Special Friends’ Day ON Friday, 2 November, the Primary faculty hosted Bulahdelah Central School’s annual Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day. This year, the decision was made to hold this celebration later in the year to better coincide with National Grandparent’s Day which was Sunday, 28 October. Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day celebrated the role Grandparents and older people play in our society – both things they have done, and the things they keep doing. Each class showcased an item and the K/1/2 classes decorated the hall with their artworks dedicated to their Grandparents and Special Friends. Talented performers then

enjoyed fruit platters and their lunchtime with their special guests. Thanks and appreciation go out to all staff and students who were involved in the organisation of the celebration. The School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs) who helped throughout the day, the P&C members who contributed various yummy treats and assisted with the catering set up. Hayley Nicholson - Relieving Assistant Principal said, “Also, a big thank you to our special guests who made the entire day worthwhile. We valued your presence on the day and look forward to celebrating the special people in our students’ lives again next year.”

A recent case in the Supreme Court involved legal effort and expense when circumstances changed even in a situation when the will-maker had tried to accommodate the possibility of change. The will-maker left money to charity for breast and prostate cancer research. His gift chose a particular trust and stated that if it “ceased to exist” at the time of his death, his executor could choose a similar charity (“cy pres” clause). 8 years before his death, a Judge had found that the trust selected was no longer suitable and had

ordered that a new trust be established and the proceeds of the trust be paid into the new trust. The executor was not sure, therefore, if the trust had “ceased to exist” or not. The executor sought judicial advice. The Judge held that in the circumstances of the case the trust had “ceased to exist” and that the executor could pay the gift to the Garvan Institute, a charity which agreed to use the money only for breast and prostate cancer. The case demonstrates the importance of keeping a Will up to date and the need to carefully choose words when drafting a Will. LOCALS and visitors to Winda Woppa are being asked to be mindful following the return of the Little Tern for their annual breeding season. “A number of birds in full breeding plumage, have arrived at the Winda Woppa sand spit and commenced their courting rituals, offering fish to potential partners and excavating nesting scrapes as they establish breeding pairs,” Neil Fraser said. “Based on the last two year’s records, they

Weekend of Fire By Rachael VAUGHAN

A DUST storm, howling winds, road closures, families kept apart, a small amount of land property lost and the prevailing courage of many, many firefighters is the story of the Campfire/Salt Ash fire that threatened many during the last week. A fire also sprung up at 12 Mile Creek just before Karuah. At time of writing, the fire has burnt through 1969 hectares, after starting in an area north of the Williamtown RAAF Base and located on Richardson Road. With howling West South Westerly winds that were in excess of 60km/h, with gusts over 80km/h, the local crews of the NSW Rural Fire Rural took to it knowing that the situation could get out of hand very quickly. And then it did.

In next to no time, the fire advice level increased from the “Advice” level to “Watch and Act” and then eventually “Emergency” as winds increased and took control of the fire. Local residents saw road after road close in quick succession, causing traffic chaos and stopping loved ones from returning home from work, and even worse, children unable to find a way home from school. Richardson Road had been closed initially between Medowie Road and Grahamstown Road, but then Medowie Road was closed between Ferodale Road in the north and Nelson Bay Road in the south. Not long after, the people of Nelson Bay and surrounds were cut off when Nelson Bay Road was closed at Paul’s Corner. Lemon Tree Passage Road

followed shortly after, leaving even more people isolated. Once again, the local community came together in the face of crisis. Our firefighters were

looked after with food and drink with donation after donation finding their way to men and women (and one former Prime Minister) on the front line. Irrawang High School became an emergency evacuation centre taking in students from various schools around the area who were

unable to make it home due to the road closures. The Salvation Army lept into action to feed the stranded students and teachers, and Hunter Valley Buses and Port Stephens Coaches eventually got them home safely when Nelson Bay Road and Lemon Tree Passage Road were

temporarily re-opened. With the help of several firefighting planes and helicopters, including the Boeing 737 Gaia air tanker, and the much calmer conditions, our firefighters were able to get the upper hand on the blaze. Spectacular scenes at Pacific Dunes saw families able to shake off the worry of the spreading fire, and enjoy the excitement of watching these magnificent aircraft collect water from the ponds and waterways of the golf course to returning over and over to refill and head off again to douse the flames. Yes, there were some land property losses, but there are many more stories of near misses and of course the most important of all, no lives were lost. It was a tough situation for many, but once again, our community came through. Thank you to all our firefighters and support crew for all you do to keep us safe.

