A SEA of red swept across Bulahdelah Central School last Friday in recognition of the Day for Daniel.

The annual day was developed by the EDaniel Morcombe Foundation with the aim of educating children about their personal safety.

Organising Teacher Angie Vella said the school has taken part in the day for the past few years.

“It’s great to have kids in our community empowered by learning safety awareness,” Ms Vella said.

“Strategies relating to obeying rules, safety networks and respectful relationships were some of the areas covered to

GRAB your best girl or boy, put on your dancing shoes and head to the Tea Gardens Country Club this Saturday for some good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll.

Local band 2 Stufd 2 Jump has been together for four years and plays a unique style of music blending blues and Classic Rock n Roll with a dash of Cajun Country Rock.

“We just get on so well, we’re a bunch of mature ‘musos’ with years of experience,” Saxophone player Joe Dalli told News Of The Area.

With Nick Mandas lead singer and guitarist, Gareth Bowder on bass, drummer Keith Holdom and Joe on

Sax, the average age of the band members is around 60.

“Why do we call ourselves 2 Stufd 2 Jump,” explained Joe. “We used to be able to jump on stage, on top of speakers, and tables in the old days, but now we’re too stuffed to do that,” said Joe. From the Eagles, BB King, Australian Crawl, Elvis and the Rolling Stones to ACDC and Guns n’ Roses, the band does it all.

“We enjoy playing music and love to see people get up and dance,” said Joe. “It’s very rewarding, and the band is very good to listen too as well.”

Joe has been playing the sax on and off for most of his life.

Lions raise funds for community

BULAHDELAH Lions Club have continued with their fundraising efforts this month with the proceeds supporting the local community and areas further afield.

The October fundraisers include Driver Reviver duties at Browns Flat rest area over the long weekend and catering for the Wild Side Adventure Race and the Bulahdelah Hunting and Social Club dinner.

Lions Club President Roger Dixon told News Of The Area the funds raised go towards projects for the International Lions Fund, the Australian Lions Foundation and the local area.

“Some of the local projects include funds for the Bulahdelah Scouts, Cricket Club and the School Breakfast Club program, and the ongoing improvements to the Lions Park on the south side of the Myall River,” Mr Dixon said.

“Our latest project is to raise $200,000 to build a Community Activity Park for Bulahdelah,” he added.

Lion Arthur Baker said the Activity Park is to be constructed in the Mountain Park.

“It’s designed to bring together all members of the community including the youth, families, the elderly and disadvantaged,” Mr Baker said.

“We hope to incorporate a

skateboard park, gentle exercise equipment for the more mature residents and upgrade the children’s play area to include a road network for younger children to play and learn the road rules.”

The Bulahdelah Lions Club meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.00pm at Bulahdelah Bowling Club.

“People interested in joining the Bulahdelah Lions or supporting their projects are always welcome,” Mr Dixon said.

Area the Foundation is getting bigger, stronger and better each year.

“More and more schools are organising a special day to celebrate the life of Daniel Morecambe,” she said.

“The more the message of child protection and child safety goes out to communities, the better it is.”

The Foundation was

established by Bruce and Denise

Morcombe in 2005 after their son Daniel was abducted and murdered in 2003 while waiting for a bus on the Sunshine Coast.

In addition to educating

children on how to stay safe, the foundation also supports young victims of crime.

Catholic High School draws Myall Teen shines on stage

By Rachael VAUGHAN A GROUP of Year 3 students from across Port Stephens and the Myall Coast participated in a very special ceremony this week.

The official naming of what will be their new secondary school.

All Year 3 students from St Brigid’s Primary School, Raymond Terrace, St Michael’s Primary School, Nelson Bay and St Joseph’s Primary School, Bulahdelah attended the official naming ceremony on the grounds of the new Catholic Secondary school in Medowie.

Catherine McAuley Catholic College, Medowie, which will open in 2020, has today been announced as the official name of the Hunter’s newest school which aims to cater to the demand for Catholic education in the Port Stephens region.

Bishop of MaitlandNewcastle, Bill Wright, announced the name of the new school this morning on the Medowie Road site where the planned school will be built.

As part of the announcement, Bishop Bill unveiled a foundation stone and plaque to reveal the new school name.

Present at the unveiling were Director of Catholic Schools, Ray Collins, Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, principals from across the diocese, parent representatives and student representatives

from three local Catholic primary schools who will form part of the first Year 7 cohort.

Bishop Bill said the characteristics of a school under the patronage of Catherine McAuley, grounded in the Mercy traditions of justice, excellence, integrity, courage, hospitality and mercy had inspired the college’s name.

“Catherine McAuley presents a strong and relevant female identity of the Catholic Church and a lift story which can speak to adolescents and young adults in a secondary school,” said Bishop Bill.

The school will eventually cater for 1,200 students, Years 7 to 12 and will feature state of the art learning centres, including a library and recreation areas.

Kate Washington spoke with the groups of excited year 3 students, wishing them good luck for their future studies.

