Training Ongoing for the Rural Fire

By Dave BRAZIER

FROM the official start of the Fire Season each year a dedicated number of volunteers are normally ready to drop everything and assist with a variety of tasks to help protect the community and environment. Whilst the warmer months are by far the busiest for these volunteers, training is continued all year round in an effort to ensure all members are kept up to date with procedures and operating equipment. The Pindimar –Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service have stations based at both Pindimar and Tea Gardens, with three valuable vehicles in the current fleet, and all with

very different operational capabilities. From troublesome Pile Burns, to Hazard and Controlled Burns to assisting NSW Fire and Rescue and NSW Police with everything from motor vehicle accidents and structure fires, keeping up to date with training is of paramount importance for all involved for the varied tasks undertaken. The Pindimar –Tea Gardens R.F.S crews hold on average four training sessions a month, with two evening sessions at Tea Gardens, and two morning sessions at Pindimar, with the most recent training day occurring at Pindimar on Sunday 26 June.

Karuah RSL foyer has a vast collection of residents bras destined for Fiji.

By Dave BRAZIER THERE is always something that puts a smile on my face at Karuah RSL when I pop in to see Ross Parr and the team. From happy faces at reception to smiling members, it’s a genuine drawcard for the area. And for so many reasons. I was recently however a little astonished to spot not one, but a dozen or so various sized and coloured bras being

suspended from the roof in the entrance foyer and thought, “What are they up to now?” with a quiet chuckle. Secretary Manager Ross Parr soon filled me in. “A member of Karuah RSL recently returned from Fiji where recent cyclones have left a devastating effect on so many people. One thing during that trip was the ongoing lack of the basics and for the ladies in particular they lacked even the basics

A MOTOR vehicle was set alight on the side of a road near Bulahdelah Golf Club on Sunday 19 June. The vehicle was found at about 9.30pm and was totally destroyed by the

fire. Bulahdelah Police report investigations and inquiries into the incident revealed the car had been stolen from Port Macquarie the previous

of comfort including ownership of bras,” Mr Parr told News Of The Area. ‘The idea was floated here to ask for donations of bras to send over to Fiji where they would be greatly appreciated. So we’re asking ladies to send their bras on a holiday to Fiji and help out those less fortunate than us,” he said. I must also mention the Clubs current major competition that is drawn on Sunday 25 September at 2pm.

‘Car – Cash – Holiday’ entries have started and offers the lucky First Prize winner a choice of a Mazda 3 Auto 6 speed Hatchback, or a Nissan Juke Series 2 CVT Wagon, or a Kia Cerato S Premium Auto Hatchback. Second Prize is equally as impressive and includes a $5000 travel voucher and there is also a bonus eight prizes of $500 cash. All details can be found at the club or online.

Ticket to Grand Final within reach By Dave BRAZIER

hilarious Memes depicting each States residents and players alleged ‘inadequacies’ in life. Football aside, it’s a time to reflect and have a laugh at ourselves and forget about the seriousness that life often throws at us. With the Origin now decided and heading towards a rather uninspiring third game in a few weeks, it’s getting down to the nitty gritty end of the regular season, and where most die hard ‘Tipsters’ really start crunching the numbers and stats to ensure they gain as many points they can with each regular round of NRL Games. News Of The Area launched

IT is with great sadness to report the already well known fact that NSW have again lost the annual NRL State of Origin series, falling short of victory against QLD on Wednesday 22 June by losing 2616 to a gutsy Maroon outfit. I’m personally not a massive NRL fan, I’m certainly not a ‘one eyed’ particular team supporter or anything like that, but what I do enjoy about Origin is the comical banter that has become so popular amongst mates from different States. Social Media platforms like Facebook ‘light up’ with often

their popular NRL Tipping Competition at the start of the season, and despite my best efforts, I am currently ranked 27th out of the 42 participants in this years competition, with a total of 70 points. The current leader on 79 points is ‘Ali 5’ who I’m guessing is not ready to start gloating, as just one point away is ‘AlexV’ on 78 points, closely followed by ‘9 OClock’ and ‘Dragonlover 1 Stanley’ who are each sharing 77 points. Gary Howlett who won the 2015 News Of The Area Tipping Comp was tremendously excited when he received tickets to the

