National Missing Persons Week, stay connected By Daniel SAHYOUN
q
REUNION: Mrs Sandra McBride with her son Damien and daughters Jess, Kaytie and Amy.
COMMUNITY members are encouraged to stay connected with loved ones as part of this year’s National Missing Persons Week which runs from 31 July – 6 August. This year’s theme “Stay Connected,” reminds us that for every missing person, a dozen more people are affected in some way. Bulahdelah resident Sandra McBride knows personally the effect a missing person can have on a family. Mrs McBride lost contact with her son Damien when
he was six years old. Following a search spanning over three decades, Mrs McBride was able to reunite with her son in an emotional family reunion last year. Mrs McBride stresses the importance of staying connected and encourages people who have left home for any reason to contact their families. “Family members are already distraught that you have disappeared and they just want to know that you are safe," she said. "If you run away, just

Levi’s night with the stars
EVERY child has an idol when they’re little. For eight year old Levi Hurstfield, that idol is his favourite musician, Jake Bugg. Jake Bugg is an English musician, singer and songwriter. Levi’s love for Jake Bugg’s music started when he heard him on the radio in his Dad’s truck. From then on, it was all he wanted to listen to. Levi has Down Syndrome, and his mother Olivia takes every opportunity to make sure Levi has the same opportunities as other children. Levi has benefited greatly from using Auslan as a means of communication, so Olivia began studying Auslan at the Deaf Society of NSW in May this year. Levi has loved learning all the new signs his mother has been learning.
Olivia saw an opportunity with Levi’s love for Jake Bugg’s songs, and the two began looking up the lyrics to Jake’s songs, learning the new signs for the lyrics and practicing them while singing. Olivia told News Of The Area “Signing through songs is a great way to learn new signs and it combines Levi’s two favourite things. It’s been a fantastic learning tool for Levi, and he’s made wonderful improvements.” Levi attends Karuah Public School, and last week received an award from school for great pronunciation of words whilst reading. Singing has opened up a whole new world for Levi to practice his pronunciation and increase his vocabulary. Levi is also teaching his two-year-old brother
Callum, who has a speech delay, new signs to alleviate frustration in everyday tasks. The boys like to practice signing together Last week, the Hurstfield family took a trip to Sydney to see Jake Bugg in concert at the State Theatre. Levi had a wonderful night and signed his little heart out.

Madden said the Pony Club would allow ease of access for locals wishing to participate in all kinds of sports connected with horses and riding. “The closest club is in Stroud and it is difficult to have to continually transport horses there,” Mrs Madden said. “So far, we’re very happy with the interest the club has generated in the community and we hope that it will take off.” Once officially

Although the Bulahdelah Pony Club has not been operational for the past five years, Mrs Madden told News Of The Area the sporting and leisure club had been a part of the community for several decades prior. “The club ceased due to a lack of members, with locals wishing to

hall, students continually stopped the bearded man in red to ask the question, “Have I been naughty or nice?”
With wide-eyes and beaming smiles, the children flocked to Santa patiently waiting their turn to whisper,
“All I want for Christmas.” Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 sat down together at tables decorated with colourful tinsel, bows and Christmas baubles. Laughter, chit-chat and conversation created a festive vibe around the hall as a traditional baked dinner complete with dessert was served to the appreciative crowd of students and staff. Student Caitlin Condie said she thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas in July celebration. “It was really good, I liked being able to enjoy lunch with my friends,” she said. “My favourite part of it was seeing Santa.” The Christmas in July Celebration was organised by the P&C Committee with 16 parents and community volunteers on hand throughout the day to assist.
Principal Mr Mark Clemson said the Christmas lunch was thoroughly enjoyed by both the students and staff of the school. “Each year, we have all the students and staff sit down for a lunch, served by our P&C Committee who have given up their time to organise and allow this to happen,” Mr Clemson said. “It is a very enjoyable experience for everyone, especially for the students who get to sit with their friends and see Santa.” Mr Clemson told News Of The Area the staff and students are very grateful to the P&C who organise and work at events such as the Christmas in July lunch. “Without their efforts, we would not be able to have these experiences,” Mr Clemson said. Students and staff are already eagerly looking forward to next year’s Christmas in July luncheon.
Karuah fire brigade receives donation from music festival A spokesperson for the KPA, said the aim of the Music Festival was to bring people to Karuah and have them stay for the weekend, injecting money into the local economy. “It is estimated the injection this year was around $100,000,” the spokesperson said. “It would be wonderful if we could be self-sufficient, but we will continue to need sponsorship for the next few years at least.” This year’s event was sponsored by Hunter Quarries along with further
sponsorship and assistance from Port Stephens Council. The KPA spokesperson said Festival organisers are currently on the search for a major sponsor to add to the ones they already have. “Once this is achieved, we can look to donating more to community groups and projects,” they said. “The festival has grown for the last seven years and we believe it will continue to grow.” The annual family friendly event is well-supported by both the local community and visitors to the area.

