone to give you information quickly, and simply in a friendly environment without any bias towards a particular business or tour, ‘’ said Jill. Jill is also passing on her wealth of local knowledge to new volunteer, Rob Hughes. “I’m new to the town and want to contribute to the area,” said Rob. On average, more than
10 thousand visitors walk through the doors of the Tea Garden Information Centre every year. “We even have a book exchange for tourists, they can come in swap a book, or buy a new one for a gold coin donation,” said Jill. The Centre is open 7 days a week, every day of the year except Christmas Day and it’s all run by volunteers. “Because we’re open every day, we always need more volunteers,” said Jill. The Tea Gardens Visitor Information Centre can be found at 245 Myall Street, or online at www. teagardensonline.com.au

Major Day Out Understanding of dementia By Adrienne INGRAM
VOLUNTEERS from Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens joined thousands around Australia attacking weeds during Bushcare’s Major Day Out. Sixteen local Bitou Busters worked removing asparagus weed from Bennetts beach dunes, one of 250 sites across the nation. For several members, this was their first outing with new tick-proof overalls donated by Bushcare’s Major Day Out. Their work and banners near the Surf Club attracted interest from local residents and visitors alike.
Sunday 11 September was a national day of community participation in the care of our bush and dunes. The Bitou Buster volunteers meet monthly to maintain Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens bushland by controlling environmental weeds, clearing rubbish that has no habitat value and planting native species. The Bitou Busters are supported by Mid Coast Council and the NSW Environment Trust Fund, promoting the work done in this area by the Bitou Busters who raise awareness of the environment in the community.
OPINION
Dear News Of The Area, DURING Dementia Awareness Month, which runs throughout September, Alzheimer’s Australia is calling for greater awareness and understanding of dementia so people living with the condition feel less isolated and alone. There are more than 353,000 Australians with dementia and an estimated
1.2 million people involved in the care of someone with dementia. In the Myall Lakes, Newcastle, Port Stephens and Upper Hunter electorates there are an estimated 5,650 people living with dementia. That figure is projected to increase to about 12,150 by 2050. A survey just released by Alzheimer’s Australia has found that people with
dementia are almost twice as likely to have high rates of loneliness, and people with dementia and carers are significantly more lonely than the general population. We hear repeatedly that when someone is diagnosed with dementia, friendships and some family relationships suddenly disappear because people simply don’t know how to interact with their friend or loved one with dementia. Treating people with the same respect,
kindness, inclusiveness and thoughtfulness you always have is what makes a difference to them. They are still the same person they were before the diagnosis. They just may need a little bit more time, understanding and support. I encourage your readers to find out more by going to www.fightdementia.org.au. John Watkins AM Chief Executive Officer Alzheimer’s Australia NSW

I HAVE recently returned from an extended holiday to find Council has made footpath cycleway from corner Ibis Avenue to

older cyclists from veering into path of motorists who often speed down this section from top of bridge, or for motorists to veer onto path. Please act promptly

Great job, thanks Dear News Of The Area, ON behalf of the Karuah RSL Sub Branch members I would like to thank you for the recent articles in the NOTA in relation to our Vietnam Veterans Day Service and the dedication of our Memorial Wall. Your journalists put a lot of effort into making this interesting and informative – would you please pass on our appreciation. The Sub Branch appreciates your support and we look forward to continuing this relationship with you.

Dear News Of The Area, LAST summer I was fascinated to see a brush turkey mound just south of the surf club car park at Bennett’s Beach. You could watch the male busily adjusting the temperature by adding or removing mulch from the mound, ever mindful of the exact conditions the eggs require to hatch. This process is most unconventional for birds. Rather than using the body heat of a sitting bird to hatch their eggs, these animals use the heat generated by decaying vegetable matter within the nest mound. Their huge feet are perfect for the ongoing scraping required
for temperature regulation. A constant range of 33 to 38 degrees is critical to success. Above or below this band will always result in the loss of the chicks. The bird’s bill is used as a thermometer, constantly monitoring the heat of the mound. Even before they are hatched the chicks are vulnerable, goannas and other predatory animals are a constant threat the male adult must guard against. Once hatched however, the young are rather wellequipped for survival and this is most fortunate because the ever-protective father will then suddenly leave. From then on the chicks are on their own. From the start they are fully-feathered, are able to walk and can fly within a few hours of their entry into the world.

