Debris continues to wash ashore By Rachael VAUGHAN PORT Stephens MP Kate Washington has backed up concerns from Hawks Nest and Tomaree Peninsula residents about the ongoing incidence of rubbish from the YM Efficiency washing onshore. Residents report that rubbish continues to appear regularly on Jimmys Beach and around the Fingal Headland. With school holidays about to begin, residents are particularly concerned about the impact this ongoing rubbish will have on the region’s reputation as a holiday destination. NSW Maritime has advised residents to report any rubbish they see to 13 12 36. Locally based contractors from

Return to Country By Rachael VAUGHAN WORIMI and Biripi woman Pauline Syron-Coxon, an Aboriginal artist born in Bulahdelah, has returned home with a special piece of artwork that will now live in the hometown of her family. Pauline is the eldest daughter of Barry and Clare Syron and the granddaughter of the late Nana Syron, who the Bulahdelah bridge is named after. Nana Syron was born on the Barrington near Gloucester and is a traditional Aboriginal woman of the Worimi and Biripi Nations. Pauline’s Pop Bob Syron was also an Aboriginal man from Forster which is part of the Worimi nation. The Syron family moved to Bulahdelah in the 1950’s and all attended Bulahdelah Central school. Pauline is from a large family who are located throughout the district. Pauline’s inspiration for Art is from her Nana as a storyteller. Pauline told News Of The Area,
“I could never tell stories as well as my Nana did, so I did what I know I can do well, and I keep her stories alive with storytelling through my artworks.” “Nana could always make good of any situation, and find humour in anything, even the tough times. She was a very special lady.” “I began painting in 1999, the year Nana Syron passed away, and I was inspired to use art as my story telling. I paint scenes that are uplifting and share Nana’s message of love, hope and joy,” she said. Pauline has been living in the Snowy Mountains for the past six years, and has built a successful art gallery and business. Her next endeavour is to set up
my Artist Studio at her home on the Karuah River for this summer. Pauline said, “I will be actively travelling from one studio space to another for the near future with my goal to be permanently back home.” One very special piece of art has found its way back home, and that is the incredible flannel flower piece pictured with Pauline, and it’s proud new owner, Denise Haynes from R and R Property. Denise told News Of The Area, “I have been watching Pauline’s work for so long, just waiting for that right piece for our office that would fit in with the history of our building here in Bulahdelah.” “When the Flannel Flower

Elder abuse is defined a as ‘a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person.’ Elder abuse can take various forms, including: - physical abuse - psychological or emotional abuse - sexual abuse - financial abuse - neglect The NSW Government, amongst other things, has established the NSW Elder Abuse Helpline and Resource
Unit as a part of the NSW Aging Strategy. This service aims to assist people in preventing, identifying and dealing with elder abuse. Elder abuse, particularly in terms of financial abuse, is something which solicitors may also assist in preventing. The appointment of an appropriate attorney may limit the scope of financial abuse by having an appropriate person assist in management of an elderly person’s finances. Furthermore, by having estate planning advice provided by a solicitor with extensive knowledge in the area, it is the case that abuses such as undue influence over a person to change his/her Will may be picked up on more easily. Combating elder abuse is a complex problem which requires the assistance and input of many people, including members of the legal profession.

Mungo Brush Crash WiFi q SPEED AND ALCOHOL BLAMED: Mungo Brush Road.
By Margie TIERNEY SPEED and alcohol reportedly played a major part in a single vehicle crash on Mungo Brush Road near Hawks Nest. The Falcon sedan, being driven by a 50 year old man from Karuah, lost control on a bend heading north about two kilometres from the Hawks Nest Golf Club, last Sunday. The Falcon rolled a number of times before coming to rest on its roof. Just before the crash, a woman and her two children in a car heading south, told Police they had to quickly swerve to avoid a head on collision. Police believe the driver of the Falcon reached speeds of up to 140 kilometres an hour before the crash.
Tea Gardens Senior Constable Dave Coyle said, “Drug and alcohol tests have been taken from both the 50 year old driver and the 56 year old male passenger, a resident of Tea Gardens.” Both men were taken to hospital, the passenger in a serious condition with internal injuries. Police expect to lay charges, relating to drug and alcohol, speed and driving without a license. With the School Holiday period in full swing, police are urging motorists to slow down with speed still the biggest killer on our roads. Driver fatigue also plays a major factor in crashes, and motorists are being encouraged to use the driver fatigue rest areas and driver reviver stops.

