Show Ball fund raise BULAHDELAH Bowling Club was transformed into a magical ballroom for the Show Society’s formal Cocktail and Dinner Dance recently. The extravagant social event was a chance for Show Committee members and the community to enjoy a fun night out together away from the demands of organisation for the show. With the cocktails flowing, guests enjoyed an evening of fine dining, mingling and laughter in the intricately decorated auditorium. A fundraising auction was one of the many highlights of the evening creating a buzz of excitement with fierce bidding on items donated by local businesses. The competitive, lively auction accompanied by screams and cheers provided
great entertainment with the generous bids bringing in big bucks for the Show Society. Rock band Shivoo pumped out the best of the 80’s throughout the evening ensuring the dance floor was rocking well into the night. The Show Ball was traditionally held in November, just prior to the annual show. Bulahdelah Show Society President Garry Gooch said the committee decided to hold the Ball mid-year away from the busy lead up to the show. “It is a good opportunity for the volunteers and people who work during the Show to come together and enjoy a relaxed social evening,” Mr Gooch said. “The event helps to raise an awareness of the hard work put in by the members of the Show

Seam Gas as it’s impacting on our area negatively and it will be good to be in a position where I can influence the outcome.” To assist in making the big decision on who gets her vote, McKelty said she has researched what each of the Candidates for the seat of Lyne represent. “Each of the candidates have different priorities and backgrounds and all are focusing their attention on different National issues,” she said. “I’ve read up on what the candidates are offering and I’ll be voting for the one that best addresses the issues that I think are important.” McKelty said she has also researched the policies of the major Political Parties to assist with making a choice for the Senate. For first time voters, the process of casting their ballot can be overwhelming. From running the gauntlet of party supporters handing how-tovote cards to worry about filling out the ballot paper correctly, a small amount of preparation can assist young voters. McKelty said she has been practicing voting on the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) website to make sure her vote counts. “I want to make sure I know exactly what I need to do when I finally go to vote.” Practice voting on both the House of Representatives and the Senate can be done on the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au

Recent heavy hits the Oysters By Dave BRAZIER
IN January this year Myall Coast News Of The Area reported on the dire situation faced by many aquaculture reliant businesses who were forced to shut shop due to the heavy rains experienced just after New
Years. Cole Brothers Oysters were just one of a handful of suppliers based on the Karuah River who were dealt a cruel blow by Mother Nature at their peak time of the year. The low weather trough experienced in the area earlier this month has again forced businesses like Cole Brothers, to shut shop until water quality and conditions improve to meet industry standards so they can harvest again. On the Cole Brothers Facebook page, regular customers were advised on 10 June, “Due to excessive rainfall over the last
week we are unable to harvest oysters for sale in Port Stephens. Sorry but our shop will be closed from today (Friday the 10th June) for possibly the next 10 days until the salt returns to the estuary.” News Of The Area called into the facility beside the Karuah River and found an eerily quiet site. Expecting to see some maintenance operations in action I couldn’t help but feel quite saddened to see a really odd spectacle, nothing was happening at all. All doors and facilities locked. I checked on other oyster farmers
and the same lack of works was found. It really drums into ones head how important the river systems ecology is to so many people. From businesses, to fishing or boating clubs, for tourists to enjoy. For everybody. Mother Nature has, as previously stated, brought this new blow to the many businesses that the region cannot do without. It is everyone’s responsibility also to assist these businesses by being extra vigilant when using the normally pristine waters in the area that so many rely on.

THERE is an extra news stand in the main street of Bulahdelah for the Myall Coast News Of The Area. The Bulahdelah IGA has had a
news stand for the distribution of the paper for the last two years. After receiving many calls and letters of request over a
period of a few months, it’s clear that the residents of Bulahdelah and surrounding area, want a news stand on the other side of the road.
Well, thanks to Louise at Barry Bros Butchers, the News Of The Area can be collected from their shop.

