SOME amazing stories have emerged in the wake of the inaugural Hawks Nest Triathlon.

Take for instance local competitors Chris Lock, Breton Gibbs and Hugh Jones.

“I’m the oldest at 74,” Mr Lock said.

“Then there’s Breton who’s 70 and the baby Hugh at 68.”

They call themselves Team 201 and on the day of the triathlon they competed in the standard event.

“I did the 1.5 kilometre swim,” Chris told the News Of The Area.

“Hugh did the peddling in the 40 kilometre bike ride and Breton completed

the triathlon with the 10 kilometre run.’’

Not only did these retirees compete they also won a Bronze Medal.

Chris has been a swimmer all his life and can be found most mornings, rain hail or shine, winter or summer plying through the waters of Jimmy’s beach.

He belongs to a group of hardy swimmers who call themselves the Myall Mullets.

Chris Lock said, “The water is just so pristine, you see crabs and all kinds of sea life.”

Chris is also a member of the Myall Masters swim Club which holds its first meet for the season on Monday 10 October at 5pm at the Tea Gardens Pool.

“There are hefty fines for illegal dumping, but by the very nature of the offence, people who dump rubbish tend to do it covertly so it’s difficult to catch culprits in the act,” they said.

“Rubbish dumping impacts on the environment and it’s just another reason why people are encouraged to do the right thing and not dump materials in

The spokesperson said Forestry Corporation has worked hard over the past twelve months to carry out hazard reduction burning.

This has included over 35,000 hectares of forest across the State to minimise the risk of wildfire in the upcoming fire season.

Displays and demonstrations on all aspects of beekeeping were part of the event which took place locally at

the home of Sue and Chris Harvey.

Local beekeeper Gary Haynes exposed the inside workings of an active hive and explained the intricacies of the bee community life cycle.

A flow through hive was demonstrated by Gayle Allen who also showed how honey is gathered from the hive on demand using taps and a tube.

While many people assume beekeepers are regularly stung, Chris Harvey spoke about his recent experience of gathering a swarm of bees from a tree.

“Although he was covered in a mass of the surplus bees that failed to fall into the box, none of the bees stung him,” Mr Haynes said.

“Spring swarms are known to be nonaggressive and normally comprise of bees that are full of honey.”

SUNNYBOYS, the iconic frozen sticky treat enjoyed by generations around the country, is now officially a thing of the past.

A spokeswoman for The Daily Drinks Co confirmed the production of the icy treats stopped in August this year due to a “sustained reduction in consumer demand over a long period of time.”

Friends Georgina Cunich, Kenny Richardson and John Sahyoun were lucky enough to snag one of the few remaining boxes of Sunnyboys left on local supermarket shelves.

The group enjoyed an afternoon together in Bulahdelah last week reminiscing about the pyramids of frozen delight they grew up with.

“I liked that you could squeeze them open if you didn’t have a pair of scissors, you just had to wait for them to defrost a bit so they weren’t rock-hard,” Kenny said.

“You had to be careful otherwise they would come flying out and land on the ground.”

Kenny told News Of The Area the first Sunnyboys he brought cost 10 cents each and he remembers always carefully peeling back the silver foil lining to see if he had won a free one.

Three times the birthday fun THERE was triple cake and three times the fun when Karuah triplets Kenny, Jackson and Will Barry celebrated their first birthday last week.

Proud parents Katie Hogan and Phil Barry marked the special occasion at home with their three identical bundles of joy and three-year old daughter Grace.

Although there have been some hard times throughout the past 12 months, Katie said she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“The biggest challenge is just learning to find time for yourself and we haven’t had much sleep in the last year either,” she said.

“But we definitely wouldn’t change a thing, whenever we’re feeling down, the boys always make

us smile.”

For Katie and Phil, their demanding daily routine starts before 6.00am each morning when the boys wake up.

“It’s three lots of breakfasts, three baths and three bottles, it’s actually pretty exhausting,” Katie said.

“But Grace is a really good big sister and she is more than happy to share mum with her brothers.”

Katie, who can tell the triplets apart most of the time, said the boys have a lot more in common than just their appearance.

“They are happy, smile a lot and are adventurous as well,” Katie said.

“They have similar personalities and they tend to be a little cheeky and funny, a bit like us actually,” she added.

Katie told News Of The Area they have been blessed to have the help of their family and friends.

“The triplets are beautiful, healthy little boys and we

have been fortunate to have so much support,” she said.

“We thank our family for all the love they have given us, we’re really grateful for it.”

The triplet’s birthday celebrations will continue this weekend with a party and get-together with the extended family at Mungo Brush.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, of the 295,393 births registered in Australia in 2014, there were only 65 sets of triplets or a higher multiple, representing just 0.02 percent of all births.