for Holiday Park
PARLIAMENTARY Secretary for Digital Inclusion and Port Stephens Duty MLC, Catherine Cusack today visited Reflections Holiday Park in Hawks Nest with Liberal candidate, Jaimie Abbott to announce a $316,000 loan from the Berejiklian Government for internet connectivity upgrades throughout the Park. “Investing in infrastructure which supports regional tourism is a major priority for the Berejiklian Government and I am so glad to be able to announce this,” said Ms Cusack. “This loan will provide the much needed capital for Reflections to continue installing WiFi infrastructure across nine of their Parks.” Liberal candidate for Port Stephens, Jaimie Abbott said proper connectivity in holiday parks is a giant step forward. “Hawks Nest is a pristine corner of Port Stephens and I am really glad the Berejiklian Government is providing this financial assistance to improve internet access. By improving the experience of visitors to this beautiful spot we will encourage more overnight stays, providing a boost to our local businesses,” said Ms Abbott Works will include
installation of 12m and 16m poles for microwave links as well as upgrading 2,400 metres of fibre. In addition to improving the guest experience, the infrastructure will improve the network for Park Management and centrally maintained security monitoring. “The network will soon be completed at Reflections Hawks Nest. Seal Rocks and Forster Beach Parks are now live and these school holidays will ensure the wireless capacity is properly put to the test,” said Ms Abbott. Parks in the next stage of
connectivity works include Coffs Harbour, Nambucca Heads, Bermagui, Tuncurry, Scotts Head and Evans Head. Reflections Holiday Park’s Finance and IT Executive Manager, Michelle Griffin said they would continue building the foundations for a better digital experience for their guests. “Delivery of this project also enables mobile phone coverage where mobile signals are currently unavailable. Previously, Hawks Nest and Seal Rocks Parks had nil to minimal coverage, which meant guests
couldn’t communicate with friends and family during their holidays with us,” said Ms Griffin “This is a significant investment in technology and support from the Berejiklian Government and is allowing us to do more sooner.” The loan is being provided through the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund which provides funding for recreational infrastructure, repairs and maintenance projects, pest and weed control, and environmental initiatives.

Clean out your Closets for a Good Cause By Margie TIERNEY WITH the Myall River Festival just over a week away, it’s not too late to make a contribution to one of the Festival’s most popular attractions. ‘Buy My Wardrobe’ will be back again, proudly presented by the ‘Pearls of Port Stephens’. ‘The Pearls’ as they are affectionately known, is a group of women who combine friendship and fun with fundraising.
“Thank you to those who have responded so far with their donations for our ‘Buy My Wardrobe’ campaign,” The Pearl’s Kerry Patterson said. “It’s lovely to live in such a warm community of people who care about each other.” But Kerry added, “It’s not too late to donate.” “If you have any clothes that you have decided no longer fit or are ‘sooo’…..last year, why not pay it forward and donate to our cause,” Kerry said.
Open Day for Craft By Margie TIERNEY THE Myall Coast Arts and Craft Centre will be throwing open its doors to the community later this month when it holds its annual Open Day on Saturday 20 October. “All members of our community are invited to come along to see what this wonderful community facility has to offer,” Janette Coppock said.
“Some of our talented members will be on hand, demonstrating crafts such as ceramics, woodwork, leather work, spinning, art, mosaics, quilting, just to name a few.” “Whether a long time resident or new to town, we hope you will be able to come along some time during the day to see our members at work on many of these crafts in our four large, well equipped craft rooms.”
“You not only will gain space in your wardrobe but someone else will get joy from your offering and of course our farmers will benefit.” Last year the Pearls raised over $2,000 for Harry’s House in Stockton, a respite home for children with cancer and their families. Our local pre school and Tea Gardens Primary School also received cheques for $500. On the day of the Festival, Saturday 13 October, the
The Craft Centre, began its life many years ago in a makeshift building called ‘The Hut’ on Hawks Nest Golf Course. It had just four members. Over the decades and many fundraisers later, it’s now home to over 200 members in an impressive purpose built building on Myall Street, Tea Gardens. Janette Coppock told News Of The Area, “This is a great opportunity to get started on a new interest and make new friends, especially if you are new to

