Australia Day for the Myall By Margie TIERNEY THERE are plenty of ways to mark Australia day this Thursday 26 January, 2017. Here’s a few suggestions if you live anywhere between Karuah and Bulahdelah. The Karuah RSL has put together a program of very Aussie activities from thong throwing, to fun bowling, fireworks and a local produce display and auction. If you’re in the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area, head to Moira Parade Park

later date. More products will be arriving in the coming months. Organic, locally spun 100 percent merino wool is being prepared and will be ready for the next Bulahdelah Farmers Market. In addition to the Bulahdelah Farmers Market, the Tea Gardens Farmers Market is held on the first Saturday of the month.

THE Genuine Farmers Market has begun its time at Bulahdelah. The markets, held in the car park of the Plough Inn Hotel, will now take place the second Saturday of every month from 8am-1pm. The first market was held on Thursday 19 January with six stalls selling a range of local products or products made by local people.

The vibe was definitely one of organic and ethical farming as there was open range eggs to purchase, handmade clothes and jewellery, goat’s milk products, pure honey, homemade fudge, organic and locally grown vegetables and local wine. There was a constant flow of community members trickling through, looking, talking and buying.

“Small local markets allow community members to meet up because there is a set time to stroll through. If the locals support it, the market will continue to grow,” Janet Murray, who was supplying wine tasting and selling Twin Bridges wine, said. All the producers and market stalls also sell at Tea Gardens and Nabiac and even direct from their farms but enjoyed their first time at Bulahdelah.

NSW Labor has accused NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner of “dropping the ball” on the current Statewide outbreak of Ross River Fever – the worst outbreak in two years. In the last seven weeks alone, NSW Health has reported 229 cases. NSW Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord today demanded Mrs Skinner step up public education campaigns on preventing the mosquito-borne disease Ross River Fever. “Make no mistake, we are the middle of a Ross River surge in NSW … and again, the State Government and its health minister are unprepared,” Mr Secord said. This was after NSW Health confirmed that December 2016 was the worst month for Ross River Fever in the year with a 155 recorded cases. The increase in Ross River Fever reports from November 2016 to December 2016 was almost five-fold. As of January 20, 2017 there were 108 cases so far in NSW. Mr Secord said we are

in a “perfect storm” for mosquitoes. “It is very wet, humid and there have been king tides along the major rivers in Sydney. That means plenty of breeding opportunities for mosquitoes in our waterways and in still water in backyards.” “Unfortunately, the State Government and its health minister Jillian Skinner have dropped the ball on another public health issue.” Ross River fever is one of a group of viruses called arboviruses (or arthropodborne viruses), which are spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. Some will have flu-like symptoms that include fever, chills, headache and aches and pains in the muscles and joints. Some joints can become swollen, and joint stiffness may be particularly noticeable in the morning. A general feeling of being unwell, tired or weak may also occur at times during the illness; and some may experience symptoms such as joint pain and tiredness for many months.

Mark Fraser, CEO of the PIAA, will be hosting the forum at the Hunter Pet Motel, the only fully accredited boarding facility in the Hunter. Baron’s owners, Dean Compton and Nathan Wilson, spoke with News Of The Area this week about the forum. “Losing Baron in such away has been horrific,” Nathan said. “The hours and days that followed showed us that our story, although devastating to our family, was not that

different from the hundreds of messages we were receiving from other people who also lost their pets in preventable and shocking circumstances whilst in the care of facilities across the country.” “This is when we realised our story, our worst moments, were only just scratching the surface,” he said. Nathan and Dean reflected on the hundreds of messages of support they have received, including celebrities, who either share their love of animals or have a similar tragic story to tell. In the time since Baron’s death, Dean and Nathan have met with media,

industry leaders, industry professionals and politicians. “Our story gave animals like Baron, and their owners, their voice,” Dean said. “We owe it to Baron and the hundreds like him who have died in facilities across the country, those who were disregarded by the facilities that were entrusted to care for them.” “We now stand with the support of thousands and demand industry reform.” “The industry is listening and change will happen,” he said. Galleries in the Gardens turns eight

By Margie TIERNEY

AS we near the end of the summer school holiday season, there’s still plenty to do in the Myall. The Galleries in the Gardens art exhibition is now in its eighth season in the grounds of the Tea Gardens Hotel on Marine Parade. Events Co-Ordinator Di Ayers told News Of The Area, “This is my first year on the Committee, but I’ve been a weekend visitor to Hawks Nest for 20 years and we’ve been coming for 40 years and now we live here permanently.” “To be a member of Galleries in the Gardens you must live here or own a house here and spend the majority of your time painting and in this environment.” The event showcases the works of some 36 artists, who reach for their brushes, clay, cameras or other mediums to contribute to the event. “Beautiful paintings, local artists, too many choices,” said weekend visitor to Tea Gardens, Liz Cullen. There’s still time to catch the Cool Summer Art Exhibit this Saturday 28 January and then every second Saturday.