Karuah BIG4 “Best Holiday Park” Finalists

“IT’S family owned, and it’s for families to have a holiday.”

That’s how owner and manager Michael Driver describes his BIG4 Karuah Jetty Holiday Park.

The Karuah BIG4 is a finalist in the upcoming CCIA Excellence Awards for Best Holiday Park on the New South Wales North Coast.

“The Awards are being held next week and we’re finalists in the permanent and holidays park areas,” Michael told the News Of The Area.

Michael’s father has owned the Karuah holiday park for the past 20 years.

“We’re constantly adding new cabins, and extending the park, we also have more

than ninety permanent sites, we’ve just added another seven.”

“We’ve upgraded our community hall, put a new pool in and new roads and we’re putting in a another entry to split the entrance between the holiday and permanent residents,” said Michael.

For holiday makers there’s a kids club, the choice of cabins or tent sites and camping sites with ensuites.

“We try to cater for everyone, you’ve got your own shower and bathroom facilities, for those who want more glamourous camping, they call it glamping,” he said.

The Excellence Awards are being held in Sydney next Tuesday.

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a bush fire on Myall River Road south of Bulahdelah on Tuesday 27 September.

Multiple Brigades attended and worked throughout the night to contain the fire.

Bulahdelah Rural Fire Services Deputy Captain Rod Parr said two properties and homes came under threat.

The fire was contained early on Wednesday morning

and crews continued their patrols of the area throughout the day.

As a result of the efforts by the fire crews from Bulahdelah, Pindimar/Tea Gardens, Booral and Stroud, there was no damage to the homes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and Mr Parr estimates about 50 hectares of land was damaged by the blaze.

Firefighters battle Myall blaze Mr Parr told News Of The Area this incident is a reminder of the importance of preparing for the fire season.

“Prepare your properties and always expect the unexpected, when the fire is on you, it is too late,” he said.

“People should go and look at the RFS website and download a bushfire survival plan.”

The Bushfire Danger Period commenced on 1 October and a permit is now required from the RFS by anyone wanting to conduct a burn.

RENEWAL, an exhibition by Bulahdelah-based artists Christine du Fresne and Louise Young, will be on display at Gloucester Regional Art Gallery throughout October.

The works on show will include a range of paintings and sculptures which reflect both artists’ commitment to exploring the concept of renewal in their art practice.

Sculptor Louise Young was originally a graphic designer and Art Conservator and is returning to her artwork after a break.

As a sculptor, she began working with discarded and unwanted objects and reshaping these often disparate elements into beautiful new forms.

Some of her works stand, some hang, and others are wall pieces.

All of Louise’s sculptures give new life to familiar objects.

Christine du Fresne, a painter and printmaker, looks at the moments of renewal in our lives and plays with these ideas through figurative relationships.

Her figures are often in awkward, self-conscious but familiar poses, creating a ‘theatre of life’ on the canvas where everything is in a state of transition.

Both artists have tertiary qualifications in their respective fields, and have had committed and robust art practices since qualifying, exhibiting in various mediums over the years.

RENEWAL is a dynamic but intimate exhibition, and invites viewers to reflect on their own processes of renewal.

The exhibition runs from Thursday 6 October to Sunday 30 October at Gloucester Regional Art Gallery.

Encouraged to apply for Sports funding

SPORTING clubs in Port Stephens are encouraged to apply for the Local Sport Grant Program to guarantee increased involvement in recreational activities.

Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, said sport and active recreation delivers many personal and community benefits including developing self-esteem, maintaining health and fitness, nurturing talented athletes and contributing to individual enjoyment of life.

“Investment in local sport and recreational facilities will encourage greater participation in sporting activities and support a stronger and healthier community,” Ms Washington said.

The NSW Government has allocated $50,000 for projects within the Port Stephens electorate and incorporated, not-for-profit sport clubs are eligible to apply.

There are four project types within the Program: Sport Development (up to

$2,000); Community Sport Events (up to $5,000); Sport Access (up to $5,000); and Facility Development (up to $20,000) The minimum amount available is $250 for all project types with the exception being for facility development which has a minimum request of $1,000.

Bradley Allen, said they are extremely grateful for the assistance of the Lions Club who have helped get the club up and running.

“This is the first time that we have had a competition team in 12 years, we’re going in C-grade, so the whole idea is getting the kids into it,” Mr Allen said.

“We’ve already had a few training sessions for our first game next weekend, which is a home game against Old Bar.” Mr Allen said the club desperately needed the new equipment which includes essential items such as bats,

balls, bails, pads and helmets.

Lions Club President Roger Dixon told News Of The Area the members were pleased to be able to assist the cricket club.

“It’s a worthy cause for a local organisation and it will be good for the town as well,” Mr Dixon said.

“The club needed the funds to help them get established and we are more than happy to assist.”

