Big bucks from jackpot luck By John SAHYOUN

A BULAHDELAH man struck gold, winning the $100,000 first prize in the Lucky Lotteries Super Jackpot last week. According to NSW Lotteries, the winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, is a hard-working married man who is approaching retirement. The man purchased his winning two-dollar ticket from the Bulahdelah Newsagency. Owner Sue Chick said the lucky winner was an unregistered player. “We don’t know who it was, people who win large amounts usually wish to remain anonymous,” she said. “All our machine tells us is that there has been a win, if

NSW Paramedics have had a small victory in their ongoing campaign for better death and disability insurance cover. The new Premier Gladys Berejiklian has written to the Health Services Union stating her commitment to sorting out paramedic protections. “We are particularly warmed by the positive relationship Ms Berejiklian is building with HSU Secretary Gerard Hayes,” Paramedic Timothy Kirkpatrick said. “This bodes well for the future.” “It’s a good start for our relationship with the new Premier and will go a long way to providing peace of mind for NSW paramedics.”

Water Restrictions a Possibility WHILE temperatures have reached record highs, and river levels have dropped, the community’s responsible use of water has meant a stay on any implementation of water restrictions at this point in time. However, MidCoast Water has advised that restrictions may be necessary if the hot dry spell continues beyond the next three to four weeks or water usage increases. MidCoast Water operates five water supply systems across

the region covering the Manning, Great Lakes, Bulahdelah, Stroud, Gloucester and Tea Gardens areas. All supplies, other than the Tea Gardens supply which is a groundwater source, are dependent on local rivers. Both river levels and water consumption are constantly monitored as part of MidCoast Water’s management of water supplies. The current hot dry weather impacts on water supplies in two ways, the lack of rain

means source supplies are not replenished and the heat often results in more water use than usual. To date water restrictions have been avoided due to the demand remaining reasonable, according to general manager Ken Gouldthorp, who has commended the community for demonstrating responsible water use. “As a result of our community’s responsible use of our water supplies, it has not been necessary to impose water

restrictions to date.” The Manning scheme, which supplies customers from Crowdy Head in the north to Tarbuck Bay in the south and west to Krambach, relies on storage in Bootawa Dam and flows in the Manning River. “With flows in the Manning River decreasing from an average of 4,000 – 5,000 million litres per day to just over 100 million litres per day, we are carefully watching the forecasts.”

retirement. He is also planning on using some of the prize to treat his family. The lottery is a game of luck. For every winner, there are always thousands of losers, so remember to gamble responsibly.

Mr Gouldthorp said that while pumping has stopped at Stroud due to the very low river levels, the off-river storage is being utilised and there is over 100 days of water available in storage. “We do thank our community for their responsible water use and ask that everyone continues to be mindful of their water use over the coming weeks,” Mr Gouldthorp added. MidCoast Water will continue to closely monitor the situation and will advise the community should water restrictions become necessary.

Grandparents Day at the Library By Margie TIERNEY

AS we grow older it’s often the simple pleasures in life that bring us the most joy. Tea Gardens Library is celebrating Seniors Week with a morning called ‘Grandparents Storytime’. “This is a first for Tea Gardens Library,” Librarian Carol Johnson told News Of The Area. Grandparents are invited to join their grandchildren for a morning of stories, songs, rhymes and morning tea . “It is our normal story time slot, so ideally those

children who come, will bring their grandparents with them,” Carol said. “We’ll have three generations in the library, it will be lovely.” The Seniors Week event at Tea Gardens Library is being held on Monday 6 March at 9.30am. Stroud Library is also holding ‘Grandparents Storytime’ on Friday 3 March at 10.30am. Just a reminder that Homework Help is up and running again every Wednesday afternoon at Tea Gardens Library. The program is open to all school aged children from

Kindergarten to Year 12 HSC students. ‘’We have homework help from 3pm until 4.45pm and a lovely group of volunteers who have

had all their police checks and working with children checks to help children with their homework,” Carol said. To check times and

programs you can call the Tea Gardens Library on 4997 1265 or go online: midcoast.greatlakes.nsw. gov.au/library.

