Kindergarten Kids, Ready, Set, Go By Margie TIERNEY
THERE’S a collective sigh coming from parents and some grandparents across New South Wales this week, as children head back to school after the long summer holiday break. There’s sure to be a few tears as well, as the littlies begin the first day of a long school journey. Tea Gardens Primary School will welcome 22 new students starting Kinder in 2017. “Obviously we are thrilled and looking forward to all our new Kindergarten [students] commencing school this Wednesday,” Principal Mark Clemson told News Of The Area. The 22 enrolments are on par with the number of ‘Kindies’ enrolled last year at the school.

“Prior to commencing school, our newest students have undertaken individualised Best Start assessments to help identify the literacy and numeracy skills of each student at the beginning of Kindergarten.” “This allows our teachers to target learning at the appropriate level for each student,” Principal Clemson said. HUMOROUS OR DEFAMATORY?
In some preliminary Court hearings in the District Court of NSW, the Court considered a case brought by a Sydney teenager relating to his extreme mullet haircut. w Buying & Selling Properties Ali Mosslnani (known as Ziggy) w Wills & Estate Planning w Powers of Attorney & Guardianship filed defamation proceedings against various media outlets, including w Criminal Law w Family Law & Defacto Relations Nationwide News and Australian Radio Network. The case arose after the w Employment Law media outlets published photos of the w Dispute Resolution & teenager featuring his mullet haircut Commercial Litigation and describing it as a “ridiculous w Contesting Wills haircut” and/or a “shameful haircut”. w Commercial Ziggy claimed that by publishing the - Buying/Selling a Business photos the media outlets subjected the - Company Transactions teenager to ridicule by the public and - Leasing it was implied that he was a “stupid person” and deserved to be ridiculed because of his haircut. Appointments Fridays 2pm-6pm Judge Gibson was asked by the 191 Myall Street media outlets to strike out some Tea Gardens aspects of the claim on the basis that www.mullanelindsay.com.au Ziggy would not be able to establish

the claims at a full hearing. In a preliminary decision delivered in October 2016 Judge Gibson doubted the strength of the case because most of the comments were humorous, some in the form of clever observations, and did not imply that Ziggy was stupid and ugly. Many of the claims were struck out, however Ziggy was given the opportunity to replead his claim. The matter was again before the Court in December 2016 and at that time Judge Gibson commented that the case may have backfired in that bringing the defamation proceedings had brought further publicity to Ziggy and his haircut. It is not uncommon in defamation proceedings that the original conduct complained about is further publicised if the proceedings are defended in Court. The case is continuing.

A LOVE of country and its people was the theme that played out time and time again at the Australia Day celebrations in Hawks Nest last week. The weather was far from kind, but it didn’t stop hundreds of people from attending the festivities in Moira Parade Park. “You don’t melt in the rain,” a philosophical Vivienne Boyd told News Of The Area. Vivienne, Tay King, Elsa Colella and Jayne Ireland were tasked with the job of selling 500 lamingtons. Jayne also had another reason to celebrate the day, her own birthday. ‘’This is what I’m doing on my birthday,” Jayne said. “My kids will be turning up later this morning and they’ll say, that’s enough work today Mum.” As always the sausage sangers and bacon and egg rolls were a huge hit. “We bought 300 sausages, 30 kilos of bacon, 600 eggs and 600 bread rolls,” Lioness President Linda Allan said. Linda was up at 4.30am on the big day to get things moving although organising the event had begun months before. “We start organising in November, working out the citizens’ awards.” ‘’It’s a great turn out, we’re stoked,” Linda also

q LOCAL HISTORY: Nigel Weeks, Frank Horwill and Rodney Ireland at the Historical Society’s Australia Day Celebrations. The free sessions provide ideas and tips on quick and easy ways to pack a healthy lunch box boosting fruit and vegetable content for cancer prevention and saving money on the weekly grocery shop. Hunter Nutrition Project Officer Clare Murphy said favouring fresh foods over packaged goods and boosting fruit and vegetable content were easy ways to make lunch boxes budget-friendly. “Processed snacks are much more expensive per kilogram than fruit and vegetables,
vegetables and salad, fruit, meat and alternatives, dairy and water. Packing something from each food group gives the lunch box an A-grade. “A nutrient-rich lunch box gives kids what they need to learn and play all day long,” Miss Murphy said. “Adding extra vegetables to family dinners is also an ideal way to refuel kids’ bodies ready for school the next day.” Eat It To Beat It’s free Fruit & Veg Sense workshops to show parents how to make simple, budget-friendly changes to household meals, such as modifying a stir fry recipe to reduce expensive meat ingredients and increase cheaper vegetables.
“This simple switch will make the meal better for you and your hip pocket,” Miss Murphy said. Eating more fruit and vegetables was important for good health and cancer prevention. “A fibre-rich diet including two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables a day can help prevent one in six bowel cancer cases,” Miss Murphy said. “Eating the recommended servings of fruit and vegetables also reduces your risk of oesophageal, lung and some mouth and throat cancers.” For free workshop information and bookings, recipes and tips go to eatittobeatit.com.au.

