A TIMELY reminder about the hazards of not maintaining and cleaning fireplaces occurred for the residents of a house in North Arm Cove last Thursday.

Just before 11am, residents of a house in Eastslope Way attempted to start their fireplace and were shortly alerted to a problem with the fireplace flue which had not been cleaned for many years.

The ceiling and insulation around the flue due to carbon build up had ignited putting the house structure and lives at great risk.

Emergency services including NSW Fire & Rescue from Tea Gardens, Ambulance, Police and RFS crews from North Arm Cove, Karuah, Tea Gardens and Limeburners Creek were also asked to attend.

Speaking with News Of The Area, Deputy Captain of Tea Gardens NSW Fire & Rescue Dean Chester said, “The owners of the house are extremely lucky that they noticed the seriousness of the situation and called when they did.”

a serious reminder for those with indoor fireplaces to have their systems inspected and checked before the winter weather kicks in, and daily use of fireplaces become commonplace through necessity, and to also update their smoke alarms.

Bromhead pushes grants MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead is calling on local junior sporting teams, neighbourhood centres, men’s sheds and other community groups in the new Mid-Coast Council to apply for a grant of up to $50,000 through the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund.

Mr Bromhead said Mid-Coast Council will receive $15 million to kick-start the delivery of priority infrastructure and services for the local community.

“Mid-Coast Council along with all other new councils has been issued with guidelines on how

to allocate their share of the Stronger Communities Fund,” Mr Bromhead said.

“The Minister for Local Government Paul Toole has made it clear that new Mid-Coast Council will deliver the better services and infrastructure that the local community needs and wants now and in the future.

“Local residents and community groups will play a vital role alongside the council in building a stronger community for all.

“Community groups in the Mid-Coast’s local government area are the heart and soul of the region and the services

they provide make a real and lasting difference to the lives of residents.

“Community groups can apply for grants of up to $50,000 for local projects, such as the upgrade of club facilities or new sporting equipment.”

Minister for Local Government Paul Toole said the new council will also invest in larger scale projects to deliver longterm economic and social benefits.

“These projects may include swimming pool upgrades, road and carpark improvements or new sporting field amenities,” Mr Toole said.

“Importantly, the local

community will have the opportunity to have their say on how these funds are spent and I would encourage residents with ideas on what projects they would like to see funded to get in touch with the new council.”

“To ensure the Stronger Communities Fund is allocated to projects in an open and transparent way, the NSW Government will require the council to apply high standards to the decision making process, including the appointment of a local assessment panel that includes an independent probity adviser.”

By Adrienne INGRAM GIVING is a good cause for living, according to Kevin and Anne Haskew, who have just been made life members of the Myall Koala and Environment Group (MKEG).

The couple were presented with Certificates of Appreciation and Life Membership of the MKEG annual general meeting at the Tea Gardens Hotel on 17 May. “It’s a great group of people to work with giving a good cause for living,” Kevin said.

Anne and Kevin joined the MKEG in 1997.

Anne has been a scrupulous treasurer and bookkeeper since 1999 while Kevin was President from 2001 till 2014, apart from a couple of years out.

IMPROVED television reception in Bulahdelah is one step closer with the installation of the Digital TV Transmission Tower approved by Council last week.

MidCoast Council Administer John Turner approved the Development Application at the first official meeting of the new Council subject to the condition that the tower must not be painted white so it remains transparent.

The project includes the installation of a 30 metre high tower and an equipment shelter secured by a 2.4 metre high fence.

Construction will take place on the MidCoast Water Reservoir site at the foot of Alum Mountain.

With all the external walls erected and roofing now in place, contractors

have turned their attention to internal wall structures with electrical and plumbing works underway.

The floor plan for each of the internal structures appear quite spacious and given the modern style of the buildings exterior components, I’m sure the internal aspects will

MIDCOAST Council is inviting residents with an interest in protecting our local wildlife to help provide NSW scientists with data from observations as part of the "Hollows as Homes" program.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) is seeking public comment on a proposal to relocate a 3.2 kilometre section of Mungo Brush Road in Myall Lakes National Park.