Next the Fours, this team was holding 3rd spot in the Competition at this stage. Unfortunately a loss in the Fours put them out of the winners circle. Great effort ladies, you did well. Coming events: 4th October the final of the Open Consistency between Robyn Beaumont and Maynie Roberts. The 9th October Round 1 of the Minor Pairs. The 19th October Oncology Day. Thanks to all of our local business’s/community members that have already generously donated to this cause. Your response as always is magnificent.
SPORT 60th Birthday Celebrations The Bulahdelah Women’s Bowling Club has just celebrated an important milestone, its 60th Birthday.
By Margie TIERNEY
THE Bulahdelah Women’s Bowling Club has just celebrated an important milestone, its 60th Birthday. Coinciding with the celebrations was the annual Queen of the Mountain competition with 60 bowlers keen to take home the crown. Twenty teams from Karuah, Tuncurry Beach, Tuncurry Forster Sporties, Taree West, Taree Railway, Taree Leagues, Gloucester, Wingham, Black Head, Old Bar and Harrington all travelled to the foot of craggy Mount Alum to take part in the tournament. President of the Bulahdelah Women’s Bowling Club, Mary-Anne Hutley told News Of The Area, “Controlling Body Penny Bonner (Hon Sec), scorekeeper Rod Landsdowne and umpire Ken Southern were on hand to ensure the smooth running of play.” The first game of 15 ends, three-bowl
triples kicked off at 9.30am with all players in high hopes that the forecast rain would stay at bay to allow both games to be completed. But the Rain Gods were having none of that with a severe storm hitting during the lunch break and after a considerable wait it was deemed too dangerous to play on into the afternoon. “The Queen of the Mountain Title and tiara travelled south to Karuah team with a margin of 16 to the team of Judy Green (lead), Marian Lilley (second) and Helen Priest (skip).” Mary-Anne said, “They were closely followed by two teams with a margin of 15 and after a countback by Match Secretary Beatrice Weekes and scorekeeper Rod Lansdowne second place was awarded to the Beresfield team of Gladys Dunning (lead), Narelle Bunt (second) and Pam Martin (skip) with third place going to the Wingham team of Jo Duncan (lead), Lillian Cross (second) and Laurelle Dennes (skip).”

Dear News Of The Area
AFTER a few years of absent the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club Inc. was once again invited to participate in the Riverside Festival. We are delighted to assist in promoting this vital local Festival by arranging 15 Veteran, Vintage, Classic and Unique vehicles to be on display in the area, as before from Tillerman Restaurant to the Gallery. Due to a high number of new members having joined our Motor Club during last two years there will be some interesting vehicles on display. Many elderly car owners in town will recognize some of the vehicle types they owned or drove in their younger years. On display: Austin Healey 1956, BMW 325 Convertible, VW Scirocco GT 1985, Ford Mustang 1964, Ford Falcon 1970, Camero 1973, Datsun 2000 Sport 1968, Holden Ute 1956, Citron 2-CV 1985, MGB Roadster 1964, Porsche 356 1963, etc. The Motor Club will also have an Information Stand answering any questions visitors like to ask about the popular local Motor Club, annual Community Aid Event Day called ‘Motorfest’. Juergen Seil Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club Inc.
Dear Jasminda,
Craft Group OPINION Gardens Visit Dear News Of The Area A GROUP of twenty of us had a thoroughly enjoyable day at the magnificent Hunter Valley Gardens which were opened 15 years ago, how time gets away. After morning tea at the neighboring village and a spot of shopping we entered the gardens and had a light lunch in the cafe after which we took the train ride around the eight kilometers of pathways and saw ten differently themed

display gardens, unfortunately we were a couple of weeks too early for the roses in bloom, but it was a beautiful day and the gardens looked spectacular with the spring blossoms appearing. I am sure we were all inspired from the experience and will use some of the ideas in our own gardens, be it on a smaller scale. Pam and Eddie Smith Wednesday Craft Group

Every time my 14-year-old son gets on anything with wheels, he seems to injure himself. On the first day of the school holidays, he was riding a motorised bike, braked too heavily and went head over turkey resulting in a five hour wait at the local medical centre, stitches and lots of whinging and moping around the house. What can he do that is safe? Mrs HL, Tea Gardens
Dear Mrs HL, I FEEL your pain. I was also at the local clinic this week after my son came off a skateboard. In fact, there were many mums and a few dads with the same aggrieved look because they’d paid thousands of dollars for a Port Stephens holiday only to spend it in a waiting room reading a four-month-old Women’s Weekly and watching their water wonderland escape fade fast. The truth is, there is no safe activity for a 14-year-old boy. They manage to make everything as dangerous as negotiating a landmine. Get them to try synchronised swimming and they’ll get the nose clip somestuck in their ear. Suggest ten pin bowling and they’ll end up going down the lane with the ball. A game of soccer will quickly turn into a medical emergency. Hide and seek will result in a child lost forever. Table tennis will lead to an aggressive backhand shot that gives little Johnny concussion. All you are really left with is gaming. No, then you have to worry about the dark web, repetitive strain injury, anger management, insomnia and nervous tension. How about gardening? Mmmm. Pollen allergies, bee stings, ant bites, thorns in the fingers and stinging nettles. Cooking? Exploding saucepans, flesh wounds, third degree burns from the Thermomix, the loss of a finger . . . How about drawing or reading? They are the only activities I can think of that won’t end in disaster, though paper cuts can be extremely painful. Best of luck till you can return the little treasure back to the safe environment of his local school. Carpe diem, Jasminda

