IMAGINE life without a birth certificate. That is the reality for an estimated 300,000 Australians who have not had their births registered and the half a million who don’t have a birth certificate. To help remedy the problem, the not-for-profit organisation Pathfinders is conducting a campaign called the National Aboriginal Birth Certificate Program. Using a grant from the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Pathfinders recently held a registration day in Karuah with a great turnout of mothers and families. “Without a birth certificate, everything is harder,” Program Coordinator Hilton Naden told News Of The Area. “Enrolling in school, getting a

When a person dies leaving a Will, the assets of their estate are dealt with according to the terms of the Will. It is however important to be aware that the assets of the estate are only the assets held by the testator in his/her sole name. Joint assets and superannuation do not form part of the estate and will not pass according to the terms of a testator’s Will. It is therefore extremely important that at the time a Will is made, proper consideration is given to the assets of a person and appropriate strategies are put in place in an attempt to ensure that assets pass to persons intended.

It is also the case that people sometimes attempt to bequest assets under the terms of the Will which are not in fact held in their name. For example where assets are held by a company, those assets cannot pass under the terms of a testator’s Will, notwithstanding the testator may be the sole director and shareholder of the company. It will be the share in the company which passes under the terms of the Will, not the assets of the company.

It is important to obtain proper estate planning advice in order to ensure that, upon death, assets pass to those people who are intended.

It’s In the Bag for Christmas

By Margie TIERNEY

TEA GARDENS Mother of two Jodie Genner has described her latest charitable venture as, “I just saw it online and I thought, I can do that.” What she saw is the “It’s In The Bag” website, a not-for-profit initiative aimed at providing a little gift of luxury to women experiencing hardship this Christmas. From now until Thursday 1 December, Jodie is calling on generous-minded people to donate a handbag filled with essentials or a little bit of luxury that will make a woman feel loved. “A lady on Facebook was selling all of these handbags and I said I’d buy them and instead she just came in and donated the lot,” Jodie told News Of The Area. The bags don’t have to be new, but they do need to be in good condition and they can be filled with items such as the necessities, like deodorant, shampoo and

Secretary Bernadette Newton said this honour was given to recognise Glen’s contribution to the show over many years. “Glen originally worked aside his late father Royce with the organisation of the camp draft competition,” she said. “Royce was also a life member and we wanted to acknowledge Glen for his hard work in ensuring this major part of the show continued.” Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie officially opened the event and said Agricultural Shows are an

important part of country life. “They showcase country Australia by showing the production that goes into the Agricultural Industry,” he said. “They are especially important for teaching children where their food comes from by showcasing the process from paddock to plate.” With plenty to see and do, kids got hands-on in the animal farm and snakes, hermit crabs and teddy bears were paraded in the Pet Show. Organisers were also pleased with the large crowds that gathered for the popular Rodeo and Demolition Derby events. Show Society President Gary Gooch told News Of The Area it was a successful weekend with many

highlights. “We’ve been favoured by good weather, we couldn’t have asked for anything better,” he said. “It’s been a year of many firsts, we’ve had a live radio broadcast, mower Mulisha and a Ferris Wheel in Sideshow Alley.” Mr Gooch said the Ferris Wheel at the show was used in the film ‘Tomorrow, When the War Began.’ Another highlight was the fierce bidding in the ‘Men’s Chocolate Cake Auction’ which raised over $1900 for Bulahdelah Hospital Auxiliary. Almost 700 cattle, thousands of pavilion and competition entries and 150 volunteers ensured this year’s show was an absolute cracker.

