Show Celebrates 25th Year By Margie TIERNEY NOW that the dust has settled, organisers of the 25th Anniversary of the Myall Art and Craft Show have had time to reflect on what was a great three day celebration. Coordinator Chris Baker told News Of the Area, “Around 500 people
came through the doors which was a great turnout considering the extremely hot weather over the weekend.” “We had a great response from our People’s Choice Awards in Photography with 330 entries and just under 400 entries for the Art Award,” Chris said. “The Photography
winner was ‘Misty Morning’ by Paul Mulvaney and the Art Painting winner was ‘Tea Gardens Waterfront” ( site of the original pool) by Joan Richards.” Founding member Joan Wilcox drew the raffle for a beautiful painting, again the artist, Joan Richards, the

WE’RE not getting any younger, as the last Census confirmed, with the towns of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest having the oldest demographic in the country. With this in mind, the Reverend Peter Adkins from St Andrew’s Anglican Church is leading a seminar called ‘Ageing with Grace’. “Living in an area with the demographic we’ve got, we wanted to help people on the journey of ageing well, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually,” Reverend Adkins said. “This is a first for us. A friend of mine did it in his Church and I’m following his lead, because it was a great success.” Among the presenters at the Seminar will be Dr Steve Sylvester, Registered Nurse Karen Partridge, Psychologist Ron Farrell Anne Hepplewhite from Lance Boots Funerals and of course Reverend Adkins. “We want people to live life to the full, everyone is welcome, young old, any denomination, it’s open to the entire community.” Reverend Adkins added, “We will be asking for feedback and if it goes well, we’ll be happy to do a similar seminar every year.” The ‘Ageing with Grace’ Seminar is being held at the Tea Gardens Anglican Church on the corner of Witt and Ogden Streets on Saturday 16 February from 9am until 1pm. It is difficult to predict whether an adult child’s claim against a parent’s estate will succeed in circumstances where the relationship has broken down before the parent dies. Two recent cases illustrate this point. In Rogers v Rogers [2018] NSWSC 1982 a daughter had no contact with her mother for approximately 27 years. The daughter failed in her claim against her mother’s estate. She had been left nothing in her mother’s Will. The major asset of the estate was the mother’s house. The claimant’s brother was living in the house and was in need of accommodation. The Judge said it was not important to apportion blame for the breakdown of the relationship. The critical question was - what would the community expect? The Judge emphasised he
had to make an “evaluative assessment” of all of the relevant factors including the needs of others. This decision can be compared with the case of Re Estate McNamara [2018] NSWSC 1661. In that case, a son made a claim. He had a strained relationship with his mother. He alleged he had been sexually assaulted by her. The Judge was not able to tell if this was a truthful allegation. The deceased mother had left nothing to the son and the majority of her estate to her other son who was asset rich but income poor. The Judge awarded $75,000 (estate of over $1m) to the claimant. Both Judges indicated that the Testator’s assessment of the relationship with their child was a relevant factor.

Rescue Boats for Waterways earmarked to be Upgraded q
BOTH Port Stephens and Lemon Tree Passage Marine Rescue flotillas are included in the list of 28 units to receive new boats. This is part of an initiative by the Berejiklian State Government. Over the next four years some 38 new vessels will be added to rescue fleet manned by volunteers along the NSW coast at a cost of $37.6 million. This means an effective doubling of the Marine Rescue budget. Lemon Tree Passage unit commander Rick Tyler said that the new vessel would improve the effectiveness of the service. “Ours is one of the oldest serving boats in the fleet and we look forward to the upgrade,” he said. “The rapid change in technology means that older craft are left behind and electronic communication systems, radar, night vision equipment and rescue gear need to be brought up to pace,” Mr Tyler said. The roll-out of the new vessels will probably see the new Lemon Tree craft come on stream in about two years according to Rick.

Responsible pet ownership BEING a responsible pet owner and ensuring animals are microchipped and registered ensures MidCoast Council can return animals to their homes. Council’s Acting Director of Planning and Natural Systems, Paul De Szell said, “The number one priority for our Rangers is to return animals to their owners, however this can only happen if the animals are microchipped and ownership details kept up to date.” “All Pounds in the MidCoast Council area are managed in accordance with the Companion Animals Act 1998 and the NSW Animal Welfare Code of Practice 5 – dogs and cats in animal boarding establishments. Council has acknowledged the current concern with the way local Pounds are run, saying it is important the community understands how the Pounds operate.” “Dogs that make their way into our Pound generally fall into the following categories: not identifiable, removed from their owners due to the threat they present or surrendered/dumped as they are unwanted by their owners.” Mr De Szell said. While he understood the concerns from well-meaning members of the community, there was often a misperception that all animals which end up in the Pound can be rehoused. Many dogs that do end up at the Pound have not been well cared for, and in many cases have been mistreated. As a result some dogs are not suitable to be rehoused, due to their temperament and behaviours. Mr De Szell said the animals are well cared for by Council staff, and it is upsetting for staff to be vilified on social media for doing their job. Council staff do work with several organisations to rehouse suitable animals including the Animal Welfare League of NSW Great Lakes/ Manning branch, Paws Crossed Animal Rescue and Sweet Pea Animal Rescue.

