A Bill has been presented to Parliament to institute Parenting Management Hearings for family law disputes.

Parenting Management Hearings are intended to fill a gap between Family Dispute Resolution (mediation) and contested Court proceedings in parenting matters. They are intended to provide self-represented litigants with an alternative to the Court process for resolving parenting disputes. Parenting Management Hearings will be conducted by a Panel who will direct the lines of enquiry and the focus of the hearing; and questions will be asked by Panel members, rather than traditional cross-examination.The Panel will be required to have specialist skills and expertise in relevant fields including family law, family dispute resolution, family violence, psychology, mental health and child development, and will be an independent statutory authority. Determinations made by the Panel

Both parents must agree to participate in Parenting Management Hearings, and families will still be required to attempt to resolve their disputes through Family Dispute Resolution before participating in the Parenting Management Hearings.

As part of the process, families would be linked to other support services, such as counselling and family violence services, with the intention of minimizing the intensity and duration of conflict, and to try to provide support to families and children. The Parenting Management Hearings are intended to encourage and support families to resolve their parenting disputes in a prompt and informal way, through a more user-friendly and lessadversarial forum than the traditional Court system.

of interesting subjects,” Rotary’s Ian Mackenzie Smith told News Of The Area. “There are titles on Sport, Cooking, Arts and Craft, Gardening and many more.” “The favourite table is the kid’s books.” “There are hundreds of Children’s volumes from

Community Grants TWO community groups in Bulahdelah will share more than $20,000 in State Government funding to support improvements to local facilities. Bulahdelah Lions Club received $10,900 for a ride on mower to assist with the maintenance of Lions Park and Bulahdelah Chamber

of Commerce and Tourism was awarded $9,900 for the construction of picnic shelters in the Mountain Park. The funding is from the NSW Government’s Community Partnership Building program which aims to create more vibrant and inclusive communities. Myall Lakes MP Stephen

Bromhead recently visited Bulahdelah to announce the successful projects and said the money will make a positive difference in the local area. “These grants are important for smaller communities to help them get the amenities that larger areas enjoy,” Mr Bromhead said. “We know that for every dollar that we give, communities get three or four times the benefit from it.” Mr Bromhead said there was strong competition for the $300,000 up for grabs in this funding round, with the successful projects selected from 66 applications totalling more than $3 million. “I love to see the smaller areas get their fair share,” he said. “We’ve seen the wonderful benefits of this program in the Myall Lakes with a huge amount of varied projects funded over the years.”

THE late Jim (James) Richards will always be remembered as one-of-akind, a true gentleman, an accomplished musician and dedicated volunteer. With the festive season upon us, there is no better time to reflect on the enormous contribution Jim made to the Bulahdelah and District communities. Jim was a man of many talents and played the organ, piano, guitar and accordion. He was a devoted christian, and served as pastor of the Bulahdelah Community Church of Christ for 33 years. Jim was thoroughly involved his community, and will be remembered for his musical contribution to the local ANZAC Day services over many decades. He also lead the Hospital Christmas Carols for many years, regularly played for residents at the nursing home, performed in community concerts and had a successful dance band. Jim was born in 1928 and was part of the Bulahdelah community his entire life. He left school in the early 1940’s and went to work for his brother Mervyn as a mechanic at the Stroud Street garage. Friends recall there wasn’t much about cars,

trucks and lawn mowers that Jim didn’t know and there was never a mechanical problem he couldn’t fix. Jim then worked for the Bulahdelah Bus company and held the position of depot manager until he retired. After a trip to Asia, a retirement present from his boss, he was straight back into his volunteer work, keeping the nursing home vehicle running and serving on the Board. Jim was also an avid sports person and enjoyed driving speed boats in the Boxing Day Regatta’s at Mungo Brush and

was made a life member of Bulahdelah Bowling Club. Many people will remember Jim’s endless energy, compassionate nature, and the trusty old Volkswagen van he used to transport his treasured organ around the community. He was also a dedicated husband to his wife Nola and a loving father and grandfather. Jim passed away earlier in 2017 aged 88 after a brave battle with illness. He will always be remembered as one of the regions most well-respected citizens.