Expert psychiatric evidence from 1994 supported a view that the relationship between the deceased and the former wife - that their marriage and its sequelae had unusual and long-lasting consequences for the former wife. It noted that these impacted adversely on her whole subsequent life. She had had care and responsibility for the parties’ daughter for 15 years after the property settlement and this enabled the deceased to continue working and to amass his estate, whilst it adversely impacted on her ability to return to the work force. She had been injured in 3 motor vehicle collisions. The post-divorce

deterioration in her circumstances, the relative paucity of the matrimonial estate at the time of the property settlement, and the fact that she was now reliant on social security in circumstances where the daughter she had raised stood to inherit a large estate, were of significance. The judge concluded that the circumstances warranted the making of a claim by the former wife and, as she had been left with no provision, he awarded her a lump sum legacy of $750,000 from the estate.

In NSW it is possible for a former spouse to have a 2nd bite of the cherry even when there has been a property settlement, if at the date of the hearing of a family provision application, and having regard to all the past and present circumstances of the case, there is an undischarged moral obligation to provide for that former spouse.

THE reopening of Stoney Creek Road between Wootton Way and The Grandis, the tallest tree in New South Wales, was celebrated at an official opening ceremony last weekend. The six-kilometre section of gravel road, an important tourist link, had been closed for three years due to flood damaged bridges. A large crowd of community members gathered at The Grandis Picnic Area in Myall Lakes National Park for the celebrations, which were organised by the Wootton Community Network. President Jim O’Connor said having the road open, providing direct access to The Grandis from Wootton Way, was a boost to local tourism. “The Grandis is a good tourist draw, people know about it and they want to see it,” he said.

“The road repairs were part of the Wootton Strategic Plan, and one of the priorities is getting as many local attractions available as possible.” Mr O’Connor said people from all over the world come through the valley to see The Grandis, Railway Walk and Winery. Speaking during the opening ceremony, Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead praised the Wootton community for their active work in the local area. “Everything that is done as a community to encourage tourism, and the more places there are to see, benefits all of us,” he said. “Every tourist in the area will spend some money somewhere in the local businesses, and that means jobs and opportunities in our area.” Mr Bromhead also acknowledged National Parks and Wildlife Service who

funded the bridge repairs, ensuring continued access for both the community and tourists. MidCoast Council Local Representative Committee member Len Roberts, on

Pool in Disrepair By Margie TIERNEY

REGULAR users of the Tea Gardens community swimming pool are far from happy. It’s a culmination of factors. There’s been no solar heating since the system broke down last year, the black racing lines are barely visible and there’s a general lack of maintenance and disrepair. “We had to get a scouring pad to clean the steps leading out of the pool, it was putrid,” said Rhonda Bobako from the Myall Masters swimming group. Jan Peeters told News Of The Area, “There is a group of 35 ladies who use the pool every day at 7am.” “Our community is predominantly over 60 which brings wisdom, a sense of humour and also bad backs, knee replacements, hip replacements, arthritis and stiff joints to name just a few ailments, all of which are assisted and improved by swimming, water aerobics or just walking in the water,” Jan said. “There’s now 95 days of the swimming year when the water is just too cold.

In response, Dan Aldridge, MidCoast Council’s Manager for Community Spaces, said, “The Solar heat system has been decommissioned as it has reached the end of its working life.” “We have monitored the water temperature of the pool every day in January, with the pool temperature maintained

She was also one of the founding members of the old weaving group, regularly assisted in the school canteen and served on the Bulahdelah Bypass committee to name just a few. Chamber President John Sahyoun said Mrs Brown has certainly made a significant contribution to the town. “Val is extremely hardworking, reliable and has been a tireless volunteer,” he said. “We have valued her dedication and commitment to the Chamber and to the community.” Mr Sahyoun said volunteers are an essential part of all small towns and make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people each and every day. “Like Val, they don’t do it for the accolades, they do it for their town and for their community,” he said. Mrs Brown will be sadly leaving the area as she is making the move north to Gladstone be closer to her family.

lines, Mr Aldridge blamed a budget shortfall. “Unfortunately, Council didn’t have a budget for pool painting last year, and with a quote of $50,000 to drain the pool, strip back the surface and apply three to four coats of paint, this is a long term solution.” Sources have told News Of The Area that MidCoast Council is considering building a new pool in the vicinity of the Coles precinct within the next five years but there’s nothing in writing. “I’d like to challenge Administrator John Turner and his directors to come down and see for themselves the extent of the work which needs to be done to the pool,” Rhonda said. ‘’The Council promotes a healthy lifestyle, but the pool is just disintegrating into disrepair.’’