TAHLEE is offering a range of opportunities to enjoy its exquisite site on the Port Stephens Bay this summer. General Director John Anderson spoke with Myall Coast News of the Area about the camps and conventions that sees 6000-8000 people a year coming onto its site. On Friday 20 January, 950 people were packing up from a weekly camp that accommodated young adults from Brisbane, Melbourne and Newcastle. These camps see volunteer leaders teach life skills and citizenship skills, and offer a drug and alcohol free environment. But camps and conventions are only one of the ways to utilise the acres of bushland, waterways and infrastructure. Historic tours are conducted of the historic house, which is on site, and also to promote the unique history of the start of the MidCoast Council area. Magical Smiles at the Library By Margie TIERNEY ASK Magician Quenorie Eades what she loves about performing and she tell you, “It’s not the destination, it’s the ride.” Due to popular demand, Quenorie was back at the Tea Gardens Library last week to entertain more than 30 youngsters in a show that leaves her audience in stitches. Four-year-old Keeley McMahon was among the spellbound crowd. Her mum, Jodie, said, “She’d been looking forward to it for weeks.”

“Last night, she was a little bit worried that they were going to turn her into a frog,” Jodie told News Of The Area. But of course, they turned her into a Princess. Quenorie Eades has loved magic since childhood but it wasn’t until she became a mum herself that she decided to take it more seriously. ‘’Sometimes things don’t always go to plan,” she said. “I went to a holiday park and one of the tricks went wrong and there was a little boy in the audience who yelled, ‘Fail, Epic, Fail’ and I thought, that’s it, if I’m going

to do this I have to do it well.” Quenorie’s magic appeals to the young and young at heart. Cessnock sisters, 11-year-

By Rachael VAUGHAN RESIDENTS from Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest can now take advantage of an old fashioned initiative launched this week by local Growers ‘Tomatoes in Abundance’. After being asked by market organisers at the growers market to come along with their produce, owner Daniel Marquez decided to offer fresh, pesticide-free fruit and vegetable boxes for drop off in the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest areas. Daniel told News Of The Area, “We want to provide the community with an option for farm fresh produce, free from chemicals and pesticides, at affordable prices.” “We noticed a need in the area for fresh produce but no

easy way to access it, so thought if there was enough interest we would just organise to bring it direct to them,” he said. Daniel runs a family farm, steeped in family tradition, having been taught the skills in growing organic produce by his grandfather, the late Luis Rodriguez. With the passing of his grandfather just over two years ago, Daniel took it upon himself to do something in his grandfather’s honour as a way of thanking him for teaching him the skills he now has as a farmer and continuing to farm with the passion his grandfather had for the land. Daniel hopes to provide this new service to the area on a weekly/fortnightly basis if there is enough interest. Tomatoes in Abundance is

EDITORIAL STATEMENT:

TWO unregistered motorcycles and a tool box were stolen from a rural property on Wootton Way between 7 and 14 January. Police report the offenders removed the items from the location after gaining access to a storage shed by forcing open a lock.

Prepare Your Home THERE are some simple things householders in Port Stephens can do around your home to prepare it for a bushfire. Preparation is a key factor and the NSW Rural Fire Service implores all residents, regardless of where they live, to prepare well beforehand. “It is essential that residents of Port Stephens have a bushfire plan because leaving it to the last minute could be too late,” Medowie Brigade Captain Andrew Collins said. The five simple things you can do before and during the bushfire season are: 1. Trim overhanging trees and shrubs. This can stop the fire spreading to your home. 2. Mow grass and remove the cuttings. Have a cleared area around your home. 3. Remove material that can burn around your home (e.g. door mats, wood piles, mulch, leaves, paint, outdoor furniture). 4. Clear and remove all the debris and leaves from the gutters surrounding your home.