o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,

I spent a lot of time coming up with appropriate gifts for my husband for Christmas. He opened the first one and said nothing. I jokingly suggested I regift it and he agreed. He opened the second one, which I had unfortunately left the price tag on, and he said, “You didn’t pay that much for this did you?” My daughter then ran to her room and screamed that he had ruined Christmas. We are still getting over it. Mrs JF, One Mile Dear Mrs JF,

Your husband sounds like the Christmas grinch. He obviously hasn’t been taught the subtleties of gift receiving. This is a skill developed over many years of receiving things that we don’t actually want, or even need, but we still have the ability to show, even feign, delight. It is a key learning area. Perhaps your husband has a deepseated resentment of Christmas that stems from childhood. Nothing short of the psychoanalyst’s couch will be able to cure that one. But you could offer him some cues for the future. These are appropriate comments when you receive a gift you don’t really like: “You shouldn’t have.” (You really shouldn’t have). “I have no words.” (If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything). “I’m feeling overwhelmed.” (I’m going to need a couple of drinks to come up with an appropriate response). “Oh, wow, it matches the gift that you gave me last year.” (There’s a whole range of this hideous stuff?). “I know the perfect spot for this.” (I knew that storage cabinet would come in handy). “It’s perfect. Did you keep the receipt in case I need the next size up?” (My left leg wouldn’t fit into those shorts, you moron). I hope that 2018 is an improvement on this year, Mrs JF, and that your husband becomes the man you deserve. Interestingly, we have the same initials. You must be a lovely person.

WINDA WOPPA: Cheeky Little Chicks.

Heavy Vehicle Program By Dr David GILLESPIE MP LOCAL councils are encouraged to work with local residents and industry stakeholder to identify and priorities upgrade projects and submit applications for funding under the Federal Coalition Government’s Round Six of the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP). Almost $100 million is available under the initiative which has a long history of success in delivering safer, more productive heavy vehicle operations. Funding available under the HVSPP is generous with

the Australian Government providing up to $5 million to cover 50 per cent of the total cost of each project. The Australian Government is providing state, territory and local governments funding to assist with road upgrades that will improve heavy vehicle safety and freight efficiency. Better road and heavy vehicle infrastructure means better productivity and safer roads. Round Six follows the almost $190 million already provided by the Federal Coalition Government over the previous two rounds to help fund more than 135 projects across the national road network in the past three years.

avoid the dredge sand hills at Winda Woppa for the sake of the ‘Little Terns’. The dredge pile has become a nesting site and hatchery for the tiny birds which arrived from South East Asia last month. “It seems Little Terns love Hawks Nest,” Jill Madden told News Of The Area. “To date this year there are 90 nests, 110 eggs and so far 24 chicks and more appear every day.” In the past only a few nests have been found but it seem the Little Terns have found a place that they love and have spread the word. While the area has been signposted, visitors with children, or those walking their dog are being asked to be extremely vigilant and avoid the sand hills.

Successful projects have previously included the construction of extended acceleration lanes from heavy vehicle rest areas, major intersection upgrades, sealing and road widening works, and road realignments. In this round, the application period has been extended to 15 weeks to provide applicants with enough time to prepare proposals. The HVSPP is open for applications until 30 March 2018. The Guidelines for completing HVSPP applications and more information about the assessment process, critical dates, and key contacts, are available at: http:// investment.infrastructure. g ov. a u / i n f ra s t r u c t u re _ investment/heavy_vehicle_ safety_and_productivity. aspx

Jazz Concert for Tea Gardens Award-winning pianist Michael Harvey will be joined in two stunning “Cool Jazz” concerts to be held Sunday afternoons, 7th and 14th January 2018 with his “Friends”, three outstanding artists, Pete Dilosa, Khristina Joy, and Jill Harvey.

