uncompetitive. In addition, it was estimated that 20 per cent of trainers engage in live baiting. Mr Baird said the “NSW Government was acting to protect animal welfare as a priority.” Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead did not attend the meeting in Taree. It has been reported that Mr Bromhead has refused to meet with any trainer or owner before 5 August, several days after Premier Mike Baird is expected to introduce the legislation banning the industry. Ms Washington said Mr Bromhead needs to let his community know where

he stands on this issue. “If he backs Baird’s ban of the industry, he should just say it,” she said. “He should at least show the greyhound breeders, owners and trainers some respect, by listening to their concerns. I’ve listened, and I know that the loss of this industry will not only see locals losing jobs and livelihoods, they’ll also lose their way of life,” Ms Washington said. Mr Bromhead told News Of The Area he was not invited to the Taree meeting until Friday afternoon on 15 July. “I am sure you can appreciate my diary is booked well in advance,” he said. “My office called the

Taree Greyhound Breeders and Trainers Association Co-ordinator George Hanson, confirmed Mr Bromhead had invited himself and other representatives to meet on 5 August.

Celebrating 100 Years of Lions THE Tea Gardens Lions Club celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Lions International at their recent changeover. In the last 12 months Lions have donated in excess of $20m to its eye health, measles and rubella vaccinations and

“I reckon it’ll be all done and dusted in Parliament by then. What’s the point of having a meeting after the law has been passed?” Mr Hanson said. “We want Stephen to understand the impact this is going to have on our community…that you don’t close an industry, you fix it.” Mr Bromhead said the NSW Government has committed to significant industry support for those affected by the closure. “If the change is to go ahead, every cent raised from tax on greyhound racing from now until 1 July 2017 will go towards that support package,” Mr Bromhead told News Of The Area.

JULY 29 JOHN NOBLE FRED DAVIS AUG 5 AUG 12 PLAI STATION Come in and see what’s new

KARUAH Rural Fire Service (RFS) members are battling a storm of their own, being forced to work in substandard conditions in a shed that is falling apart. Despite the station being listed for ‘priority replacement,” the local volunteer organisation will need to wait at least four years for a new shed. Port Stephens MP Kate Washington and Shadow Minister for Emergency Services Guy Zangari viewed the extent of the damage at the facility last week. Karuah RFS Acting Captain Ken Smee reported an extensive list of issues including flood damage, structural cracks and inadequate facilities to cater for

their male and female members. Mr Smee told News of the Area he fears the building could collapse before the repairs are made. “The entire station flooded during last year’s storms,” he said. “There was already structural damage to the walls, but now they’re standing alone.” The walls and windows are currently propped up with lengths of timber, a drainage gutter constructed from plastic has broken under the weight of the trucks and a bookcase stands on top of bricks to prevent further water damage. There is no wash basin, only one toilet for the 20 volunteer members and one shower with cold water only. Due to lack of space, the

amenity area is also used for storage. Mr Smee said regulations require separate facilities for both males and females. “We can’t shut the door to the back area due to the damage, so female members don’t have any privacy when getting changed,” he told News of the Area. Mr Smee said there was a real need for a replacement shed, “but it keeps getting put off.” The Department for Emergency Services confirmed that it is spending minimal funds on maintenance at the site due to its planned upgrade, despite the fact that the upgrade is possibly four years away. Ms Washington said the extent of the damage is hampering the efforts of the volunteer members.

“It is outrageous that the Minister would expect local firefighters to work in deteriorating conditions, with no relief in sight until possibly 2020,” Ms Washington said. “Why has Karuah Fire Station been allowed to crumble while other areas get new stations?” Mr Zangari said, “The Department appears to have delayed this project by at least two years, but failed to explain that decision to local fire fighters.” “Karuah Fire Station is not a large building. There is no reason that this upgrade can’t occur sooner,” he said. Ms Washington is calling on the Minister to intervene and see that Karuah Fire Station gets the “priority” that the Baird Government admits it needs.

Gillespie takes the Ministry PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull last week announced the appointment of Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie to the Coalition Government Ministry. Dr Gillespie has been appointed as the Assistant Minister for Rural Health and has been sworn in at Government House.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank both the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister for the confidence they have placed in me,” Dr Gillespie said. “As most people would be aware I have a long history working in medicine and health administration, and I look

forward to using my extensive background and knowledge in the health sector to support the government’s policy agenda.” Dr Gillespie also thanked the people of Lyne for their strong support. “Without the support of my electorate, this opportunity to serve as a Minister would not be

possible, and so I look forward to serving them in this role as well as the important role of Local Member,” Dr Gillespie said. “While I have already had a brief discussion with the Health Minister Susan Ley today, I will be meeting with her again this week to discuss and determine my ministerial responsibilities.”