2015 Grand Final. Mr Howlett said, “I just can’t seem to find the same form with tipping compared to last year.” “I’m still in contention this year though. I’m always looking at the results and statistics like I did last year but it’s been a bit harder.” “I’m currently sitting in 26th position on 70 points and with only a few weeks to go I better improve quickly to retain my title as top tipster,” he told News Of The Area. The winner of this years tipping comp will again receive two tickets to the NRL Grand Final, courtesy of your local News Of The Area.

Support person: If you need to bring a family member or friend to sit with you and provide support then this is sensible, but from time to time in matters of high emotion and conflict we have suggested to clients that their support person be someone other than a new partner. The presence of a new partner can take the focus away from resolution of family issues and not be helpful and cost effective.

New MidCoast Council gets to know community

q Local Representation Committee (LRC) member Carol McCaskie, Implementation Advisory Committee Member Len Roberts, Administrator John Turner, Committee Chairperson Jan McWilliams and LRC members Karen Hutchinson and Frank Hooke. By Daniel SAHYOUN MIDCOAST Council held a public information session in Tea Gardens last week to update the community on the progress of the merger. The meeting was attended by Administrator John Turner, Interim General Manager Glenn Handford, senior staff and committee members including Jan McWilliams and Len Roberts.

Mr Handford said Council was making the community a priority from the start. “There will be lots of community engagement during the transition process,” he said. “There will also be an emphasis on relationships with the State and Federal governments, as well as the community.” Mr Handford said although there were many

TWO young boys have attended Bulahdelah Police Station in relation to a break and enter at Bulahdelah Central School. The boys aged 10 and 12 entered the school and vandalised the staffroom over the weekend of 18-19 June. There was significant damage done to the floor coverings and other property in the staffroom

and a number of items were stolen. Bulahdelah Police report through investigation and communication with school staff they were able to identify the two young offenders. The boys will be spoken to further by Police. School Principal Mr Don Hudson told News Of The Area, “The students were being dealt with under the

uncertain features of the new MidCoast Council, “it was pretty much business as usual.” The newly formed Council has $1.4b in combined assets and a projected operating revenue of $155.4m. With an infrastructure backlog of $20.56m, Mr Handford said there was a real need for honest feedback about the situation.

Police have been asked to patrol the school grounds when possible.

“Council will attempt to chip away at the backlog using grants for specific projects such as roads which will help stem the shortfall,” he said. A budget shortfall is predicted for at least seven years and Mr Handford is hopeful the efficiencies that were made in the former Great Lakes Council could be carried over. "It's all about spending

money in the areas of greatest need and becoming efficient in various areas of operation," he said. MidCoast Council is already working for their communities and is planning storm season preparation works to be undertaken at Jimmy’s Beach and has also allocated $50,000 in funding for the Marine Drive Foreshore Reference Group. Questions raised by community members during the evening related to rates, local representation and funding. Speaking with News Of The Area, Administrator John Turner said the night was well attended and allowed the community to have their say.

“We want to do everything as seamlessly as possible, it is very early in the merger,” Mr Turner said. “We look forward to future meetings and will continue to have constructive discussions with questions put forward from the local communities.” Mr Turner said the community meeting was one of 10 information sessions be held throughout the MidCoast Council area. A similar meeting will be held in Bulahdelah on Tuesday 12 July at 6:00pm in the School of Arts hall. q SPEAKING: Glenn Handford, Interim General Manager of MidCoast Council.

Vehicle rolled

A FEMALE driver was taken to Manning Base Hospital with a suspected head injury after her car rolled on the Pacific Highway near Bulahdelah. The vehicle was reported to have been swerving over the road as it travelled southbound near the Bulahdelah exit at about 12.40pm on Saturday 18 June. The car then swerved harshly to the left and crossed a grassed area before verging onto the off ramp where it mounted an embankment and rolled. The car finally came to a rest on its wheels completely blocking the off ramp to the highway. Bulahdelah Police report the vehicle was driven by a female from the Newcastle area. Police investigations into the accident are continuing.

