Market Day Brew By Margie TIERNEY FOR lovers of home brew, here’s a community event to mark on your calendar as a ‘must do’. The annual Pindimar/ Bundabah Market Day is just around the corner and organisers are calling for more home brewers and beer tasters to join in the fun at the 3 November event. “It gets bigger every year,” Betty Economos said. “There’s homebrewing, thong throwing, a cake baking competition and white elephant stall, just to name a few activities on offer.” To help wash down the home brew, there’s a sausage or egg and bacon

North Arm Cove and Karuah join VEGAS CASINO forces BINGO $30,000 THE North Arm Cove YESS group (Youth Encouragement Sports Support) was originally created to provide a $100 annual grant for the purchase of sporting equipment, to students entering high school. With surplus funds and few students eligible for the grant this year, the group looked for a worthy cause. And what could be more worthy than the residents of Dunedoo and surrounding areas in Central Western NSW devastated by bushfires and the ongoing drought. YESS members unanimously voted to donate $1,000 to the Dunedoo Central School, to be used to further sporting activities. North Arm Cove residents Joan and Colin Williams planned to take a trip to Broken Hill in September and saw this as an ideal opportunity to personally deliver a helping hand to the

Dunedoo and district rural communities. Joan sought the help of the North Arm Cove Stitch Gatherers group and the Karuah St. Columba Op-Shop who gladly donate pots and pans, crockery, toys, clothing, linen and bric-abrac. Realising that the women in rural areas were going without basic necessities, YESS asked Wilson Soh at Karuah Pharmacy if he could help out. Wilson agreed to provide $200 worth of goods at a discount price and put together boxes of essential items, including toothpaste, soap, moisturisers, women’s hygiene products etc. plus many other items at no charge. The North Arm Cove Stitch Gatherers group then spent a morning putting all these items, plus goods they had donated themselves, into gift bags, On 20 September, with their car and trailer packed to bursting, Joan and Colin Williams travelled to Dunedoo

to present the $1,000 cheque to the school and the donated items to the nearby Coolah Op Shop for distribution. On their travels they saw trucks loaded with hay for the region’s farmers.

Ms Williams said, “We were overwhelmed by people’s generosity and glad we could do our little bit to help.” “We all hope that the recent rain will bring some relief to these communities,” she said.

A dispute arose between AstraZeneca Pty Ltd (“the Company”) and the Australian Workers Union (“AWU”) in relation to how shift workers employed by the Company accrued personal /carer’s leave and whether the Company’s current practice of calculating personal/carer’s leave of shift workers was in accordance with the Fair Work Act 2009 (“FWC”). According to section 96 of the FWA, full time employees are entitled to 10 days of personal/carers leave. This totals to 76 hours of leave per year based on a

standard 7.6 hour work day. The AWU submitted that personal/carers leave should be calculated based on the worker’s typical shift meaning that an employee who works a 12-hours shift should accrue to 120 hours of leave. The FWC held that shift workers employed by the Company who work 12 and 10 hour shift rosters should have their sick leave entitlements calculated on the basis of their ‘typical’ work days. While this is an important decision that employers and shift workers should be aware of, there is currently a separate case before the Federal Court in relation to the correct interpretation of section 96 of the Fair Work Act and its application to shift workers.

Oyster and Timber was a hit By Rachael VAUGHAN

NOT even a week of threatening weather could dampen the spirits of attendees at the Karuah Oyster and Timber Festival. The beautiful banks of the Karuah River were the perfect setting for a fun-filled day, with the blue sky breaking through to provide perfect conditions for the event. Festival organisers outdid themselves with a plethora of activities, offering something for everyone. The children’s fishing

competition was a hit, with lots of enjoyment by all entrants. In particular, the youngest fisherman in the event had everyone smiling. Young Mitch Reynolds took our fourth place with a beautiful 31cm bream, which won him a tackle box and ackleworld hat. The duck race was a crowd favourite again this year, and the oyster eating competition was fiercely contested by seafood lovers united. Timber choppers

Walkway Memorial By Margie TIERNEY MEMBERS of the Tea Gardens Men’s Shed have finished a labour of love which benefits all the community. A new timber walking bridge now spans a section of ‘Swan Bay’ in Hawks Nest thanks to the hard work of the Men’s Shed and other community volunteers who donated their time and expertise to the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association. “The walkway is intended as a low key memorial to the memory of Kerry Jennings whose sudden passing recently is still a big loss to our local community,” Kevin Green, Secretary of the Progress Association told News Of The Area. “Her husband, Trevor Jennings, was a past president of the Progress Association and Kerry was instrumental in supporting Trevor and the Association as well as other community groups in the area.” Kevin added, “In fact, Kerry and Trevor built the first bridge at the site providing local walkers with a shortcut across a drain over the riverside

reserve off Koonwarra Drive in Hawks Nest.” “Unfortunately this bridge was soon vandalised and became unusable.” “The new walkway is a much more robust construction and while it can be used now, it will be dedicated to Kerry by a small opening ceremony when Trevor returns to town later in the year and installs a memorial plaque.”