Men’s Bowls week Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA
26 SEPTEMBER They said the rain would come, and it did! The good field of 51 players were restricted to just one game before the heavens opened after one end of the afternoon game. With the fate of the winning teams determined by
the luck of the draw, the Palm Lake connection of; Doug Naylor, and Alan Greenhalgh winning on the grass and Rob Young, Greg Porter and Keith Smith on the synthetic. The Myall Bistro Voucher was won again by Barry Goode. Players celebrated the end of the football season some turning up in their favourite strip but none supported the Grand Finalists.
Brian McPhie went all the way, proudly displaying the wooded spoon! 28 September Not many players took advantage of the glorious spring weather today with only 14 turning out for the Friday Open Pairs. Vic Garlick and Dennis Wilberforce claimed the bragging rights. In other news: Organisers of the Palm
Junior Referee of the Year ZAC Fletcher officiated in his third season this year and made the progression into the senior ranks. He centred 6 Ladies matches early in the season along with various WPL and NPL games. Zac was always available to officiate junior games on a Saturday morning in Bulahdelah before he would then travel to afternoon senior appointments. Zac was an Assistant Referee for 6 Premier League fixtures during the year, and centred 2 Men’s League matches, performing well on both occasions. He also was an Assistant Referee on the Southern Men’s Grand Final and finished his season with a centre in the U15 Zone Championship match last weekend. Congrats on a great year Zac. We look forward to seeing you progress further into senior appointments in season 2019.

Lake Pairs, scheduled for 13/14 October, have decided to keep the entry sheet open until the event is fully subscribed. There are some well credentialed players entered for this tournament but there are bound to be upsets from those with no reputations to protect. Bowlers would do well to mark Friday 19 October on their calendar so that they do not miss the annual Oncology Day organised by the Women’s Bowling Club.

All about the position Majestic Views 6 Higgins Close TEA GARDENS PRICE: $535,000
A 300m level walk to Tea Gardens Public School and 400m to Tillermans Café Restaurant – this home is all about the position. The cottage is approx. 26 years old and is single level brick and tile, set on approx 600 sqm of level land. In the quiet cul de sac of Higgins Close, the property has been well maintained and much loved. An open plan living and dining space is light filled from windows at the front and rear. The kitchen is functional

The master bedroom features an en-suite and could easily accommodate a king size bed. A family bathroom with a shower over the tub is great for long soaks at the end of the day. The laundry is large with an additional WC, and could easily include more storage and cabinetry. A tandem garage runs the depth of the house and
provides undercover access. Side access allows for parking of the campervan and boat in an undercover area. A gate on this side would enclose the fenced back yard. There are veggie gardens and yet there is still plenty of room for the children to play. By Margie TIERNEY IT’S been a long hard week of competition for young Hawks Nest athlete Keira McGregor, but very rewarding at the same time. The 12 year old recently competed at the NSW Combined Independent Schools Sports Council, known as CIS, and won four gold medals at the Sydney competition. Keira came first in the 100 metres, 200 metres, triple jump and long jump. The CIS is the forerunner to the

NSW All Schools Track and Field Championships. 1,700 athletes from all over the State converge on Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre for the four day event. The event incorporates athletes from all sectors of the school system, including Government, Catholic and Independent, and has a long and rich history in NSW, being a breeding ground for many of NSW’s best athletes, including Matt Shirvington, Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, Jana Pittman, and recent Olympians Dani Stevens, Fabrice Lapierre, Ryan Gregson, Annelise Rubie,

Madeline Hills, Michelle Jenneke, Victoria Mitchell, Ella Nelson, Eloise Wellings, Milly Clark, Jessica Thornton and Scott Westcott. The competition is open to any athlete currently attending a NSW Secondary School and aged between 12 and 19. Keira’s Dad, John said, “This is the big time and the culmination of all the events this year.” News Of The Area will keep you posted.