Funding boost for local projects announced

q FORESHORE: Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie discusses the proposed upgrades to the waterfront area in Tea Gardens. By Daniel SAHYOUN TWO community organisations in the Myall Coast area are set to benefit from a combined $75,000 boost in funding from Commonwealth Government grants. Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie visited the area last week to announce Bulahdelah Lions Club would receive $50,000 for an activity park and Tea Gardens

Dr

Marine Drive Foreshore Reference Group would receive $25,000 to improve the foreshore area. Bulahdelah Lions Club President Mr Arthur Baker said the construction of the community activity park would include skate and exercise facilities and a miniature road system to make the park user-friendly. “The bonus of the park is that everyone can enjoy it, toddlers, youth and senior

q UPGRADE: Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie announces funding for improvements to the Marine Drive Foreshore Area. said the $25,000 Federal Government grant allocated for improvements to the Tea Gardens Foreshore will be combined with a $50,000 contribution from MidCoastCouncil which was also announced last week. “We hope to be able to use this grant to improve the foreshore area, and also hope we can resume work on the foreshore amenities that we have already started,” Mr Grainger said.

“There is already a series of projects in waiting, including the construction of new shelters, the replacement of trees and the beautification of the Marine Drive roundabout.” Meeting with representatives of both groups last week, Dr Gillespie said he was pleased to provide funding for the projects which will significantly benefit the local communities.

“The grants are designed for improving facilities and upgrading existing ones and will definitely help improve the amenities in both Bulahdelah and Tea Gardens,” Dr Gillespie told News Of The Area. “It is important that these projects are built in our communities as they will help enhance the experiences that community members and tourists have in both areas.”

Rotary teaches young drivers life lessons By Daniel SAHYOUN ROTARY Clubs in the district celebrated the 6000th student to complete the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program last week. The RYDA Program has been conducted in the area for the past 14 years and encourages young drivers and passengers to devise strategies to allow them to make safe choices on the roads. The program is led by Rotary volunteers, Police, driving instructors and people directly affected by road accidents. Practical demonstrations allow students to witness braking distances in relation to speed and also the effect of distractions while driving. Students from Bulahdelah Central School attended the program last week. Year 11 student Kaitlyn Gregory said the session presented by accident survivor Tod Green and his mother Sue was very moving. “This showed the reality of how accidents on the roads can happen to anyone at any time,” she said. “Sue’s emotional talk highlighted the ripple effect as even though it was Tod going through years of rehabilitation, his family experienced every part of it along

with him.” Bailey Shultz said he learnt a lot from the session presented by Senior Constable David Russell relating to responsibilities of young drivers. “He spoke about many things that I can get in trouble for when driving that I didn’t know about,” Bailey said. “The real life scenarios presented were full-on in showing the impact that making bad decisions on the roads can have on your family.” Bulahdelah Central School students are fortunate to have the support of the Myall Coast Rotary Club who fully fund the annual cost of transporting the young drivers to the event. Club members Ian MackenzieSmith, Rob Baker and Graeme Dunn participated in the sessions with the students during the day. With a passion for Rotary Youth Programs, Mr Mackenzie-Smith said he was pleased to be involved with such a worthwhile Rotary initiative. “Rotary offers 12 different youth programs and this is one of the best because it saves lives,” he said. “If we only save one life, then the whole program has been worth it.” Since the RYDA program started, the number of serious motor accidents involving young drivers in the area has significantly reduced.

and injustice for our Aboriginal communities needs addressing urgently. It is clear that each community values the social and economic rights of all Australians, with affordable and accessible housing, healthcare, education, decent working conditions, transport

and NBN access. People want real action on global warming, with the resulting thousands of new renewable energy jobs. (greens.org.au) Vote 1 Julie Lyford Greens for a compassionate and confident Australia.