impressed the crowds with their strength, and car enthusiasts enjoyed the collection of classic cars. Crowds feasted on a variety of hot food, ice creams, cake stalls, wine, cheese and oysters and the good old aussie sausage sizzle. Thousands of locals and tourists enjoyed the best Karuah had to offer on this special weekend that is gaining in popularity every year. One attendee, Ryan Beehan came with his family for the weekend from the

central coast, after seeing the posters advertised on a trip up the coast last month to see family. “We took the opportunity to book a van at the Big 4, and made a weekend of it.” “We were surprised by the shuttle service this morning too, so that made our weekend even easier to get around and enjoy the festival,” “It’s been a great weekend, and something we’d like to continue to come back for.”

In the meantime, the Progress Association would like to thank all those who assisted in the project. Kevin said, “MidCoast Council handled and delivered the timber piles to site, the local Men’s Shed, who always do such good community work and Lofty Crane Services.” “We thank all, for their-generous donations of time, equipment and efforts.”

School Surprise By Margie TIERNEY

A BIG surprise awaited the students of Tea Gardens Primary School, when they returned from holidays last week. “Our students came back to school to a whole new range of sports equipment thanks to the generosity of our community who collected in excess of 120 000 vouchers or about 40 kilograms worth, through the Coles Sports for School program,” Principal Mark Clemson told News Of The Area. “Because it was based on the number of vouchers collected, it’s hard to put an exact monetary figure to how much we received although I can say with confidence that it would be easily in the $3000-$4000 range if not more,” Mark said. And what did that mean in terms of equipment. “We ordered class sets of skipping ropes in varied sizes, kits of balls including footballs, soccer balls, basketballs, net balls, echidna balls, cricket balls, tennis balls, you name it and we have it,” Mark said. But wait there’s more. “We also have a class

set of kanga sacks (jumping sacks), sets of egg and spoons and foam javelins to support our athletics programs.” “All this equipment will help develop of students fundamental movement skills.” The smiles on the children said it all, while Mark Clemson had this message for the Myall Community. “One thing I love about our community is the true community spirit of giving to others and this is highlighted by the level of support given to our school during the program.”

Players enjoyed a game of bowls and supported the Oncology Day by way of numerous raffles and a great tombola. The ladies are to be congratulated in raising some $5,500.00 for the Oncology Unit at the Mater Hospital, Newcastle.

Another amazing effort from the mighty Dolphins! 20 October: What happens when three Bowling Clubs arrive at Tea Gardens on the same day? Great fun and good bowling that’s what happens! Players from Tea Gardens entertained bowlers from the Fingal Bay “Ferrets” and the Kotara Flying Bowling Club today with a fierce game of Triples played over 14 ends. Club Patron, Gary Melrose provided the prizes, but everyone was a winner today including the game of bowls. The weather was perfect the company was great and the bowling, competitive. I hope we can do this again next year!

Minor Pairs Competition and Oncology Day Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS

TUESDAY 16th Oct: A great day of bowling. The final of the Club Championship Minor Pairs Competition was contested Bev Rhodes and Lynne Green v Pam Gilchrist and Christine Fossey. I guess it would be true to say Bev

and Lynne had control of this final from beginning to end. They held at 10 shot lead at completion of the 5th end, 19 shots at 11 ends finally winning by 17 shots, 29 v 12. Both teams bowled superbly but Bev and Lynne obviously were too strong a combination on the day. Thanks to Kathie Rimmer, Jo Younghusband, Dale Winter

and Ingrid Luck for your help. Format for play for social bowlers was a game of Triples and a game of Fours. Welcome to new bowler Jan Coomber who bowled with Ingrid Luck, Karen Green and Dale Winter. Unfortunately this team lost to Jeanette Emmett, Dorothy Thompson, Dawn May and Elizabeth Kelly 25 v 8. A close game

on the next Rink. Lynda Richards, Jill McBride and Pat Baker were leading by 2 shots until the last end when victory was snatched from them by Dawn May, Sandra Leisemann and Karen McPhie who gained 5 shots on the 18th end, 19 v 16. Winners on the day with the lowest score were Dawn, Sandra and

Karen. Double celebrations for Karen who won the raffle. Thanks to Myall Bistro and Café for donating our raffle prize. No bowls for Thursday 18th October. Thursday 19th October: TGWBC Annual Oncology Day, all money raised is donated to the Calvary Mater Hospital Newcastle Auxiliary.

