Christmas Festival announced By Rachael VAUGHAN FOR the first time, the Myall Coast Christmas Carols Festival (MCCC) will be held this year in the Tea Gardens Public School on Sunday 16 December from 5pm to 7pm. A celebration to participate in and enjoy, the production will include massed choirs from our local community and school choirs. There will be solo artists and childrens items, together with community singing throughout the evening, and yes, Santa will be there with some goodies to share. MCCC will be under the guidance of Michael Harvey, internationally acclaimed Musical
Director, award winning Pianist and Conductor for ten years of “Carols in The Domain”, a National telecast on the Seven Network. This will be a unique occasion, with the focus on children and their families, with all proceeds going towards the outstanding service provided by the Tea Gardens & Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club. There will also be an opportunity during the evening to give to and support this worthy cause. Admission will be by gold coin donation with tickets available shortly. An event not to be missed, so put this in your diaries now as we head towards the busy Christmas season.
q Children of the Howarth & Rapley families; Sophie, Tom, Madeleine, Alice, Poppy, Laura and Saxon, all very excited about The Myall Coast Christmas Carols.

River in Tea Gardens is done and dusted. Approximately 10,000 cubic metres of sand was removed from the river in the region opposite the Tea Gardens Police Station and transferred to the stock pile at Winda Woppa. long and hard for the dredge. “Tea Gardens Gutway was used as a channel for timber droghers during the timber era in the late 1800’s when Tea Gardens had a population of about 1,500,” Gordon Grainger from the MRAG said. “The Gut became a mooring area when that trade finished up,” he said. “The MRAG would like to thank the State Government for funding, MidCoast Council for
taking on this project and Mr Glen Bunny from the Department of Crown Lands Newcastle office for his support.” Mr Grainger added, “We would also like to acknowledge the assistance and support we have received from the Winda Woppa Association in reaching this outcome.” Next on the list of the Myall River Action Group’s projects is the state of our boat ramps. “A number of boat ramps in Tea Gardens and
Hawks Nest are in need of urgent attention,” Mr Grainger said. “We’ve received a number of complaints from boat owners that their trailers have been damaged after using the Moira Parade ramp in Hawks Nest.” “Of immediate concern is the oncoming tourism season: the ramp is slippery and the ends drops into deep water, a disaster waiting to happen.”
October.” “We’re very aware of the importance of having it finished by then to allow everyone to enjoy the Festival.” It’s a big job, with the platform of the pontoon being constructed in Victoria. The new pontoon will be similar to the one already in use opposite the Tea Gardens Hotel, but it has been designed to create more berthing areas. “As part of the project a shelter will be constructed on the existing public wharf, also located on Marine Drive, to provide protection against the
elements for users of this popular boat launching facility,” MidCoast Council’s Rhett Pattison said. “Use of the wharf will not be impacted, but minor disruptions for
pedestrian traffic can be expected.” The project is being funded under the “Better Boating Now Program” an initiative of Roads and Maritime Services
Work begins on new pontoon By Margie TIERNEY
IT’S taken years of planning and campaigning, but work has finally begun on a new pontoon opposite the Ice Cream Shack on Marine Drive in Tea Gardens. Locals heading over the bridge from Hawks Nest or strolling along Marine Drive couldn’t help but notice the 130,000 tonne crane which was being used last week to install the pilings for the pontoon. Contractors for MidCoast Council told News Of The Area, “We’re doing all we can to get the pontoon finished before the Myall River Festival in

On Friday October 5, children aged between 5 and 11 can join in the fun of creating their own mini world. “Our ‘shoebox activity’ involves some good old fashioned craft, using scissors, paper, colouring in, cutting and pasting and lots of imagination,” Library Chris Shelly told News Of The Area. The activity is being run between the hours of 2.30pm and 3.30pm and is free to all, but bookings are essential. In the second week of the school holidays, Librarian Carol Johnson will be running the ‘Animals on the Move’ craft afternoon. “Carol will teach them how to make an animal, such as a lizard or a snake that will actually move,” Chris said.
Jessica said. But with 3 prizes of $100 for first, $50 for second and a third prize of $25 what’s a little water.
“The object of the exercise is to combine art with science, and of course have fun at the same time.” ‘Animals on the Move’ is being held on Wednesday 10 October between 2.30pm and 3.30pm. “In both instances, we’re encouraging a family friendly policy with these activities, with both free of charge.” Children under the age of eight need to be supervised by an adult. NCAT looked at several issues in this Dividing Fences application, the most interesting one involved retaining walls.
In short, the applicants had served a Fencing Notice under section 11 of the Dividing Fences Act 1991 (NSW) (the Act), which was not agreed to by the neighbours. At the same time the respondents began an action in the Supreme Court of New South Wales substantially in negligence and trespass. The key issue for the Tribunal was whether the orders sought in relation to a new/replacement retaining wall fell within the definition of fencing work as defined by the Act. Generally, the definition of fencing work under the Act excludes “retaining walls”, except where they are a “…
foundation or support necessary for the support and maintenance of the fence” (paragraph (c) of the definition of “fence”). The Tribunal considered whether the primary purpose of the retaining wall was: 1) to retain soil; or, 2) as a footing/support for the dividing fence. It concluded that the Applicant must bring evidence about whether the retaining wall work falls within paragraph (c). It is not enough to just state what work is proposed. Without evidence the Tribunal could not infer the retaining wall fell within paragraph (c). The application was dismissed. The Tribunal did not expressly state what evidence would be sufficient, it is likely a suitably qualified expert would be required to show the primary purpose falls within paragraph (c).