Pindimar Landmark execute Repairs By Dave BRAZIER

FORMATION: Rocks ready to be positioned to help tree at South Pindimar
Ambulance assault TWO ambulance officers have been assaulted by a patient leaving one with a serious ankle injury and the other being spat on by the offender. A 31-year-old Tea Gardens male is to be charged with assault upon an ambulance officer and numerous other offences in relation to the incident. At the time of the assault, ambulance officers were conveying the male to hospital when he became violent and wrestled with the officers inside the ambulance. Tea Gardens Police were called for urgent assistance and met the ambulance on Myall Street near the Industrial Area at about 4pm on Saturday 18 June. On arrival, Police were able to handcuff the male who continued to wrestle violently inside the ambulance. Police report, “During the incident the male spat a large amount of fluid on one ambulance officer and again spat throughout the ambulance itself.”
The male was eventually secured before being conveyed to the Mater Hospital. In addition to the assault charges, the male will also be charged with malicious damage to the ambulance itself including the $18,000 electric stretcher and resist police. NSW Ambulance Chief Executive Commissioner Dominic Morgan said NSW Ambulance has a zero tolerance policy to any form of violence towards their staff. “It is appalling that any person would attack a paramedic when their sole intention is to provide emergency medical aid,” Commissioner Morgan said. “Any abuse or intimidation of our on-duty paramedics – be it verbal or physical – is completely unacceptable.” Commissioner Morgan said NSW Ambulance works closely with Police to ensure that offenders are pursued to the full extent of the law.
Meet Commander and Police team
AN invitation is extended to all members of the community to meet with Port Stephens Police Commander Mr Craner and his Senior Management Team. The meeting will take place in Tea Gardens on Tuesday 12 July with the purpose of discussing local Policing and crime issues with the community.
Participants will have the opportunity to raise and discuss any issues of concern to them with the Senior Police Management Team. The meeting will take place at 11.00am on Tuesday 12 July at the Masonic Centre in Tea Gardens.
PINDIMAR. There’s not much there really, and that’s how those who live and visit there seem to like it. But what they do have they are passionate about, and apart from the ‘Totum Pole’ there is one thing the community takes pride in looking at and enjoying, it’s looking at and sitting under the huge Pine Tree at the boat ramp in South Pindimar. Overlooking Nelson Bay and the heads, it’s a top spot to stop, think, relax, be
inspired and laugh. Unfortunately though over the years the weather conditions haven’t been the foreshores friend resulting in a mass of erosion around the surrounding base and seats that brings joy to so many. Erosion has reached a point where quick action is required, and Mid Coast Council have started the process dropping off a number of large rocks to be circulated around the base of the point under the tree and seating area. Speaking with News
Of The Area, Mid Coast Council's Manager of Parks and Recreation, Mr Andrew Staniland confirmed that the works are being undertaken to protect the pine tree. Mr Staniland said, "Rock revetment will be placed around the tree and existing retainment wall.” “These works have been planned for a while, and we've been able to begin now we have won rock from another job.” “The tree has long been an important navigational aid," he said.

Bromhead Connects Young Leaders over Breakfast
By Daniel SAHYOUN
MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead hosted a breakfast in Taree for School Leaders in the Myall Lakes Electorate last week. Bulahdelah Central School Captains joined students from twelve High Schools in the Electorate to discuss their goals as they move towards higher education and future employment. Bulahdelah Captain Jayden Lilley said it was interesting to hear how Mr Bromhead had become a politician. “He told us about all the
different career paths he has had throughout his life,” Jayden said. “Listening to him was inspiring as he spoke not just about his past, but also how he continues to support members of the communities that he represents.” Jayden said the breakfast was a great chance to meet other school captains who were also in the same position of planning for their futures. The breakfast was attended by fifty students and teachers. Mr Bromhead said it proved to be a great opportunity for the student leaders to
network with their peers. “The breakfast is the ideal forum to enable the students to communicate with each other,” he said. “I spoke to the group regarding my role in the community and encouraged those present to consider making a contribution to their community by becoming involved as leaders in their local service organisations executive committees.” Mr Bromhead answered many questions posed by the students relating to his career and his future plans.