Mr Allen said club members were looking forward to playing the first competition game on their home pitch which was

recently repaired with a funds provided through a State Government grant.

“The pitch is great, we’ve got some turn in it, so the ball moves off the wicket better,” he said.

“It’s very spin friendly, so anyone who can spin a ball gets a reward for being a good spin bowler.”

Mr Allen has had a long history with cricket competitions in the Manning area and hopes a bat that he recently had signed by Australian cricket great Michael Clarke will inspire club members.

Paramedics join protest campaign

q AMBULANCE: Chalking protest in Tea Gardens.

By Margie TIERNEY PARAMEDICS from the Great Lakes and Port Stephens areas have joined a Statewide campaign protesting the Baird Government’s recent changes to their insurance coverage.

In August, the NSW Government dramatically reduced the death and disability payouts for ambulance officers leaving them with less than a quarter of their previous protection.

Letters to the Premier have gone unanswered, as have requests for talks with the Health Minister.

In response Paramedics across New South Wales have begun a series of protest campaigns.

“We’re professional, the campaign is based around not impacting the community,” Mike Callinan, spokesman for the Health Sector Union told the News Of The Area.

Ambulance vehicles including those based in Tea Gardens have been

chalked with the words “NSW Paramedics, most trusted, least protected, thanks to Mike Baird”.

Last Friday all paramedics were urged to wear their yellow vests to show their support for the campaign.

“So far Premier Baird has not been able to see us,” said Mike Callinan.

The community is being asked to lend their support by dropping in to their local Ambulance station and signing a petition.

So far stations have received over 10 thousand signatures.

And the paramedics are garnering support on social media.

“Paramedics are not asking for a pay rise, they’re are not asking for anything more than the other emergency services receive.”

Wonderful volunteers and supporters OPINION Dear News Of The Area, As President of the Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens Progress Association, I’m extremely proud of the members, and nonmembers, who volunteered their services at the inaugural Hawks Nest Triathlon on Saturday 24th September.

The triathlon was a huge success, due in no small part to the wonderful efforts of the volunteers scattered around the course, at the registration desk and at other official duty stations.

Special mention goes to the crew who worked tirelessly all day at the Progress Association’s sausage sizzle. Income raised from the sausage sizzle, as well as volunteer reimbursements, amounted to about $1000 which will go towards the many local civic improvements to which the Progress Association is committed.

Thanks also to Craig at Coles Tea Gardens for his support with catering for the triathlon volunteers and staff, and to Sharon Bultitude, Andrew Blatch

and the local gang at MidCoast Council for their planning and maintenance support.

On a more disappointing note, I'm aware that some disparaging remarks have been made on the local community Facebook page about my leadership of the Progress Association and its involvement in the recent work that was undertaken

by MidCoast Council on the path along Kingfisher Ave in Hawks Nest. Nobody is more disappointed and frustrated than me about the way Council has gone about

Dear News Of The Area I WAS camping at One Mile Beach for 1st week of holidays and decided to visit Tea Gardens on 28 September Wednesday.

I rang the Ferries on 27th to see what time ferries left from Nelson Bay and was advised 10 am.

On arrival at terminal I was advised this ferry is cancelled and the next one

is 11am.

On arrival at Tea Gardens at 12.15 not only was the ferry full to the brim, but they had also had to hire the dolphin boat to bring the extra load over.

Timetables- do they apply? Obviously not. Why have them?

Rally race hopes to be back FROM Page 16

Speaking with News Of The Area, AMSAG spokesperson Michael Bannon said the rally held in Bulahdelah was a challenging event.

“It’s what we call a drivers’ rally, as it’s very rewarding for the drivers,” he said.

“It takes a lot to stay on the course, and at a fast time.”

Mr Bannon said although this is the first time the

AMSAG has held the event in Bulahdelah, the town was a traditional rally point for Southern Cross in the 60s through to the early 80s.

“These rallies were very popular with competitors so we wanted to bring the event back to Bulahdelah.”

“For us, it is all about bringing good roads to the competitors.”

The fifth round of the series will be held at Johns River on 12 November.

Wild sense of Adventure

By Daniel SAHYOUN TEAMS competing in the 36-hour Wildside Adventure Race began their epic 250-kilometre journey through the rugged bushland and rivers surrounding Bulahdelah at midnight on 1 October.

The course was designed to test competitors physical and mental endurance as they navigated their way over an unmarked route by foot, mountain bike and kayak.

Added challenges along the way required the teams to problem solve on the run.

Other categories included the 12 and 24-hour races with teams covering distances between 70 and 150 kilometres.

Hugh Stodart from Sydney and his winning team crossed the finish line exhausted on Sunday morning in a time of 32:45:00.

Speaking with News Of The Area, Hugh said it was a good but demanding course.

"The Violet Hill orienteering was very challenging as it was hard navigation across the difficult terrain. It really tested you, especially when you got stuck in the scrub,” he said.