In Richardson the initial damages award was $18,000.00; increased to $130,000.00 on appeal. The Victorian decision shows that Richardson was by no means the upper limit of what Courts might award for proven sexual harassment. The case is a salutary warning, to employers in particular, that if their employees sexually harass co-workers, the business enterprise might end up being subject to very significant damages: Collins v Smith (Human Rights) [2015] VCAT 1992.

By Daniel SAHYOUN THE Bulahdelah Community turned out in force to show their support for the Great Lakes Women’s Shelter at a Christmas in July fundraiser last weekend. Christmas trees, bonbons, tinsel and a life-sized inflatable Santa greeted the mass of revellers as they arrived for the festivities at Bulahdelah Bowling Club. The Olde Time Rock and Roll

band pumped out the golden hits as the guests merrily mingled, carolled, kicked-up their heels and danced the night away. Spirits were bright as the constant sound of jingling coins flooded donation jars. The charity event was organised by the Great Lakes Women’s Shelter (GLWS) Fundraising Committee in conjunction with Bulahdelah Bowling Club.

The GLWS opened in January this year and has two refuges for women escaping domestic violence and abuse. GLWS President Julie Brady said their service was in high demand. “While the MidCoast District has the oldest demographic, it also has third highest level of domestic violence in NSW, which is daunting,” Ms Brady said. “Within two weeks of

opening, the centre was at full capacity.” Unlike other women’s shelters, the Great Lakes facility allows women to bring their children with them where they can stay in safety for as long as they need. The women are provided with counselling and are also taught life skills and anything else needed for them to reach independence. Ms Brady said in order to

consistent approach to planning and growth as well as improved management of the diverse natural environment across the new MidCoast Council area," said Lisa. "This will give confidence to our community in relation to investment and ensuring that our unique natural assets are secured for future generations. I look forward to robust discussion with our community as we set our strategic direction." Mr Paul De Szell will

head Community Spaces and Services and is looking forward to the development of this new division, which is different in structure to any of the previous Council structures. Paul was previously employed by Greater Taree City Council as the Executive Leader of Service Delivery and has 19 years' experience in NSW local government. Paul said, “Community Spaces and Services brings together a comprehensive range of service provision

areas that directly affect our community. "My focus will be to work with the community and my teams to deliver reliable, high-quality services to residents across the entire MidCoast region, and to ensure these services continue to meet the needs of our community into the future.” Mr Steve Embry will lead Corporate and Business Systems, another division that has been developed to meet the unique needs of

break the cycle of domestic violence and abuse, it is important to start teaching children about it. “Coming from a home where domestic violence occurs also means kids get stuck in the cycle, they witness and are victims of it,” Ms Brady told News Of The Area. “The cycle can start through teasing and bullying of other people at school, we need to teach children that they can say

no and even small things like this are just not on.” The GLWS is funded through the Women’s Community Shelters Organisation, Forster and Tuncurry Bowling Clubs, donations and community fundraising nights. The Christmas in July Cabaret Night was one of five functions to be held throughout the region. The next fundraising evening will be held in Hawks Nest on 3 September.

Systems, a role she has previously undertaken for the past five years at Great Lakes Council. Lisa brings to MidCoast a strong background in planning and natural resource management, commencing her career in local government in the early 1980s and working in this field across two States. "We now have an opportunity to have a

MidCoast Council within a complex future business environment. Previously employed for 12 years at Great Lakes Council in the role of Director of Corporate and Community Services, Steve will be working to establish modern business systems to support sound decision-making across Council's operations and the delivery of customerfocussed services. "I will be working with our team to set up business systems for the new Council

to ensure the delivery of excellent customer-focused services," said Steve, who has 36 years of experience in local government. Administrator Mr John Turner said, "I congratulate Lisa Schiff, Ron Hartley, Steve Embry and Paul De Szell on their appointments and am very confident they will work together with Glenn Handford to make MidCoast Council a great success."

