Bucketts Way second upgrade project completed

MIDCOAST Council has completed work to reconstruct a 500 metre length of the Bucketts Way at the Stroud Hill Road intersection. Council received funding through the Australian Government's Black Spot Programme which is an initiative to reduce crashes on Australian roads. "The section of the road where work was undertaken was in poor condition and did not have any safety barriers in place," said Council’s Director of Engineering Services Ron Hartley. "The work has seen drainage improved and the road pavement widened and reconstructed. A safety barrier has been installed along the western

embankment of the work to improve safety and lessen the severity of a crash over the embankment." "An asphalt surfacing was laid over the Bucketts Way intersection with Stroud Hill Road this week," said Council’s Operations Manager, Robert Fish. "All that remains to complete the job is line marking, which is expected to occur in July. The project progressed well and is a credit to all Council staff involved." Council's Stroud Depot Operations staff undertook the construction project. This is the second project completed on the Buckets Way over 2015-2016, with a section of road reconstructed q THE ROAD: The Bucketts Way / Stroud Hill Road intersection is completed except in the Allworth area earlier for line marking. this year.

Be prepared for a long wait. Take a book or magazine. Sit at the back of the courtroom and get a feel for the protocols and processes. Before entering the courtroom turn off electronic equipment, including mobile phones, and remove hats or sunglasses (if there are no medical or religious reasons preventing you from doing so). Leave any food or drink outside or carefully sealed in your bag. Why am I here again? The directions and/or case management hearing is a short hearing where the Judge will decide the next procedural steps to deal with your case and make orders for those steps to happen. This is usually to arrange a mediation, set due dates for the parties to lodge their evidence, set any further directions hearings and/or set a date of the final hearing.

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

Interim hearings deal with specific issues that need to be determined before the final hearing. There will be a short hearing, usually done on the affidavits without parties giving oral evidence. The hearings should take less than 2 hours and will be about issues such as urgent injunctions to preserve property, compel parties to comply with rules about disclosure, interim parenting and property settlement. The final hearing involves opening and closing addresses to the court about your case, defining which documents are to be considered by the judge, the giving of oral evidence and cross examination. The judge will then likely adjourn the case to consider the evidence and hand down their judgment at a later date.

At the close of counting on Election night, 86% of the total vote had been tallied. Dr Gillespie secured a strong lead with a margin of 62 percent in front of his closest rival Labor’s Peter Alley with 38 per cent of the twoparty preferred vote.

Independent Brad Christensen and Greens Julie Lyford each scored just over nine percent of the primary vote. They were followed by Christen Democrat Elaine Carter with three percent and Independent Rodger Riach with two percent. In the Myall Coast area, David Gillespie received the highest number of primary votes from voters at Bulahdelah, Hawks Nest,

North Arm Cove and Tea Gardens polling places. In contrast, Labor’s Peter Alley scored 53% of the two-party preferred vote in Karuah. Shortly after 9.00pm on Election night, Dr Gillespie posted a message on Facebook saying, “Looking good in Lyne. Thanks to all my supporters and booth workers today and everyone who has placed your trust in me again.”

Dr Gillespie started Election Day early in Wauchope visiting many of the polling places in the electorate as he travelled south, stopping at Taree High School to cast his own vote. Speaking to Media on Election Day, Dr Gillespie said he had been getting a good response around the polling places. “I’ve received an awful lot of support from people at the booths

By Daniel SAHYOUN HUNTER Local Land Services recently hosted an open community session in Bulahdelah to discuss the predicted changes that agriculture will face as a result of climate variability. A draft climate action plan was presented to the community during the evening, with board members and staff on hand to speak with landholders about managing the changes. Regional Coordinator Karen Fitzherbert said recent flood and storm events in the Hunter remind us of the impact that a changing climate can have. “Knowing how our region may be influenced by climate variability is important to allow our farmers and communities to prepare for extreme weather events in the future,” Mrs Fitzherbert said. The open community session followed a meeting of the Manning Great Lakes Community Advisory Group. The group, which consists of representatives from agricultural, industry, local government and community, provides high level advice and feedback to Hunter Local Land