Chuckin’ Chickens – No Foul QUESTION: Why did the chicken cross the road? Answer: To get to the Tea Gardens Country Club. Why? To take part in the now infamous Chook Chuckin’ Competition held every year in the lead up to Australia Day. To put your mind at ease, the chooks being thrown weren’t real, just rubber imitations to be thrown as far as possible on the pristine greens of the bowling club. To play, all you had to do was register, with the competition open to all with a penchant for poultry. Watched on by an enthusiastic crowd of spectators, the 70 competitors had three chances each to show off their skills at chuckin’ a chook. There were underarm throws and overarm
attempts. And not all the chooks flew according to plan. A number of chicks sailed off the green or flew too high, ending up on the roof. These throws of course were declared ‘a foul’. “It’s a great day for the children, there’s face painting, a jumping castle, and the prizes are so nice,” spectator Olive McKeown told News Of the Area.

Oh Honey, Honey By Rachael VAUGHAN
SONUDOR Honey has been in business for the last five years, but has remained relatively low key about its high quality product and its wonderful benefits. The Hughes family, owners of Sonudor Honey, noticed that there weren’t a lot of bees around to help pollinate their family pastures, so they invested in two hives on their property. They now boast over twenty hives, and David Hughes has become a registered apiarist, or bee keeper. There is a lot of work involved in checking and maintaining the hives. It is important to check hives regularly for any small hive beetles and diseases, as these can completely destroy the hive plus other hives in
the area. The current incredibly hot and humid weather in the region is not ideal for bees. For those interested in keeping hives, you also have
to be registered with the DPI (Department of Primary Industries) and be a member of your local beekeeping association. However, all this hard

“We’ve been doing this for about four years, we don’t charge anything, it’s a great day out for families,” Country Club General Manager Warren Gooley said. work aside, the benefits of honey and having bees in our natural environment are immeasurable. Apart from being a natural sweetener and energy source, other benefits include soothing a sore throat, helping to heal wounds on both people and animals, assisting with digestive issues, antibacterial and antifungal properties and it is a major source of antioxidants. Sonudor Honey is wild bush honey and 100 percent raw, straight from the hive.

There is nothing to add and it is not heated. Teneale Bassett, daughter of the Hughes Family, told News Of The Area, “The feedback we get from our customers is it’s the best tasting honey they have had and they can’t get over the amazing smell.” “We have a number of customers who send it to their extended families in other states of Australia as well as internationally to both Japan and Ireland.” “We have also done a number of fundraisers with

Controversial Quarry Application THE Developer at the centre of a controversial project at Fame Cove/ North Arm Cove has now launched an application to construct a quarry on the highly sensitive site. The land is owned by billionaire, Phillip Dong Fang Lee’s LDF Enterprises and covers the iconic 409 hectare site on the northern foreshore of Port Stephens. “The application speaks of mining 25,000 cubic metres each year and a development cost of $400,000,” Mr Len Yearsley,
Vice-President of the North Arm Cove Residents Association, said. Mr. Yearsley told News Of The Area, “There is no shortage of commercially available stone available from an existing local quarry near Karuah without creating further environmental damage to a site that is already subject to legal action due to ongoing breaches of development approvals.” The developer has previously incurred fines and costs in excess of $250,000 for major environmental breaches on the site. The Land and Environment Court recently extended a stop work order
LAST August, Cove residents Joan and Col Williams were invited to see a cabaret group called Loosely Woven perform at Wallarobba near Dungog. They were so impressed they decided on the spot to book them for a performance at North Arm Cove. This unique group of singers and instrumentalists put together and stage a number of public concerts per year. The cabaret style events are a mix of folk, classical, comedy, pop, blues, ethnic and country, with a bit of drama thrown in.
Surprisingly, they don’t charge a fee, they just do it for the sheer love of performing and where possible, they involve local musicians and singers. No amplification is used, except for the keyboard and this gives the audience a rare opportunity to hear the vocals and instruments cleanly and clearly. Audience members are actively encouraged to join in and, with no amplification, find themselves on an equal footing with the performers. on a large tract of Port Stephens’ waterfront land until 24 March. The court is assessing six separate affidavits alleging serious environmental damage and unauthorised work. Mr Yearsley fears, “If approval for the quarry is granted, the developer will breach the conditions imposed and simply pay any fines imposed.’’ “With heavy machinery operating, along with blasting and a crushing plant, the noise and dust impact on the surrounding residential areas of Bundabah and North Arm Cove, which are just a short distance across the water, would be significant,” he said.
Woven. “I guess you could call us a pretty loose knit group so the name represents whoever I can round up at the time for a particular concert.” The group started back in the 90s when a few members would get together and participate in the occasional live-toair concert on community radio. One of the members suggested a public concert and since then, Loosely Woven has given several concerts a year. Through word of mouth, the group’s popularity has grown and they now draw audiences of 150 plus. This year they are scheduled to appear at South Turramurra, Dee