ST JOSEPH’S Primary School in Bulahdelah is running their Early Starters programme again this year. Principal Mrs Joanne Trotter said the free program includes a whole school day experience for children who might be starting Kindergarten in 2018. “The program began last year with children from all around the district attending ‘big school’ every Friday,” she said. “The program is not restricted to children who might attend the school, but is open to all children in the local area.” Mrs Trotter said the children who came as ‘Early Birds’ in 2016 were very settled when they started Kindergarten this year. “We have received emails from very happy parents who have said that their children are very happy and settled in their new school environment,” she said.

“The program is very flexible with some children coming on board in term two, three or four. They are not required to attend every week as every child is an individual, with individual needs catered for.” Mrs Trotter told News Of The Area the parents of the 2016 Early Starters were given a report at the end of last year which made for a smooth transition into ‘big school’. “Parents felt confident about how their child was travelling and if they were ready for that whole educational experience,” she said. If you would like your child to take part in this year’s Early Starters programme, please contact St Joseph’s Primary School on 49974189. “We would be only too happy to answer any queries or concerns that you may have,” Mrs Trotter said.

Many boaties and river enthusiasts believe it’s crunch time when it comes to the need for dredging the Myall in the mooring area known as “The Gut” which hugs the Tea Gardens foreshore. But while there’s a desperate need, there’s no money forthcoming from the NSW Government. Once again it comes down to a battle between MidCoast Council and Crown Lands. Here’s a little history. “The Gut” was last dredged way back in 1961. For many decades it was a safe haven for large boats, but now these vessels can only be accessed in the top quarter of the full tide. Requests for dredging the channel began over three years ago. Submissions were made to the then Great Lakes Council, which conducted all the necessary studies required by the State Government. Fast forward and the now MidCoast Council requested NSW Government funding of around $200,000. The reason, mooring fees are paid to Crown Lands and Maritime Services. Last week Gordon Grainger from the Myall River Action Group was told there would be no monies forthcoming from Crown Lands and that the

responsibility for dredging “The Gut” and the cost, rested firmly on the shoulders of MidCoast Council. The Government Agency justified its decision by saying that the Myall River is considered a local waterway. “The response from Crown Lands is nothing short of immoral and a complete

disregard for this and other similar communities along the NSW coast,” Gordon Grainger told News Of The Area. “What chance do these boat owners have of regaining use of their vessels, despite loyally paying their annual mooring fees,” Mr Grainger said. “The possibility of serious damage increases as the depth lessens.’’

Books left out in cold By John SAHYOUN MIDCOAST Council representatives recently met with members of the community to discuss the future of Bulahdelah Library. Library Services Manager Chris Jones indicated that council would be closing the library, which is staffed

mainly by community volunteers. “Borrowing rates from Bulahdelah are the lowest in the MidCoast area,” Mr Jones said. “We need to find an alternative, we cannot see a future in a low use facility.” Mr Jones said he hoped that at least some library

services, which could include a drop off point for books, would be retained. MidCoast Community Liaison Officer Tracey Farrant led a discussion to identify issues the loss of the library service would create. Fairness, accessibility, the need for better promotion of services and the need

for whole community consultation were some of the concerns raised. Some community members also indicated they had restricted licenses and could not drive to other libraries in the region. Long time library volunteer Mrs Dianne Burns said the facility is utilised by people of all ages. “The loss of the service

No De-Merger for MidCoast By Margie TIERNEY MIDCOAST Council will remain as is, following a decision by the NSW Government to keep already merged councils in place.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian ended weeks of speculation on Valentine’s Day in regards to the merger between Great Lakes, Greater Taree and Gloucester Councils. “Residents and

ratepayers would be worse off if this was undone,” Premier Berejiklian said. “New councils across NSW have been working hard to deliver better services for their communities.” The Premier’s view was

Limited Ferry Service times OPINION Dear News Of The Area, WE catch the ferry across to Tea Gardens at least once every time we come up.

This time, we were with another couple, so four people would have come across for the day, had lunch in Tea Gardens and probably bought something in Hawks Nest. However, not if we have to leave at 2.30pm.