Gentleman’s Ride was founded in Sydney, Australia by Mark Hawwa. It was inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the oftennegative stereotype of men on motorcycles, whilst connecting niche motorcycle communities together. That first ride in 2012 brought together over 2,500 riders across 64 cities, and the success of the event encouraged the Founder to consider how it could be used to support a worthy cause. They all love their lawn bowls and all support the educational program, ‘A Start in Life’. Since its inception more than 90 years ago, ‘A Start in Life’ has supported more than 6,500 young Australians aged from 4 to 24 who’s circumstances have been described as living in crisis or living below the poverty line. Last Friday, the Kneelers and Grippers got together at the Tea Gardens Country Club to raise some money and to hear from the Charity’s, CEO Neil Robinson. “It’s a small Charity and each year it supports around 200 students with their education,” Neil told News Of The Area. “Our support can include helping with school fees, uniforms and making sure

The Search Party By Rachael VAUGHAN KICK the weekend, and for those of you who are parents, the school holidays, off right, with a night on the town at the Seabreeze Hotel. Grab a bite to eat, and stay for the entertainment with a true live Rock band, The Search Party on stage from 8:30pm. The Search Party is a Group of very
talented musicians from the industry drawn together to form a Band that takes the Live Rock act to another level. It’s live performance is what the Band holds most dear and from the opening song you will know why. Sheer power and energy has already got this Australian act booked at major venues from Sydney’s premiere live circuit through to
the Central Coast and up the eastern seaboard. The Band prides itself on its delivery of each of the songs they hand pick and play, and with the Band’s performance level and incredible light show it’s easy to see why there is such excitement levels for venues and their punters when the Band is booked to play. The Search Party simply delivers one of the best Rock shows that can be seen today and that’s easy to understand why when
all performers in the Band are in constant demand for session work with other acts around the country. The Seabreeze Hotel in Nelson Bay has all you need for a great night out. Great food, cold drinks, a beautiful view and the perfect entertainment to get the weekend started well.

By Margie TIERNEY IT’S been a busy time for the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest branch of the Red Cross, with 11 members visiting Forster recently for this year’s annual Zone Conference. The meeting was opened by Myall Lakes State MP Stephen Bromhead, and also attended by MidCoast Mayor David West. “The Guest Speaker before lunch was Eleanor Harris from Emergency Services Project and Support who gave an interesting overview of the structure of Red Cross Emergency Services and the necessity to be prepared for the summer ahead with survival readiness,” Helen Janes from the local Red Cross told News Of The Area. “Red Cross Regional Manager, Janelle Cazaubon, also answered questions and provided a comprehensive overview of Red Cross today and the aims and achievements of local branches.” “Another Guest Speaker, Norma Watson gave an interesting and emotional talk on her contact with the Fred Hollows Foundation and her trip to Kathmandu to witness the life changing work done there by the Foundation .” Specialists with the Fred Hollows Foundation travel the word restoring eyesight to those in need. After lunch it was time for some Awards and three Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Members were honoured. June Pollock received an Award for 30 years of service, while Terry Munright and Betty Carolan were recognised for their 10 years of service.

