THE ‘Story of The Piano’ is a tale of music from Beethoven to Elton John, and almost everyone in between. Last year local resident and Award-Winning Pianist, Michael Harvey, brought us ‘The Piano Story’. Since then he has been reworking and revising the show and now brings to Tea Gardens the brilliance of that show with a few exciting additions, both musically and visually.
You will hear Michael play his great selection of our favourite piano compositions from Bach and Beethoven, Scott Joplin and Winifred Atwell, Duke Ellington, Liberace, Ferrante and Teicher, Richard Clayderman, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elton John, Billy Joel, Yiruma, and many more. Michael’s Performance, with narration and visual
presentation throughout this 80-minute show, will again delight music and piano lovers of all generations. As always, Michael will make a generous donation from the concert ticket sales and this time has chosen The Samaritan Children’s Christmas Box Appeal, and the Vinnies Drought Relief Appeal to be the recipients from the two concerts. ‘Bloody Long Walk’ challenge 35km Challenge FROM Page 1 Ochre Health Medical Centre in Tea Gardens will know Andrea Hammond as the young receptionist who is always there to greet you with a ready smile and a kind word. Andrea along with three other Ochre employees will soon be stepping out from behind the desk and the care of their patients, to take part in what’s
called ‘The Bloody Long Walk’. “I wanted to do something and then I found this on Facebook and the stories were so inspiring and so sad, I thought that’s it,” Andrea said. ‘The Bloody Long Walk’ is a 35 kilometre challenge from Belmont to Newcastle to raise funds for research into the heartbreaking disease, Mitochondrial. ‘Mito’ can affect anyone of any age. Sometimes it’s caused by an
inherited gene mutation while for others it has a spontaneous onset with no known cause. The effects are devastating on both the sufferer and their families. When the Lions Club’s Jeff Fowler learnt about Andrea’s fundraising initiative, he didn’t hesitate to suggest to his colleagues that the Lions Club get on board. “It’s a local group of young people who are doing something off their own bat,” Jeff said.
“It personifies our community and how generous and how willing they are to help,” he said. Last week, Jeff and other Lions Club members donated $500 to the Ochre’s fundraising efforts for ‘Mito’. If you’d like to support the Ochre staff in their 35 kilometre challenge you can drop off your donation at the Medical Centre at Myall Quays or head to the website, www.bloodylongwalk. com.au

CONTESTED WILLS… THE COURT PROCEDURE When a person intends to contest a Will, after establishing eligibility, he or she must commence proceedings in the Supreme Court. The District Court has jurisdiction however the Supreme Court is the preferred venue. The FPA list (as it is called) in the Supreme Court is managed by His Honour Justice Hallen. When the Summons commencing proceedings is filed, it is necessary for the applicant to file an Affidavit in support of the claim. A Court practice note sets out those matters which must be addressed in the Affidavit in support of the claim. The executor of the estate or the administrator (if there is no Will) is then obliged to file an Affidavit in response to the claimant’s Affidavit and also a further Affidavit as to the status of the estate giving information as to its value and the current position in relation to the administration of the estate. Once proceedings have been commenced, all other persons who may be eligible to make a claim are informed of the proceedings to give them an opportunity to be part of the proceedings if they so wish. The proceedings will not be listed for hearing until such time as a mediation has taken place with a view of trying to resolve the claim. His Honour has further “fine-tuned” the process. For

example where an estate is worth less than $500,000.00 and there is a claim then as soon as possible after commencement of the proceedings his Honour lists the matter for a Judge appointed settlement conference. At this conference, all parties must attend at the Court with their legal representatives. His Honour speaks directly to the parties (in the presence of their legal representatives) in the open court room to explain to them why it is in their interest that they settle the matter. He then allows them the opportunity (on that day) to have a discussion with a view of trying to reach a resolution. In respect of an estate in which there is a claim and the estate is worth more than $500,000.00 but less than $1,000,000.00, the case is referred to mediation with a court appointed mediator. In respect of estates with a value in excess of $1,000,000.00, the parties must engage in mediation however a private mediator must be engaged by the parties. The success rate (i.e. achieving settlement of the claim) of mediations and judge appointed settlement conferences is high. If a settlement is achieved then orders are made and the proceedings are at an end and the estate can be finalised taking into consideration those orders.