Koala Group talk turkey OPINION
The Australian brushturkey is presently enjoying a rise in population and distribution, having successfully adapted to the suburbs and to recent changes in human behaviour. It loves our mulch- covered native gardens – the perfect place to build its mound. As well, most dogs are now contained within properties and ideally most cats as well, so a significant hazard to chick-raising has now diminished. The Australian brushturkey has a mainly black body plumage, a bare red head, a yellow throat wattle (pale blue in northern birds) and a laterally flattened tail. Its range extends along eastern Australia, from Cape York Peninsula south to the Illawarra region of New South Wales.
Insects, seeds and fallen fruit are their main foods and they obtain these by raking through leaf litter or breaking open rotting logs. For this their over-large feet again become most useful. Generally they are wary of humans although they can become very tame around picnic grounds and homes, particularly if they are fed. Feeding them, or any native animal, is not recommended. Brush turkeys are not every gardener’s first passion since they can be destructive. Within a few hours these birds are

capable of stripping away groundcovers and mulch, with which to build their mounds and not everyone enjoys having a nest mound as a dominant garden feature. When this happens, the attraction of having one of these wonderful birds living on a property can lose its fascination. Some methods to deter them could be useful, provided that they are implemented when there are no eggs within the mound. A search online will provide a range of practical methods you could employ, so that your garden
remains your garden and the ever-interesting brush turkeys are unharmed and free to reproduce elsewhere. OPINION
Amanda and Marcus Sykes along with Sharon and Alan Townsend certainly put a lot of effort into the fun events created for the not-so-young athletes, with winners of each event presented with medals & certificates. Amanda said she looked forward to it becoming a special event – but certainly not having to wait another 4 years to do it again! The day finally culminating with an hilarious ‘Closing Ceremony’. Champion athlete and point scorer on the day was Eddie Lonsdale, with Judy Gilbert a very close runner-up. It was voted a fun and fabulous day - the lake was alive with the laughter of all those competing! Any seriousness was soon abated with many compulsory ‘refreshment breaks’ and followed with a delicious BBQ.

Bowls week at Karuah BOWLS
Karuah Mens Bowls By Trevor DAVIES AS a rule, “bowling clubs” are not “service clubs” like say, a Lions Club or a Rotary Club! They are set up by their members, specifically to foster, support and encourage their own particular activity and in the case of bowls clubs that is the sport of Lawn Bowls. That of course, makes this week’s Karuah Women’s Bowls Club Oncology Day even more special. Led by the Women’s Club and their ever active and popular President, Robyn Latimore, the whole club again focused on raising funds for the Calvary Mater Hospital Oncology Unit. Bowlers and Supporters from the whole district came to Karuah, bowled, took part in quizzes, raffles, tom bowlers, and other activities, bought and ate a lunch provided by the Calvary Mater Oncology women’s
support group and raised some $5,000 to help in the fight against Cancer. We might be bowlers, but who amongst us doesn’t hate cancer and want this dreadful curse beaten once and for all. On The competition front, our grade Three 3 x 3 team was knocked out of the comp last week, while our grade 2 team remains firmly in the Wednesday afternoon competition. Socially, the excellent series of “Gala” or club competitions continues on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (names on the sheet or rung through by 09:30, first bowls at 10:00) and Mike Denko and Peter Green our games directors are planning ever bigger Social Saturday competitions. One our members, Trevor Barclay, received his formal qualification as a National Level Lawn Bowls Umpire this month which will provide valuable as we have some inter club visits coming up,
which should spice up the social comp and provide great social interchange with other bowling clubs in our region. It is hoped that as part of the Karuah RSL Sub Branch participation in next month’s Veterans Health Week, a joint Karuah RSL Men’s Bowls Club and Karuah RSL Sub Branch bowls activity can be staged. The bowlers and the Sub Branch members already have much in common. There is a real affection for our Sub Branch members by the bowlers and this sees them keen to contribute and participate in this important Veterans Health Week. This activity when conducted may result in a feature story in a later article. The bowling year rolls on (pun intended!). If you see bowlers on the green at Karuah, drop by and say gooday! The RSL veranda is a lovely place to enjoy a refreshing drink and meet some friendly bowlers, it’s a great sport. See you at Karuah.