Teen speaks in Parliament University awaits after By Daniel SAHYOUN

BULAHDELAH Central School Year 12 student Darcy Harris recently attended the NSW Schools Constitutional Convention held at Parliament House in Sydney. The topic for the convention was Referendums and Plebiscites with the program consisting of a keynote speaker, discussions and debates facilitated by Parliamentary Officers. Darcy said it was a great experience exploring constitutional issues with 100 like-minded youth from all over NSW. “It was very interesting

to learn about our past Referendums and Plebiscites, particularly the 1981 Tasmanian Power Referendum affecting the Gordon River and the Communist Referendum in 1969,” he said. “The highlight of the program was definitely listening to so many genuine and interested young people passionate about our political system and the welfare of the country.” There have been 44 referendums in Australia since Federation and only eight of those have been carried. As part of the selection process for the convention, students were required to

write an essay explaining the impact of the referendums on Australian society. Darcy told News Of The Area he had confidence in the next generation of Australian political leaders. “I learnt so much about our political system and it was refreshing to see so many inspired young people,” he said. With an interest in Human Rights and environmental issues, Darcy is hoping his passions will lead to a political career. Darcy was the only student delegate from the Myall Lakes Electorate and met with Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead during the Convention.

early reward By Daniel SAHYOUN

AS thousands of students across the state anxiously await their HSC results, a group of Myall Coast teens have already secured their futures after receiving early University offers last week. Emily Kirkpatrick from Tea Gardens said she was very excited to have received offers from two Universities. “I got early entry into Southern Cross and the University of New England to do a Bachelor of Nursing,” she said. “Having a guaranteed

place means that a lot of the pressure has been taken off, I don’t have to stress waiting for Uni offers to come out.” Emily said she will decide where to study after the main round of offers are made early next year as she is also hoping to secure a place at the University of Newcastle. Jordan Schmidt from Pindimar told News Of The Area being offered the chance to study Social Work at the University of New England was a weight off her shoulders. “I’m so excited to get early entry and I’m really looking forward to studying the

course,” she said. “I like the idea of helping people and would particularly like to be able to assist youth.” Jordan said she will be spending the next few months working in Tea Gardens to build up her savings. “I’m applying for scholarships and saving as much as I can to help with rent and living expenses once I move to Armidale,” she said. Several of Emily and Jordan’s classmates from Bulahdelah Central School also received early entry offers last week. The main round of University offers will be made on 18 January, 2017.

Foreshore Plans

By Margie TIERNEY

THE Tea Gardens Marine Drive Foreshore Reference Group has some exciting plans in the works. Tenders are currently being finalised to build another public wharf and a much needed shelter for ferry passengers on Marine Drive. “It’s hoped both of these projects will be installed over the coming months,” Gordon Grainger from the Reference Group told News Of The Area.

“The financing of these projects will be through the ‘Better Boating’ program,” he said. Other priority projects include the planting of five more figs along the section of waterfront from Iluka Street to the Oyster Hut and the installation of several bike racks. Maintenance programs which are currently being undertaken by MidCoast Council include the returfing of ANZAC Park and the installation of new drainage.

Other projects needing to be addressed are repairs to the rock wall near the public wharf, the upgrading of the public toilet block and repair of the foreshore pathway from Hough Street to Coupland. Tenders are also being sought by Maritime Services to remove rotting and fallen poles. The Reference Group will also be asking MidCoast Council to bring forward the building of the Myall Street all-day car park and the building of a public toilet facility near the car park/bus shelter.

From Scraps to Soil MIDWASTE and MidCoast Council are partnering to host another series of the popular ‘Scraps to Soil’ workshops in Tuncurry on 3 December. Learn how to compost and turn kitchen scraps into amazing food for your soil and garden. A registration fee of $20 applies,

and includes either a compost bin and aerator, or a worm farm and worms, that you’ll take home to create fantastic compost in your own backyard. To reserve your place, visit the Midwaste website at www. midwaste.org.au/composting