Christmas in July at North Arm Cove

By Rachael VAUGHAN

WHEN North Arm Cove residents celebrate, they celebrate in style. This year’s Christmas in July dinner was no exception, and the residents were treated to a fine spread. North Arm Cove resident, Jan Noake, told News Of The Area, “This has been such a lovely evening, the food was fantastic as usual and the wonderful company even better. We are lucky to live in a small town where the residents regularly catch

up and celebrate evenings like this together.” North Arm Cove is a small hamlet of residents, who pride themselves on their achievements together, and their ability to work together as a community. And rightly so. They offer a busy social calendar for residents, including theatre evenings, fundraisers and theme nights. host school functions and represent the school in the wider community. Girls Captain Kaitlyn Gregory said she was “’surprised” when the captains were announced as she “wasn’t confident of gaining a position.” “I am proud to be part of a team who have been trusted with the responsibility of representing all the students in the school,” Kaitlyn said. “I look forward to working with both the students and staff productively in what I hope will be a successful year for the school and the student body.” Vice-Captain Tom Locke said he was looking forward to the challenges the position will bring. “I nominated for Captain because I wanted to have a say in decisions that affect all students in the school and it’s a big responsibility being a role model for younger students,” he said. “It will be challenging keeping on top of my school work and other commitments in addition to the new responsibilities.” The selection process involved writing an

leadership team. As part of their role, the young leaders will manage weekly assemblies,

application, a formal interview with the Senior School Executive and making a public speech. Points were awarded for each component of the process with the staff and students votes contributing to 50 percent of the final score. Points were also allocated for behaviour and participation within the school community over the past 18 months. Deputy Principal Mrs Deb Gilbert said the nomination process was introduced at the school to acknowledge hardworking and achieving students rather than the process being viewed as a popularity contest. The new school leaders will hold their positions until the end of term 2, 2017 allowing them to focus on their HSC studies during their final school term.

Pokémon craze hits Myall Coast

q PLAYERS: Cooper Carloff from Pindimar, Jett Krohn from Tea Gardens and Brandon Price from Hawks Nest on the hunt for Pokémon’s. By Daniel SAHYOUN POKE-MANIA has hit the Myall Coast with local residents exploring the region’s streets, parks and other sites to capture the little critters with their mobile phones. Large groups of Pokémon

hunters are regularly seen congregating in known PokeStops including Myall Quays Shopping Centre, Bulahdelah Cemetery and Mountain Park. Pokémon Go was launched this month and has quickly become the latest worldwide popular gaming sensation.

q PLAYERS: Olivia Magee-Scannell and Holly Towers from Bulahdelah with Abby-Jo Banks from Tea Gardens.

Players use their mobile phone’s GPS and camera to locate the virtual creatures in real-life locations before throwing Pokeballs to capture them. The Pokémon craze is already having significant health benefits for Myall Coast residents.

Players have to get outside and walk to catch the monsters, hatch the Pokemon eggs and reach PokeStops to replenish their stocks. A group of local teenagers told News of the Area they are now walking up to 10 kilometres a day in their hunt for Pokémon’s.

The game contains a screen message asking users to be careful, however there are reports of people sustaining injuries and entering backyards of strangers in their quest to find the elusive Pokémon. Senior Constable Trevor McLeod from Bulahdelah

Police, offers a friendly "word of warning to those who are involved with chasing Zubat, Pidgey or whoever.” “Don’t let your quest to capture these monsters impede on your normal rational thinking,” he said. With the temptation to keep track of the Pokemons while out in the car, Sn Constable McLeod warns, “the use of mobile phone handsets when driving is an offence under Section 300 of the Road Rules.” This breech of the law carries a fine of up to $433. Sn Constable McLeod also warns Pokémon hunters “not to blindly chase the little monsters onto private property.” “An excuse of ‘I was on the tail of Voltorb’ may not wash when the police are called to someone who has trespassed onto another person’s property,” he said. Sn Constable McLeod asks everyone to, “Please enjoy the chase, but know the limits."

Road to remain open Tech Savvy NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) is expected to make a decision on the relocation of Mungo Brush Road in Myall Lakes National Park within the coming weeks. The Review of Environmental Factors (REF) sought public comment on the proposal to retain ongoing road access by relocating a section of Mungo Brush Road affected by mobile sand. A NPWS Spokesperson said a total of 19 submissions were received. “These are now being considered and a Determination decision on the REF and submissions report is expected in August,” they said. The NPWS spokesperson told

News of the Area there are, “no plans to close Mungo Brush Road.” The proposed relocation of the 3.2 kilometre section is due to inland movement of sand from Dark Point dunes. Without intervention, sand is expected to start and bury Mungo Brush Road within two years. The relocation of the road out of the path of the Dune will allow continued access to the park while protecting the environmental, coastal and cultural values of the area. NPWS will continue to consult with stakeholders and community representatives.