As for the awards, Josh Simms won most Tries with 23, Rookie of the Year went to Nathan Ritzau. Coaches Award to Tim Johnson and Dylan Foley

Dolphin Day Triples BOWLS Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling By The JAFFA 14 SEPTEMBER: The rain came early today preventing any play before lunch in the usual Nominated Triples competition. A look at the radar showed that there was likely to be a break about mid-morning and so it happened. The synthetic green had time to drain and 24 diehards managed to play 20
enjoyable ends. They fitted nicely onto 4 rinks. The runaway winners were; Ray Prigg, Steve Jones and Ron Webster. They finished with +39. In second place with a more modest score of +29 was the team of; Peter Jones Stewart Sturrock and Brian Emmett. Rounding out third place on +24 were; John Slater, Bruce Everitt and Max Stephens. 16 September: With the Club Dolphin Day to be played the next day only 8 players expressed an interest in playing in the Friday Open
Jackpot Pairs, insufficient numbers to justify playing the competition. 17 September: In what has now become a tradition at the Tea Gardens Country Club Bowling Club, Dolphin Day was played today. This event commenced in 2009 and is a commemorative event to remind bowlers of those friends and fellow bowlers who have passed away. It consists of a flag lowering and raising by the two bowling club Presidents during the playing of the last post and the reveille. The competition that followed consisted of 12
ends of turn-around triples which balanced out the teams nicely to ensure some close contests. A good field of 48 players participated in ideal playing conditions. It was great to see some new bowlers sharing the fun. The team of; Diane Kiss, Ray Prigg and Noel Jackson won the day on an impressive +18. In second place on +16 were; Christine Fossey, Graeme Watkins and Kathie Rimmer whilst filling third place was; John Slater, Lily Smith and David Williams. The organisers would like to thank the Sunday Introduction to Bowls programme for providing their usual support the cooks

Myall Classic Paddle By Margie TIERNEY MORE than 300 Paddlers gathered under perfect skies in Tea Gardens last weekend for the annual Myall Classic Ultramarathon. The event, now in it’s 14th year, has become one of the “ must do’s” on the paddlers’ calendar. “There are 5 different divisions which cover a 47 kilometre race, a 27 k and a 12 kilometre paddle,” Volunteer organiser Anne Cowper told the News Of The Area. Paddlers also use it as a training race in the run up to the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic, which requires plenty of stamina to cover over 100 kilometres. Chairman of PaddleNSW Tony Hysteck was also keen to point out the benefits of the Myall Classic Race to the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest region. “We’re a not-for-profit
organisation,” he said. “This year we’re putting all our funds raised from the Myall Classic into local emergency services, the SES and local Marine Rescue.” “In future, we’d like to engage more with local organisations who are doing things for the local community,” said Tony. The event is great for tourism in the twin towns with paddlers coming from as far away as Wagga Wagga and Canberra. The sport is also a family affair, where age is not a hindrance with competitors ranging from 9 years old to 80 years young. “There’s the vet/juniors class, 4 of those taking part today,, parents taking their kids along ,” said Tony. “It’s a great introduction to canoeing.” For more information and results visit: www.paddlensw. org.au