Services on local priorities and services. Mrs Fitzherbert said local issues discussed by the group related to water catchment quality, wild dog control, natural resource management, animal diseases and biosecurity. “The NSW Government is proposing changes to biodiversity legislation relating to pest animals, pest plants, weeds and animal diseases,” she said. “This will mean new frameworks and obligations for land owners.” A consultation package of the reforms to land management and biodiversity conservation in NSW can be viewed at www. landmanagement.nsw.gov.au Hunter Local Land Services works with landholders throughout the Hunter and Manning Great Lakes across several local government areas including the MidCoast and Port Stephens Council areas. Hunter Local Land Services will hold further meetings throughout the year to give community members the opportunity to meet with staff and discuss a diverse range of services and issues.

Schools Celebrate NAIDOC Week By Daniel SAHYOUN

NAIDOC events are being held around the country this week to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The 2016 NAIDOC theme, Songlines - The living narrative of our nation, showcases Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s histories and deep spiritual connection to the

land. NAIDOC Week is highly respected in Schools in the Myall Coast region and gives Indigenous students a chance to share their culture through story telling, dance and song. As part of the NAIDOC celebrations, Bulahdelah Central School’s Cultural Group performed at Tea Gardens Public School and Hawks Nest Pre-School last week. Group member, 14-year-

old Jaylee Tassell from North Arm Cove said she especially enjoys presenting the indigenous dances. “I do this because I am proud of my culture, and I want to display it to everyone,” she said. “I am able to learn about the significance of each dance in my own culture and the performances allow me to teach others about it as well.” The students performed songs in traditional language,

“The activities presented by the students allow them to display their culture and be proud of it, and it also promotes a sense of unity.” Students and visitors at Tea Gardens Public School enjoyed an Indigenousinspired morning tea as part of the Celebrations with kangaroo burgers and other treats on offer. Tea Gardens Principal Mark Clemson said the success of the day was due to the efforts

of staff and many volunteers. “I would like to acknowledge the hard work that has been put into organising and running this day,” Mr Clemson said. “The performers and all those who have assisted deserve the upmost praise for their hard work.” This year’s NAIDOC Week is celebrated nationally from 3-10 July.

Teachers given a fond farewell By Daniel SAHYOUN

FAREWELL: Teachers Mr Rob Brown and Mrs Kerry Carter.

Rotary Club of Myall Coast change over the evening This past year, the Club has donated in excess of $16,000 to local organisations and to Rotary Youth and Welfare programs. Two special guests on the evening were Cordell Murphy and Carl Price. Both were recent participants in Rotary Youth programs with Cordell spending 12 months as a Rotary Exchange Student in Poland. Cordell said that he was proud to represent Rotary and that both he and Carl benefited tremendously from the experiences. Mr Dewar handed over the chain of office and the mantle of President to Rotarian Brian Oakley. He wished Brian and his team of Directors continued success during the following year and

expressed his thanks to everyone involved. Rotary International was founded in America by businessman Paul Harris in 1905. In special recognition of individuals who give of their time and energies to “Service Above Self ”, the Rotary Foundation established a Paul Harris Fellowship. Rotary Clubs have the opportunity to nominate someone from their Community. This year Jennifer Wenham was recognised with membership as a Paul Harris Fellow for her years of unstinting dedication to the Community and in particular, to The Red Cross. A recognition well earned.

There are students that you want to continue to watch grow and develop and it is very hard to detach yourself from a place that you have been in for so long.” Mrs Carter said she will be kept busy spending time with family in Newcastle and Sydney and has plans for atrip to Europe later in the year. School Counsellor at Tea Gardens Public and Bulahdelah Central Schools Mr Rob Browne, will be starting a new position at Callaghan College in the Newcastle area when school resumes next term. Mr Browne said he has enjoyed working with both

the students and staff at the schools over the past six years. “One particular highlight of my job has been working one on one with students to help them increase their resilience and improve their engagement with school,” Mr Browne said. “It has been an honour to work collaboratively with the teachers who have a great relationship with the students and I’m proud to see children that I’ve worked with reach such high potential.” Mr Browne, who lives in Tea Gardens with his family, said although he is changing schools he has no plans to leave the area just yet. “Our family love living in Tea Gardens so much that we can’t decide to move, it’s such a wonderful place,” he said.