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

Burning embers can set your home on fire. 5. Prepare a sturdy hose or hoses that will reach all around your home. Make sure you have a reliable source of water. The Fire Service also advises people to block up areas where embers can enter the house, install metal fly screens on all windows and vents and install metal gutter guards
. “Gas cylinders should be positioned on the side of the house with the relief valve pointing away from flammable material. Garden beds should be kept away from the house
and replace mulch with stones,” a spokesperson said. “Overhanging branches should be removed from power lines, ensure that that a fire tanker can access your property and keep a well-maintained area around the home and sheds. “Make sure hoses have spray nozzles and keep water tanks full and connected to pumps.” For further information contact the service at www. rfs.nsw.gov.au.

The offenders also attempted to force the lock off a shipping container at the property without success. No tyre tracks or other physical evidence was left at the scene. Due to the items stolen, police believe more than one person was involved in the theft. Police investigations are continuing.

Tyron told News Of The Area he learned invaluable lessons during his time in detention and wants to use them to help others. “I’ve changed my ways and learnt so much and want to help young fellas stay away from trouble.” I’ve always tried to help my younger generation, and show them that there’s other ways of life rather than spending it in jail,” he said. Tyron remarked that during his time in detention, he met a lot of young people who had so much more to give than what they were able to while incarcerated. “While I was in juvie and jail, I met a hell of a lot of talent that should be out here showing it, not wasting it in there.” “I want the young people from my mob to do great things and be proud of themselves and our culture.” Tyron’s talent is remarkable; his art speaks to you from a deeply spiritual place. Happy Little Vegemites

News Of The Area

By Jewell DRURY

THERE is nothing more Australian than waking up on Australia Day to a hot piece of toast smeared with lashings of butter and Vegemite. Men at Work sung about a vegemite sandwich in their famous hit song “Down Under” and John Williamson sang that there was nothing more true blue, “than standin’ by your mate when he’s in a fight. Or just Vegemite.” The news that Vegemite is set to return to Australian ownership is a great way to kick off 2017. Dairy company Bega recently announced that it would buy most of Mondelez International’s Australia and New Zealand grocery and cheese business. The deal will see Bega take over Mondelez’s Port Melbourne factory, where 300,000 jars are produced daily. Vegemite has been a part of Australia’s history for as long as some of us can remember. Australia’s favourite spread was developed in Melbourne from leftover Brewer’s Yeast with a variety of vegetable and spice additives, by Cyril Percy Callister in 1922. Originally Vegemite was promoted as a healthy food for children during World War II. The advertising emphasised its medicinal value: “Vegemite fights with the men up north! If you are one of those who don’t need Vegemite medicinally, then thousands of invalids are asking you to

“Today is a historic day for Bega Cheese,” executive chairman Barry Irvin said. “This is an exciting evolution for the company, these iconic brands alongside the Bega brand are strong building blocks to enable Bega Cheese to become a great consumer goods business.” “We’re really proud of the Bega brand, we think there’s so many opportunities about how we might market and build two iconic Australian brands in Bega Cheese and Vegemite,” he added. Bega is acquiring salad dressings and other products such as Parmesan cheese, but it does not include Kraft’s Philadelphia cheese business.

deny yourself of it for the time being.” At the same time, Vegemite was promoted as essential for “infant welfare” in magazines with advertisements promoting the importance of the B complex vitamins to health. Vegemite soon rose in popularity by the marketing campaign written by J. Walter Thompson advertising in 1954 with groups of smiling, healthy children singing a catchy jingle titled, “We’re happy little Vegemites”. The advertising campaign appeared on television in 1956 and was later remastered in 1980.

I want to hear some of your ideas as we continue to develop policies to improve our local area and our nation.

Some light on things for First-home Buyers ACCORDING to First National Real Estate chief executive Ray Ellis, there’s no time like the present if you’ve been waiting to buy your first home because no matter what you’re trying to buy, values in Australia and New Zealand are just going up and up. “The median dwelling value in Australia for the end of 2016 was $615,000 – an increase of 10.9 percent through the year, according to a CoreLogic RP Data report from January 3,” Mr Ellis said. “New Zealand didn’t

perform too differently, with the median house value in December 2016 sitting at $627,905, having grown by 12.5 per cent, as stated by QV.” “As year-on-year increases show, home values aren’t indicating that they’re about to slow down. That’s why buying your first home right now is a great idea, because you’ll be striking before homes shoot beyond your budget even more.” Buying in a suburb that is on the verge of growing, and is highly desirable in terms of proximity to amenities,

public transport, schools and major centres, is the safest bet. When you rent in a suburb like that, you get all of the advantages of being close to those sorts of places, but your payments won’t be earned back when you leave the home. You’ll pay rent over the time you live in the home, and then when you leave, you don’t reap the rewards. “Of course, renting is a great option for people who can’t yet afford a home deposit, but buying one can shore up your financial future,” Mr Ellis said.