Annual Chris Hoare Cup
By Michaela SAWTELL
GLOUCESTER High School made the trip to the Jack Ireland Sports ground this year, where Bulahdelah put on a splendid show of weather for the Annual Chris Hoare Cup, after the event was postponed due to weeks of rain, with the sports ground sodden at the end of last Term.
This alternate date provided a dry ground and a great day for participants and community spectators. For Bulahdelah Central High, the SRC (Student Representative Council) and the MC (Multi Category) class, led by the very capable Nicole Depater at the BBQ hot plate, worked well together to provide sausage sandwiches, and cold drinks
to the flanks of sports people and supporters. The day kicked off in Bulahdelah’s favour with our Under 15 Girls Soccer team securing a dream result against their fierce counterparts. This Bulahdelah team has strengthened over the years with many of the players playing in the town Soccer competition.
Amber Cunningham set the pace, scoring the first goal. Raylee Kierens was on the attack, scoring the second goal. Gloucester did not stand a chance with Emma-Rose Carruthers as the stopper, creating a brick wall you could not get past. With Amber scoring a third goal, we arrived at the final end result of 3-1 to Bulahdelah. Regrettably, Bulahdelah were not so lucky in the Boy’s Soccer this year, Gloucester simply proved to be too strong, however, it is important to mention memorable performances by Bailey Middleton who lead the attack and the good job done by our goal keeper Josh Little, who did pull off some spectacular saves. Unfortunately, our Girls Touch Football team were no match for the highly polished Gloucester Open Girls team. The Gloucester team outshone us, but it was clear their team had been playing together for many years, however, our girls were heroic in their attempts and displayed solid sportsmanship qualities in
Abbott to take on Kate at the next Election By Marian SAMPSON and Rachael VAUGHAN
THE results of the next NSW Elections will see Port Stephens led by a truly powerful woman regardless of results, continuing on from our current female leadership under Kate Washington MP. Local small businesswoman and RAAF reserve Squadron Leader Jaimie Abbott, is asking the community for their support at the 2019 NSW Election as the Liberal Candidate for Port Stephens. Labor’s Kate Washington currently holds the seat. Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “I will have a five month old baby at the time of the Election and I will be like thousands of other working mothers in Port Stephens, Jacinda Ardern Prime Minister
q Jaimie Abbott. of New Zealand has proven that having a baby doesn’t affect the way you represent the people, I’ll be no different from any other working mother.” She believes that she is well able to work with all levels of Government to create great outcomes and to make the lives of the people of Port Stephens better. Jaimie has an impressive history of service to the
community, having spent seven years as the President of Hunter Animal Rescue, is a volunteer fill-in presenter for Port Stephens FM, was on the committee of the Hunter Business Women’s Network and volunteered for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Volunteer Support Group. As a Communications Adviser for the Royal Australian Air Force, Jaimie participated in international Air Force exercises in Malaysia, Hawaii, Alaska, The Philippines, and Guam. In 2011, she was deployed for six months to Afghanistan, earning the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Australian Active Service Medal and the NATO Medal. “I’ve had an incredible career to date, but the opportunity to represent my community in State Parliament
is the most exciting,” she said. Abbott in her short time as a Councillor has delivered on many promises, while Kate Washington has fought hard for her community since being elected in March 2015. Kate Washington MP told News Of The Area, “I congratulate Jaimie Abbott on her candidacy. I respect her brave decision and look forward to a clean campaign, focussed on the issues of importance to our community.” “For me, it’s business as usual. I’ll continue to work hard, representing our amazing community, and fighting for all that we deserve.” Two things are certain, there will be more promises, and there are two strong women, both determined to take the seat at Parliament House for Port Stephens.
the wake of defeat. This can be said of all our Bulahdelah School students. The players were gracious in their victories and defeats, both on and off the field. Even though we had injuries inflicted on our players and some results that did not go our way, it was the display of sincere sportsmanship from our Bulahdelah students which was the most noticeable and commendable on the day. We started the day well with an outstanding performance from our highly polished, well-oiled, try scoring, and Under 14s Rugby League team. Even though the Gloucester boys proved to be hard hitters, they simply could not even get a single point on the board. The team worked extremely well together, with many of the players, Tommy Keen, Khye Brown and Tyson Haenschke scoring tries. Zachary Watt scored two tries for us, with the remaining of the ten tries in total being scored by Angus Devon and Billy Watt, who played exceptionally. Our Open Boys Rugby League team unfortunately proved unsuccessful against the Gloucester boys from the bush. The Gloucester team was mainly made up of senior students, contrary to our slightly more junior based side. Our team was spirited,
tough and committed, with many playing with niggling injuries, but simply could not rattle Gloucester’s strong defense. The Chris Hoare Cup trophy itself was presented graciously by Jenny and Steve Hoare, to Gloucester with the most wins from various events on the day. A special and most honourable mention, of our very own John Barry (General Assistant) and a friend of BCS and member of the Tea Gardens Hawks Rugby League Club, Neil Reynolds the day would not have run without their unexpected involvement. Both these great blokes had the opportunity to display their inexhaustible sporting prowess when they rose to the occasion, replacing our referee, who had to pull out at the last minute. The men were energetic, fair and spoke highly of the students ‘sportsmanship’ that they witnessed firsthand on the field. Thank you John Barry for your assistance on the field. Thank you so very much Neil Reynolds for your hard work on the field. This is also extended to the other members of the Hawks Rugby League Club who supported our players by attending urgently to injuries inflicted on the field.