Opinion & Letters

Hodges reports from France Dear News Of The Area,

q BUSTERS: Bitou Busters’ Adrienne Ingram and Jill Madden working in Winda Woppa, Hawks Nest.

This plant is a real killer

THE name “mother-ofmillions” may conjure up images of comfort and caring, but this red-flowered ornamental plant is a real killer. Not only is it poisonous to people and pets, but it constitutes a serious risk to stock, as poisoned cattle die of heart failure. The toxins are present in all parts of the plant, though the red, bell-shaped flowers are five times more poisonous than the leaves and stems. Mother-of-millions are in flower now, through to October. In one sense, motherof-millions is a very apt name for this Class 4 Noxious Weed. Each plant

can produce hundreds of seeds that can survive in the soil for a number of years. The plants reproduce from seeds, leaf, stems and root fragments. When the fragments fall to the ground - dropped during control efforts or spread via mowing or slashing - they put down roots and re-establish as new plants. As a Class 4 Noxious Weed in the Mid Coast area, the plant must be managed to continuously stop its ability to spread. It must not be sold, propagated or knowingly distributed. To control mother-ofmillions, it is best to handpull plants, using gloves. All plant parts should be bagged

and placed in the red bin. Although individual plants are easy to remove, infestations are difficult to control due to the ability of all plant parts left behind to re-shoot. Follow-up weeding is a must, as seeds and dropped plant parts will otherwise quickly re-infest the site. Once removed, the infested area should be revegetated with more desirable plants to provide competition to future mother-of-millions seedlings and plantlets. If it is in your garden perhaps think about planting Australian natives such as Christmas Bell, Midgen Berry, and Westringia.

AFTER another very successful weekend of fun, food and all things French at Tillermans in Tea Gardens on 8th, 9th and 10th July that saw almost 200 francophiles pass through the doors, Kerry and I were looking forward to a well-earned break back in our adopted village of Sigoulès in south-west France. We arrived in Bordeaux just after midnight on July 14th, Bastille Day, to the disturbing news of yet another terrorist attack, this time in Nice, where there were over 80 victims. We drove home and grabbed a few hours’ sleep before embarking on our mission to help set up the village for the 41st annual wine festival. Apart from a few directions on where to place the tables and chairs and how to set up the various stalls, there was not not the

THE Myall Lakes Aquatic Club (MLAC) held its mid winter outing on 16-17 July at Legges.

Most members travelled up on Friday as we planned to have a lunch time meal at Leggey’s Restaurant. 35 members and guests enjoyed this meal in pleasant weather overlooking the

lake. After lunch our local historian Jan Winn gave an informative talk on the history of the Myall River and Lakes. It was interesting to note that many of our members/ guests at the talk are descendants of local pioneer families namely - Legge, Motum, Palmer, Ripley. On Sunday, 6 boats and 15 people motored up to Violet Hill for an inspection

lives. This time 400 voices filled the village square with the Marseillaise. Saturday night was cabaret night. The entertainer’s routine was full of political inuendos. The final number was a famous piece whose chorus had been changed to C’est notre France (This is our France). 2000 people rose as one to sing the Marseillaise as I have never heard it sung before. In fact, I had tears in my eyes. France is a proud country but its citizens are angry. Australians should be angry too because any attack on France is an attack on the fundamental Australian values of free-thinking and liberty.

usual level of frivolity. In fact, it was very quiet. However, at the volunteers’ dinner organized by the Mairie on Friday night, the conversation became quite animated, the subject obviously centring around the attacks of the night before. The lady sitting next to me was the wine festival coordinator and well-respected local politician. I have known Josie for 8 years and have never seen her so angry. Unprompted, 40 people stood to attention and proudly sang the Marseillaise. The festivities organized for the following morning had been culled in accordance with the presidential decree of 3 days’ national mourning. Instead of jazz bands, jugglers and acrobats, a solemn official party, including Kerry and myself, made our way to the war memorial to lay a wreath for those who had just lost their

