Kaitlyn said she is very grateful to have her mum in her life, “because so many people don’t.” “She’s one of kind,” Kaitlyn said. “I’m glad she’s here and will be able to share the experiences in my life with me.”

THIS year’s Daffodil Day theme is ‘For Someone I Know,’ and encourages everyone to show their support for friends and family affected by cancer. Sixteen-year old Kaitlyn Smart is supporting the Cancer Council’s fundraising campaign in recognition of her mother.

Kaitlyn’s mum Debbie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 which came as quite a shock for the Tea Gardens mother of three. She received a second blow two years later when she was diagnosed with neck cancer. Debbie has undergone intensive therapies and surgery and still travels frequently for on-going treatments. Mrs Smart told News Of The Area she would not have been able to come through her traumatic battle without the help of her family. “I had to depend on the love and support of my wonderful family and friends who went above and beyond,” she said. “Kaitlyn is such a joy and I’m looking forward to following her journey.” Every day, 350 Australians find out they have a lifethreatening cancer. The survival rate for many common cancers has increased by 30 percent in the last two

decades, but the Cancer Council said there is still a long way to go. Kaitlyn encourages everyone to get behind Daffodil Day and support the fundraising event. “It’s such an important day to help the large number of people out there who are suffering from cancer,” Kaitlyn said. “When someone is diagnosed with cancer, it not only affects them but it also has a big impact on their whole family.” Debbie’s advice to

other cancer sufferers is to, “think positively, and take one day at a time.” “My wish is for a world without cancer where everyone has the chance to live a happy and healthy life,” she said. Kaitlyn Osborne and her friends will be among the many Myall Coast residents splashing the colour yellow during Daffodil Day. Ms Osborne said she is supporting the campaign in honour of her Aunty Leanne.

“There are so many people who are diagnosed with cancer every year and most of us know someone who is suffering,” she said. “By supporting Daffodil Day we can all help make a difference.” Daffodil Day is 26 August and the Cancer Council hopes to raise $2.6 million for cancer research, support services and prevention programs. Daffodil Day pins can be purchased from various businesses throughout the region.

Enter Port Stephen MP Kate Washington into the fray. “We asked questions in Parliament, and wrote a series of letters to the NSW Transport Minister, saying this is silly, regional areas do exist and we use public transport,” Ms Washington

told News Of The Area. “The funny thing was when people tried to find the nearest Opal retailer it came up Nelson Bay,” she said. “It has taken the Department 289 days to realise that they should have given him [Hugo

Elstermann) an OPAL machine in the first place.” “Whether it is local residents wanting to top up before a trip to Sydney, or tourists wanting to top up before returning home, there is demand for this service in the area and I’m relieved that the Department has finally realised that,” said the Port Stephens MP. In its first week of operation, the Opal Card proved very popular with locals and visitors, with dozens sold at both the Tea Gardens Post Office and Hawks Nest Newsagency. Mr Turner from the Tea Gardens Post Office said, “The Machine arrived on Monday the 15 August and was up and running within 10 minutes.”

MYALL COAST

News Of The Area

A Horror story IN years gone by you didn’t have to look far to find a horror story about an aged care facility, according to Allan Wilson’s research. An example is the Elder Shelter Care Village which is the scene for the locally written comedy called, ‘Just Do the Best You Can.’ The play begins with residents showing concern about their facilities and the poor treatment that they receive by nursing staff and management. Looking at the conditions of the Village, it is obvious that accreditation standards are not being met.

Residents complain about things like meals (nutrition), health care, bullying, cost cutting and being disrespected. However the approach by management is one of conflict and only concerned with profit. The President of Myall Coast Entertainers, Allan Wilson asks the following questions, “Where will this all end? Will good win over evil, or is everyone doomed?” “Unfortunately, you will have to wait, until the show starts on 12 October at the Hawks Nest Community Hall, to find out,” Mr Wilson told News Of The Area.