Palm Lake Donation By Margie TIERNEY THE Myall Coast News Of The Area has had the great privilege over recent weeks of reporting the remarkable efforts of our locals in raising much needed funds for our drought stricken farmers. The latest gold star goes to the residents of Palm Lake Resort in Tea Gardens. “With all the recent publicity around the drought and learning how all of NSW is affected, particularly local Hunter and lower New England areas, the Social Committee looked at how they could run a fundraiser,” Helen O’Harae told News of The Area. “The Bar Committee already had organised a ‘Winter Warmer’ lunch for residents, so the Presidents, Merry Hughes and Susan Farrar, put it to both the committees that members of the Social Committee would fundraise at this event.”
Susan contacted Rural Aid Ltd, a charity run by volunteers, which operates in the area, and is sponsoring a “Buy a Bale’ program. “A flyer advertising the fundraiser was distributed to all residents, offering those who were not able to attend the lunch a means of donating as well,” Helen said. “Residents were offered the choice of buying a bale for $20 or $50, or making a donation of any amount.” Not only was the Sunday afternoon get-together great fun but it was a great fundraiser for our farmers. The Palm Lake residents raised $5,596.95. Helen said, “It was a mammoth result from about 400 residents with the Social Committee overwhelmed by the residents’ generosity.”

The Marathon was the brainchild of Bianca Starcic. “We are always trying to think of new ways to get people involved with the Convoy, and we have a team of amazing riders who have been fundraising leading up to the event.” “The idea began as a ride
from Newcastle to Sydney and eventually with lots of discussion, turned into a ride from Evans Head to the Dandaloo Hotel,” said Bianca. Riding 1,000 kilometres over seven days is certainly a gruelling task, but the riders are taking inspiration from the children and families who

are doing it extremely tough due to life threatening medical conditions. “It is children and families like these, that funds raised during the i98FM Illawarra Convoy support, through the Illawarra Community Foundation’s funding process,” Bianca said.
The Illawarra Convoy is now in its 13th year and sees hundreds of trucks and bikes travel in convoy raising funds for the local community. Last year it raised nearly $2 million. Bianca Starcic is confident her team will go a long way to adding to the total this year.

Bad Paris By Rachael VAUGHAN MEDOWIE turned on the event of the year with their recent ‘Medowie Bales Out The Drought’ fundraiser, but this weekend they’re making sure you know that they don’t just party once in a blue moon. The Medowie Bull ‘n Bush offers all what is great about small town pubs: great food, great atmosphere and great support of live music and entertainment for their patrons to kick up their heels. This Friday, Bad Paris is packing the bags and heading overseas, well Stockton Bridge that is, to kick it with Medowie and turn on a great night for all. Bad Paris is a four piece Rock band with attitude, and that attitude is to keep the dance floor rocking with a collection of Rock music from the 70s to now.
This pumping band consists of guitar, bass, drums and female lead vocal. All band members sing, so that gives a depth in the band that enables them to be able to play a multitude of music, covering most styles and decades. Bad Paris consists of Alicia Hignell on lead vocals, John McFadyen on lead guitar/ vocals, Anthony Robinson on drums/vocals and Liam Rocker on bass/vocals. This is a great band with its members playing for many years, gelling together to be a very tight unit. The band members have over 80 years combined gigging experience across Australia and overseas. Give yourself a night out, head on over to the town that knows how to put on a good party, enjoy a bite to eat and then hit the dance floor to dance the night away.

