campaign over ten years ago, the ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ raising money to support people living with blood cancer. This time she had helpers from the Peter Sinclair Gardens Aged Care Facility, where Linda also works. Fellow work colleague, Charlie Burns was given the honour of handling the clippers. And it didn’t take long for Linda’s locks to be lopped, although she did get to keep a small pony as a memento. “I’m feeling really good, it’s very liberating,” Linda said. The ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ has now been going for 21 years with over 200,000 people having either shaved or coloured their hair during that time to help blood cancer research. More than 12,000 Australians will develop Leukaemia, Lymphoma or Myeloma this year, that’s 35 people every day. Blood cancer claims the lives of more Australians than breast cancer or melanoma. Linda’s efforts last Friday raised over $500 for the Leukaemia Foundation, well worth the shave to add to the more than $11 million raised through the campaign.

but the Liberal National Coalition has won an historic third term for the first time in over 50 years. The Premier has spent a great deal of time in the Port Stephens region in the lead up to the Election and the win, which looks to see a majority Government, has made many promises. For Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead once again holds the seat. MP bromhead said, “What an incredible result! I’m feeling absolutely honoured and privileged. Thanks to my staff and all the volunteers who always work so hard, and also to my Wife Sue and our family.” “Thanks again for your incredible support,” he said. On the Port Stephens front, in conceding to Kate Washington, Liberal Candidate Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “Kate had an incumbency factor and has had four years in the seat. “I was always going to be the underdog but I’m proud that we were able to put Port Stephens into play in the seat. “The people of Port Stephens have only benefited from this,” Ms Abbott said. Bill Doran who ran as an Independent candidate said, “Firstly, may I congratulate Kate on a very decisive win. ”Secondly, I thank those individuals who voted for me and I apologise for not making a better showing or at least beating the Greens. “Now watch as the excuses start to flow

Artists on Display

By Margie TIERNEY

The Exhibition will comprise the works of four artists. Rudy Jacobs is the artist and organiser of the event and he’ll be joined by Jennifer Street, Joan Richards and Clare Yates. Jennifer Street is well known locally for her beautiful works in watercolour. “Since moving to Tea Gardens in 2014 to be closer to her parents, Jennifer’s love of art and nature has inspired her and her passion for watercolour shows in her technique and the intricate detail of her work,” Janette said. “Joan Richards is another well known local artist, who enjoys working with oil and has developed her own distinctive style that is instantly recognisable.” “Joan has been painting our beautiful

ACROSS the Myall region we are blessed with artists who create across a myriad of genres. We are also lucky to have a number of places where these artists can showcase their works. In the lead up to the Easter long weekend, a group of artists has been given the opportunity to display their works at the Tea Gardens Hotel. Janette Coppock from the Myall Art and and Craft group said, “This is the first of what is hoped to be a regular event, adding to the many and varied opportunities for locals and visitors alike to view, appreciate and purchase art works by local artists.”

Clare Yates works mostly in pencil and watercolour to create beautifully detailed work, drawing inspiration from her travels around Australia. Clare has lived in Tea Gardens for 10 years and is enjoying being part of a very active and supportive local art group. And finally, Rudy Jacobs is an oil painter who has been painting in earnest since retiring to Tea Gardens in 2017. His early works include scenes from inland Australia, but now he has turned his attention to the beautiful Myall area with beach and river scenes. The newest arrival to our local art community, Rudy is full of enthusiasm and is the driving force in this new Exhibition. The Exhibition, with at least one of the artists in attendance, will run from Sunday 14 April to Friday 19 April, between the hours of 10am to 5pm.

MAKE THE CALL ASK YOUR ENERGY COMPANY FOR A BETTER DEAL

Congratulations OPINION Dear News Of The Area,

As of January 1st, providers have dropped prices on their most expensively priced plans due to pressure from the Government. But if you really want to save, simply call your energy company and ask them for a better deal. You could lower your bill by $400 a year.