Kate told News Of The Area, “It is very special that they were included in this ceremony in such an important way, they will remember this day for a long time, and i’m sure will keep a record of reports on the ceremony amongst their treasured schooling memories.”

BAILEY Shultz said performing in the NSW State Drama Festival at the Seymour Centre last week was an “incredible” experience.

The 17-year-old from Bulahdelah was selected to take part in the two-day event after his dramatic flair was noticed at the State Drama Camp he attended earlier this year.

Bailey said the highlight of the festival was the incredible atmosphere in the theatre.

“Performing in front of over 600 people was amazing, you walked out onto the stage and the whole audience cheered and screamed to acknowledge you, and then they went dead quiet,” Bailey said.

“That’s when it set in that you were about to perform, it was a real adrenaline rush,” he added.

The annual event showcases the best dramatic talents from public schools across NSW

and was hosted this year by actor Jay Laga’aia who is well-known for his onscreen roles in Playschool, Home and Away and Star Wars.

Jay commented that the performances this year were “such a high standard” and reminded the young rising stars to “dream big and to always find the joy in your performances.”

Bailey told News Of The Area having the opportunity to perform in a group play alongside the best drama students in the state was fantastic.

“We worked with a professional technical crew during rehearsals which was an excellent learning experience,” Bailey said.

“And I got to perform with an amazing talented bunch of people, it was such a fun experience,” he added.

This year’s festival was also streamed live on YouTube.

River Festival a great turn out

By Margie TIERNEY A WINDY day couldn’t sweep away the enthusiasm of the locals and visitors who flocked to the Myall River Festival at Tea Gardens last Saturday.

There was something for everyone, from the 80 street stalls to roving performers and dancing girls.

The wind did hamper the water sports, trampoline and water golf competition but every duck still had it’s day in the ever popular duck derby.

“We have individual ducks and corporate ducks,” said Fiona Mobbs, head of the Tea Gardens Primary School

P&C. “The Surf Lifesavers take the ducks out when the tides going out, and the first duck to the bridge wins the prize,” Fiona told News Of The Area.

‘The winner of the Corporate duck gets their name on the trophy, and all proceeds go to the school.”

Also on hand, were the volunteers from Marine Rescue, there to muster the sail past and ensure all went according to plan with the fireworks and river lanterns.

The team was led by veteran 75 year old Al Ford.

“I want to retire, but they won’t let me,” Al said.

“We work out of Lemon

Tree Passage, and volunteer all year round,” said Clem Doyle.

“If we get a call to a boat in trouble, they radio in, or call, we go,”.

And what River Festival would be complete without the Greenpaws Pet Show now in it’stenth year.

It was a tough decision, with so many worthy entrants, but in the end Best in Show went to ‘Sharbee’, a five year old Labradoodle with a very waggy tail.

Cost of staging the annual event is around 25 thousand dollars and planning is already underway for next year’s Festival.

Frightfully good night out MASSES of young wizards, witches, skeletons and zombies packed into Bulahdelah Bowling Club last weekend for some spooky fun at the Halloween Disco.

The dance floor was rocking early on with some devilish moves as the sounds of Thriller and Monster Mash were pumped out by DJ Fryzin.

Beaming smiles shone from behind the creatively painted faces showing the youngsters ghoulish delight.

Loveday said the disco was a treat.

“I really liked being able to come and have fun with my friends and I liked getting dressed up too,” she said.

As the sun went down and the young trick-or-treaters bid farewell to their friends, an older crowd filed in.

The atmosphere was spooktacular with a cauldron of magical costumes rocking the dance floor into the early hours of the morning.

Allan Freihaut told News Of The Area the disco was a whole lot of fun.

“The night’s been excellent, everyone’s had a ball with their family and friends and made the effort to come fancy dressed,” Mr Freihaut said.

“The turnout been great and it gave everybody the opportunity to come to the club and use the facilities for a fun night out together,” he added.

Progressive improvement dredging Dear News Of The Area, RECENTLY it has been an absolute pleasure to see the progressive improvement in the clarity and colour of the Myall River following the dredging of the natural, Eastern channel the “shortcut”.

It is normal and natural that the river changes temporarily following significant rain.

What is not normal,natural or healthy is the fact that the river was becoming permanently “lake like”— brown, turbid and unsightly because virtually no clean healthy oceanic water could get through

the almost totally blocked Eastern channel prior to the dredging.

Local residents,tourists and businesses in the town are all benefitting from a return of the river to its natural pleasing state.

I believe we all owe a debt of gratitude to the Myall River Action Group,and many other involved community members for their sustained efforts on behalf of the river, and the town.

Our previous council and state and federal elected representatives provided support, including financial support for the needs of the river, and Corrie Island.

OPINION Our current representatives—Ms Kate Washington and Dr David Gillespie have expressed support for the maintenance of an aesthetically attractive river.

Early signs with our new council suggest it too is prepared to invest the significant financial and other resources needed when repeat dredging is required.

It will be a disaster if the river is allowed to return to its appalling pre-dredging state.