Big Club Week Raising Money Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA
15 AUGUST: Our mates in rural areas are doing it tough at the moment and the Club, in conjunction with the Tea Gardens Country Club, decided that today should be dedicated to raising money for our farmers. It started out that the main aim was to raise at least $1,000 for the day. This quickly snowballed when the Women’s Club came on board and donations of cash and kind soon followed. What a wonderful day it turned out to be. With 48 players participating, the day commenced with a “spider” which was won by the old “silver fox”, Tom Parkinson. Bowls followed with one game of 18 ends and when the wind picked up it was a testing day for all players. As there was no prizes on the day one game should mentioned. It was the Dave Perry side playing the Dennis Ashbridge trio. After 6 ends Dennis and Co led 12/1, Dave’s team then won all but 1 end of the next 12 to win 31/13. Dennis was last seen leaving the club still shaking his head, well done David Perry, Col Saillard and Greg Smith Lunch was next on the agenda, 150 gourmet sausages prepared by master chef George Winter and his apprentice Frank (Jamie Oliver) Dunn. This was presented inside the club with freshly baked bread and accompanying condiments, what value at only $2 donation. Next was the raffle and how good was this, the Fishing Co-op donated a wonderful seafood tray and Jeff’s Meats donated 2 great BBQ trays. Members brought along bottles of wine, port, and scotch, the Myall Bistro voucher $20 and Colour The Green donated a lovely shirt from their new range, a big THANKS to everyone. Well the result, including the ladies collection and prior donations, the total came in at $3000 more than triple the initial goal, well done! But wait, there’s more: the Country Club has added a further $20,000, how good is this? $23,000 from the locals to help those on the land at a time of need! Brilliant effort everyone! 17 August: Friday Open Pairs attracted 18 players today playing on the immaculately prepared grass green. Bliss! Two teams recorded 30 points for the day but it was the team of Barry Goode and Col Saillard that bagged the bragging rights for the week. In other news: The Club Mixed Pairs commences next weekend with 13 teams entered for the competition. There will be some interesting matches and good bowls played.

Mrs TH, Salt Ash
FIFO is a very good acronym. Husbands or wives who work away fly in and fly out of each others lives at regular intervals and the transitional times can create disruption and despondency. Most people, on their return, will have one thing on their minds. You guessed it, they will want to start up their mower and give the lawn a good once over. Yes, Mrs TH, we are talking euphemisms here. Once the post-mow glow is over, however, it can be a time where both parties feel exhausted. The one who has been away has been working hard and missing out on family events, and the one left at home has been working equally hard, often juggling not just employment, but all the household duties, including those that had previously been shared. Children also get used to having one parent around, and suddenly they have to share mum or dad again. This can be particularly difficult when the parents have different parenting styles. While Dad is away it may be totally acceptable to eat pancakes for dinner and use the dog as a dishwasher, but the ‘normal’ status quo can take time to re-establish. I would suggest that the best way around this issue is to communicate. Discuss your hidden resentments instead of allowing them to fester like a boil that will no doubt explode at a very inappropriate time, like when you are paired up in Boxercise and practising your uppercuts (though this will be easy to get away with, as the uppercut is the most incorrectly thrown punch in boxing and you can just blame poor technique). Look at the big picture and think about why this arrangement is in place. Things could be worse. You could work together. Now there’s a recipe for a complete marriage breakdown.

Pad Up for Cricket By Margie TIERNEY
WITH the Football season nearly over for another year, it’s nearing the time for our youngsters to get out the pads and knock the cobwebs off their Cricket bats. The Karuah Tea Gardens District Cricket Club season is not far away, starting juniors and seniors in early October. “Being a small Club, our focus is on developing the kids first and making sure they keep playing with us into future,” Secretary/ Treasurer Colin McCarthy told News Of The Area. ‘’The Juniors will field teams from Under 10s to
Under 16s in the Maitland Junior Competition,” Colin said. “Numbers will govern the ages we enter, girls can play up to two years under their age, so if they are 14 as at 1st September they can play U13s or U14s.” “Boys player ages are also 1st September, so if they are 12 they are eligible for U13s.” Colin added, “Seniors will field two teams in the Dungog District Competition and you can play provided you are 12 years and over as at 1st September.” “Last year both teams made the finals and we won one major title.” “All teams have Level One qualified coaches and are
q there to help the kids and the older kids, as well.” “All our coaches have ‘Working with Children Checks’ cleared. The Club’s Facebook page

WE ARE SELLING THIS ADVERTISING SPACE Call 02 4981 8882 or email ads@mcnota.com.au By Margie TIERNEY UP and coming local track star Keira McGregor is off to Sydney this weekend for the start of a big month of State Championship competitions. Recently, the 12 year old Hawks Nest youngster competed in her Schools Zone Athletics Carnival and won every personal events she entered. “She came first in her favourite events, the 100 metre, 200 metre and long jump,” proud dad John Mcgregor said. “In addition, she took part
in discus and shotput events and also won them which was surprising, as she does not have the build and strength for these events, but she has a good technique that carried her through,” John said. “The exciting thing though, was from her 100m performance where her time as a 12 year old was the fastest time of the day over all age groups up to 18 years old.” “This being a great warm up for future events.” In addition to her personal events, Keira was selected to run in both the

Juniors (12-14 years) and the Seniors (15-18 years) 4 x 100 metres races. “She was the final runner in both of these events which were held immediately after each other. In both races she was far behind the other teams on receiving the baton, but ran incredible races and chased those older athletes ahead making up ground and achieving 2nd and 3rd places respectively for her school.” The Medowie Christian School student is now training hard ahead of two Athletic competitions being held at Sydney’s Olympic Park this month followed by the NSW All Schools State Championship in September.