MEMBERS of the Bulahdelah RSL Sub Branch acknowledged Vietnam Veterans Day with a Commemoration Service at the Cenotaph in Meade Street last week. The service was led by RSL President Peter Millen who served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and marked the 50th anniversary of the Battle of

Long Tan. The commemoration included the sounding of the Last Post and one minute silence allowing those gathered to remember the men and women who fought in Vietnam as well as those who made the ultimate sacrifice. RSL Secretary Steve Pell said the members of Bulahdelah RSL Sub Branch believe it is very

important to recognise all service men and women in all conflicts equally. “Those who fought in Vietnam and lost their lives should be remembered for the sacrifice they made to defend us,” Mr Pell said. “It is especially important that we give them the same amount of recognition that we would give to

veterans of any other conflict.” Plaques on the Cenotaph in Bulahdelah acknowledge those from the local area who made the ultimate sacrifice in all conflicts, including those who served in Vietnam. “We will remember them, Lest we forget.”

Ademption – What is it?

by Robert Lindsay The doctrine of ademption provides that a specific gift by Will fails where the property, the subject of the gift at the time of death of the testator, no longer forms part of the estate of the deceased. For example, if w Buying & Selling Properties a testator leaves his motor vehicle to his w Wills & Estate Planning son under the terms of the Will, and the w Powers of Attorney & Guardianship testator disposes of that motor vehicle w Criminal Law before his death then the gift will fail. It w Family Law & Defacto Relations follows that it is important for Wills to be reviewed regularly. For example, if a w Employment Law testator leaves the proceeds of a particular w Dispute Resolution & account with the Westpac Bank, to a Commercial Litigation specific beneficiary and if that account w Contesting Wills is closed and the money transferred to w Commercial another account with the Westpac Bank - Buying/Selling a Business before the testator dies, then the gift will - Company Transactions fail. The beneficiary will miss out. - Leasing

If however, the Will-maker expresses the Appointments Fridays 2pm-6pm terms of his Will differently to provide that the beneficiary will receive all money 191 Myall Street held by him in accounts with the Westpac Tea Gardens Bank, then the beneficiary will not miss www.mullanelindsay.com.au out if the account is closed and the money

transferred to another account (with Westpac). Of course, if the testator closes all accounts with the Westpac Bank and reinvests the proceeds of the accounts with the ANZ Bank then the beneficiary will miss out. When a Will is drafted, a competent Willmaker should adopt certain drafting techniques to protect against ademption (ie the failure of a gift under the terms of the Will). As stated above, sometimes if the gift is framed in generic terms rather than specific terms, then it is less likely to fail. Also, it is open to the testator to include an alternative gift in the event that the initial gift ceases to exist. Particular care must be taken when dealing with shares.

It is important to obtain competent advice when considering the terms of a Will to ensure that the correct beneficiaries receive their intended entitlement.

Op ‘til you Drop

By Margie TIERNEY IT’S National Op Shop Week, a time when we’re all encouraged to “Op ‘til we Drop.” The campaign is aimed at promoting our local Op Shops as places to find that special outfit, rare book, or piece of crockery or cutlery that’s not going to break the bank. Op Shop Week also encourages people to donate, whether it be financially or physically by becoming a volunteer. Diane Stillie has been volunteering at “ Vinnies” in Tea Gardens since the store first opened its doors in 2007. “It used to be a fruit shop,

but over the years we’ve expanded and now have 30 volunteers who keep the store open 5 and a half days a week,” she told the News Of The Area. Manager, Beatrix Losurdo volunteers her services at least 3 days a week. “I’ve learned so much about running a business,” she said. “Vinnies also takes on interns which helps give someone training in retail, opening up job opportunities and a future.” And if it’s a bargain you’re after, Vinnies is having a sale! From Wednesday 24 August until Friday 26 August all winter garments are half

price, with some items selling for as little as a dollar. Beatrix Losurdo said, “We have a great team of volunteers who’ve become close friends, but we’re always looking for more people to put on our books.” All money raised by Vinnies goes to providing emergency accommodation, food and the basics of life for people in crisis. The sign behind the counter of the Tea Gardens Op Shop sums it up. “Our Volunteers work for nothing, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.”