EDITORIAL STATEMENT:
Safe Bus for travelling students By Rachael VAUGHAN PARENTS of Myall Coast students travelling by bus to Medowie Christian School this year can be assured of a much safer journey for their children. Kate Washington, Shadow Minister for the Hunter, spoke with News Of The Area this week, and shared that a bus fitted with seatbelts has been rolled out for the children of our area to travel to Medowie Christian School in 2017. After a series of fatal bus crashes, the Government announced in 2013 it would spend $208 million to install seat belts in around 1,700 buses dedicated to school runs in rural and regional areas over ten years. Kate Washington has
campaigned the issue of seat belts on school buses long before she entered parliament, and challenged the government that their roll out of these seatbelt upgraded buses and spending of the allocated budget was far too slow when the safety of our children was at stake. “The fact that the Government is moving glacially on this issue when children’s lives are at risk just beggars belief,” Kate Washington said. Mr Simon Herd, Principal of Medowie Christian School, has fought alongside Kate Washington for this important safety measure. “A simple physics lesson will tell you that in the event of an emergency stop, those children who are unbelted or standing with backpacks on a bus travelling at highway speeds are going to continue
travelling at the speed of the bus, until they hit something hard that stops them,” Simon Herd said. Kate Washington welcomed the news that a bus with seatbelts has finally been approved for the children travelling down the Pacific Highway to Medowie Christian School at speeds of up to 110 kilometres an hour. “This is fantastic news for these children and their families.” “Parents can feel much more confident that their children are so much safer travelling to school.” Kate Washington assures News Of The Area that she will continue the fight for this important safety issue, and hopes to one day be able to deliver the same news of safer buses to parents of children in all schools in her constituency.

Myall of Holiday Fun By Margie TIERNEY OUR Australia Day celebrations showed us just how diverse our culture and population has become. So too are the tourists who head to the Myall Coast. Over the summer holiday season there was a huge influx of visitors to the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens area. For some tourists, the region has become like a second home. John and Denise Wright, from the north of England, have made a remarkable 43 trips to Australia. “We come to visit our sister Olive in Tea Gardens and we have a daughter in
Karuah and a son in the Blue Mountains,” John and Denise told News Of The Area. The Wrights are in the middle of a three month stay in Australia and are enjoying every moment. “We had a great time at the Country Club’s Karaoke night, singing along to Joe Cocker’s You Can Leave Your Hat On.” Denise’s performance was witnessed by Club Vice President Danny Johnson. “Never do anything in a Club that you don’t want spread around,” Danny said with a laugh. Elise Duder and her partner Dean German came for a week to visit her Mum

in Hawks Nest and do some fishing. ‘“We hired a boat and went up river, we had great fun in a glorious location,” Elise said. And then there was the group of good friends from Sydney travelling to Hawks Nest for a long weekend to celebrate a birthday. “We’ve only been here a day but feels like a week,” Liz Cullen said. The women took advantage of the dress shops in Tea Gardens to add to their wardrobes and visited the Galleries in the Garden. But the highlight was a dinner party on the sands of Jimmys Beach. “It was absolutely beautiful, good friends, good food, just a great weekend.”