“You had to stay on your game the whole time and trying to stay awake was

definitely the big challenge.”

In a true survivor manner, details of the course were only made available shortly before the start of each race adding to the challenge.

The event was organised

by Fully Rad Adventures and attracted some of the best endurance racers in the country.

Race Director Richard Old said the course provided a tough challenge.

“They’ve raced without sleep and it’s pretty mentally demanding,” he said.

“We also included a special urban orienteering leg around Bulahdelah for teams to explore the history of the town.”

As part of this leg, the teams were required to visit 25 sites including Ted Baker Lookout, Court House, Cemetery and Show Ground with most teams completing the task within an hour.

Mr Old said the race is held in a different place every year so teams don’t get used to the course.

The race concluded in Wade Park with catering provided by Bulahdelah Lions Club.

More than 200 people were involved in the event which included the Adventure Racers, support crews and organisers.

Bowlers crowned Queen of the Mountain

GLORIOUS spring weather created near perfect conditions for the 78 bowlers competing for the title of the 2016 Queen of the Mountain last week.

Held at Bulahdelah Bowling Club with the picturesque Alum Mountain backdrop, friendly rivalry was present amongst competitors representing nine bowling clubs from throughout the District.

A sea of colourful uniforms and bowls littered the greens with constant encouragement, chatter and laughter amongst the friends throughout the day.

Score keeper Rod Lansdowne tallied the figures and other volunteers were on hand to ensure the smooth running of the tournament.

In a close finish, the crowns and title of Queen of the Mountain were awarded

to Roslyn Brown, Susan Leonard and Terrie Bowman from Tuncurry/Forster Sporties.

Second place was taken by the Wingham team of Leonie Gilford, Claudia O’Donnell and Denise Matheson with the Bulahdelah ladies, MaryAnne Hutley, Jan Bartyn and Joan Fenning claiming third.

The competition was organised by Bulahdelah Women’s Bowling Club (BWBC) and has been held every year since 2011.

“These tournaments are a great way to get all players from the area together to compete against each other, and it is always good be able to interact with the other clubs,” said BWBC Secretary Laraine Parnell.

“Everyone definitely enjoyed the day and we’re especially thankful for the good weather.”

Congratulations were extended to all teams for their participation in the annual event which is definitely looked forward to by the players each year.

“We’ve had a fabulous day and we have been coming up for these tournaments for many years, and we’re privileged to come,” said Tea Gardens competitor Loretta Barker.

“It’s very hard to actually get into the final cut to play in these, so it is an honour to be able to partake.”

The teams represented Karuah, Tea Gardens and Bulahdelah from the local area and Pacific Palms, Harrington, Tuncurry/ Forster Sporties, Forster, Wingham and Taree Clubs from further afield.

By The JAFFA 28 September: Fifty bowlers took advantage of the wonderful spring weather today to take part in the usual Wednesday Triples event.

It was single entry and a draw for partners, instead of the usual Nominated Triples, which made the competition much closer with all teams having an equal chance of winning.

I had the misfortune to play against the winners of the day; Bill Moon, Peter King and Mark Hair.

in great form. They finished with +40.

Well done!

In second place on +32 were; Tom Short, Paul Carter and Ron Green, whilst the “lucky Losers’ were; Graeme Watkins, Ian Baker and Peter Gurney.

30 September The usual Friday Open Jackpot Pairs was not played today. It gave way to the annual “kneelers” versus “Grippers” challenge in aid of a Masonic charity.

RALLY AROUND THE fourth round of the Southern Cross Rally Series was held in Bulahdelah on 1 October.

Thirty-seven teams consisting of a driver and navigator left the showground at staggered intervals and raced along dirt tracks through the Bulahdelah and Wang Wauk State Forests.

The race was conducted in seven stages covering 138 kilometres and featured a night time run along Manning Hill Rd. Drivers reached top speeds of up to 200 km/h and averaged around 110 km/h over the entire course.

Each team was supported by their service crew who took care of tyres and mechanical issues during the day.

The rally was organised by the Australian Motorsport Action Group (AMSAG) who hold several events across the state each year.

THE Myall Lakes Aquatic Club held their AGM at Nerong Hall on 24 September.

This followed a very successful year of social outings as well as some much needed wharf repair in the Myall Lakes.

All committee members elected to hold the same positions as last year led

by Rod Blanch as Commodore, Linda McIntosh as Secretary and Paul Bendy as Treasurer.

The meeting was followed with a delicious catered meal provided by Elaine from Nerong.

On Sunday morning we enjoyed the traditional barbecue breakfast.

The next outing will be the Sailpast at Tea Gardens on 29th October.

The Club plans to erect the marquee on the waterfront in which to hold a barbecue and social get together.

We welcome members and guests.