Dear Miss HG,
OPINION
A rewarding vocation Dear News Of The Area, IN light of the negative comments in the media of late about Aged Care establishments and employees, I just wanted to share a positive with you. Over 2 years ago when I had to give up sport because of back issues, I soon discovered that I needed something else
in my life, so decided to literally cross the road - from The Grange to Estia Health and speak to the staff, who were very helpful. I enquired about chatting to the residents, which I have to admit I am very good at chatting that is. I filled out the appropriate paperwork, and I was off - starting one afternoon a week quickly became 4 afternoons a week - the wonderful stories I have heard from the residents, their grateful smiles when I visit and have a chat with them. The staff are wonderful but they haven’t always the time to sit and listen. I come home every afternoon with a smile on my face. Estia have a little shop called “The hole in the wall” where Pat Burnett who is also a volunteer and I take turns twice a week selling chocolates and other goodies to the residents and every Friday we have a “Happy Hour” where we pour beers and wine and pass out nibblies. I decided to write this article as I find it such a rewarding experience and would love to encourage anyone in Tea Gardens who has some spare time to please consider volunteering.

I HAVE one word for you. Madonna. Madonna has been pulling off inappropriate fashion for more years than you’ve been alive. The older she gets, the more she pushes the limits. I sometimes high five Madonna’s confidence, but that doesn’t mean I want to emulate her. Since I’m closer in age to your mother than to you, I have some understanding of where your mum is sitting in the fashion stakes. There’s certain things I consider off limits for 50 year olds. The midriff, for example, should be a no-go zone. So too, should very, very short shorts. You know the ones. You probably own several pairs. They are so short that the pockets extend beyond the shorts. Now they do look okay on waifs when teamed with Doc Martins, but I’ve yet to see them work on someone of your mother’s vintage. Not that they don’t try, mind you. And who are we to judge? The bikini is another item that takes some consideration when you reach a certain age. They can look fine in low light or teamed with a sarong, but they rarely look great in broad daylight or after being dumped by a wave, or a husband. In both these cases, the bikini looks a bit ‘try hard’. Having said all of that, many women who are well over 50 can pull off a whole wardrobe of dubious items, and do it with great flair. When you get to a certain age, you tend to care far less about what people think. That is the stage your mum has reached. The positive is that you now have double the number of clothes to choose from. Just see it as a win-win. Alternatively, when she calls you in the street, give her a ‘do I know you?’ expression and run as fast as your skin-tight pleather skirt will allow. She’ll never catch you. The mind may be willing, but those disco knees will be well and truly shot on the home straight. Carpe diem, Jasminda

“A Start in Life” Charity Day Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 19 September Great spring weather enticed 56 players to enjoy Wednesday Nominated Triples today. Visitors were welcomed from Lake Cathie and Umina bowling clubs. The new format for selecting winners now seems to have gained favouritism with the second game being selected to determine the winners. The drop of the ball decided that the team of Ray Prigg, Pip Sullivan and Greg Pearson, from rink 3, and the team of; John Bilby, Dave Benson and Brian Emmett, on rink 10, walked away
with the trophies. The much sought after Myall Bistro voucher was won by Graham Watkins. Members welcomed two new bowlers to our club, Dave Benson, formerly from Karuah, and Michael Parker ex Pymble BC. Great to have them! 21 September Well it was touted as the annual “Kneelers” versus “Grippers” trophy challenge but it was far more than that in the end. It was actually a fundraiser for one of our Club’s favourite charities, “A Start In Life” which provides the resources to ensure financially disadvantaged children from our area have an equal opportunity at receiving a good education
from primary school through to University. Club members were joined by the Lake Cathie visiting bowlers and two greens were needed to accommodate all the players. The day was a wonderful success with the Club “punching above its’ weight’ again. A remarkable $3,000.00 was raised for our kids. Brilliant effort everyone! Incidentally, I’m told that the “Kneelers” won the trophy, but as there was no audit, I have my doubts. 22 September Our bowling friends from Lake Cathie were joined by Club members today for a “friendly” game on the synthetic green. Prizes were awarded to

q Gold Medal winners of the “A Start in Life” charity day. Ross Barry, Start in Life CEO, Neil Robinson, Marilyn Dewson and Gary Wynne. all in sundry and it would be fair to state that everyone had a great time and that the game of lawn bowls was definitely the winner. 23 September Sunday bowlers enjoyed a game of Fours on the grass green today with 16 players attending. Today we welcomed 4 new visitors who experienced their first game
of bowls and for two of them their first taste of success. Visitors Christopher and Maggie combined with Bev Dunn and skipper Dot Montgomery to come up trumps on 56 points. Thanks to everyone who participated to make for an enjoyable morning. As it is the holiday weekend next week, there will be no Sunday bowls.
In other news: There are still a few vacancies for the Palm Lake Open Mixed Pairs scheduled for 13/14 October but I would advise that players need to enter soon to ensure a start. Nominations are required for the annual Oncology Day to be held on Friday 19 October.