A FEW rain spots did not dampen the enthusiasm of those of us who headed down to Newcastle to walk from Nobby’s Beach along the coast to Merewether last Thursday. There are few cities blessed with such a magnificent natural setting and it is gratifying to see that the much hyped beautification of Newcastle seems to be picking up pace. Coal and heavy industry have been a blessing and a curse to the area. Whilst providing much needed employment and economic opportunities, one can’t help wondering

if the price paid by the environment and long time residents of the area has been too high. BHP gone but not forgotten, and not always in a positive way. Our group found four hour free parking at Nobby’s beach and walked along the beach path past the heritage listed Newcastle Ocean Baths. Not only a great place for a quick dip but also THE place to sample a Pluto pup. If you have never tasted one it is probably best you don’t start now. beach, Bar Beach, Dixon Park to arrive in time for lunch at Merewether Ocean Baths. Part of the walk took in the spectacular Newcastle’s Memorial Walk which has a personal connection for thousands of locals. The walk was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli in 1915 and the commencement of steel making in Newcastle; it acts as a magnificent memorial to the men and women of the Hunter who served their community and their country. Triples in action

q

TEAM: Sean Mearrick, Richard Lee and Paul Syron.

BOWLS Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club BY the JAFFA 20 JULY. A steady drizzle put paid to any Wednesday Nominated Triples today. 22 July. After the great introduction to an “open” format for Friday Jackpot Pairs last week, only 12 bowlers chose to play today in nice warm conditions. Surprising! I believe some bowlers are away and the lady bowlers are still completing their Club Championship Fours. This may have contributed to the poor field. The winners on the lowest margin were; Dale Winter and Graeme Watkins. The jackpot was not won and will now stand at $420.00 for next week. A semi-final round of the Club Triples Championship was played today with the team of; Bob Skewes, Ray Sullivan and Mark Hair taking advantage of the great conditions to play; Richard Lee, Paul Syron and Sean Mearrick. In their previous round the Mark Hair team overcame some very stiff opposition to reach the semi-final.

They disposed of the strong Steve Pell unit 24-13 and it was felt that if they could retain that form they would be in with a chance against the fancied Sean Mearrick side. It was not to be! They went down 12-27. 23 July. Conditions were atrocious for bowls today with the second semifinal of the Club Triples Championship being played. Anthony Grant’s side which included Bruce Everitt and Col Amos, were opposed to Peter Gurney, Bob Weir and Alan Greenhalgh. With the conditions being what they were, this game did not reach any ‘dizzy’ heights. It was a hard slog for all the players and they deserve great credit it seeing the match through. Alan’s side securing a place in the final with a 25-16 win. 24 July: With the temperature hovering on a bracing 12 degrees today 26 hardy Sunday Introduction to Bowls players turned up to play. Good on them all! The winners on the day were; Bob Liubinskas, Kingsley Joliffe and Linda Richards. The lucky losers were; John Atherton, Denis Wilberforce and Frank Zumbo.

The Final of the Club Triples Championship was played today with; Richard Lee, Paul Syron and Sean Mearrick playing; Peter Gurney, Bob Weir and Alan Greenhalgh. This match was played in overcast and cold conditions with the only saving grace, no wind! Wearing the “underdog” tag was probably the Alan Greenhalgh team, however they did not play like underdogs picking up a 5 at the 10th end saw them close to within 4 of their opposition at the half-way mark. At the 19th end they had closed to be just one shot behind 21-22. Dropping a 4 at the penultimate end did not help their cause leaving them a massive 5 shots to make up on the last end to force the game into extra time. Notice of Adoption of Amended Great Lakes Development Control Plan (DCP)

As per clause 21 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation 2000, notice is given that on 13 July 2016 Council adopted an amended version of the Great Lakes DCP. The amended plan comes into force on the 27 July 2016. The changes to Section 12 of the DCP deal with tree and vegetation preservation. The amendments provide a simplified process for identifying when approval is needed to remove a tree or other vegetation in the mapped tree preservation areas. It also allows landowners greater flexibility in managing the landscaping of their property by expanding the criteria for when approval is not required. A full copy of the Great Lakes DCP can be accessed via Council’s website at: http://www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au Should you require any further information please contact Council’s Strategic Planning Section on 02 6591 7351. c NOTA Graphics - Ref: MCCO_280716 PO BOX 450 FORSTER NSW 2428