Driving the 160km round trip is a bit of an effort (plus we can’t drink), especially when the ferry ride is part of the experience. I remember there being two operators for many years. Now there is one. Maybe the current set

echoed by MidCoast Council Administrator John Turner who said, “I didn’t ever think there was going to be a de-merger.” “I invite those people who have been against the merger to accept that it has occurred and see that it might actually be working.” up is costing businesses on the north side of the Bay money. They need to be aware of this and ensure the ferry operator is aware too. Dr Matthew Hardman

My son has just started high school and I’m finding all the homework overwhelming. Any suggestions? Mrs RM, Bundabah IF only high school was like Fame or School of Rock. There’d be no bars on windows and no economics teachers in high-waisted shorts obsessed with stagflation theories. Just waif-like figures named Coco pirouetting down hallways and quirky types playing keyboards, all to beguiling tune of Stevie Nicks’ Edge of Seventeen. Just like the white winged dove sings a song sounds like she’s singin’, ooh, baby, ooh, ooh . . . Okay, Mrs RM, I had a little moment then, but I’m back. Sweaty, but back. High school is overwhelming. Oh, the flashbacks of Mandy Brutus and her jujitsu holds in the playground. The after-school detentions. Hiding in the toilet during swimming carnivals. It’s survival of the fittest out there. And then there’s the burden of homework. Your homework, by the sound of it. Don’t be too disappointed with your results, Mrs RM. A ‘B’ for Prudence’s English assignment is no measure of your true ability. Keep striving along with all the other hapless parents out there until Australia finally catches up with the educators in Finland. They know that homework is nothing but payback from exhausted teachers and a testing system that they refer to, in hushed tones, as Napalm, not Naplan. Now go and make that mobile using this week’s spelling list, five toilet rolls, yellow cellophane and handknitted coat hangers. Due tomorrow. Carpe Diem, Jasminda.

Jackpot Winners Tea Garden’s Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 15 February At last some beautiful summer weather to enjoy the great game of Lawn Bowls. A maximum field of 54 players took advantage of the conditions and came out ready to play. The popular formula of 20 points for the win and 1 for each end won saw four teams vying for the prize money. On a four-way countback the winners were Peter Gurney, Ken Devlin, Col Amos and Mark Hair. The runners-up also on a countback, were Geoff Hamilton, a visitor from Turramurra, Garry Porter, Col Saillard and Ross Barry.

17 February Conditions for bowls were great today; if not a tad warm, when 22 bowlers contested the Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs. There were four games

of Pairs and one game of Triples played. It was nice to see some support from our lady bowlers, always welcome! The winners today with the highest winning margin were Ross Barry and Greg Pearson. They were closely followed by the triples combination of Gary Wynne, Vic Garlick and Danny Johnson. The Jackpot was not won and will stand at $100 when play resumes next Friday.

18 February The first round of the Club Minor Singles Championship was played today and it was pleasing to see some new bowlers competing, many playing their first ever singles match. The results were Bill Heylbut defeated Denis Wilberforce 31-12. David Garcia defeated Steve Jones 31-22. Peter Gurney was too consistent for Lon Richards winning 31-7. Anthony Grant had a tough match with Vic Garlick

winning 31-27. Graeme Watkins had a great win over the valiant Gary Wynne 31-26. Ken Devlin accounted for Doug Andrews 31-21. A second round match was also played with Luke Gliwa having a battle to defeat Col Saillard 31-26.

19 February Sunday bowlers had a roll-up today with many regular players being absent. The second round of the Club Minor Singles Championship was played in very overcast and threatening conditions. Bill Haylbut continued on his winning way defeating David Garcia 31-24. Peter Gurney, displaying some deft touch, accounted for Anthony Grant 31-11. Ken Devlin was in fine form defeating Graeme Watkins 31-15. Max Stephens had too many shots winning comfortably against Ray Prigg 31-9. Ross Barry had a tough fight early in the game eventually winning 31-19 against a stoic Garry Porter 31-19. Doug Naylor is through

Club Championship Major Singles Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS ON Tuesday 14 February the final of the Club Championship Major Singles Competition was played. This has been a thrilling event both for the spectators and the competitors. The finalists, Maynie Roberts versus Robyn Beaumont, are two very talented bowlers. Maynie attempting to win her tenth title for this particular competition. At the finish of the second end the score was equal.