in size, from 35 to 53 cm. Males weigh about 6 kilograms, while females weigh about 4.5 kilograms. The short, stout limbs of an echidna are well-suited for scratching and digging in the soil. The front feet have five flattened claws which are used to dig forest litter, burrow, and tear open logs and termite mounds. The hind feet point backwards, and help to push soil away when the animal is burrowing. Two of the claws on each back foot are used for grooming. An echidna’s tail is short, stubby and hairless underneath. Protecting themselves: The echidna looks fearsome but it is a shy animal and would rather retreat than fight if disturbed. When frightened, it will curl

into a ball with its snout and legs tucked beneath it and its sharp spines sticking out. It will wedge itself beneath rocks, or burrow straight down into soft soil, to escape predators such as dogs, eagles and dingos. Where do they live?: Echidnas are Australia’s most widespread native mammal, being found in almost all habitats, from snow covered mountains to deserts. They are also common in urban areas, although their camouflage can make them very difficult to see. Echidnas are usually found among rocks, in hollow logs and in holes among tree roots. During rainy or windy weather they often burrow into the soil or shelter under bushes and tussocks of grass.

WHAT do they look like?: Echidnas vary in colour depending on their location. In the northern, hotter regions of Australia, echidnas are light brown, but they become darker with thicker hair further south. In Tasmania, they are black. All echidnas have sharp spines covering the back of their short, stocky bodies. The echidna’s snout is between 7 and 8 cm long, and is stiffened to enable it to break up logs and termite mounds when searching for food. An echidna’s mouth is on the underside of its snout, at the end. This allows the animal to feed easily - especially when suckling. Adult echidnas vary

What do they eat?: With a keen sense of smell, an echidna uses its long, hairless snout to search for food, detect danger and locate other echidnas. Termites are the preferred food, which is why the animal is often called the ‘spiny anteater’. After finding food, an echidna catches the prey with its long, sticky tongue. Because it has no teeth, it grinds its food between its tongue and the bottom of its mouth. Breeding and life cycle: Together with the platypus, echidnas are the world’s only monotremes, or egg-laying mammals. Their breeding season occurs between July and August.

After mating the male and female go their separate ways. Four weeks later the female lays a single egg into a simple pouch on her abdomen. The egg takes about 10 days to hatch, producing a young animal which measures around 1.45 cm (about the size of a jellybean) and weighs as little as 380 milligrams. The young echidna is carried around in its mother’s pouch for about three months until its spines have started to develop. It still stays close to its mother and continues to suckle milk through specialised pores in the skin inside mum’s pouch. Although they begin to

eat termites and ants soon after leaving the pouch, young echidnas are often not fully weaned until they are up to seven months old. Echidnas have been known to live for as long as 16 years in the wild, but generally their life span is thought to be under 10 years. Handling: Don’t attempt to pick an echidna up as you may injure it (or yourself). Never put an echidna into the back of your car or on your car seat, as its ability to hold on and burrow may tear or damage mats or upholstery. Most of this information about echidnas came from the NSW Government Office of Environment & Heritage website. If you find an injured or displaced echidna, contact one of the local wildlife rescue groups such as Hunter Wildlife (0418NATIVE) or Wildlife in Need of Care (1300WINCWL). Remembrance Service very special

Karuah Memorial Service, Photo Jack Drake

q

By Margie TIERNEY THEY gathered at Karuah under a bright blue sky and a backdrop of slow moving flags, to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam Battle of Long Tan. It was a morning which made all the sacrifices of a conflict long past, well worth the fight. With local school children looking on, a new commemorative wall was dedicated by Minister Gary