Community Partnership Grants: Applications are open By Dave BRAZIER
MEMBER for Port Stephens Kate Washington is encouraging local community groups to apply for the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Grant. In 2015 there were 12 successful groups in Port Stephens who received a combined total of approximately $300,000. This includes Anna Bay Public School who used their $25,620 grant to complete the schools infants playground, which was recently opened by Kate Washington. Other 2015 recipients were Port Stephens Women's Crisis
& Support Group Inc, Hawks Next Bridge Club, Karuah Public School P&C, Medowie Football Club and Fingal Bay Surf Life Saving Club. Speaking with News Of The Area, Ms Washington said, “I have recently met with a number of the 2015 recipients and inspected the new equipment and facilities this grant has funded. It is fantastic to see local groups successfully applying for funding and seeing their efforts come to fruition.” “I encourage all local groups who think they are eligible to apply for this grant funding.” “This grant program is an excellent opportunity for local
Keep waste out of landfill MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead welcomed Mid Coast Councils successful application for a $340,000 NSW Government grant to help keep food and garden waste out of landfill. This Environmental Trust grant is part of the NSW Government’s Organics Infrastructure Large and Small grant program, funded under the government’s $465.7 million Waste Less Recycle More initiative. Mr Bromhead said the project funding will be used to construct and operate an aerated static pile composting facility based on the Mobile Aerated Floor system at it’s Buckets Way Waste Management Centre. Council’s existing kerbside organics collection service will be expanded to include food waste. Additional organic inputs will be sought from the commercial sector. It is anticipated that up to 12,000 tonnes per annum of organic material will be composted and sold to a variety of customers, including landscape suppliers, farmers, horticulturist as well as council for use in its parks, playing
fields and nature strips. “Finding new ways to reuse and recycle food and garden waste is an important part of the NSW Government’s waste strategy and an integral component of our strategy for diverting our overall rates of waste into landfill,” Mr Bromhead said. This project is one of 24 projects to share in more than $13 million of round 3 grant funding. “Almost half of the waste in household red-lid bins that goes to landfill in NSW is food and garden waste that could instead be processed into compost or, in the case of good quality surplus food, be redistributed to people in need,” Environment Minister Mark Speakman said. The government has committed $43 million over five years to improving organics infrastructure as part of the Waste Less Recycle More initiative. This initiative also includes funding for business recycling, market development, managing problem wastes, new waste infrastructure, local councils and programs to tackle illegal dumping and litter.
groups to fund much needed upgrades and repairs,” she said. Applications for the 2016 Community Building Partnership Grant opened 13 June and close 5pm 22 July 2016. To be eligible to apply a group must be incorporated & notfor-profit, apply for funding for capital works (infrastructure) or for equipment that will last 5+ years, apply for a minimum of $2,500. q SUMMARY: Over a 30 minute period, News Of The Area noted that 8 out of 10 East bound vehicles activated the Koala ‘Slow Down’ sign.
Cars are not slowing By Dave BRAZIER
OF all the iconic native creatures we are so fortunate to have in the Myall Coast area, Koalas are especially important to the area but are susceptible to injuries and death by wild dogs and interactions with vehicular movements. With the recent commissioning and activation of the Koala Speed Sign at the Eastern end of Singing Bridge at Tea Gardens, members of The Myall Koala &
Environmental Group have been left perplexed at recent findings of speed data recorded at the site. Secretary of the Group, Ian Morphett, has spoken about some alarming trends with data taken at the site. Mr Morphett said, “The Koala Group has just received the first statistics from the speed sensing sign on the Singing Bridge.” “I'd love to know who the idiot was who clocked speeds between 100kph and 121kph five times, at night on the 13th, 14th and
15th of May.” Mr Morphett said, “There is not much chance of avoiding a koala at those speeds.” “The average speed of the 9256 vehicles who passed the sign on the first six days of recording was 60.6km/h which was a good improvement on the 64.8kph when measured last year,” he said. Despite the numerous amounts of signage and even with the electronic speed activated sign, motorists still flout the

warnings and continue to exceed the nominated limit of 50kph in the area. On Friday 17 June, News Of The Area conducted a survey of East bound vehicular traffic. OUR INVESTIGATION SHOWED: In a 30 minute period there were 213 vehicles pass over the bridge heading towards Hawks Nest. Of those, there were 171 activations of the electronic Koala Speed Sign, suggesting that 80% of road users may be exceeding the speed limit and putting Koalas in the area at risk by doing so. Speaking with News of The Area about our results, Ian Morphett said, “It’s not surprising, but we are confident people are slowly getting the message as average speed this is now lower than what was recorder before the sign was installed.” “People often ‘ask us why isn’t there also a sign on the Tea Gardens side of the bridge’? This is purely due to cost, with the current sign costing us $14,000 but we are devising a fund raising plan shortly to hopefully be able to afford the second sign in the future,” he said.