Karuah Rooette’s League By Sonja EVANS ON Saturday the Karuah Rooette’s travelled to Berkeley Vale for the finals of the CRL 9s Hunter & Coast Rugby League competition. Finishing in 4th position they were up against minor premier’s University for a spot in the grand final. The opening stages were extremely intense with Kayla Campbell damaging the opposition with strong defence and hard running. University’s attack was sharp, scoring the first try and converting to lead 6/0 at halftime. Karuah adjusted their defence and started the second half with determined running from Ashley Bills, Casey O’Bryan and Jess Neilson. Ebony Oakley capitalised on an opportunity scoring from dummy half taking the score to 6-4. An inspirational effort from Rooette’s captain Lacey Beneke playing with a preexisting injury went close to scoring however copped a heavy head injury but managed to drag herself off the field giving the Rooette’s an opportunity to attack University’s line in the dying stages. Quick-witted Tamara Smith snuck over the try line to score a try moments before the final buzzer sounded to see the Rooette’s win 8-6 to earn themselves a spot in the grand final verses Kincumber. Players player was a draw between Jess Neilson and Casey O’Bryan. With a passionate and vocal crowd behind them the Rooette’s started strong with Jess Nielson dragging a Kincumber player out the sideline giving Karuah an opportunity to attack early in the game, Ebony Oakley capitalised scoring a try from dummy half. Kincumber bounced back and scored a long-range try taking the scores to 6-4. Rooette’s were next to score through Ebony Oakley barging over from close range and converting her own try to see the halftime score 10-6 Karuah’s way. The Rooette’s were fast out of the blocks in the second half with Tamara Smith scoring

Dear Jasminda,

I don’t feel comfortable hugging casual acquaintances, or cheek kissing for that matter, but at this time of year everyone from the neighbour to the fruit and veg delivery man seems to move in for a hug and kiss. What is the correct etiquette and is there any way to resist in a non-offensive way? Mrs HK, Lemon Tree Passage Dear Mrs HK

the try of the season manoeuvring her way through the defence and streaking up the sideline scoring next to the posts which saw Karuah leading 14-6. Kincumber fought back hard capitalising on a few questionable ref decisions and run in two quick tries to snatch the game and win 16-14. Players Player for the game was also a draw Jess Neilson and Tamara Smith. Overall an outstanding display from all of the Karuah ladies. The postseason presentation saw Kayla Campbell & Ebony Oakley awarded Coaches Award. Ashley Bills receiving Best and Fairest, and Jess Neilson Players Player. Congratulations to all the Ladies Captain Lacey Benek, Vice Captain Ashley Bills, Kayla Campbell, Chantelle Gallagher, Kelly Johnson, Lauren Davies, Reane Lamb, Maddie Malcolm, Meriki Mason, Georgia Napier, Jess Neilson, Ebony Oakley, Casey O’Bryan, Amani Ping, Teegan Pringle, Kelsey Wade, Maddison Russell, Tamara Smith, Meagan Terry and Tayla Wilson. The Karuah Rooette’s coached by Daniel Evans will look to field a thirteen a side team for the 2019 season. Anyone interested please contact the Karuah RLFC by facebook or the secretary Sonja Evans 0402283316. The Rooette’s woulld like to thank all the support team and supports that turned up every week. Thanks to Mark Bills, Todd and Pricilla Mason, Dennis and Melissa Russell for their monetary and gifts and kind donations.

YOU have a fruit and veg delivery man? You don’t have to trawl through supermarkets for bruised and battered oranges from California or avocados that are already smashed due to oversqueezing, or rockmelon that’s as hard as a . . . well, hard as a rock, obviously. Hell, I’d not only accept a kiss from the delivery man, I’d invite him in for some fruit salad and a mojito with lime zest and mint sprigs straight from his delivery box. You are one lucky woman, Mrs HK. Now, back to the hugs and kisses. I understand what you are saying. Some people feel very comfortable bestowing lingering kisses and great big sweaty bear hugs to all and sundry. Others prefer the more genteel air kiss, or they feign cultural superiority by giving attention to both cheeks, which is trés chic, trés tendance, trés à la mode (look it up, Mrs HK). Slightly more uncomfortable situations arise when you offer your right cheek (as is accepted protocol, I might add) and the person opposite misjudges or doesn’t know basic etiquette and you end up pashing your orthodontist. It is terribly uncomfortable, particularly if you are there for root canal therapy. I was extremely unnerved by my neighbour’s ‘welcome to the hood’ greeting until he assured me he was Maori. Now I can hongi like a professional (look it up, Mrs HK). The main issue with the hug/kiss thing is when people want to hug and kiss your kids. This is completely unacceptable. Kids should never be pressured to kiss or hug Uncle Jim or Aunty Gladys or Harold down the road, or Santa for that matter. If you are the kissee (I made up that word, Mrs HK, so don’t try to look it up) and the kisser moves in for a slobbery greeting, offer your hand instead and give a firm handshake (though not as firm as Mark Latham). Otherwise a few strong pats on the back can be enough to state your position. Remember, you are in control. If they still don’t get the hint, cross your arms in front of you and say, ‘Back off, you predatory worm, you segmented parasitic creature belonging to phylum Annelida and subclass Hirudinea.’ That should be understood in any language. Carpe diem. Jasminda.