Parker and members of the Karuah RSL Sub Branch. Wreaths were also laid by the Tea Gardens RSL Sub Branch, Matraville RSL Sub Branch, Karuah RSL and local Primary School. 72 year old veteran Alek Miller recalled his years spent as a young corporal in the Royal Australian Airforce, serving with the 36th and 37th Squadron “The Hercs,” as he called them. He told the News Of The Area how he made 36 trips

from Australia to Vietnam carrying supplies and logistics from Richmond and Darwin. “Unfortunately, we had 8 coffins on board one return trip,” Alek said. He also lost a brother in the conflict. But like so many veterans Alek Miller stressed, “What happened in Vietnam, stayed in Vietnam.” He went on to serve his country in the RAAF for another 25 years. The Battle of Long tan,

on August 18, 1966, claimed the lives of 18 Australian servicemen and left 24 others wounded. It was the most costly single battle of the Vietnam conflict. The Karuah Memorial Wall of Remembrance allows room for the names of veterans from Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and peacekeepers from East Timor. The wall itself is dedicated to the memory of Snowy (Bill) Williams 2/9th Cavalry

MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead is pleased to be organising the 2016 Myall Lakes Community Awards. Mr Bromhead said the awards which are now in their fifth year, recognise and celebrate the achievements of many individuals and groups in the Myall Lakes Electorate. “I am delighted to support these awards as it is my way of saying ‘thank you’ to those many volunteers and sporting organisations, which

make the Myall Lakes community a better place,” Mr Bromhead said. “The awards have six categories and I encourage all sporting and community groups, along with members of the general public of Myall Lakes, to nominate that special person or group helping others within the Myall Lakes community. “Also, people should not be concerned about nominating themselves for an individual award. “I meet so many

dedicated people here in the Myall Lakes on a daily basis so this is a wonderful chance to applaud just a few of them,” Mr Bromhead said. Commando Regiment 25th April, 2016. Unfortunately, for the 1,000 veterans who travelled to Vietnam for last week’s commemoration there were unexpected problems. The Vietnamese Government cancelled the main memorial event at the last minute. In the end, only a few people were allowed to visit the “Long Tan Cross” and then after waiting for several hours, their time to pay tribute was

cut to a minute. The Long Tan anniversary is a contentious event in Vietnam, with visitors to the “Cross Memorial,” not allowed to wear medals or uniforms. Filming, speeches and music are also banned. In Canberra, Governor General Peter Cosgrove led the commemoration at the Australian Warm Memorial, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition leader Bill Shorten paying their respects.

• Myall Lakes Community Group of the Year. Nomination forms are available from the Myall Lakes electorate office located at 1st Floor Bridgepoint Building, 1-9 Manning Street, Tuncurry or can be downloaded at: stephenbromhead.com.au Nominations close Friday 16 September 2016, with the awards being presented at a ceremony on Saturday 29 October 2016. q

PE teacher farewelled

There are other options OPINION Dear News Of The Area,

q

Ms Kate Hunt farewelled from Bulahdelah Central School.

By Daniel SAHYOUN AFTER teaching health and physical education for more than a decade at Bulahdelah Central School, Ms Kate Hunt has been farewelled after accepting a transfer to Figtree High School. Ms Hunt said it’s the students that she will miss the most. “We’ve got some awesome

kids and I’m going to miss teaching them and playing a role in their lives,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed supporting the students through their HSC so they can get the best result that they can achieve.” Ms Hunt said one of the many highlights of her time at the school was working closely with the students in her role of Year Advisor. “I particularly enjoyed

being a mentor and helping the children go through the trivialities and trials of adolescence,” she said. “It’s very rewarding playing a role in preparing these students for the wider world.” Ms Hunt made the decision to accept the transfer to be closer to her family in Wollongong. With preparations well

underway for the move south, Miss Hunt said she is sad to be leaving the area. “I’m going to miss the rural setting and the natural environment as I’ll be moving to a city,” she told News Of The Area. “Instead of a pleasant drive to work, I’ll now be driving through 50 sets of traffic lights,” she said.