Macpherson family gathers

OVER 150 descendants of Charles and Dora Macpherson gathered in Bulahdelah recently for a weekend of reacquaintance and talk.

Nine of Charles and Dora’s eleven children were represented at the reunion with families travelling from as far away as Perth for the celebrations.

The get-together began with a picnic at Mungo Brush which was a popular spot for the Macpherson family in years gone by, particularly around Christmas and New Year for the Mungo Regatta.

The large family attended a Thanksgiving and Worship Service at Bulahdelah Uniting

As part of the celebrations, a large cake made by Robyn Guthrie was cut by two of Charles and Dora’s daughters, Thora and Nancy, to the singing of Auld Lang Syne.

Family members also enjoyed a book compiled

by David Macpherson containing family details, photographs and anecdotes dating back to the 1820’s and a family tree wall chart stretching 20 metres around the church hall.

The gathering moved to

Bulahdelah Showground for a BBQ lunch, tennis, swimming and games.

Some family members also went on a bush walk to the sight where Colin was killed in 1939 out the back of “Montrose,” the original family home.

The families enjoyed a wonderful weekend of sharing and have been blessed with knowing God’s hand upon them.

The event was organised

by Thora-Lou Smith with the assistance of many helpers and had been 12 months in the making.

The mixed doubles winners were Robert Bartlett and Lyn Peirson after winning

four games from four.

The mixed doubles runners up, after a three team playoff, were Paul Syron and Jamie Wheaton.

The ladies highest score winner was Mary Britton scoring 96 points.

The men’s highest score winner was Paul Syron scoring 140 points.

Last year, Bulahdelah Tennis Club held its first “Pink Tennis Day” in support of the Breast Cancer Network of Australia.

The day was delightful, with players and spectators donning their best pink clothes to enjoy a day of tennis, good food and lots of laughter.

All agreed that it should be made an annual event and as a result this year the Bulahdelah Tennis Club planned to run its “Pink Tennis Day” in October.

Unfortunately the planned day was wet, so the day has been postponed to Saturday 5 November starting at 10:30am.

There will be free tennis all

day, competitions, cakes to buy, and a sausage sizzle.

Meredyth said she’d like to see as many people as possible “pink up” and join the fun – whether a tennis player or not.

“Just come along wearing something pink, with a tennis racquet and a good attitude!” she said.

“And don’t forget, it’s not just about having fun, we’ll also be raising money for the Breast Cancer Network – so bring some cash too!” she added.

Bulahdelah Pink Tennis Day this weekend

IT seems more and more people are being touched by breast cancer every year.

Meredyth Rae, the President of Bulahdelah Tennis Club, says that in the past six months she has been astounded by the amount of women in her circle of family and friends that have been affected by Breast Cancer.

“Sixteen years ago I lost my wonderful mother-in-law to breast cancer, and now I have seen a number of friends and family members all be diagnosed with breast cancer.” she told News Of The Area.

Bower Birds Blue Hoarders

By Christian PATTESON HAVE you ever stumbled across a small collection of blue rubbish in the bush and thought nothing of it?

Or looked closer and seen an avenue of interwoven twigs?

You may have found the bower of a Satin Bowerbird.

The male uses his agile bill to weave twigs together and form two walls with a passage in between.

He then collects blue items to decorate the surrounds .

Blue items are what the female seems to like.

If one approaches, the male begins an elaborate dance involving prancing , singing and offering gifts.

If she is interested they mate inside the passageway.

Females later build nondescript nests in trees nowhere near the bower.

The male plays no part

in rearing the young, instead he continues to work on attracting more females.

If the male thinks his bower is not working he destroys it and starts again shifting everything elsewhere .

Males are blackish with a glossy blue sheen and a gleaming lilac eye.

Females and young males are olive green also with a lilac eye.

Young males do not take on their adult plumage until the age of 7.

Before that time, they sneak in and start practicing their work in the bowers of other adult males while they are absent.

In wilderness areas, blue feathers, berries and flowers are used for decoration.

In areas that are closer to urban developments, any bit of manageable blue plastic is hoarded.

That is not to say

leave plastic out for their convenience though of course.

It can be hazardous and ideally natural blue would be better.

Indeed in the 1980s, the main reason milk bottle seals were made to break on opening was to protect bowerbirds from getting the rings stuck around their heads.

Occasionally, these birds build their bowers in shrubby yards in Hawks Nest .

King of the Mountain CLEAR skies and stunning mountain views greeted 160 bowlers who were competing for the title of the 2016 King of the Mountain last weekend.

Held at Bulahdelah Bowling Club, friendly rivalry was present amongst the competitors representing nine clubs including Bulahdelah and Tea Gardens locally and Port Macquarie, Penrith, Taree.

Seventy-five ends were played over the two-day competition with Greg Felton, Gary Alnum and Glenn Chandler from Penrith Men’s Bowling Club claiming the King of the Mountain title.

The annual tournament is now in its 31st year.

Bulahdelah Men’s Bowling Club Secretary Ken Southern said the highlight of the competition was seeing everyone getting involved and enjoying it.