Dear Jas,

q

I’ve a severe case of beach space rage. It seems every time I’ve ventured to the beach over summer, people/whole families are ready to practically sit on my towel or move in under my umbrella. Not only has it happened to my family, but I witness it happening to others too, despite there being a whole beach. What is the go here? Where have manners gone? Am I being too petty?

Social Darts TWENTY-EIGHT social darts players descended on the Hawks Nest Golf Club to play a social competition of four rounds of darts. Of the 14 mixeddoubles teams, two teams achieved the best results of winning four of their four compulsory games. The two teams had to have another game, a playoff, to decide the night’s winning and running up team. The winners for the mixed doubles social team darts were Trevor Peirson and Ross Smith. The running up team were Phillip Jones and Kumaresh Harvey. The ladies’ highest score competition winner for the evening was Glenis Hartcher, achieving 120 wellearned points. The men’s highest score competition winner was Trevor Peirson, achieving a very good score of 140 points. Darts will recommence at 7pm Wednesday 25 January 2017. Great Darts.

Mrs AC, Salamander Bay IN his 1923 novel Kangaroo, D.H. Lawrence described Australian beachgoers as “mindless as opossums”. After receiving your email, I conducted some cuttingedge research with the chardonnay-sippers under my ornamental grapevine, and it appears that Lawrence’s assessment still stands. They too have been irritated by uncouth hordes invading their personal beach space: thoughtless towel shakers and undernourished budgie smugglers were top-of-the-list irritations. Something happens when people get a good whiff of salty air and pheromones. They shed their layers (physically and metaphorically) and revert back to a carefree (some would say barbaric) childhood state. Lara Bingle hasn’t helped (you don’t look like Lara Bingle do you? If so, no wonder people are throwing themselves on your lap). When she said, “Where the bloody hell are you?” with her perky chest and vacuous stare, she invited beach bedlam. It’s been spreading like a venereal disease, from Bondi to Bagnalls, ever since. So, what you need to do, Mrs AC, is create some firm boundaries. When I say firm, I mean four tomato stakes and a roll of crime scene tape. For added impact, get the kiddies to make a ‘victim’ sandcastle and cover it in a white sheet. I guarantee the general public will stay away, though be prepared for a bit of Port Stephens Local Area Command interrogation between swims. Carpe Diem, Jasminda.

Club Fours Championship Final

18 January Heat wave temperatures today prevented any play today in the usual Wednesday bowls. A smart move on behalf of the organisers as health issues will always take precedent.

20 January A good field of 20 bowlers contested the Friday Open Jackpot Pairs today in warm weather and a slight breeze. There were 4 games of Pairs and 1 game of triples played. Rain interrupted play late in the afternoon, however most rinks were finished in time to avoid a drenching. Today, the highest winning margin plus ends was the formula chosen. It was the winners of the Triples game that took first

place. Congratulations to; Vic Garlick, Col Amos and Keith Smith. Runners-up were; Bill Heylbut and Robyn Beaumont. The jackpot was not won.

21 January The semi-finals of the Club Fours Championship were played today in cool, overcast conditions. On Rink 9, the team of Ross Barry, Mark Hair, Scott Beaumont and Greg Pearson took on the defending champions Richard Lee, Jeff Baker, Sean Mearrick and Paul Syron. It was an entertaining, tough match but the Greg Pearson combination could not get any momentum going. At the 14th, ends were divided 7-all, but they trailed by 9 shots.

The pressure kept mounting with the defending champions running away winning 24-10. On Rink 11, the team of Colin Farrugia, Graham Kelly, Brian Emmett and Kerry O’Brien challenged John Slater, John Younghusband, George Winter and Doug Naylor. It was all team O’Brien for most of the match. At the 10 th they led 9-4. The Doug Naylor side slowly pegged that back and it was not until the 17th end that they edged in front leading 12-11. With two ends to play the scores were tied at 13-13. A 4 on the 20th end, the first one of the match, favoured the Naylor side and the game was still up-forgrabs going into the last end. With opposition shots in the head, a last bowl drive

q Defending Club Fours Champions: Richard Lee, Paul Syron, Sean Mearrick and Jeff Baker winning their way to the 2017 Club Fours Championship final.