Seventy members and guests gathered at Mumms on the Myall for the gala occasion held to induct the incoming Board for the next 12 months. When asked to comment, Chairman of the event, Past President (PP) Geoff Latona, said, “It was great to see so many of Rotary’s supporters there to help celebrate the beginning of another Rotary year.” Past President Paul Dewar outlined his 2015/16 year and thanked Members for their dedicated hard work and support but also for the generous support that the Community has given the Club.

Coolongolook Grants a Success MIDCOAST Council has provided $32,000 in grants for community projects under the Community Grants program of the former Great Lakes Council. The grants were distributed to 25 community groups for a range of projects. Community Development Coordinator Lyndie Hepple said, "Council received 41 high-quality applications making assessment a difficult task for the Grants Committee." "The successful projects will benefit the community in a number of ways,” she said. Ms Hepple said that the projects range from artistic projects to minor infrastructure and support for vulnerable people in the community in form of food

banks and assistance with mental health projects. Under the Community Grants program, non-profit groups and organisations were encouraged to apply for up to $2,000 per project, with preference given to projects which build the capacity of the community rather than meeting ongoing operational costs and which improved the quality of life for the community. The Grants Committee met to consider the applications shortly before the merger of Taree, Gloucester and Great Lakes Councils, and the recommendations were approved by Administrator John Turner at the first meeting of the new MidCoast Council on 25 May.

q TABLES: Cedar Park on the Coolongolook River will receive new picnic tables thanks to the funding and the hard work of the Coolongolook/Wootton Action Group.

Thursday Walkers stepping back into History with Elvis Presley

Walking history tour By Helen WATKINS

DAY TRIP: Thursday Walkers group stop to inpect the large Elvis Presley mural at Kurri Kurri.

Lioness produces a new board for 2016-17

Where are we? Kurri Kurri NSW. Yes that's right, the town that we drive through on our way to the Hunter vineyards is home to a treasure trove of over 50 murals beautifully painted on the outside of buildings throughout the town. On Thursday 23 June around thirty from the Thursday Walkers group headed down the highway to undertake a walking tour of the Kurri Kurri murals. We were met by Debbie who was a gold mine of information as she guided us

around the town to look at the murals. The murals portray people, events and places that shaped the history of the town and surrounding areas. It's a walking history tour. Every mural contains a kookaburra. Some are easy to find but others are a challenge. The eagle eyed among the walkers of course rose to the challenge. The Kurri Kurri Visitor Information Centre in the main street has information pamphlets and a map of the Mural walk.

Continuing their success

THE Changeover dinner for the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Lioness Club was held at Tea Gardens Hotel on the 20 June.

PDG Kate Milford OAM inducted President Linda Allen, Secretary Ann Hill, Treasurer Ann Remment and the new Board for 2016-2017. Past President Vivienne Boyd said, “I thank the members for

a very successful year, also the Community and Businesses in our area as without them it is impossible to fundraise and be involved.” President Linda Allen said, “I would like the

Club to keep going with its usual programme that we have been doing the past few years and is open to any new ideas for the future.” Everyone present enjoyed the night.

Hawks Continue a Purple Patch LEAGUE Tea Gardens Hawks By Neil REYNOLDS THE Tea Gardens Hawks defeated the Cardiff Cobras by 24 points to 22, in a thriller at Myall Park on Saturday. In perfect conditions, the Hawks recovered from early tries to Cardiff. The Hawks opening try was scored by inspiring front rower, John Schultz.

Five eighth Steve Slee was next to score from broken play. The Hawks led by 12 pints to 10 at the half time break, but needed to consolidate. A converted try to Jake Geraghty 15 minutes into the second half created an 8 point buffer. A try constructed by Brooke Roach, and finished by Jack Beverley, was the best of the day. Cardiff’s persistent attack got them two more ties in the last ten minutes, but was not enough to win the game.