The proposed action is due to inland movement of sand from Dark Point dunes which will block the road within two years without intervention.

NPWS have been monitoring sand movement since 2010 showing the dune sheet is moving inland at a rate of six to nine metres a year.

At the current rate, Consultants predict sand will start to impact on vehicle access by 2018 and bury the section of road under eight metres of sand within 50 years.

NPWS have already relocated Dark Point carpark out of the shifting dune path and removed sand from the area for public safety and to ensure pedestrian access to Dark Point dunes is maintained.

NPWS consider the proposed relocation of the section of Road the only feasible long-term management option.

Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism President Mark McCormick and Bulahdelah’s Chamber President John Sahyoun agree maintaining vehicle access along Mungo Brush Road is essential for economic, recreational and tourism activities in the area.

Mr McCormick said Mungo Brush Road access

was particularly important to the local business economy.

“The tourism potential to our towns is especially important with the road bringing thousands of tourists each year who are attracted to the National Park,” Mr McCormick said.

“If there is no intervention and the road closes, many businesses in the area will lose.”

Mr Sahyoun said Mungo Brush Road provides an essential tourism connection between the towns.

“The road is well utilised and links a number of important destinations in the National Park,” he said.

“It’s a popular tourist route between Bulahdelah and the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest areas boosting the economy in the Region.”

The Review of Environmental Factors (REF) and draft concept plans for the road relocation will be on public exhibition until 21 June.

The REF is currently displayed at Tea Gardens, Karuah and Bulahdelah Visitor Information Centres, Tea Gardens Library and can also be viewed online.

Deserved recognition for serving Seniors THE Myall University of the Third Age (U3A) has been honoured with the 2016 Port Stephens Seniors Local Achievement Award.

The award was presented by Kate Washington MP last week in recognition of achievements in serving senior members in the Port Stephens area.

Ms Washington said up against stiff competition, the Myall U3A was selected due to the significant contribution it makes to the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest community.

“The Myall U3A is a very active group that provides so many opportunities to its members to engage in a whole range of activities, from cultural and musical pursuits to physical and social activities,” Ms Washington said.

“Through the efforts of its committee, the group adds to the vibrancy and health of the community.”

Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Progress Association President Trevor Jennings nominated the

Myall U3A for the award and stated the group is held in very high regard by the community.

“The lives of many seniors have been enhanced by the high quality activities that are regularly held by the Myall U3A,” Mr Jennings said.

Ms Washington said it was an honour to award the Myall U3A with the Achievement Award.

“I thank the current President, Chris Klimek, together with all past and current members of the committee for their dedication to the delivery of such interesting opportunities,” Ms Washington

said.

“I also thank the members who attended for the presentation of the award, for their warm reception, good conversation and a lovely afternoon tea.”

The Myall U3A serves approximately 200 members through the provision of lowcost, intellectual stimulation for people in active retirement.

Classes include art workshops, Tai Chi classes, garden club meetings, fitness gym workouts, MU3A choir practices, Italian classes and Friday lectures.

A huge success without question

By Daniel SAHYOUN STROUD Country Club was packed to the rafters with over 100 people turning out for the inaugural Stroud Rock Kwiz last weekend.

The evening was organised by Stroud Public School P&C as a fundraiser to purchase educational resources for the school.

With an electric buzz of excitement, a succession of Elvis, Kylie and KISS impersonators accompanied by many long-haired rockers entered the building.

The dedicated rock fans had come from all corners of the region to test their knowledge of all things rock with live music from Rusty Strings ensuring the dance floor was rocking well into the night.

A host of local and visiting teams had their eye on the prize as they battled it out to be crowned the Inaugural Stroud Rock Kwiz

winners.

In a nail-biting finish the win was snatched by the Bulahdelah Bandits in the final round.

Stroud contestant Val Munro said the entire night was enjoyable and very wellorganised.

“It was well and truly a fun night and it was great to see everyone get right into it,” Mrs Munro said.

“I would like to congratulate the Bulahdelah team on their well-deserved win.”

There was plenty more on offer during the night with raffle prizes donated by local businesses and a supper enjoyed by all participants.