THE NSW Seniors Festival begins next week, with Tea Gardens Library getting into the swing of the event with a number of activities for the young at heart. “We’re holding two events for Seniors on Friday 22 February,” Carol Johnson told News Of The Area. “In the morning we’ve got Tai Chi for an hour from 10.30am and in the afternoon we’ve got some hands on lessons for using computer tablets.” You’ll need to bring along your tablets and smartphones to learn how to become tech savvy. The session runs for 2 hours from 2pm. Both events are free, but bookings are essential by going to midcoastlibraries.com.au and clicking on events. Now that the school holidays are over, homework help for the younger generation, is back on again at the Library. A group of volunteers, many of them ex teachers lend a hand to students every Wednesday afternoon from 3.30pm during the school term.

Just a reminder the Tea Gardens Library near the Singing Bridge will be closed on Monday 11 February for a training day but will reopen as usual on Wednesday 13 February from 9am.

Bernie - Solo Guitar & Vocal By Kelly MAY FOR Elton John Saturday night’s alright. The same can be said for the members and guests of the Tilligerry RSL Club, rocking out to the party tunes of solo guitar and vocalist, Bernie.
Bernie began playing guitar at the early age of nine years old. Following six years of lessons in Sydney he moved to the Central West and continued his journey under the capable mentorship of Leo Dekroo for the following seven years. Leo and his brother Doug, better known

as The Dekroo Brothers, are famous for a hit single in the 1960’s titled ‘And Her Name Is Scarlet’. After gaining experience with various artists and Bands Bernie decided to go it alone taking vocal lessons and moving to Newcastle. Professionalism is a key ingredient to Bernie’s solo shows with crowd engagement
and providing an exceptional sound highest on his priority list. Bernie will rock out the Tilligerry RSL from 7:30pm on Saturday 9 February, with unmistakable covers from artists such as Hunters and Collectors, Dire Straits, Greenday, The Eagles, and Chris Issac.
MIDCOAST Council is indicating that its clean-up bill from the severe storm event of 20 December could top $350,000 as it continues to schedule clean-up operations across the MidCoast. Natural disaster funding from the State Government was allocated in the early days after the event to clear roads and make road verges safe. Debris in parks and on community land, which has to be removed at a cost to Council,
is prioritised according to safety first, and thereafter scheduled to be undertaken where and when resources can be allocated. Council does not collect piles of green waste placed by residents on median strips throughout the area. Residents must dispose of this waste appropriately themselves. To help you better prepare your household for emergency events, visit Council’s emergency web page and follow links to SES and RFS resources.

Last year the meet attracted 18 Clubs and more than 130 swimmers. In all there are 16 races, from 25 metres to 200 metres and relays, with heats and finals filling up the program. Chris Lock said, “We’re only too happy for the community to come along and support us.” On Monday 11 February, the Masters will be back at the pool to launch the newly installed defibrillator at the Tea Gardens Swimming Pool. The official ceremony will start at 4pm. The defibrillator was funded in part from a Grant through the NSW Government Local Sport program.

FROM Page 20 second in both. “Heat was the major problem with 44 degrees and after the long jump the competition was called off for an hour to see if the temperature dropped which it didn’t,” John said. Day Three and another second for Keira in the triple jump. “The jumps are becoming specialised events and you need not just speed but new techniques as well,” John said. “Then there were 4x100m relay events and Keira was invited to join three other girls to run in the Open Women’s event.” “Running against much older athletes, they excelled and Keira ran the final leg and came 2nd. again an amazing 100m run by her,” proud Dad said. “So with the incredible heat with the track having a temp well over the ambient temp, it was an experience which it is hoped will not happen again in upcoming events.” There’s no rest for the Medowie High Schooler, she’s off to the Little Athletes Regionals this weekend and later in the month the NSW Junior Championships at Olympic Park in Sydney.
q COUNTRY ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Keira McGregor with Olympian Michelle Jenneke.