4 NEWS OF THE AREA MYALL COAST

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

CONGRATULATIONS to my Nationals State Parliamentary colleagues Melinda Pavey in Oxley, Leslie Williams in Port Macquarie, Stephen Bromhead in Myall Lakes and Michael Johnsen in Upper Hunter on being re-elected by the community in the NSW Parliament. Our Federal electorate overlaps with six state electorates and I have a good working relationship with all of our state MPs, including Kate Washington in Port Stephens and Jenny Aitchison in Maitland. There are some very exciting projects that NSW Nationals have earmarked over the next term in government and I am very much looking forward to working with my colleagues to help deliver them. In New South Wales, the Coalition has for the past eight years worked to pay back Labor’s debt and has now repaid that debt. They now have the capacity to significantly invest in a record infrastructure and services. In the five and half years the Coalition has been in office at the Federal level, we have been on a very similar journey in repairing the nation’s finances. Next month, we will deliver the first Federal Budget surplus since the John Howard era, while also delivering record investment in infrastructure, national security, health and education policy initiatives. There is still much more to be done and we must continue to be prudent in our management of the nation’s finances so that we can repay Labor’s debt and be able to afford to pay for the services and infrastructure the nation deserves. Dr David Gillespie, MP Federal Member for Lyne

The Addams Family THE curtains have closed on another successful musical, The Addams Family, for Bulahdelah Central School. Vanessa Shultz, Head Teacher for English said, “The sets and performers brought to life our usually drab school hall and transformed it into a graveyard and haunted house.” The Year 11 & 12 Drama class worked tirelessly for 3 months to recreate this memorable performance. The choir met twice a week, at lunchtime, to rehearse 15 songs ranging from the controversial Michael Jackson, to Abba, Pink and Taylor Swift.

“It has been delightful to watch this enormous choir learn tunes, lyrics and quirky choreography with soooooo much enthusiasm,” Ms Shultz said. “Our dance ensemble was our largest yet (35).” The audience area of the hall had to be reduced to accommodate the dancers energetic swing, contemporary and ballroom routines. The stage crew has worked together beautifully to ensure the sets turn, the lights captivate and the sound effects transport us into the world of The Addams Family. “They have demonstrated commitment, flexibility, initiative, creativity and ultimately, excellence. These skills are to be valued,” Ms Shultz said.

q Liam Garemyn - Liam lives in Bulahdelah in a large acting family (similar to the Addams).

q Molly Perry - The Amusing Molly graces the Bulahdelah stage for the first time in the role of crazy old Grandma Addams, from Markwell. Molly offered to give the role “a red, hot crack” with her grandma moves and humour.

q Hannah Pikkat Brumby 250 Trainer from Sydney with her Brumby Gypsy cooling off this summer.

By Marian SAMPSON THE Brumby 250 inaugural event will see the winner shine at the Stroud Show with the final freestyle event being held on 27 April. Four trainers were invited to participate in the event which trains Brumbies captured in Kosciuszko National Park. They have 250 days to turn these wonderful wild horses into working horses. Kathryn Massey of the Hunter Valley Brumby Association told News Of The Area, “The trainers had three days to get to know their horses before starting on their training programs.” The Brumby 250 Tournament sets the highest of animal welfare standards, therefore our trainers have been given 250 days to train their Brumbies during the summer. All the Brumbies chosen to participate in

the Brumby 250 were thoroughly examined by the Associations’ Veterinarian within two weeks of the start of the Competition. The final events are set for April 2019 beginning with a Working Equitation Competition at Stroud NSW where the trainers and Brumbies will not only compete amongst themselves but also with domestic horses and their riders, both National and International. “All our Brumbies and trainers will compete at the Stroud Show in both the ‘Led’ and ‘Ridden’ classes, finishing with a ‘Freestyle’ event performed to music on Saturday,” she said. The HVBA promotes Brumbies as a breed of choice, to improve popularity and showcase the breed to individuals and interested groups. The Brumby 250 is one way the Association is showcasing how capable Brumbies can be.