We all know that a plethora of mobile phone apps exist in this techno age, but, a new app has left me in shock and awe! This clandestine new app is only available on the “Dark Web”. It combines existing technologies, but, with a new extension, which is called “Skin Percentage Ratio Recognition”, that can “search into” any other mobile within range, isolate and digitally scan the “Photo Gallery”, then, once recognising images of persons, download only the images which reveal more than 75% skin! I am sure you will fully comprehend the purpose and the implications of this notorious new app. In this technological age, everything we once used to consider private, is now out there, flying through the ether. Our conversations, texts, banking, financial details and photos are all flying through the air, residing in the clouds, available to any hacker! Troubled Mr Mac, Tea Gardens

Dear Mr Mac, NO wonder you are troubled! It sounded as though you were sitting in a Crime Scene Investigation unit. I pictured you surrounded by mounting piles of paperwork, a half doughnut and stale coffee within hands’ reach, a loyal German Shepherd called Muster at your feet. Loitering behind you was a geeky yet attractive girl with a short fringe, red lipstick and Doc Martins, busily uncovering important new evidence about the infiltration of clandestine groups and information orbiting the earth like some fake Chinese moon. Every now and then, mysterious CSI music played followed by typewriter sound effects, ridiculously out of date in this day and age, but it gave the scene the right ‘feel’. I felt so anxious about this ‘skin app’, that I turned on the television for some diversionary therapy. Rage was on, so I was confronted by music videos revealing about 85 per cent skin. That sent me into a real spin, so I went to One Mile for a swim and found out that a man had just that morning been bitten on the bicep by a shark. He’d been swimming at Samurai so he was probably showing 100 per cent skin. You are right, though. Everything that was once private is now flying through the ether, which is why you should only post things that you wouldn’t mind the world seeing. There’s evil lurking in every corner, Mr Mac, maybe even in the coastal paradise known as Tea Gardens. Cue dramatic music, Muster raising one eyebrow in a quizzical way, and the geeky girl uncovering a new cell of weirdos. Carpe diem. Jasminda.

TEA GARDENS local Police Senior Constable Dave Coyle is the driving force behind the upcoming annual Police Charity Golf Day at the Hawks Nest Golf Course. “Friday 2 November is fast approaching with spots filling quickly,” Dave Coyle said. “We were 4 players short of a full course last year and am hopeful of reaching the magical number of 144 players this year.” The Police Charity Golf day is one of the most

popular events on the Hawks Nest golf calendar. David Coyle told News Of The Area, “It is a Charity Day which has seen our local Meals on Wheels receive new fridges and stainless steel kitchens.” “The Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Club has been given new training boards for the juniors.” And the list goes on. Money raised from the Police Golf Charity day has put electric raise chairs in our local nursing homes, put a year’s fuel in the Clinic Bus and a set of jerseys for the

JIMMY’S BEACH: Myall Masters Open Water Swim.

‘Mobbsy’ Memorial Swim By Margie TIERNEY

OVER the past couple of weeks members of the Myall Masters Swimming Club have been travelling up and down the coast competing in Sydney and the Central Coast. At the State Short Course

Championships in Woy Woy, Peter Kellaway came away with two Gold Medals, Leon Bobako two Gold and a Silver, and Chris Lock, despite a damaged knee came away with one Gold and two Bronze. The Woy Woy event followed on from the

Warringah Masters Swim meet in Sydney which saw Myall Masters members both compete and undertake marshalling training. “Leon was a fantastic ambassador, entering four events of which he gained three firsts and one second place, finishing the meet

first overall in his age group,” Valerie Mobbs said. Members of the Myall Masters Swimming Club are also in training mode ahead of this year’s second annual Jimmy’s Beach Open Water Swim in Hawks Nest. You don’t have to be a member to enter the 1.5

kilometre memorial swim, named in honour of the late Chris ‘Mobbsy’ Mobbs or the 600 metre swim. “Entry costs $30 per swimmer,” Valerie said. “You’ll receive a swim cap, certificate of recognition, water and refreshments at the end of

your swim and lunch at the Surf Club.” To enter head to https:// myallmastersswimming. tidyhq.com/public/ schedule/events or contact Chris Lock on 042 999 018. Entries for the marathon on Sunday 11 November close on 4 November.