There are programs on offer for newborns to HSC students and they’re all free and easily accessible. “Wednesday afternoons we have homework help from 3 o’clock until 4.45pm and a lovely group of volunteers who have had all their police checks and working with children checks to help children with their homework,” Librarian Carol Johnson told News Of The Area. “Some of the volunteers are retired teachers and
others are just volunteers who want to work with children.” The program is open to all school-aged children from Kindergarten to Year 12 HSC students. ‘’With the homework help, there’s free afternoon tea, free use of the computers and free printing,’’ Carol said. ‘’Tiny Turtles is our baby program, singing and nursery rhymes for newborns to two year olds.” “That starts Wednesday 1 February at 9.30am then every fortnight,” Carol said. ‘’On Monday mornings at 9.30 we have our ‘Turtletime’. “It’s a preschool storytime for three to five year olds.” “We read stories and do craft and have fun.”
“The kids often bring their morning tea and have that in the library and then the mums usually like to go down to the park so they can play afterwards.’’ “It’s a really nice outing for the parents.’’ Carol Johnson, who’s worked at the Tea Gardens Library for 13 years, is very passionate about her work. “I’m very lucky to work in such a lovely location with lovely staff and meet the wonderful public who come in to visit.” To check times and programs you can call the Tea Gardens Library on 4997 1265 or go online: midcoast.greatlakes.nsw. gov.au/library.

A roaring good time D
LAST year I entered a competition in the News Of The Area and won a family pass to the zoo. I used the prize last week to visit Taronga Zoo with my mum and brother Jack. We had a fantastic day together looking at all the different animals and displays. It was the first time I had been to the zoo and it was amazing. The Bongo Antelope was my favorite animal because there are only 100 of them left in the wild. Getting to go into the Lemur enclosure and seeing King Julian up close was great. I also enjoyed watching the Seal Show and seeing an elephant have a bath. My brother liked the Iguanas, Komodo Dragons and snakes the best. Thankyou, News Of The Area, for giving me this fantastic experience. I hope there will be many more competitions to enter this year. Maggie Cunich Bulahdelah

Hawks Nest Vets Stroke GOLF
Hawks Nest Vets By Tony SMITH Hawks Nest Vets Stroke 24/1/2017 A Grade 1. Graham Kelly 34.3 2. Rob Lamont 34.5 3. Ross Kirwin 36.3
I can remember the exact moment when I realised I needed to stop being a stay-at-home mum and go back to work. It was when the storyline of Bear in the Big Blue House became important to me. I was gaining one plot, but losing another. Those first weeks, armed with a briefcase and a breast pump, were hard. Being separated from your offspring is no walk in the park, whether it is because you are returning to work or study and they have to be put into childcare, or they are starting school and the nest is suddenly empty. A lot of this comes down to that unfortunate condition known as ‘mother guilt’. We are guilty when we go to work and we are guilty when we don’t. We are particularly guilty if, like you, we feel as though we have some free time on our hands. Don’t you worry, VT. In no time at all you’ll be whipping up 24 choc-chip cookies, teaching voluntary ethics classes and driving to three different inter-school activities in one day, because schools love parental involvement and if you’ve got a void, trust me, they’ll fill it. Having your little cherub at school can initially involve a period of grief. But then, one day, you’ll say, “I’ll miss you, sweetheart”, and you’ll try not to let her see that little skip in your step as you hotfoot it home. And then you’ll put on a load of washing, clean the house in one hour instead of the usual five, and dance around in your husband’s Y-fronts, singing into a candelabra like you’re Tom Cruise in Risky Business. And that, VT, is when you know you’ve reached the ‘acceptance’ stage of the grieving process. Carpe Diem, Jasminda.

BOWLS
Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 25 January It was overcast today but thankfully no rain impeded the 46 players turning out for their usual Wednesday bowls. There were five games of Fours and one game of Triples played. Winners were decided by 20 points for the win plus one for each end won. The winners were the triples team of Ross Barry, Zac Byrnes and Merv Mills. Runners-up were: Dave Ransome, Col Saillard, Bill Bridges and Pip Sullivan. 27 January
Sunday Bowls Winners A good field of 24 bowlers attended the Friday Jackpot Pairs today. It was great to see four ladies participating. To take out the money today you needed to win with a high margin. It was a countback on ends that determined the winners. They were Gary Wynne and Greg Pearson. They beat Ken Devlin and Mick Parker into second place. The jackpot was not won. 29 January It was warm today when Sunday Bowls resumed after the Christmas break. Twenty-two players participated playing three
Bowls Heats Up BOWLS
Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS NOT a very action-packed week for the members of the Women’s Bowling Club. Unfortunately weather conditions do impact on whether bowls can be played or not. As the temperature at 9:30am on Tuesday 24 January had already reached 30 degrees and it was predicted to go as high as 42 degrees, it was decided that play would be cancelled. Eight members stayed for a roll up. I think the comment was made that “only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun”. After ten ends, the heat