This will allow for stormwater to be transferred to the opposite side of the road where it can drain into the existing piped drainage system. Works is scheduled to commence in late June.

q CELEBRATION: Students celebrate their Yoobi.
THE look on the students faces said it all, and the build up of excitement and joy proved to be an overwhelming success when stationary supplier ‘Yoobi’ delivered some well appreciated goodies to Karuah Public School on Thursday 16 June. The motto of Yoobi is ‘One
for you, One for me’, which simply put, means that when one of their products is purchased from one of their retailers, like major Yoobi retailer Officeworks, Yoobi respond by donating one of the same to a needy school. Schools that could do with a boost are negotiated with and determined by Yoobi partner ‘The Smith Family’. Speaking with News Of
The Area, Smith Family representative Suzanne Leonard was on hand at last weeks handover and said, “It’s very special to be involved in such a program with our local schools.” “It’s with immense pride I stand here today and see the many smiles on so many childrens faces with the delivery of these items from Yoobi,” she said.
Yoobi spokesperson Kelly Neve worked the young crowd into a frenzy describing how many items each student was to receive, and that it meant quite a lot to Yoobi to see the items going to such an appreciative group of Primary School students. The first recipients of a big ‘Yoobi box of goodies’ were class 4-5, who ever

WORK to implement road safety improvements on the Pacific Highway at Nerong will begin today as a part of the Federal Coalition Government’s Black Spot Programme. Dr Gillespie said the Australian Government provided $200,000 for the project to improve safety for motorists and reduce road crashes. “In the five years to June 2013 there were 10 crashes which resulted in six injuries on the Pacific Highway from Viney Creek Road West to 540 metres north,” Dr Gillespie said. “Safety improvement work involves installing Install kerbside safety barrier
northbound from Viney Creek Road West to 500m north and southbound from Viney Creek Road East to 200 north’. “This funding is on top of the $5.64 billion investment the Federal Coalition Government is making to duplicate the Pacific Highway.” “We know that investment in road infrastructure can save lives,” said Dr Gillespie. NSW Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter & Central Coast Scot MacDonald thanked local motorists for their patience while the safety improvement work is carried out by Roads and Maritime Services.
“The new barriers aim to reduce the severity of crashes in the area by preventing motorists from veering off the road.” Work will be carried out Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm and is to take three weeks to complete, weather permitting. Ice Cream Shack once again
By Daniel SAHYOUN
TEA Gardens Ice Cream Shack has done it again, being awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for the second year running. To receive the prestigious award, a business must maintain an overall TripAdvisor rating of at least four out of five stars and have a minimum number of reviews during a 12 month period. Owners Anne and Jim Rutter said they were “pretty stocked” to receive the award.
“There was no luck involved, just hard work,” Anne said. “We’ve kept the standards maintained by the previous owner and added personality to make a feel good atmosphere.” With 45 tempting flavours of ice-cream, gelatos and sorbets on offer, a fun 60’s retro feel, and an enthusiastic staff, it’s understandable that locals and visitors ritually flock to the shop. Anne’s infectious laugh and fun-loving nature creates a welcoming vibe the moment you step inside and shows her obvious passion for her work.
Anne said, “It’s important to hang with people who make you feel good.” “We don’t come here to work, we just come here to have a fun day out,” she said. The Shack has also been recognised with many other awards for excellence including two Small Business Awards and the 5 Star Hygiene and Food Safety Award. Anne and her husband Jim brought the business six years ago with a five year plan in mind. “We feel we are peaking with
what we have to offer, and are going to retire from the business on top,” Anne said. With the Ice Cream Shack up for sale, Anne said she has no plans of slowing down and is looking forward to starting a new business venture. The overall experience at the shack has been summed up perfectly by one reviewer who stated,” Great coffee, fabulous ice cream, tasty meals! And did I mention Jim, Anne and their q AWARD: Anne Rutter from Tea Gardens Ice staff? It’s like dropping in on Cream Shack with the TripAdvisor Certificate of family or friends, without the Excellence. grumpy bits.”
High and Dry Dear News Of The Area, AN interesting scene was observed along the Tea Gardens waterfront early Thursday morning. A reasonably large vessel which looked to be needing some TLC had been driven on to the sand flats opposite
the hotel in what was a falling tide and despite the skippers' attempts to pull it free using a small dory, was there to remain until the next high tide expected that evening. It's absence on Friday indicates it was freed on Thursday night.
Guess there are not many better fates than being marooned opposite a pub and enjoying the weather we had on Thursday Gordon Grainger Tea Gardens