THE final of the Club Championship Fours was played on Tuesday 17 January. The majority of members

Players should note that this year the championship will be decided over 18 ends of 3-bowl pairs. The Minor singles Championship is due to commence on Saturday 18 February with the second round played the next day.

this prediction proved to be correct. The team members were Lorraine Harvey, Karen McPhie, Vicki Rankin and Lynne Green versus Kayelene Pearson, Karen Green, Lily Smith and Dale Winter. Lorraine’s team was leading by 8 shots on the 10th end. Kayelene’s team scored 7 shots on the 13th end bringing the score to 12 v 10 their way. The following ends were “neck to neck”. By the 19th end Lorraine’s team were 3 shots ahead. Kayelene’s team sent

down some great bowls and gained 8 shots for the last two ends, winning the final 25 to 20. Great bowling by all competitors. It was magic to watch such a great game of bowls. Thanks to Nola Jackson for umpiring and to the social committee: Wendy Jones, Sheril Johnson, Francis Betar and Sandra Leisemann for providing our delicious lunch. The winners for social bowls were Robyn Beaumont, Jill McBride and Wendy Jones. Happy birthday to club President Robyn Webster, who is celebrating a very important birthday this month. Social bowls were played on Thursday 19 January and thankfully things had cooled

Cameron. Carl Williams will build on his experience on the wing in the top grade. It is expected he will be supported on the other wing by a player who was top try-scorer in the Group One competition in 2016. Early in the season, the Club has signed new players, Brendan Lynch, and Kurt Langdon, who both have demonstrated ability. Also expected to sign is former grade player, Harley ‘bam bam’ Tarawa, who will put another string in the Hawks bow. A number of other players are also considering

a crack with the Hawks. The Club is welcoming any player that may want to test themselves in a higher competition. Official training will start on Tuesday January 31at Myall Park 6pm. The Malabulla boys, led by President’s Award winner, Benny Mossop, are uncommitted after the “Panthers” reformation in 2017. Irrespective of their decision, the Hawks Club has a new perspective on their Club after impressive player efforts in the 2016 season. At this stage, the Hawks will remain in “A” grade, however with the demise of the Newcastle Toohey’s Cup third grade competition, and with the influx of District Club supported sides into

the competition, the Hawks may have a case to return to “B” grade. Flagged for 2017 is an “Old Boys” celebration day (or weekend). Long awaited, and requested for many years, the Club is committed to the event this year. The “Hawks Tea Gardens” facebook page will have details and updates. The Hawks Supporters Club will remain in place in 2017. Membership renewals are due from March 31st. Contact ‘Dakka’ on 0408 434593 for further details. To contact the Club phone 0417 226619 or email: nreynolds.2@ bigpond.com.

Hawks Back in Action Hawks Tea Gardens [Rugby League] By Neil REYNOLDS THE Tea Gardens Hawks will be back in action with trial games in early March. Brooke Roach is preparing his 9th campaign for the Club, bringing together a squad with plenty of determination. Mikey Nanai has led a strong pre-season fitness program, with an emphasis on commitment. Roach has flagged his return to the starting lineup, after a struggle with persistent injury in 2016. He will be supported

up front by incumbent “player of the year” John Shultz. The return of impact forwards, Kirran ShearerClarke and Matty Cameron, along with Steven Soper will add to the Hawks’ resolve. David Edmonds is also returning to the squad, which will complement an already strong utility factor, led by Jack Beverley and Mitch Baker. “A” Grade player of the year, Billy Greentree is committed to maintaining his status, and young gun CJ Misifosa has already stamped an attitude on the side at training. Isaiah Bower will be

pressing for a starting position this season. Nathan Ruse will play his 100th game for the Hawks this year. “Blood” has been an integral part of the team since 2010. His no-nonsense defence and consistency has been a mainstay of the Club’s success. Regan Hunter is expected to consolidate his improving form. Cain Waterman and Tarryn Roach have been training strongly. Trent Murphy has pledged another hit out, marking his 16th season. Livewire dummy half, Nick Clarke will back up, along with dominant defensive centre Anthony

down a bit, weather wise. The winners with the highest margin were Robyn Webster, Karen McPhie, Jo Younghusband and Lorraine Harvey. It was great to see Nola Jackson bowling again. Good to see your absence has not affected your great bowling ability. Congratulations to our club member Vicki Rankin. Vicki also plays representative bowls with the Newcastle District. Newcastle defeated Illawarra District recently winning the Howard Shield. Vicki is now off to bowl in Canberra with the district team on 20, 21 and 22 January for the Perpetual Trophy. Good bowling to all. The Club Major Singles Championship commences on 2 February, 2017.