AWARD-WINNING pianist Michael Harvey will be joined in two stunning “Cool Jazz” concerts to be held Sunday afternoons, 7th and 14th January 2018 with his “Friends”, three outstanding artists, Pete Dilosa, Khristina Joy, and Jill Harvey. The ‘Quartet’ will revisit some of the great jazz standards and cool melodies and rhythms of the swing era. Each member brings a wealth of experiences to these performances. Pete Dilosa who is credited as being Lead Trumpet on the Mike Walsh Show and The Midday Show for many years and has been privileged to work with many

of the world’s great music stars over the last 30 years, including: Shirley Bassey, Sammy Davis Jnr, Bob Hope, Liza Minelli, James Morrison, Natalie Cole, Olivia NewtonJohn and Sir Cliff Richard. Pete is regarded as one of Australia’s greatest exponents of the trumpet and has played lead with several fantastic bands - The Daly Wilson Big Band, The Glen Miller Band, Ed Wilson Big Band. Khristina Joy has enjoyed a wonderful music career as the featured vocalist with bands like The Ed Wilson Big Band, and legendary musicians Julian Lee, Bob Barnard, and George Golla.

Khristina’s vibrant singing style and interpretation have made her popular with both audiences and peers alike. Jill Harvey began her career in Victoria, appearing on several shows with upand-coming stars like The Bee Gees, Johnny Chester. She was often a guest on ‘pop’ TV Shows “The Go Show”, “Teen Scene”, and “Happening”. While performing in New Zealand, Jill discovered that her deep husky voice also suited the ‘swing sound’, the sound of Julie London, and more recently Diana Krall. Join this talented bunch for an entertaining and exciting afternoon of cool swing. Tickets are one sale now with Donna Howarth at Altitude Travel Shop, 10 Myall Quays, for tickets at $25 each. The concert will be held in St. Stephen’s Catholic Church Hall in Witt Street Tea Gardens with a complimentary glass of Champagne on arrival. As is customary, the concerts will provide a substantial donation towards the church’s fund raising program.

Water Safety First! FROM Page 16 Centre, Tilligerry Aquatic Centre, and Kurri Kurri Aquatic and Fitness, have instigated a new safety program. Ms Tanya Brunckhorst, Regional Manager of Royal Life Saving told News Of The Area, “The Keep Watch wristband is for every children five and under.” “They will be given a wristband that is compulsory to wear so the lifesavers know they need to be within an arm’s reach of the parent or adult in charge of the child.” The wristbands are a waterproof paper type, similar to what people get given at paid recreation events and do not interfere with children’s movements in the pool. The wristbands, Ms Brunckhorst said are about, “Identifying the nonswimmers and making parents more responsible and the children under their

care being in arm’s reach.” “The lifesavers are not babysitters.” Ms Nicole Dunn, the Area Manager said, “Any child in the pool without an adult supervising them will be asked by a lifesaver to leave and find their parent or caregiver.” “We will explain the safety issues to the responsible adult.” “It is designed around education of parents and families when they come to the Centre.” Belgravia facilities have recently undergone a safety audit, with Mr Troy Hughes, the Operations Manager pleased with the result, telling News Of The Area, Lakeside scored 95%, Tomaree 94%, Tilligerry 89% and Kurri Kurri 93%.” “These are all excellent results.” The audits are conducted by the Royal Life Saving NSW Aquatic Safety Check and these results are considered exemplary.

Church donates to the Community By Margie TIERNEY WHEN so many of us have been on the receiving end of a gift at Christmas, the

Anglican Church has once again been giving to the Myall community. “In appreciation of the generous support given

by the local community to the Tea Gardens Anglican Church Op Shop, it has been the practice over recent years to donate all proceeds from their Myall River Festival stall and the Op Shop Santa’s Christmas Toy Shop to local charities,”

Parish Secretary Marie Blanch said. “This year we are pleased to advise that this year’s proceeds of over $4,000 was shared equally between the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service, the Tea Gardens Clinic Bus, Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Surf Life Savings Club and the Tea Gardens Public School. Each group received $1,000.

Kicking off in January, there's a range of activities to suit almost every taste if you're a primary school

student. Starting with special activities including Twilight Storytime, Science on the Move, Creative Painting and the Crazy Daisy Magic Show and Pirate Party, you'll be kept busy. And for busy hands and creative types, there's Scratch Art, Bunnings DIY workshop,

Drama Workshops and Kite Making on offer. Add to that movie screenings, and games sessions including puzzles, colouring in, virtual reality experience, Kids Bingo, Board Games Elimination and Indoor Relays, and there's no time for "I'm bored" these holidays!