YOU asked readers in your June 2nd edition (News Of The Area) what we thought of the Knitting Nannas' demonstration at Council. You have since reported online that the Nanna's have been at it again, swamping the second MCC meeting. Well I applaud them. The Nanna's that is. Frustration with Prime Minister
Dear News of the Area,
I WAS incensed when I heard that both our selfimportant Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition refused to attend the ceremony for the returning remains of our soldiers killed in the Vietnam conflict. These soldiers did their job and paid the highest price for it only to come home to a snub from those who consider themselves
the highest in the land; a total disgrace and a good indicator to the character of both these individuals. It is all well and good for the PM to want the title of “Right Honourable” and the leader of the opposition “The Honourable” but maybe it would be good if they earned these titles instead of gaining them by political convention. Another interesting fact, the 200,000 jobs Turnbull says are “expected” in 2016-2017.
Is this the same expectation as his very rubbery budget numbers? Wasn’t the Coalition opposition the ones who lambasted a Labour PM when he claimed that his government had delivered 50,000 new jobs; the same people who then stated that no government could create jobs, only the environment for others to employ more? But now, with an election looming things are different?
All these new jobs will only eventuate if we re-elect Turnbull et al, won’t they? The saddest part is that we know the politicians are lying, they know we know they are lying and they don’t care because there doesn’t seem to be any alternative. Or is there?

There are also direct health benefits, it’s much less boring swimming in open water so people find themselves swimming for much longer, burning more calories and adding muscle tone. There’s no chlorine to worry about so it’s better for your hair and skin and there are also considerable psychological
benefits. The combination of fresh air and cold water is a well-known pick-me-up. The wearing of a wetsuit provides warmth and aids buoyancy. In mid-winter the water temperature is below 18 degrees. This week’s air temp has been sitting around 10 - 12 deg and

Cricket Club gets funding boost
q UPGRADE: Bulahdelah Cricket Club Secretary Nathan Fletcher, club member Zac Fletcher and Vice-President Geoff Matheson.
By Daniel SAHYOUN BULAHDELAH Cricket Club has received a $7000 funding boost to repair damage to the cricket pitch at the Jack Ireland Sporting Complex. The funding has been made available through the NSW Government Local Sports Grants program and MidCoast
Council. The extensive damage to the cricket pitch has forced the Club to prohibit team games at the ground for the past few years. Bulahdelah Cricket Club Vice-President Geoff Matheson said the concrete surface of the damaged pitch presented a safety hazard. “We have been unable to play
in Bulahdelah as we didn’t have the proper facilities,” he said. “If we had a home game, we had to go to Pacific Palms as we had nothing, no facilities, no practice nets or anything.” Mr Matheson said the Cricket Club was extremely grateful for the funding as it will allow the Club to repair the pitch and recommence playing in Bulahdelah. “Once the repairs are done, we will have a facility for teams to play on again,” Mr Matheson said. “We’ve made enquires for quotes with contractors, and we’re hoping the new pitch will be completed by October in time for the next season.” Member for Myall
Lakes Mr Stephen Bromhead said the main aim of the Local Sport Grant program is to increase regular and ongoing participation opportunities in sport and active recreation. “Sport is a huge part of our way of life and here in Myall Lakes we are fortunate to have many diverse sporting clubs that cater for different sports and ages of the participants,” Mr Bromhead said. “The NSW Government recognises the importance of sport and is committed to delivering the best infrastructure to the people of NSW.” Mr Bromhead said he looks forward to seeing the benefits of the upgrades.