Get ready for storm season By Daniel SAHYOUN

ESSENTIAL Energy is reminding residents to prepare their properties for the storm season amid predictions of extreme weather conditions in the lead up to summer. General Manager Safety, HR and Environment David Nardi advises residents to remove debris from around their homes, clear gutters and keep trees a safe distance from powerlines to help reduce damage during storms. “The traditional storm season occurs from October through to March and often brings heavy rain, hail and strong winds,” he said. “This can cause considerable damage to buildings, trees and Essential Energy’s electricity network,” he added. Storing outdoor furniture, securing trampolines and unplugging electrical equipment connected to mains power can also help

minimise damage. Bulahdelah Volunteer Rescue Association Commander Peter Mostyn said having an emergency plan is essential. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s storm season or fire season, people need to have a safety plan in place,” he said. “It needs to include a way of escaping danger, especially if near a flood area.” Mr Mostyn told News Of The Area power outages during storm season are common. “People can be without power for some time,” he said. “They should ensure they have an emergency kit with non-perishable food, drinking water, a flashlight with spare batteries, first aid kit and a list of emergency numbers.” The 2015 Superstorm and 2014 ANZAC Day hailstorm are a reminder of the destructive impact of extreme weather conditions. Mr Mostyn said a little preparation now can mean a big difference during a storm.

A Good Drop from Tea Gardens By Margie TIERNEY

WHEN you think about Australia’s winemaking regions, the Hunter, Barossa, even Mudgee may come to mind. But think again. There are winemakers living in Tea Gardens where no grapes grow. Joe and Muriel Dalli are the creators of Hillview Estate. Their wine label says it all: ‘To be served with food and to be enjoyed by family and friends.’ The Dalli’s passion for winemaking was born when

q S TORM PREPARATION: Bulahdelah VRA members Adams Crampton and Joseph Murray clear debris and overhanging branches.

they moved from suburban Sydney in 2004 and bought 55 hectares of land at The Branch on the outskirts of Karuah. “We had fruit trees and grapevines,” Muriel told News Of The Area. “I preserved fruit and made some plum wine and I put it into the Stroud Show and won first prize.” “I actually got most of my information off the Internet and books, I didn’t go and do a winemaking course,” Muriel said. But not even a move from The Branch to Tea Gardens a few years ago could stop this innovative couple.

“We now buy our grapes from the Sydney markets,” Joe said. “They come in 20 kilo boxes.” Joe and Muriel built a cellar in their garage to store the 150 litres of red and white they make each year. “The locals reckon we make a pretty good drop.” The Dalis also grow vegetables. Muriel bakes and preserves, while Joe paints landscapes and plays the saxophone in a local band. ‘‘We have a wonderful blended family – we have six children between us.” The word retirement doesn’t belong in their vocabulary. “I don’t know how we managed to fit in work.”

that our community has to offer,” Ms Washington said. “Recently, Karuah celebrated its annual Oyster and Timber Festival.” “The festival featured the famous Karuah duck race and Port Stephens oysters and the best axemen in New South Wales competed against each other,” she added. Ms Washington said another terrific event was the Myall River Festival at Tea Gardens organised by the Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. “Amazing work was done by event coordinators Craig Foot and Gerard Wilson to bring together this exciting event,” she said.

“Congratulations also go to the Pindimar Bundabah Community Association for hosting the unique Pindimar Bundabah market.” Ms Washington also acknowledged the Riverside Multicultural Fiesta, Community Connect Day and Tastes at the Bay. “Living in Port Stephens is like a festival every day and during festival season, it only gets better,” she said in Parliament. Ms Washington thanked the many volunteers, businesses and community groups that worked hard to make these significant contributions to their communities.

MP praises festivals

PORT Stephens MP Kate Washington praised the region’s festivals in Parliament last week and acknowledged the hardworking people who made them happen.