Stroud School P&C Member Tess Hillard said the P&C appreciated the support of the community.

“This is the first trivia night that we’ve held in 15 years and we’re really happy with the turnout,” Ms Hillard

“We’ve raised over $1,500 and hope that everyone will continue to support our events.”

friendly challenge.

“Come on Stroud, you got defeated by Bulahdelah this year,” she said.

“I hope that Stroud

can get their game on for next year’s trivia night,” Ms Hillard told News Of The Area.

On Wednesday 25 May, following a shortened Choir practice, the local Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington presented the NSW Seniors Festival Local Achievement Award to the Myall U3A at a brief presentation ceremony held at the Hawks Nest Community Hall.

The presentation was well attended by MU3A members and everyone enjoyed the afternoon tea/coffee and cakes baked by members of the MU3A

Committee and choir.

As a Christian mother and grandmother I am concerned for the future of my grandchildren.

Our Christian heritage on which our nation was built is being attacked in parliament by the media and a noisy few.

I encourage all to buy Australian made products and give our farmers a fair go, supporting them in times of drought etc.

Home team win Invaluable help for the day UNION

THE Myall Coast Mudcrabs had a great victory last Saturday against Nabiac Wallamba in round 6 of the Lower Mid North Coast Rugby competition played in windy conditions at Myall Park Hawks Nest.

It was the conditions that dictated the game with both teams faced to run into a strong south easterly breeze in one half however it was the large home crowd that had gathered to watch the double header with the local Hawks Rugby League side that got them home.

Ironically both teams played better rugby when forced to run into the breeze not using the breeze to its full extent when running with the breeze.

For the Mudcrabs Ashley Rushby was a standout scoring three of the teams four tries as well as converting all four tries that made

the difference in points as Wallamba were only able to convert three of their tries.

Rushby was ably assisted in the forwards by James Farmer, Sean Blanchard and the Weir brothers Zach and Harrieson.In the backs in was the young guns who really stood up in defence and i refer to Sonny Marks, Jackson Page, Tristan Tansey and Karl Main who never stopped trying which led to the teams victory.

This result will stand the Mudcrabs in great shape to continue their form and gain some valuable competition points as they travel to Old Bar next Saturday to play Old Bar Clams at their home venue.

This will be followed by a Bye which will assist the squad to gain full fitness for the tough competition ahead.

This most pleasing result was that it was not only in front of a Vocal home crowd but also the clubs Major sponsors were on hand for the annual Sponsors Day for season 2016. A great result for all to witness.

Draft Operational Council calls for opinion

MIDCOAST Council is inviting the community to have their say on the Draft Operational Plan, Budget and Fees and Charges for 2016-2017 which has been placed on public exhibition following its approval at the Council meeting on 25 May. If you’re wondering what the Operational Plan is, it’s the documentation that guides the day-today operations of Council, including a detailed outline of what Council plans to achieve over the next 12 months.

It includes specific criteria against which Council’s performance is measured.

This draft suite of documents physically combines the 2016-2017 plans of the previous

Gloucester Shire, Greater Taree City and Great Lakes Councils and is based on the direction of the delivery programs and long term financial plans of each of the former councils.

“The combined documents give some certainty to our community about what we will deliver over the next year and an opportunity to comment on the direction we are proposing to take,” said Council’s Interim General Manager, Mr Glenn Handford.

“We are committed to provision of the services and service levels of the former three councils for 2016-2017.”

“During the year ahead, we will work across Council to develop a 20172018 Operational Plan

so that there is a single plan, budget and fees and charges across MidCoast Council for its second year of operation,” said Mr Handford.

In addressing the Government’s rate path freeze policy, Council Administrator Mr John Turner said “the NSW Government proclamation requires Council to apply the 2015-2016 rating structure, rating categories and sub-categories that applied in each former area for 2016-2017.

“For the former Greater Taree City and Great Lakes Council this will be based on a rate peg of 1.8% and for the former Gloucester Shire Council this will include the continuation of a previously determined special rate variation.”