FISHING
Hawks Nest Golf Club Social Club By Luke BOYD A GREAT fishing outing, second for the new season, was held on the 10 - 12 July. The outright winning social angler for the weekend was Robert Bartlett. Robert Bartlett was also the mens weekend social fishing champion catching bream, luderick, drummer, groper, flathead and a tailor. The mens runner up angler for the social fishing weekend was Geoff Smith who caught bream, an Australian salmon, luderick and flathead. The ladies social fishing champion for the weekend was Marion Smith who caught some good bream. The ladies social fishing runner up was Gail Bartlett who caught some tailor. The mystery fish drawn was a teraglin and was not won. Great fishing.
THE last two weeks the Roos have been playing hard. Two week aog they played Windale, who travelled up the highway to Karuah for what was expected to be one of our toughest games thus far. The Roos started with a strong defensive line causing an error and #6 Jake Langdon scoring of the back of it. Roos continued their momentum through a good ball which was finished off with #4 Ryan Saunders scoring and #7 Sam Croese converting taking the score to 10/0 Roos way. The Roos showed great team work with their on line defence holding Windale out for 5 consecutive sets, forcing an error which saw #16 Darren Weatherall scope up the lose ball an run 50metres until there was no fuel left in the tank. Half time score was 10/6 with the game up for grabs. The second half saw the Roos start strong again. With the return of #17 Josh Page was an instance success with him getting a hat trick of tries. The Roos were hit with injuries with both of the starting halves having to leave the field with injuries. Mudddies play well on comp leaders UNION
Myall Coast Mudcrabs MYALL Coast Mudcrabs met with undefeated leaders in the Lower Mid North Coast

meet and was backed up by Ashley Rushby who also continues to provide direction with scoring tries, conversions and leadership, together with strong support from Dan Dorante and Chris Sando. Scrum half, Tristan Tansey, led the backs both in
attack and defence and was supported by Blake Gibson and Nathan Colver who continually worked hard throughout the match. Muddies “new keen warriors” Sonny Marks, Karl Nichol, James Bowden and Trent Page displayed keenness

and enthusiasm to shine in their first season in Rugby. Whilst the final score of 43-14 to the undefeated Forster Dolphins, this score was not indicative of the outstanding effort both in attack and defence by the Myall Coast Mudcrabs.
This performance was important in that the Muddies had to back up to play a Deferred Match from 4 June (due to inclement weather) against the Old Bar Clams at Trad Oval, Old Bar last Sunday 19 June 2016.

Myall Masters Swimming Club
By Chris LOCK
THE non-believers might think we are mad jumping out of bed at 6.45am every day to drive or ride to Jimmys Beach at picturesque Winda Woppa, Hawks Nest and plunge into a mirror surface, clear
and pristine cool waters of Port Stephens. Something the founder of the Myall Mullets, Laurie Vickery, has done for the past 8 years. Within minutes of entering the water like-minded souls some donning wetsuits and brightly

AT the competition halfway mark, “the Windale Eagles will be the team to beat in 2016.” Facing an undefeated side after 9 rounds the Tea Gardens Hawks took some positives out of Windale’s 30 point to 16 win. Playing with a limited bench of three, the side lifted to put pressure on a confident Eagles outfit. The Hawks went to a 10 point to nil lead after repelling persistant raids by Windale, and electric tries from centre pairing Jake Gerahty and Brendon Muxlow. The Eagles hit back to take the lead, after a series of unforced errors saw the Hawks having to again defend their line for several sets. Down 12-10 at half time, Brooke Roach emphasized that “as a team, we are building. Take positives out of our online defence, and our structure in
attack. Windale’s tries came from midfield broken play from our lapses in concentration”. In the second half, the Hawks continued to attack theWindale line, without a result. The Eagles scored two more tries, from broken play. At 24-10 the Hawks had the chance to hit back when Brooke Roach powered over the line through four tacklers, only to have the short pass, in traffic from Nick Clarke ruled forward by a linesman. Windale crossed again, before Brendon Muxlow scored his second try. Billy Greentree kicked two goals from three attempts. Best for the Hawks was Nathan Ruse who played all but 5 minutes of the second half with a pinched nerve. He was voted the referees best and fairest in the Maty Taylor Harness Racing jersey 17.