Billy Greentree’s boot was the difference. Greentree converted four goals from 4 attempts. Player of the round was lock Trent Murphy in the Phillips Oysters no.13 jersey. Murphy celebrated his 250th game for the Hawks by winning the “players player”, supporters, and referees best and fairest awards. John Schultz was voted best in attack, and Nathan Ruse best in defence. The win saw the Hawks leapfrog Cardiff into third place on the ladder behind

BOWLS Lorraine Harvey. Thursday, 30 June: The annual competition for the Ruth Bowden Trophy took place today between Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club and Karuah Women’s Bowling Club, at Tea Gardens. Ruth Bowden lived in Tea Gardens and was a popular member of Tea Gardens Bowling Club, which was then an RSL Club which was situated in Myall Street before moving to its present location. In later years Ruth and her husband relocated to Karuah, where Ruth Joined the Karuah Bowling club. After Ruth died, her husband donated a trophy, naming it in memory of his dear wife. The Ruth Bowden Trophy Day competition was born,

and has been a source of friendship and good cheer between Karuah and Tea Gardens since 1988. The games today consisted of four games of triples and a great deal of hilarity could be heard for most of the morning. It was good to catch up with members of the Karuah Club who have become friends over the years. Tea Gardens won the Trophy again this year, so it stays in our trophy cabinet once again till next year. President Robyn from Karuah asked when was the last time that Karuah wonthe trophy, and when she found out, her reply was “I didn’t really need to know that did I?” All fun!! Tea Gardens President Sandra thanked the Karuah ‘girls ‘ for making the trip here today. Both presidents will be out of office when our clubs compete next year at

points to eight at Myall Park on Saturday. Zane Ridley scored three tries on a standout performance. Lilly-Anne White also scored, along with Shaq Saunders. Tye Carter, Zane Ridley, and Shaq Saunders, kicked goals. The “Tea Gardens Fencing” 8’s performed well at Raymond Terrace against a very strong outfit. All Myall river sides will have a week off next week during the School Holiday break. Karuah, so they were given a fond farewell, but we are sure to see them both play next year. Social Bowls: There were fourteen bowlers present today. Due to the Trophy Day, the social games were played on our grass green. The format was one game of triples and two games of pairs. The winners with the lowest score were Kerry Faber and Jo Younghusband. Our lunch toady was catered and served and served by Stephen and wife Justine who presented us with the most delicious lasagne and salads followed by scrumptious pavlova with mixed berries and cream. Stephen and Justine will be opening a new restaurant at the Country Club in the very near future. Can’t wait!

“Bossy” “Sparty” “Persil” “Sparky” or just plain old “Fur Ball”. Some of the loving names bestowed on him by passing friends. Unfortunately he left us on 27-06-2016 for a better place. He always thought that he was the boss or mascot for Myall Quays Shopping Centre and had many friends in the staff that worked in various shops. Never a bad word for the humans but not sure about other canine’s. He will be sadly missed by all. Our sincere thanks to Karleah at Tea Gardens Veterinary Hospital. And the staff at Noah’s Ark at Medowie. Thank you to a lot of friends and sometimes nameless people that have loved Spartacus over his all too short lifespan and your support for us at this time SADLY MISSED BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN. RIP our little friend. Geoff and Doreen.

Three Masters compete in Manly

LAST Sunday a group of three swimmers travelled to Abbotsleigh School to compete in the Manly Masters meet. By Sharon TAYLOR

q

SWIM MEET: Three Myall Masters, Peter Kellaway, Chris Mobbs and Chris Lock.

14 MYALL COAST NEWS OF THE AREA

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

Chris Lock blew them away in the 50M and 100M Backstroke and was just beaten into second place of the 200 freestyle by a miniscule 0.1 of a second. With two firsts and a second he finished equal second in his age division. Peter Kellaway has returned to form and staying there. He won his 100 freestyle, came second in the 200M and third in the 50M.

These results gave him third place in his age group against some hot competition. Chris Mobbs had a 1st in the 50 M, second in the 200 M and 4th in the 100M freestyle events. Chris was fourth out of fourteen in my age Division As a club Myall Masters came a cool seventeenth place out of twenty-seven. A tidy contribution by just three swimmers.