I BELIEVE there are alternatives to removing the riverfront coral trees, and replacing them with Port Jackson figs. Pruning the existing coral trees would be a suitable solution, even though the haven’t lost any major branches in the last two years of storms, and have survived having roots removed when council upgraded the road and gutters. A coral tree at 64 Yamba Street, (opposite the day care centre) was very, very heavily pruned (almost back to the main trunk) last year, and is thriving, put out a mass of foliage last spring, and is now bare with a few flowers. NOTA 11 August, page 13, reported a fig tree in Tuncurry’s John Wright Park loosing a ‘’main leader” branch on a still evening! Not what you’d want

on the foreshore? I’m sure we’ve all driven under the figs outside our police station, and observed the dead fall from them after a storm or strong winds. Why not add summer shading trees to the foreshore, rather than remove and replace? In Hawaii and Tahiti a variety of hibiscus, a tree grows well close to the water. they have a buttercup yellow flower, that as the flower ages turns apricot, then passionfruit in colour before falling. There are at least three of these leafy and hardy hibiscus trees thriving in our twin towns. On the northern side of Mireen Street, opposite 66 Mireen, Another at 39 Yamba, also in Hawks Nest, and one at 18 Myall Street, Tea Gardens. Go have a look for yourself, and lets keep the Coral Trees for their summer shade and their stark leafless beauty in winter. Mind you I wouldn’t want to be sitting under a fruiting Fig tree, with bats and possums feeding and x’íng above. Phillip Everett, Hawks Nest

SES Cadets learn life lessons By Daniel SAHYOUN

TWENTY Myall Coast teenagers learnt valuable life lessons in teamwork, resilience and communication in the SES Cadet training program last week. The weeklong course prepared the next generation of volunteers for handling

emergency situations, The group were able to test their new skills in simulated search and rescue operations during a field trip to Camp Elim. Taking to the water in flood boats for river rescues, navigating land searches and learning hauling techniques for retrieval operations were all part of the program.

After successfully completing the course, Cadet Taylah Boyle said she was now considering joining the Emergency Services. “The course allowed us to put the theory into practice and showed just how important the SES is in emergency situations,” she said. “I’m developing the skills

needed to be able to go out and help people and it makes you feel good knowing that you are able to contribute to the community.” To gain an understanding of the inner workings of the SES, the Cadets also visited the Taree Emergency Precinct as part of the course. The Cadet program is

now in its eighth year and is delivered by Emergency Services volunteers with generous backing from Origin Energy. Regional SES Cadet Coordinator Garry Fajks told News Of The Area he was impressed with the professional manner in which the Cadets undertook the training. “They have learnt about the importance of developing community resilience, the

Mixed pairs result BOWLS

Karuah RSL Mens Bowls By Trevor DAVIES BOWLING years, while all different, have a cyclic nature. It’s no different in the Karuah RSL Men’s Bowling Club. The annual pennant competition has now wound up and the Club’s 2 teams did well without achieving the glory of last year and its long overdue win. The Championship Fours, Triples, Pairs and Singles are also over for the year, and the mixed pairs has just wound up. While some of the Club’s regular winners have figured heavily in the victories, a new Club Major Singles Champion, in the person of Brenden (Barney) Revell has emerged. Barney is another young champion that has shown

the depth and youth that will see Karuah remain a force in the Bowls District for many years. The Clubs members have a great reputation for welcoming all members of the bowls community to Karuah and are happy to share their picturesque facilities at the Karuah RSL Club with local or visiting players from novice to expert level. While keen to foster the top end of the bowling community the Club has a strong focus this year of assisting those who are either new to the sport, or those who have never had the chance to play. Any one wishing to try lawn bowls is invited to ring the club on 02 4997 5297 to find out more about opportunities to receive free lessons and coaching in the friendliest of environments.

q

Runners up of the Karuah Mixed Pairs, Pam Cembala and Peter Joass with winners, Robyn and Gordon Latimore.

Long story short, Karuah has a great Lawn Bowls Club, arguably the best grass green on the coast, and has

welcoming and friendly members who would love for you to come bowl with us.

Keep your eye on this, your local paper, each month to learn more on club happenings and

personalities. See you at the Karuah RSL Bowls Club.