MY family have been holidaying at Hawkes Nest and surrounding areas for over 30 years. We love the natural beauty and welcoming communities. I have recently visited and held community conversations in North Arm Cove, Karuah, Tea Gardens, Hawkes Nest, Coomba Park, Pacific Palms, Elizabeth Beach, Nabiac, Forster and Tuncurry. The ‘Conversations for change’ sessions discussed poor internet (NBN) and mobile phone coverage, undemocratic council amalgamations, the emergency of climate change, ‘dying with dignity’, taxation reform, CSG and coal mining to name a few. People are concerned about aged care funding and specialised nursing, the future of access to hospitals and the privatisation of Medicare and other fundamental public good programs. Questions were voiced about employment for young people, with emphasis towards restoration of a fully funded TAFE and training q Greens Candidate for Lyne Julie Lyford with Joyce Taylor at pathways. Why should I vote for the Citizens Electoral Council (CEC)? In this election, two issues subsume all others, which the CEC alone is addressing: • the deepening economic crisis in Australia and the world; • the danger of Australia being drawn into a war with China and Russia. Australia has record foreign and household debt; we are losing our productive industries, such as car and steel manufacturing; real unemployment is at least 11 per cent; and our banking system faces wipe out when the property bubble inevitably crashes. The global financial system is a powder keg of bad debt, which underlies the very real threat of WWIII as the same US and British decision makers who committed us to the regime change fiascos in Iraq, Libya and Syria that created ISIS, are now escalating against China, Russia and their BRICS partners. For 28 years the CEC has fought as an independent political party for the principles of

the common good and national sovereignty, in economic and foreign policy, which are needed today. We have fought to free Australia from the Crown-City of London-Wall Street apparatus of banks and multinational corporations, which seized control of our economy under the policies of deregulation and privatisation that the Hawke-Keating ALP started, and the Liberals continued. We have fought for economic development using a national bank to invest in large-scale water, power and transport infrastructure projects, in order to expand our agriculture and manufacturing industries and create hundreds of thousands of productive jobs. If you support these ideas—if you want Australia to be a productive agro-industrial economy with affordable housing and full time jobs for all, if you agree that war with China and Russia is insane—vote for the CEC.

A small group of avid darters took to the boards for a night of mixed doubles competition. The mixed doubles winners for the night were Michael Russom and Marion Smith. They won from a play off against mixed doubles

With the game in the balance with minutes remaining, taylah Cooke sealed the Hawks victory with a length of the field try. Others to score were Linda Braddick and Ariana Teraki while Teegan Barr scored two. Montanna Gessey kicked 3 goals from 5 attempts. The Lady Hawks play Morrisett next Saturday at Myall Park. Kick off will be at 2pm. On Saturday the “JR Richards” Myall River 15’s defeated Newcastle Wests by 18 points to ten at Myall Park. In a hard fought match, Myall River led all the way, on the back of half back Will Smith’s directional play. Smith had the ball on a string and was part of the three tries. Tom Lidbury had a strong game at five eigth, while centres Bradley Marshall and Jreaytaine Davis enjoyed the service from the halves. Up from, Ryan O’Neill was heavily involved, while KyeCotterill was aggressive at lock. Reefe Lesley was in the heavy work, and Aiden Hawkins work rate was high. Bradley Marshall scored two tries, and Tommy

Best for Myall River was Dylan Long, who scored two individual tries. Mitchell Barr scored one from fullback. Angus Devon kicked 2 goals and Nathan Katz one. The 13’s have a bye next week. The “Tea Gardens Masonic Centre” 11’s travelled to Nelson Bay to record a hard fought win. An anomaly in the draw saw them play the Bay for a second time at home. The “Tea Gardens Fencing” 8’s had their home game against Nelson Bay transferred to Malabullain another disappointing scheduling. As a team, they took it in their stride to play a strong game. The boys more than matched Nelson Bay’s try scoring, in the freezing conditions. The 8’s travel away on Saturday before a 2 week school holiday break.