PENNANT Season began for our Grade 4 sides on Tuesday 19th March. Our Grade 4 Yellow side travelled to Merewether for their first game. Interestingly, Merewether has not entered a side in Pennant for 13 years, so this is a historical year for them. Our teams won in both their games gaining the magical 5 points, a good start for their season. The Grade 4 Blues bowled at Nelson Bay on a very heavy green without success. This side is comprised of a number of new bowlers plus this is the first time 4 of the ladies have ever played Pennant. It was a different story for them on Thursday 21st March when we had a home game. The Blues had a win against Edgeworth giving them 4 points and placing them 3rd in their section. The Yellow side defeated Lowlands adding another 5 points to their tally putting them in a good position in their section, remembering it’s early days yet. On Thursday, it was great to have so many supporters cheering/encouraging our bowlers you all did a great job in spurring us to victory. Thanks, Sandra Leisemann for Umpiring. Everyone has commented on our wonderful new shirts, many thanks to our Major Sponsor Mick Rumble, Principal First National Real Estate Hawks Nest for our new

shirts as well as your continuing sponsorship of our club. Our Grade 4 teams have a bye on Tuesday 26th and play at home on Thursday 28th. The Grade 2 Pennant side bowl their first game on the 2nd April at Soldiers Point. Social bowls continues as usual during the Pennant Season with an at home competition running. On Tuesday 19th, 2 games of 2 bowls Triples 18 ends. Robyn Beaumont, Deyonne Page and Lynne Green were leading 11 v 1 on the 6th end against Sandra Leisemann, Maynie Roberts and Pat Baker. Unfortunately Lynne’s team didn’t add to their score for the next 8 ends compared to the 14 shots that Pat’s ladies gained. The final result a win for Pat’s team 20 v 14. A close contest for Bev Rhodes, Dorothy Thompson and Bette Saillard 16 v Sheril Johnson, Jo Younghusband and Carol Hayden 14. The winners with a win plus shots and ends were Sandra, Maynie and Pat. Thursday 21st March: Two games 3 bowls Triples 12 ends. Trish Ward, Dorothy Thompson and Bette Saillard 13 v Bev Dunn, Jo Younghusband and Lynne Green 8. Liv Everingham, Bev Rhodes and Pat Baker defeated Margaret Wigman, Carolyn Bywater and Maynie Roberts 4. Birthday greetings to Bev Rhodes. The Semi Final of the Major Singles will be played on Tuesday 26th, March.

SITUATION

By Margie TIERNEY THERE’LL be no rest for young cricketers, James McCarthy and Tom Long over the offseason, the two boys from the Under 12’s Karuah Tea Gardens District Club having been selected in the Hunter Primary Schools Sports Association cricket side to play at the State Titles in Wollongong later this year. The journey to represent the Hunter wasn’t an easy one. “James, from Tea Gardens Public and Tom, from Karuah Public, originally played in the Port Stephens trial, before being selected to trial against 68 other youngsters from the Hunter,” Colin McCarthy said. “Both boys were then selected to trial in a game of the last 22 players and then went on to be selected in the Hunter team, of 12 players, to go onto the State Titles.” James was selected as a fast medium bowler and Tom as a leg spinner. James said, “I trialled last year and learnt a lot from it, so I was excited to hear my name called out.”

“I was hoping to do well and I’m really happy”, Tom said. Colin McCarthy, who’s Secretary/Treasurer of the Karuah Tea Gardens District Cricket Club Secretary/Treasurer, Colin McCarthy, said the club was ecstatic, “We are a small club, two kids into a Hunter team is sensational.” “We are very proud of the boys, both are handy cricketers”. Both boys will play trial games and train over the winter period with the Hunter team, coached by Colin Johnson, from Charlestown Public School, leading in to the State Titles during the week October 15 to 19.