All teams to feature in semi’s LEAGUE
By Neil REYNOLDS TEA Gardens Hawks consolidated a spot in the 2016 semi-final series with an emphatic 70 point to 14 win over Newcastle University on Saturday. They now sit in 4th spot, 1 point behind Cardiff, who will host the Hawks in the last round. A top 3 position is a preferred finish, and is still achievable. Windale remain at the top and will take out the minor
premiership. For the Hawks, Anthony Cameron was voted best in attack, with 3 tries, best in defence, and the “player’s player” award. Cameron was awarded the player of the round in the Lofty’s Crane Services number 18 jersey. The supporter’s award was won by Cjay Misifosa. Referees points went to Billy Greentree, who scored two tries and kicked nine goals. Greentree’s bag of points elevated him to the “A” grade point scoring lead. The Hawks travel to play Newcastle University in
round 17 on Sunday. The game will kick off at 3pm, preceded by the Lady Hawks at 2pm. The “Hawks Nest Golf Club” Lady Hawks are assured a top 3 finals spot after defeating Morisett on the weekend. They have one game against competition leaders, Newcastle University this week, before a bye in the last round. This year’s elimination and qualifying semi-finals will be held at Lakeside Sports Complex, with the final at Kurri Sportsground, and the grand-final at West’s Harker Oval.

Myall Pharmacy I am pleased to announce the renovations at Myall Pharmacy Tea Gardens are finally completed. I would like to thank our Customers for their patience during this disrupted period. I would also like to thank my staff for their patience and co operation. The improved layout of both pharmacy stores will enable us to provide new pharmacy services to our local community. This will start with Naturopath Anne Ullmann N.D., D.B.M. attending both pharmacies one day per week, commencing Monday 22nd August 2016: Hawks Nest 9am—12am Tea Gardens 1pm—5pm Please contact the relevant store to book your appointment. Anne prefers the first consultation to be of one hour duration to allow sufficient time to relay your health history and for an evaluation. A initial consultation involves past medical history, present health issues, zinc taste test, iridology and recommendation for supplementation, lifestyle and dietary changes etc. Anne will charge her usual consultation fees (with discount for pensioners etc) One hour: $85.00. Half hour: $55.00 Anne is in possession of a provider number which will allow people with healthcare extras cover to claim a rebate. Graeme Hackworthy.

Pint-sized speedboater wins State Championship By Daniel SAHYOUN
NINE-YEAR old Riley Ford has been named NSW Powerboat
Racing Champion after recent competition wins in Taree and Sydney. Competing in the J1 Class
for the youngest racers, competitors came from all corners of the State to show off their speed on the water in a bid for points. The St Joseph’s Primary School student hit speeds
win this vital match in front of Gloucester’s parochial home support base with the final score being Myall Coast Mudcrabs 47, Gloucester Cockies 14. The Muddies were best served in the forwards by James Farmer with his continual tigerish defence charging into the rucks and mauls and was ably supported by his bro
of over 45 km/h to score comfortable wins in both competition rounds to claim the State Champion title. Riley told News Of The Area competing in the sport was very exciting. “I enjoy the speed, freedom and adrenaline that comes from racing and I really like being my own boss out on the water,” he said. “It sometimes makes me feel a bit nervous, but it’s a lot of fun.” The pint-sized racer became involved in competitive racing last year after watching speed boat competitions in Taree with his family. Riley’s father Martin said the Sydney race was Riley’s first trophy competition. “He didn’t expect to win and he was only in it for fun, we were all surprised when he came home with four trophies and a medal,” Mr Ford said. “Now that he has taken out the State Championship, we are encouraging him to take it more seriously, and he’s got plenty of time to continue to improve as well.” Children can participate in CONTINUED Page 10