The council has funding to use a specialised team employing the Worimi Bush Regeneration group to complete a large-scale asparagus control program in Winda Woppa - including The Boulevarde area where

By Sharon TAYLOR MYALL Masters were recently named the highest point scoring club for their division in Masters Swimming NSW. They were awarded their trophy at a recent meet hosted by the Ettalong Pelicans.

The trophy was accepted by team Captain, Chris Mobbs.

This was a fitting moment as the club also won the club with the highest percentage increase in points due in no small part to Chris’s enthusiasm in encouraging participation this year .

These awards top off a year of achievement for Captain Mobbs who was named Myall Masters Swimmer of the Year and Masters Swimming NSW Age Champion.

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowls

TUESDAY, 24 May: There were 15 bowlers in attendance today.

A nine strong contingent of Myall Masters swimmers, attended the Ettalong meet.

All swimmers gave it their best among stiff competition from over 230 swimmers and some high performing clubs.

A number of state, national and even a world record were set in the fast Ettalong pool.

Highlights for the Myall include a win for swimmer Peter Kellaway in his age group with a third placing for Peter King. Linda Stubbs won her 200m freestyle with Sharon Taylor coming second in the same event.

Christine Sefton swam a screeching hot 100M breaststroke just outside her personal best.

Not bad for a lack of actual swimming training.

Brad Jensen was very pleased with the outcome of some Autumn endurance swimming in the bay, posting a personal best time for his 100M freestyle. He was 5th in his age division of 19 swimmers.

The wind was fairly strong and it felt like winter was on the way.

Masters swimming is a great way to keep fit ,whether you are into competition or not.

While the local pool might be closed, a hardy band of open water swimmers led by Captain Mobbs, can be found most mornings off Jimmy’s Beach from 8:30am doing a cruisey kilometre .

Thursday, 26 May: Social bowls games were cancelled today, apart from the rain there were too few bowlers in attendance.

The State Carnival was held at Port City this week and several teams from Tea Gardens competed.

Spit roasts seem to be the order of the day with all Pennant players, including reserves, invited to attend a Post-Pennant bash on Friday 17 June.

THE Tea Gardens Hawks defeated an understrength Paterson River side by 50 points to 14 on Saturday.

John Schultz was the Hawks Player of the round, scoring two tries, winning the Referees best and fairest points and the Supporters award.

Top-gun, Richard Lee will be defending his title and runner-up last year, Jeff Baker, will be keen to reverse the 2015 result, but first they have to run the gambit of a good field that has other ideas.

Incidentally, Richard was part of the winning side in the recent three-day Blue Water Classic Men’s pairs played at Nelson Bay. Great stuff!

The action will commence on Sunday 5 June.

Markers are needed for the opening games.

LAST week the Karuah Roos took on the Glendale Gorilla’s at Lionel Morten Oval the Game Day Sponsors were K.W Baker Painting and Karuah Kitchens.

The Roos were first to put points on the board with #3 Jake Langdon scoring in the first few minutes 4/0, then 2 more quick tries by #1 Trent Saunders and #6 Matt Cameron and #6 Sam Croese converting 14/0, before

Matt Cameron and Tim Johnson. And a great try saving tack in the corner by Nathan Ritzau.

The Final score was Karuah 36 Glendale 28.

At its Ordinary Meeting held on 25 May 2016, Council approved the placement of a combined draft Operational Plan, Budget and Fees and Charges on public exhibition. The mixed doubles teams format was used for the enthusiastic club members present for the darts night.

The ladies highest score competition winner for the night was q Lyn Peirson ,achieving 132 points.

The mens highest score winner was Paul Bennett,scoring 140 points.

25MAY: Forty-eight bowlers provided some competitive games during the Wednesday Nominated Triples today and it is refreshing to announce that the team of Vic Garlick, Col Fossey and Bill Heylbut won the day with a great score of +38.

All of these gentlemen have been playing very good bowls lately and deserve

their result.

The formidable team of John Younghusband, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson came in second with a good score of +31.

It was announced that Tea Gardens Bowling Club will receive a visit from the East Maitland Bowling Club on Saturday 4 June.

This event will be Mixedmufti and will start at 12.30 pm for a 1.00 pm start.

Cost will be $20.00 per player and will include a spit roast after the game. Sounds great!