By the 7th end Maynie had a lead of six shots but Robyn delivered some great bowls narrowing Maynie’s lead to just two shots by the start of the 10th end. The final score at the 21st end, Maynie 25 v Robyn 14 does not describe the calibre of bowling. Congratulations to Maynie on your win. As always thanks to all the “behind the scene” crew who organise these events, also to the Umpires, Controlling Body, the Markers and last but not least the Social Committee who once again provided some delicious sandwiches for lunch.

Ready to Rumble GOLF Karuah RSL Men’s Bowls Club By Trevor DAVIES Preparation Despite the Heat at Karuah

DESPITE losing a day’s bowling to the heat, the club’s preparation for the coming Pennant Season continues at Karuah RSL Bowling Club. The Club made a courageous decision last week, in the interest of Health and Safety, to cancel play for a day due to the heat. Although not universally popular, the condition of the bowlers and the potential of harm won out on the day. Congratulations to club management for exercising their duty of care so well. Two inter-club visits have been held since my last report, with the club hosting a contingent from Forster and heading to East Maitland. Although it were two overall losses to Karuah, the competition was strong, the company was excellent, and skills improved all round. The term early to ripen, early to spoil has been used and we hope to ripen just as the pennant season starts! The Ladies RSL Bowls Club are playing in the district fours competition at

Having had a busy afternoon of visiting wineries and tasting their wine, she stopped in (driven by her husband, who in the interest of road safety was abstaining) at her last planned stop of the afternoon. FINGAL BAY: Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Boat Crew.

By Margie TIERNEY BOAT crews from Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club had a terrific weekend at the recent Newcastle Branch Surf Life Saving Titles at Fingal Beach. This was the first medal carnival for the season against all Newcastle branch surf clubs from as far south as Swansea Belmont and Caves Beach. In all, 13 clubs took part. After a consistent showing in the Streets Surfboat series since last November there was underlying optimism for a successful carnival. Peter Rogers told News Of The Area, “Tea Gardens/

Hawks Nest was expecting to be competitive but their results from the branch championships were exceptional and a credit to all involved.” “Four crews competed and returned home with three gold medals and a one silver, the best result of any surf lifesaving club in the Hunter branch in surfboats,” Peter said. “Both Masters Men’s crews and the Masters Ladies’ crew won gold in their age divisions while the male open boat crew won silver after a small mishap on the turning buoy which cost them a gold medal as well.” ‘’With the NSW State SLSA

Tiarna Chester, Harrison Skelly-Osmond, Sophie Howarth, Ella Howarth, Isaac Stokes and Bethany Stokes took part. Tiarna Chester was the only Nipper who had competed at a carnival before. All Nippers competed in the Beach Sprint, Beach

THE weekend weather was far cooler than the few previous fishing outings held this season. The midday fishing session was enjoyable and lacking any scorching heat. The amount of club members and guests joining in for the social club fishing outing increased due to the comfortable temperatures for the anglers to participate in their chosen hobbies. The weekend angling champion and men’s division angling champion was Darby Neville catching a great haul of bream, tailor, whiting and snapper . The men’s division runner up angler was Trevor Peirson who caught some great bream and whiting . The ladies weekend angling champion was Gail Bartlett , catching a swag of bream, flathead and

Students make a splash By Daniel SAHYOUN

THE hot weather didn’t deter enthusiasm or competitive spirit at Karuah Public School’s Annual Swimming Carnival recently held at Tea Gardens pool. As the races got underway, the students from Years 2 to 6 constantly cheered for their houses and supported the competitors who gave it their all. Sports Co-ordinator Mrs Kath Henry said the newly elected sports captains and vice-captains did an exceptional job, by leading the cheers and encouraging and organising the children for their events. “The students participated with enthusiasm and dedication for their sporting houses,” Mrs Henry said. “Teachers were delighted with student behaviour and the huge amount of effort put into races.” The three houses,

Kingfisher, Pelican and Swift, battled it out in numerous events with the full program keeping the students and staff busy throughout the day. There were also plenty of free swims which gave the students time to cool off and have fun in the water with their friends. Mrs Henry said the carnival was a huge success due to the participation of the students and the efforts of many parents and staff. “Thank you to all staff members, parents and carers who attended and assisted at the carnival, your efforts are always appreciated,” she said. “Thanks also to Mrs Kelly Pietsch who was our life guard, and to Leon from the Masters Swim Club for setting up on the day.” The house trophy, medallions and ribbons will be presented at an upcoming school assembly.