Nurses Feast on History

News Of The Area

By Margie TIERNEY

NURSES across the Myall Coast have been asked to join forces, not to serve, but be served, at a special lunch on Friday 25 November. The get-together at Tillermans Restaurant in Tea Gardens has been organised by retired local nurses Margaret StephensonMeere and Norma Glenn. Their motive is to document the history of nursing in this area before it is lost. Happy to play host for the upcoming lunch is Tillermans owner Kerry Hodges, herself a graduate nurse. “I started nursing in 1975 at Royal North Shore,” Kerry told News Of The Area. Her career took her overseas where she met her husband Peter. Fast forward a couple of years and Kerry was still nursing part time, but also training to be a chef and running a café. “I’d be sitting on an esky in the corner in the kitchen and I’d be saying you do this and you do that and I’d be breastfeeding,” Kerry

said. Kerry and Peter have now owned Tillermans for 21 years. Its predominantly Frenchbased cuisine stems from a love of

Myall Coast residents of Bulahdelah and nearby towns no longer have to go afield or online to book their next holiday, now that Personal Travel Manager Karryn Bartlett is in town. Karryn has travelled extensively around the world and has many years’ experience booking a wide variety of itineraries. As a Masters Accredited Cruise Consultant she is also passionate about all areas of cruising. q President Loretta Simpson admiring the club’s display

Karryn recently moved to Bulahdelah from the Central Coast where she worked in a high profile Travel Agency. Karryn has the support of Travel Managers Australia, a member of IATA, AFTA, ATAS and fully insured by an audited client trust account. “We also have up-to-date travel information with exclusive deals and airfares. “ “I am excited to be able to offer the Bulahdelah and Myall Coast residents a personal and local service and keep the business in the area. “ “So please contact me if you are planning a holiday, whether it be a trip to Darwin, cruising the South Pacific or a trip of a lifetime. I would love to meet you and talk about your travel plans.”

Prior to play, Kayelene Pearson was the winner of the "spider". Results for Round 3 of the competition were as follows: Dale Winter 150 v Sandra Leisemann 140, Kayelene Pearson 150 v Francis Betar 110, Vicki Rankin 150 v Robyn Webster 110 and Maynie Roberts 150 v Pat Baker 110. BOWLING

16 November: GREAT weather greeted the 48 players competing in the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition. The recent formula adopted of 2 points for a win plus margins won seems a far more equitable way to determine the winners. The winning combination of Garry Porter, Gary Wynne and John Adam won both their matches recording tens in both for +20. The runners-up, Tom Short, Geoffrey Muggleton and Dennis Ashbridge also had two good wins to finish on +18 from Barry Drayton, Terry Munright and Ron Webster, also on +18. 18 November: A foretaste of summer greeted the 16 stalwart bowlers contesting the Friday Open Jackpot Pairs. In balmy 33 degrees the competition was hot as well. The formula of 4 points for a win plus ends won was selected for the winners. social bowls. Great bowling by all players and a good crowd of spectators present to cheer the competitors on as well as witness some tight bowling. Vicki Rankin competed against Kayelene Pearson, this was a hard fought match. Kayelene lost the lead on the 9th end and unfortunately was unable to win it back despite some great shots. The final score here was Vicki 153 and Kayelene 127. Dale Winter and Maynie Roberts were the other semi finalists. Both players held the lead at different stages but Maynie gained control of the game on the 16th and went on to win 157 to 103. Congratulations to the winners and we are all looking forward to seeing Maynie and Vicki competing against each other in the final of the competition on Tuesday 22 November. Social winners on ends were Kerry Faber, Jo Younghusband and Lynne Green.

Runners-up, on a count back, were Stewart Sturrock and Robyn Beaumont. Full marks for the players that turned up and well done to the winners! The jackpot was not won and will total $180 when Friday Open Pairs resumes. Please note that next Friday the Village People take on a President’s side for what should be a great afternoon of bowls. In other news: There was no Sunday Bowls this week. Sunday bowlers please note that the Dungog Trip for Sunday Bowls is the 4th December not 27th November, as previously advised, as the Country Club AGM is that date. I am informed that the grass green will be taken out of service at the end of the month. The entry form is now on the notice board for the Patron’s Pairs to be played on Saturday 3 December. The Club Presentation Night will be held the following Monday night commencing at 6.00 pm. There is a Versatility Day planned for 10 December. The format for this may change. Wednesday 21 December will be the last formal Men’s bowls day for the year with plenty of prawns for lunch!