got the better of us and we called it a day. Good fun, despite the thrashing that Kathy Rimmer, Pauline Perry, Francis Betar and Kerry Faber dealt out to Bev Dunn, Lynda Richards, Dianne Swift and Sheril Johnson. Thank goodness it was not a real game. Thursday 26 January being Australia day meant that there would be no bowls played. Round 1 of the Club’s Major Singles Competition will now commence on Tuesday 31 January instead of 2 February. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us and play will proceed uninterrupted for this competition. Social bowls will continue to be played throughout this competition.
games of Triples and one game of Pairs. Sunday Bowls was under new management today with Stewart Sturrock taking over the reins from Robyn and Ron Webster. He was very ably assisted by Beverley Thrift and Pam and Ross Barry plus the two cooks, Luke Gliwa and Barry Goode. Great job everyone! If you won by a big margin today you were to be disappointed as the lowest winning margin was selected to decide the winner. On a margin of just +1, (how low can you get!), the winners were Rhonda Hadfield, Dave Ransome and Denis Wilberforce. The luck losers were Tim

a long history of playing together did get away to a good start and went on to claim the title. Some great bowls were witnessed by a solid crowd and while only one team could win, both teams did themselves proud and the reputations for skill and good sportsmanship of all players were enhanced. Last Sunday saw the club’s first inter-club visit of the year with a very large contingent of social bowlers from the Burwood Colliery calling by the club for the day. A hearty barbecue breakfast was enjoyed by all, followed by a full green of social, but competitive bowlers from the two clubs. Over eight playing rinks and 18 ends each, the final result was Burwood up by only five shots! We claim it was our hospitality and their good company that led to our allowing them to come up trumps, but in truth and to use an old sporting cliché, “Bowls was the winner on the day”! A sausage sizzle lunch, followed by a presentation of prizes, led into aftergame refreshments in our comfortably air-conditioned
RSL Club – a hot, but very pleasant day! Pennant teams have now started to form and the club selectors are going through the arduous task of picking teams to best represent the club. Internal selection trials have already been held and inter-club trials will soon follow. Players’ ambitions have to be matched to skills and egos massaged, a stressful time for selectors (and players like yours truly who always seems to bowl worse when a selector is watching!) but an eventual pennant win could make it all worthwhile. Junior development and social days have continued on Tuesdays and Thursdays despite the heat, although on some occasions, strategic pauses have been allowed to increase water consumption! Sunday morning competitions have now also resumed with free introductory sessions available for new bowlers. If you would like to join in, just ring the club, or check out our Facebook page (Karuah RSL Men’s Bowls Club) for more information. We will make you most welcome. See you at Karuah.

q The victorious Club Championship Fours team: Peter Dennis, John French, Sam Rees and Gordon Latimore.
JANUARY has seen a fastpaced resumption of the sport of lawn bowls at the Karuah RSL. Already the Club Championship Fours have been run and decided, an interclub social day has been fiercely fought out (but socially!) and preparation has begun in the forming of the club’s Pennant teams for 2017! The Sunday bowlers will always make you feel welcome. Come along and enjoy the most played sport in Australia. There is still plenty of time to enter and it would be great if more players
weekends saw Club President Gordon Latimore’s side come up against successful new Skip Dennis Ashbridge’s side in the Championship Fours. These internal club competitions are always hard fought with the glory of having the four winners names put up on the club’s honour board at stake. The “betting” was pretty even before the game, with pundits predicting that whichever team got away to the better start would go on to win. As it happened, President Gordon’s team backed by
The closest mixed-doubles team to the winners were Graham Lawler and Denise Haycocks, winners of three rounds of darts. The ladies’ highest score competition winner was Elizabeth Roberts, achieving 102 points. The men’s highest score competition winner was Darren Rapley, achieving 100 well earned points. Great Darts.

and family commitments allow, the women launch their boat into the Myall River, jump aboard and hone their rowing skills. As if often the case at their last training session, only three women were able to attend: Kelly Pietsch, Justine Cruise and L.J. The women’s crew has been together for three years. Helping out with their training are long time members, HNTG Surf Life Saving President Stephen (Scuba) Howell, and Club Patron Peter (the Whale) Rogers. So if you’re looking to support your local Surf Club head to Soldiers Beach on Saturday 4 February to watch the crews battle it out to determine the final champions of each division.
